Any program made by Mozilla natively supports portable mode. To do this, create a cmd file with the string: basilisk.exe -Profile "User" or add the -Profile "User" parameter to the shortcut. The folder User will be created in the program folder. Instead of "User", you can write any word.2 points

Too funny. But, um, just how much "relevant info" are you expecting to find? I personally don't see much of any herein - *ever*. No offense, but let's not kid ourselves. People requesting issues be fixed that also exist with "upstream" -- irrelevant. People requesting an Opera build -- irrelevant. People requesting people not use CAPITAL letters or using too many quotes -- irrelevant. People having problem with HTML5 but not following guidelines already set forth -- irrelevant. People having problem with a site they never visit but it was flagged so now they think the site should work for them -- irrelevant. People following the Lemming over the cliff over the newest security hype -- irrelevant. But I digress...2 points

Sigh .... no I'm not trying to get kudos of any kind, and my running Windows 8 was just for full disclosure that I personally had no fight in the game. So don't like my posts then. :(2 points

I haven't read the topic (registration required, and it's not a big enough deal to bother registering) so I'm just guessing that they're following Google's timeline for Chrome, rather than M$'s timeline for Win 7 itself: As to Win 8, it's interesting that it's newer than Win 7, but also hit EoS earlier (since everyone was "supposed" to upgrade to 8.1). So if/when they do stop supporting Win 7, they might just set the minimum required version to 8.1 and we'd all be out of luck. But it may also have to do with programming. Another guess of mine is, it's not really any harder to support Win 7/8 than it is to support 8.1. If so, MCP may not see much advantage in cutting off Win 7/8 support in terms of removing code from the product. The chance to remove code and make the browser package smaller seems to have been one of their motivations to drop XP support (less sure about Vista) back in the day. You were perfectly clear; that's why I said you probably wouldn't like my solution! FF 52 doesn't support SSUAOs (at least, not without considerable tweaking), so an extension like "Good Twitter" is needed to send Twitter a different UA (so their Web server will use the old interface). However, this also causes Twitter to send the audio that @roytam1's built-in support wouldn't have handled correctly, but since you're (of necessity) using Primetime with FF 52, it plays fine anyway. As for getting it to work in NM, his built-in support is probably getting the sampling rate wrong somehow. Unfortunately I don't think anyone yet knows quite how to fix it.2 points

They probably figure since they're doing the work to maintain it the inconsistency is just fine. Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla can be just as inconsistent at times and they will always find ways to justify it. On Windows 7 I'm using this version since it restores many of the features they've removed so either way I'm glad the support is still there and hope it doesn't go away anytime soon.2 points

Hello nice people! Should the XP user community have a thread about the latest version of applications (and runtimes and so on) that run on well updated but unmodified XP sp3? As inspired by http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/133014-last-versions-of-software-for-windows-2000/ because more and more software editors drop the XP compatibility, so just now would be the right time to write it down. This might need someone who maintains the thread for readability, maybe to keep a front page with the raw information. What do you think?1 point

By far the worst prob for old Win98 browsers in today's web is outdated https-encryption (SSL/TLS). Websites insisting to connect with modern TLS1.2 are completely BLOCKED, showing only error pages, usually this infamous one: Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap That desaster started only 1-2 years ago with Google's command to encrypt the whole public web with modern standards too, and things went downhill fast. Meanwhile half the internet is broken for old Firefox/Mozilla browsers! Amazingly, old Opera12.02 (needs KernelEx) is still holding up much better, it was amazingly advanced for its time, but now losing the uphill battle too. Lucky the people who can run the last Presto version (Opera 12.15?) Luckily, especially for Mozilla fans, rescue came from projects like Retrozilla, with TLS1.2, for pure vanilla Windows98. https://msfn.org/board/topic/174987-x/ And since a few years also from roytam1. Focussing mainly on Mozilla browsers for XP, but occasionally also a special build for older systems. Such a pity that he doesn't create own topics here for his fascinating Win98-browser updates. But hidden away in the middle of giant melting pot topics in the XP-forum that stuff just gets lost. Only just-for-fun hobby users of retro stuff (like himself) may stumble across it over there. So what do, to give notice of those gems to more regular users of old systems too? Which are HERE? Perhaps we can at least collect some links here, for real 9X users, to find that stuff easier. And there's probably more interesting stuff floating around out there somewhere, from other people, that could be added too. For longer discussions of single projects it would be better if anyone can create new separate topics around here, to keep that stuff together, then in THIS topic just post the link and a bit description.1 point

... Adding to what my friend @Vistapocalypse posted, MCP dropped Vista support in Pale Moon with the release of v28.0.0 on Aug 16th 2018, a mere 16 months after Vista's own EoS (end of Extended Support by vendor, which was Apr 11th 2017); so yes, XP diehards shouldn't be moaning over this... Would I have wanted official Vista support to have continued past Tycho (v27.x.x) (and that would've been at a minimal cost, considering how much similar Vista & 7 are, both NT6) ? Of course yes ... But when MCP started developing UXP (forked off FxESR 52, both XP/Vista compatible), Vista had already reached its EoS, so, in his own words, he didn't want to implement support for a "dead" OS in his "new" application platform... https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?p=134148#p134148 Addition: In a now hidden () GitHub comment of mine, my own view on the matter: Just for the sake of clarity, Moonchild's response(s):1 point

Me thinks a Windows 8 user accusing Moonchild of hypocrisy in the XP forum seems like an easy way to gain kudos, and indeed TechnoRelic seems to have liked your posts, but I don't. Microsoft's EoL date for Windows XP was April 8, 2014. According to Pale Moon - Release Notes for Archived Versions, that was soon after version 24.4.2 was released. Did Moonchild "steadfastly" rid Pale Moon of Windows XP support by the end of the month? Absolutely not! Pale Moon 25 and 26 continued to support XP, and version 27.0.0 wasn't released until 2016-11-22 - more than 31 months after XP's EoL. If Moonchild ends support for Windows 7 before August 2022, then Windows 7 diehards would actually have something to gripe about - and btw support for Windows 8 might also end at such time...1 point

Hardware assembled, needed new CMOS battery, added a CD-ROM drive. MSI main board, most everything's nForce, not sure that's good. The MSI site still has Windows 98 drivers for ethernet, audio, etc. Graphic card is ATI Xpert 2000 Pro 32 MB, will hunt driver. Still lots of Windows 98 drivers available online, try to get them direct from manufacturers site if possible. En masse 1.5 GB (3 modules) memtest from a Linux live-CD showed problems. Took some time to clean module contacts, then individually re-tested, finally en masse tested again, all good. Slow 10 GB rust drive prepped, fails SMART so SMART check was disabled in BIOS to allow unhindered boot. Sounds like there's sand inside! Used this noisy drive for years for business fax, hope it finishes another mission. Maintaining retro hardware is fun and rewarding. A little loving care and cleaning goes a long way. These RAM modules had some corrosion, easily removed with a soft, clean cotton cloth and isopropyl alcohol. After prolonged runtime, 2-3 years on a heavy use system, the power supply unit gets removed, dismantled, dry brushed and vacuumed clean. They get disgustingly dusty, are a fire hazard and stop providing cooling airflow. Helps keep them alive a long time. Heavy use systems also get a thorough tower cleaning: remove and clean in and around motherboard, remove and clean all cards and slots, re-seat all connections, re-seat CPU with fresh thermal paste. Old thermal paste is removed with alcohol and a clean cloth or cotton tips. Rarely cooling fan bearings need 1/2 a drop of light machine oil. Alcohol also works well to remove glue residue from unwanted case and component stickers/labels. The alcohol dries immediately and leaves no trace chemical. In BIOS usually activate a CPU temperature warning alarm between 60-70 degrees. Started Windows 98 install, already out of memory issues even after reducing to 1 GB physical RAM, will post more later. Tried system.ini modifications without success, maybe R. Loew's RAM limitation patch? Trying to test Windows 98's limits has been a good experience, as most users now have hardware greatly exceeding this stuff.1 point

You can PARTLY upgrade it by "Do-It-Yourself" ;-) Have played around with this, using blind trial&error method by just copying over some files from KMzilla154 (as I call it). At first it seemed too good to be true, all those crucial domains are finally accessible again, for KM1.6 too. But it's rather shaky, only a crutch. Meanwhile have come across some domains which are still blocked in this messy KM1.6, although they do open fine with roytam's expert build KMz154. After a bit more testing, am now suspecting this tweaked KM1.6 can only open the same domains as Opera12.02? For now that's still a huge step forward, for KM to catch up at least with Opera, but if anyone can figure out more that would be great. According to How Chrome is helping enterprises still using Windows 7, In the case of Windows XP, Chrome support was ultimately extended for a full 2 years after Microsoft's EoL date, ending in April 2016. (See Updates to Chrome platform Support. Also at that time, Chrome support for Windows Vista was terminated a full year before Microsoft's EoL date - a possibility that those running Windows 8/8.1 should perhaps beware of.) In all likelihood, Firefox will support Windows 7 longer than Chrome.1 point

Good question. Others may not be aware that Microsoft will reportedly support Edge on Windows 7 for the same timeframe as Google - which is a remarkable departure from Microsoft's usual EoL practices. (Perhaps they finally realized that using Internet Explorer support as a tool to force OS upgrades was a mistake that contributed to Chrome's current dominance, and now they don't want Chrome to gain even more market share among Windows 7 diehards.)1 point

No. The problem lies in the fact that noone has a clear idea of what testing or validation is, and programs are written, more often than not by lazy/sloppy programmers, but also by good, attentive and knowledgeable ones, that do not know anything about the actual processes involved (because there are always one or more middlemen involved, so that the actual final customer, the guy/gal that actually has to use the program or maintain/service the machine never communicates directly with them and viceversa). The program is anyway always late and what is released is invariably - in the best cases - an early beta, and all the bug finding and reporting is demandated to the client, that normally has no idea on how this is done (remember, the client is the one that pays the money to buy something that he has not the capabilities to develop in-house). It is peculiar (and I believe rather unique to the (largely bad) software industry to provide "solutions" that are not working (or not fully working) AND to put the blame on the clients (you know, again, the ones that actully pay for the service) OR asking them to lose hours, days, weeks into troubleshooting the crap they produced. More loosely it is called "professionalism" and most of the software industry has no idea of what it is. Imagine you go to your barber and he after taking your (good) money for a haircut gives you a pair of scissors telling you "If in the next few days you see some tuft sticking out of your head just cut it off" or - which is what the large software companies do - "You also owe me 100 bucks for a week of assistance, if you see some tuft sticking out you just drive here and I will cut it", or - alternatively - "In case you notice some hairs sticking out call me an I will be happy for a mere 200 bucks to come to your house and cut them level with the rest". Then you go to get your car from the mechanic and he tells you "Ok, I changed the tires, I am pretty sure that I did tighten the nuts properly, should you lose a wheel, don't worry, it is covered by warranty, you just bring me back the old wheel and I will fit a new tire on it for free". Then you go to a restaurant and the cook tells you "The food I prepare is fine, should you by any chance get poisoned i will reimburse you part of the bill". jaclaz1 point

As Windows 8/8.1 never caught on in the corporate world, I expect history to repeat itself. Not only in the case of Chrome, but I'm sure several other applications will drop support for Windows 7 and 8.x simultaneously, as with what happened back in the early-to-mid 2010s with Windows XP and Vista. There may be an outlier or two that does officially support 8.x but not 7 (there were actually several, where applications supported Vista+ but not XP), or there may be some programs that, despite officially "requiring" Windows 10, may continue to run on Windows 8.x anyway, but I wouldn't count on it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if I had to guess, Windows 8.x is more related to Windows 7 when it comes to APIs (at least on the desktop/win32 side of things, not UWP) so I'd say if something doesn't work with 7, it won't work with 8.x either unless it officially supports it. I would argue that Chrome support for Windows Vista was dropped even further back than that, with the release of Chrome 41 in March 2015, when Vista users were royally screwed over. This was the first version of Chromium/Chrome to lack a Windows Vista-exclusive build, when Vista users were simply thrown onto the XP version which caused a lot of Vista-exclusive APIs and features, most notably Windows Aero, to no longer be utilized. This was done apparently "due to lack of user feedback from Vista users", but I still believe they did it to "throw the baby out with the bathwater" so they wouldn't have to worry about supporting anything older than Windows 7. Still makes me furious to think about to this day. As Vista is much more similar to Win7, delivering its version of Chrome to Vista users would have made much more sense and would have made everyone much happier, but alas...1 point

It's been a while since I've logged in here so I'm glad to see you're still posting. I really hope that you and the family are doing well and that some sort of comfort is starting to set in. Rudy's death really hit hard for me for several reasons. One of them because even though I wouldn't consider him a great friend, I still considered him a friend and I really respected him. But also, because of what led him to passing away. Heart problems run in my family. I'm 30 going on 31 in a few months and I'm also extremely overweight. I was literally in a race car speeding towards heart problems and other awful stuff. Since his passing, I started eating healthier and a lot less. I stopped binging all together and no longer have the desire to stuff myself full of sweets. I also joined the local gym and I work out four to five times a week now. Since the end of September I'm down 22 pounds and I'm feeling great! My knee no longer hurts when I walk and I'm not completely wiped out after walking only four blocks. I still have a super long journey ahead of me but considering how hard life was getting for me and then Rudy's unfortunate passing, it really started clicking that I needed to do something otherwise it won't be long and I'd end up joining him. So while this is really for me in the end, I want to dedicate a part of this to Rudy's memory, a great man taken from us way too early.1 point

Windows 2000 the "forgotten" best MS OS We often hear the arguments between Windows XP vs Windows 7 as being the best MS OS. In many respects the debate is worthy of such arguments of which we will be still discussing this for a LONG time. Xp and 7 are going nowhere and will remain in my opinion #2 or#3 and #1 MS OS for a long time. Yes you heard me. A long time even after Windows 10 is released. However, somehow Windows 2000 is often overlooked and lost when considered as being one of the best. I really think there are a couple points which would address the “why” and “how” this came to be. Arguably Windows 2000 was one of the most stable resource efficient OS when it was introduced. It was also the first NT based MS OS which was both brought to market for Businesses and personal use. Prior to 2000 it was DOS based for the personal users and NT based for the business environment. Now with that being said I think the reasons for the quick demise can be summed up as follows. #1. During the time of Windows 2000, say within a two year time frame either before or after give or take you essentially had four MS operating systems which all came out at or around each other. For example you had Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and of course XP. With as glut of OS the domination of marketshare was diluted. #2. Windows 2000 before the release of XP was quickly taking over as the dominant OS. Windows ME was just plain bad, and 98 SE like ME was built on DOS. By this time DOS was just an architecture which could not support the incredible increase in technology. However, 2000 was cut short by XP when it was released soon after 2000. #3. With the release of XP MS had no intention of really supporting it's “little brother” windows 2000. Lets face it 2000 and XP were quite similar and MS could easily provided better support and updates to 2000 very easily. Let us not forget that the UUrollup for 2000 provides many such upgrades. #4. I believe that the 2000/XP era was the first signs of MS demise due to its own arrogance. They essentially showed no regard for really maintaining Windows 2000 once XP was out. We see this pattern now even greater with their arrogance by not giving the customer what “they” want and essentially killing off the previous OS. Now one could argue that 2000 was supported for a long time of which it was seeing that extended support ended in 2010. However, 2000 which is very similar to XP was neglected in other areas particularly software and other MS programs. What say you?1 point

I prefer Windows 2000 over other OSes for these reasons (among others): -I like the coloured box motif. The old Windows flag is the best. -Scales very well to hardware, running on a 486SX with 32 MB RAM to a i7-6950X with 32 GB (I have a Xeon X5670 with 12 GB DDR3-1333) -feels slicker than later Windows OSes. I can't get over how XP and 2003 take a split-second to bring CPU information in system properties whereas on 2000 it's instant. The only issues are with lack of MTP support and that my room feels like a sauna after running my workstation for a few hours (win2k forces my Xeon to run constantly at ~3.192 GHz, when it's supposed to be 2.93 GHz stock and with dynamic frequency scaling). If I succumb to heat stroke this summer because of Windows 2000, my next stop will be 2003 x86.1 point

I totally agree with this! I actually sort of laugh on the whole "doomsday" that is Windows 7. In fact some users on YouTube go so far to say that Windows 7 is dangerous to use, even as of right now. Um, how exactly? It's still fully receiving updates from Microsoft. It's still fully supported by all browser makers except for the fact that IE11 is outdated by today's real standards. So explain this whole doomsday thing to me as long as you have all Windows Updates installed. Windows 10 can be just as vulnerable to attack as long as someone finds an exploit that nobody knows about and uses it to their advantage. There's a song by Joe Nichols called The Impossible, and I honestly think it can apply to operating system software perfectly. "Unsinkable ships sink, unbreakable walls break Sometimes the things you think'll never happen Happen just like that Unbendable steel bends If the fury of the wind is unstoppable I've learned to never underestimate the impossible" When you think you have a bullet proof product, something will come along just to show you how wrong you really are. Windows 98 proved that, Windows 2000 proved that, Windows XP proved that, and anything else will continue to prove it.1 point
-
It's ironic how people decry the older operating systems like W2k Pro as outdated, yet can't even trust newer Windows 7 or Windows 10 systems far enough to let them update. These days, generally speaking, lots of new stuff sucks--because people take it for granted that new stuff is better. From that presumption, lazy thinking ensues, and movement replaces progress. So, although we still "go," we go backwards instead of forward. Windows illustrates the regression.1 point

I agree Windows 2000 is and always will be the best MS system! I have Windows 2000 installed on my PC with the unofficial updates of BWC and writing from there. BWC says that it will work only until 2099 but without any problem it passes to 2100 but others will think how it is only in x86 will be until 2038 due to the bug Y2K38 but in Windows based on NT the operating system is x86 or x64 the maximum year is 9999.1 point

Hi there. It has been quite a long time since I last visited this forum. It is good it is still here. Unlike 1998-1999, when W95 became obsolete, you can yet run lots of software in a system that if properly setup, is unbreakable. I am planning to move into centos 6, and keep running xp in a VM, because most of what I use and need runs in XP. Below goes a SUMO generated list of the software I am running. Since I do not use all that software at the time, a few may have become obsolete, but seriously doubt it. In some cases, I needed to do some minor hacking here and there, mostly based on internet research -and I have roughly documented the process (I have migrated equipment with the same setup since 2005-6). I will be happy to share those (on a case by case basis), if interested, as devolution to the community that allowed me to enjoy XP for so long. Hope it is of use. Cheers! Cheers! This is why it is critical to use the Internet Archive! Microsoft has already removed most Windows XP pages, but I have described in detail in this forum how to access them. The key is that the Internet Archive not only archives the pages themselves, it also archives the downloads that are linked to on those pages! As long as you can access the pages, you'll be able to access the downloads. I have provided examples of this here with the service packs for Windows 2000 and Windows XP, and also for the Internet Explorer downloads for those operating systems. Microsoft may have deleted the downloads, but they will live on permanently on the Internet Archive. Please click on this link to visit that post. Mozilla FTP is a page you could potentially have a problem with in the future, because the Internet Archive doesn't archive FTP pages (I'm not sure why!) You'll also have issues with Google Chrome since Google contains ROBOTS.TXT. However, the other websites you should no issues with. I have archived quite a few things in my XP end-of-life (EOL) directory. I never archived Google Earth for XP because browsers now have mapping capability and Google Earth seems like a bygone era. However, I did archive it for Windows 2000 (version 5.2.1.1588) a few years ago, and I'd be happy to archive Google Earth for XP.1 point

This is incorrect. CS5.5 is the last release to *officially* support Vista, and CS6 is the last release to *officially* support XP, but it still runs on Vista anyway. Photoshop CS5 system requirements: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/system-requirements.html#main_Older_Versions "Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 3; Windows Vista® Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1 (Service Pack 2 recommended); or Windows 7" Photoshop CS6 system requirements: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/system-requirements.html "Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 3 orMicrosoft Windows 7 with Service Pack 1. Adobe® Creative Suite® 5.5 and CS6 applications also support Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. See the CS6 FAQ for more information about Windows 8 support.*"1 point

I second this. Despite Vista's higher number of similarities to Windows 7 compared to XP, most vendors have decided to drop XP and Vista support simultaneously, such as Google, Intel, Mozilla, AMD, NVIDIA, Microsoft (with Office), and there's probably more. If you want to create a separate list for Windows XP, refer to my list for Windows Vista here, as much of the information here is also applicable to XP (SP2+):1 point

Windows 2000 was actually suppose to replace both Windows NT and Windows 98, but that didn't happen. Windows 2000 replaced NT while Me replaced 98. I think that happened for the same reasons a year later that XP came out and there were lots of compatibility problems. Why do you think Application Compatibility was introduced in the first place? Windows XP was a Windows NT kernel OS and on the gold version, many programs for Windows 9x wouldn't run on it or really had to be forced to. In my opinion, it wasn't until Service Pack 1 and especially Service Pack 2 that many of these problems were ironed out and also more XP things were introduced or patches for existing software was produced. I think that's why even though Windows 2000 wasn't so widespread, even though it was and in my opinion, still is, the most stable OS there is. Windows 7 in my opinion is just a hugely patched up and poorly rearranged Windows 2000/XP OS. One of Windows 2000's downfalls is the fact it lacks a wifi connector, so you need to either rely on an adaptors client to connect to wifi or use something like BVRP Connection Lite. That's one of the big reasons many couldn't use the OS today. However, with all the unofficial updates and patches by the members of this community, it has really prolonged the life of Windows 2000 and I still use it to this day, although it's getting a bit harder in some areas. The worst part seems to be video editing and using software that utilizes DirectX10+, which luckily blackwingcat does include a DirectX10 stub in his kernel extension project which does help a lot, there are still some versions of software that using his tool, no matter how hard you force, it just will refuse to install at all saying that you need Vista or higher to run. But I myself would certainly agree with the OP, Windows 2000 had the best potential of all the Windows OSs and I think Windows 10 is still going to be garbage. I do not like all this online integration AT ALL. It was bad enough with Windows XP activation....but with so much of the web going into Windows 10, and even in 8.1....one does wonder, why is it being so forced? Out of all Windows users, how many truly utilize that sort of capability? Or are they just putting it in because they can? Is there a reason you still can't use a web browser to do all your online activities like you could in the past? Oh, so you can retain your settings on all computers with Windows 10 that you log into.....BIG DEAL! I'll stick to my non-big brother version of Windows, thank you very much. I will use Windows 2000 until I can't anymore, then it's on to Linux.1 point

I think Windows 2000 was a very sturdy OS. 15 years later, there isn't much you can't do with it. Service Pack 4 really stabilized the OS and added USB 2.0 support. To run most current software you will want this update (W2KSP4_EN.EXE) along with the Update rollup (Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.EXE). While Avast 7 [unintentionally?] dropped support for Windows 2000, Avast 8 supports Windows 2000 and is probably the most feature rich antivirus available for Windows 2000 with shields, etc. I really think security is a non-issue if you use responsible computing habits. I have been using and experimenting with unsupported Windows versions for years and never got hacked or had identity theft. If you aren't responsible or careful, social engineering and phishing attacks will compromise anyone, I don't care if you are running a current patched up-to-date OS. Use common sense and you will be fine!1 point

sugabeats, no offence intended of course , but this topic is not really "new", it has already been discussed and beaten to death several times on MSFN, quite a lot of members have similar opinions to your ones *like* : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158823-why-you-should-avoid-buying-windows-8/page-5#entry1020941 http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155290-windows-8-deeper-impressions/page-43#entry1013639 some (JFYI) even think that the mouse behaviour on 2K was far better than in XP: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155923-any-way-to-cannibalize-the-windows-2000-mouse-driver/ jaclaz1 point

Yes it is possible. More or less exactly if you used to use Windows 2000 "Low" accel, but only somewhat approximately if you used to use Medium or High. Do you remember what W2K setting you had? And what settings do you have now (OS/Refresh rate/Mouse polling rate/Text Size)? (If you run the MarkC Windows 7 + Vista + XP Mouse Acceleration Fix Builder, and accept the default values, your current setup will be in the .REG filename created, just also tell me your polling rate.)1 point

TheWalrus: To answer your question to the best of my ability... I've been gaming on Win2k OS for many years and I have a perfect twitch reflex to the way the mouse behaves. I can turn exactly 180/360/up/down with perfect aim. See something in my field of view and twitch and hit it spot on every time. I have been using it so long that I can make twitch shots without even thinking and faster than I can consciously interpret similar to how you jerk your arm away from something hot before you realize what happened. With the acceleration feature I get very little fatigue because I never have to move the mouse large distances, just speed control. Trying to relearn on another OS's revamped acceleration style is like somebody amputated my hand and gave me somebody elses. There's constant over/under shooting my aim and twitch reflexes are always hit or miss and can never introspectively figure out exactly what is different or wrong, only that it's just not right. With Win2k's scheme, I'm usually the best if not very close to it and also get accused of cheating often because fast twitches look like aimbots. I can still play very well other schemes, but it's never 100%. I never truly shine no matter how many hours, days, weeks I put into it to relearn. That original twitch reflex is always there and spot on with Win2k. I hope that answers it.1 point

Windows 2000 mouse accel is described here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc978664.aspx ... and here (excuse the translated Japanese and missing images): http://translate.google.co.nz/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fweb.archive.org%2Fweb%2F20101029202016%2Fhttp%3A%2F%2Furawa.cool.ne.jp%2Ftb-works%2F37_Win_Mouse_Driv.htm W2K (and prior) accel was a crude mechanism using 1 or two threshholds. With no accel (MouseSpeed=0), mouse-to-pointer movement was 1-to-1. With 1 threshhold accel (MouseSpeed=1), mouse-to-pointer movement was 1-to-1 below (or at) the threshhold, and doubled when the mouse moved faster than MouseThreshold1. No smoothing, just a sudden jump, doubling of pointer speed. With 2 threshhold accel (MouseSpeed=2), mouse-to-pointer movement was 1-to-1 below (or at) the threshhold, and doubled when the mouse moved faster than MouseThreshold1 and quadrupled (×4) when faster than MouseThreshold2. The values for the 3 settings (MouseSpeed, MouseThreshold1, MouseThreshold2) depended on which W2K pointer accel radio button was chosen (None, Low, Medium, High): http://ltxfaq.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1205/~/slk-mouse-synchronization-issues#Windows2000 If you still use a mouse polling rate of 125Hz (or use the same polling rate as you had on W2K), it is possible to quite closely emulate the W2K "Low" setting using a XP/Vista/7 SmoothMouse*Curve curve. Ditto, it is possible to somewhat approximate the W2K Medium and High settings with an XP/Vista/7 curve. Here is some XP/Vista curves that approximate the Windows 2000 "Low" accell curve: http://www.gamefront.com/files/20858946/XP_Vista_MouseFix__XXHz_DPI_96_Scale_1_to_1_2_to_1_9___6_of_11_zip When I have some free time, I may build some "Windows 2000"-like curves for Windows 7 also.1 point
