  2. Don't waste your time on him, he's clearly here for trolling. Btw, 5800X3D it's Zen 3 architecture with increased L3 size through vertical stacking.

  3. @msfntor Where do you keep finding all these thing you post? Regarding the last one, it's terrifying how meat sacks we're trapped in can fail us at any time.

  4. Sure you can. There are people, who still use Windows XP and Vista. First, I want to clarify that people come here, in order to help reviving these older operating systems. It‘s in no ones interest to treat them like „abandoned ware“ here. There are masterminds like @win32, who put so much effort into developing Kernels for older systems, so that we can run our favorite OS, no matter how old it is, nowadays. In my opinion, people who do nothing but repeat what the richy rich companies like M$ or Google say and oppositely try to make everyone not use those OS, have nothing to do here. No logic input, only helpless statements. If we wanted to hear „give up, move to Windows 10 everyone“, we wouldn‘t come here! There are tough times waiting for us now. As far as I know, Chrome 109 is really the last one for Windows 7 and no methods exist to run newer ones. I am not using Windows 7, but 8.1, which can indeed run Chrome 110. It took @win32 also a lot of effort to develop an Extended Kernel for Windows Vista, which made us run newer Chrome versions on it. You have to wait for an extended Kernel for Windows 7 as well and until then, I would simply use Firefox (or Chrome till February 2023). As far as Security Updates, you already mentioned PosReady 7

  7. Very impressive! I was able to tweak my LTSB down to 29 processes and 290 threads. It's been a while since doing my tweaks but I seem to recall that the "default install" had somewhere between 48 and 60 processes! Don't recall the exact number, but it was a far cry from only 29

The original post was removed as it was continuing to confuse users. There will be further discussion about the evolution of the extended kernel in the coming pages.

  9. yeah windows 7 and 8 can't launch games mostly released after 2021, but the most popular online games are still running on windows 7 and 8. I don't play them, but if I wanted to I would just use windows 10. This does not change the fact that windows 7 is still a very capable os in 2023 and will be up until 24 or 25.

  12. I run even more older environments than all of you combined together ! But facts are facts, and when someone wants to enter an argument (I mean, a good healthy argument for the sakes of finding a solution, not a scandalous or trolling like they want it to be), one needs to provide links and confirmed technical aspects , this is what MSFN is for ! Sources like "trust me bro" are no good, being a mature male, you gotta understand this, no ?

  13. I have to concur with you. Years ago, I was the same way as D.Drake about using XP as a daily driver on the Internet. It irked me that people here didn’t want to conform to the conditions of a Microsoft license. I embraced Vista and never looked back. And I wanted the “Luddites” on MSFN to follow suit. That is until ... Windows 10 I really love Windows 8, as many of you know. I came to see how my usage of an EOL product was misunderstood by some. Now I could see how self-centred I was to the XP fans here. I remembered that until Windows 8 came along, that my installation of Windows XP x64 Edition was likely the most stable and fastest environment I had ever worked on. Before that, I recall my years with Windows 2000 with equally great fondness. So, how could I be such a d—k head to those that wanted to run older environments? Sure, my idea of desirable vintage would be 2012 flat. So while I detest the Mozilla Proton interface and the look of Windows 10, I rather like the look of Windows 8 and Quantum. There was still some sort of dimension with the flatness then. Heck, I wish outlook.com web mail still looked like the Windows 8 style Metro client, like it did until 2015. And while daily Internet use of Windows 2000 and XP baffles me, I shouldn’t impose my feelings on others. Moreover, I’m amazed at some of the progress people here have made getting more recent browsers to work on past OS builds. Roytam1 is a big contributor in this arena, but myPal 68 is an even bigger achievement. Apparently, more modern attempts at browsers on Windows 9x are also being developed. I never thought I’d see that. I've come to realize that MSFN is a haven for vintage computing, plain and simple, and one should embrace that. I wish I had been more gracious years ago.

  14. I already know the answer to this question. Small text file is located in $MFT record and not occupied any cluster - that's why TRIM has no access to it.

  16. it doesn't really matter when the motherboard or the chipset was initially released when it has been updated constantly... point is on that platform you can use a modern cpu that came out as recently as 8 months ago, namely the 5800X3D, and even the Zen 3 architecture as a whole is just around 2 years old (released in Nov 2020). so saying you can't use hardware released during the past 6 years or there are no official win 7 drivers for them is just bollocks.

  20. @George King I tested your NVMe x64 drivers from the Ported_Drivers_for_XP2ESD.7z Samsung_NVMe_3.3.0.2003 - error while installation in .inf file Generic_NVMe_10.4.49.0 - after restart WinXP SP2 x64 not boot - probably BSOD Generic_NVMe_6.1.7601.23403 - working :-) With this driver, the O&O Defrag program no longer displays a warning and makes a TRIM - the progress bar goes as a percentage - unfortunately after making a TRIM in the sector in which the file was still no zero but trimcheck-0.7-win64.exe (second run after TRIM by O&O Defrag) displays that TRIM works: Maybe I check the sector in WinHex badly ??? EDITED ===== My test text file is too small because it has only a few bytes. I noticed that the trimcheck program creates a 64MB test file. So I copied to the desktop some other file, e.g. explorer.exe 1.30MB, checked the sector in WinHex, removed the file - also from the Recycle Bin, I made a TRIM in O&O Defrag and now I have zero in the sector where the file was So I have a way to make a TRIM on the NVMe disk at WinXP SP2 64-bit - ported driver Generic_NVMe_6.1.7601.23403 + O&O Defrag v17.5.559 P.S. I wonder why Smart Defrag doesn't do TRIM ??? I am only thinking about one thing - why I can't use a small text file for the test - a few bytes ???

Also, you think a 2mb application for updating them is safer than these pure certificates ? This is all debatable, to say the least. I used his certificates for all this time and noticed no odd behaviour.

  28. Seem like the main contributors of XP/2003 ACPI.SYS are not as interested in Windows 2000 as XP/2003. As @Mov AX, 0xDEAD said, no one can make Windows 2000 ACPI.SYS compatible with modern hardwares by binary patching (Adding ACPI 2.0 extended syntax and fixing known ACPI incompatibilites) Before XP source code leaked, modders already knew the limit of binary pathing original ACPI.SYS. They even tried to use ACPI.SYS from Windows Vista Beta 1, since it supports ACPI 2.0 syntax. I think more realistic way is either using Extended Core to replenish missing functions, modifying Windows XP ACPI.SYS source code to make it compatible with Windows 2000, or both. @blackwingcat's Extended Core already has three missing functions of NTOSKRNL.EXE. The last one is HeadlessDispatch. Does anyone have idea to handle it? Will it be possible to make ACPI.SYS process this function itself?

  29. @reboot12 @George King It also depends on the NVMe drivers and the drive model. I have tried O&O Defrag for all my NVMe drives (Samsung, WD, Crucial, Sabrent) and the trim icon becomes available for all of them only with MS and Samsung drivers (note that the latter sometimes gives an error at system shutdown). Only for the Samsung 970Evo the trim is enabled in O&O with all NVMe drivers.

  31. You don't know what a person might be going through. You don't know what he can bring you or how he can inspire you. I always prefer to be kind and polite. When I want to hear something unpleasant I turn on the news. After all these years since w10 release, I have been testing and tweaking it trying to get it as fast as w8.1 on the same hardware and noticed what really makes it better in memory usage and laggy in general use (ui lag). I searched for tweaks year by year... and I can say the os CAN be faster than w8.1. I even know at which beta build the os makes a difference in terms of slowness compared to early builds and 8.1 but I don't want to go offtopic here. Just remember how fast 98 and 2000 (even XP) were on normal hardware and you will understand how losing cpu cycles has been normalized these days. Don't believe me? You still think w10 it's "always" faster? Ok, just take a look at Windows 7 market share percentage and ask yourself why people is still interested in an "old" OS. MS optimizes the kernel/OS as much as they can so that Telemetry and Metro running in the background does not penalize the general system peformance (that's why they recommend you a list of the minimum required cpus to run it) but once you get rid of these and other things you have an OS faster than w8.1... cause you won't release an os slower than its predecessor, right? Do you still don't believe it? I'll maybe release a software someday to really optimize windows considering all these tweaks here and there... it's really a different OS once you heavy tweak it. Well, sorry for going offtopic and thanks to everyone who liked my customized w10 with w8 theme. Edit: Anyway I'll always love Windows 8.0, but I can't completely ignore Windows 10 when Intel isn't releasing iGPU drivers to run w7,w8 on new hardware...

  36. @vinifera @UCyborg @Jody Thornton take a look at my customized LTSB 2015 for a low profile fanless laptop with NVME ssd. I used files from windows 8.1 and windows beta 10.0.9888 (First beta with w10.0 kernel version & last beta with w8.1 theme style in taskbar & windows): uxtheme uxinit themeui shellstyle from 9888 & windows 8.1 theme folder c:\windows\resources\themes Only StartIsBack is used for the taskbar. Yes, processes and threads tweaked by me. Also take a look at the explorer without ribbon and explorer navigation arrows and icons... (imageres.dll from 8.1) caption buttons can be tweaked to make it look smaller like windows 8.1, titlebar font is the same as 8.1 button and dialog style can be changed too to be more like 8.1 but wasn't done in the screenshot. (you can see inactive window black border... w10 dwm? ) No patches. All files are MS original from other builds:

And, I would never waste my time to load all tabs in my session while starting my browser, so logically, browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand is set to true. But, that's not enough. For years, I always install the extension "Lull The Tabs" to unload automatically tabs which are currently not in use and to ensure that tabs are only loaded if I click onto them. All that to minimize used system resources. Cheers, AstroSkipper PS: As far as I can see, your English seems to be quite good and not as bad as you claimed in my thread.

I know you are giving me advices, and I appreciate that (yes, I never said your advices are bad!), but you need to understand that I can't take advices to consideration immediately. Maybe for some, but not for all of them. For example, your advices about wanting me to go outside, I also really wish to go outside often myself too, but it's not something that I can take care of at the moment, maybe later, but not now.

  46. That happens because the VME instructions in AMD Zen and Intel 11th Gen+ are broken. Possibly because 32Bit operating system support was dropped starting with these architectures. A Simple fix for this can be found here, works just fine: https://github.com/JHRobotics/patcher9x/releases/

  47. Hi, if anyone is interested, I got VMware Player 16.0 "official" release working on Windows 7. Download: http://69.112.236.57/nextcloud/index.php/s/RWKwBkLoFPdWz93 This is still largely untested, especially the VMware installer is flaky, but VMware itself works very well on my main Win7. You're supposed to reboot right after the installation and then put contents of vmware16_win7 folder in VMware\VMware Player\x64. The video: Edit: Added the VMware Workstation installer. If license key registration fails, try to install VMware Workstation 15.x first, and then directly upgrade to 16.

  48. Trying to build it now. Despite the fact that I'm building on WinXP, I still had to explicitly tell it to build for WinXP: perl Configure VC-WIN32 -D_WIN32_WINNT=0x0501 Without the -D just about every test failed; apparently the stupid Configure script just assumes Win 7+ rather than grabbing the version it's actually running on . That may explain why so many of the "compatible with XP" builds aren't actually compatible with XP. Edit: Final (apparently XP-compatible) build of OpenSSL v1.1.1b is about 3 MB when written to a .7z archive file. You can download it from my company's Web site.
