  1. I'm a bit late to the announcement but this is extremely sad news for me. I credit Den a lot for me becoming a moderator here on MSFN. I still remember he offered the position to me to which I humbly and graciously accepted it. We had some good discussions back and forth and because he was originally into Windows 98 like I was, we easily found common ground that way. Den was a very kind, cordial, and courteous person. When I first heard he was diagnosed with cancer, I was deeply saddened. I lost both my grandparents to cancer and my mother is a cancer survivor, so I don't like cancer very much to say the least. As optimistic as he seemed to be about keeping the cancer at bay, I was really hoping he'd return one day like nothing ever happened. But he'd go months without any sort of an update and that was very worrying to me. Now the worst has happened, but he is at peace now and pain-free, which is the best thing out of a horrible situation like this. Rest in Peace buddy, until we meet again!

  2. Sad news for everyone here at MSFN. One of our forum supervisors, Dencorso, passed away on October 24th, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Apparently he was still upbeat and optimistic about the future a few weeks before he passed. My memories of Den go back quite a few years. He was incredibly helpful to me with technical problems, which is what this board is all about of course, initially mainly with Windows 98, and latterly with Windows XP. He was immensely supportive too when I first became a moderator here, something I will always be grateful for. He was definitely one of the good guys, and will be sorely missed here. Please add your memories here of working with Den. Thanks, Dave.

  8. Brief Update. So the search for updates in WUv4 works thanks @WinFX again only unfortunately results.asp is missing because it was not archived properly. It redirects to splash.asp?page=3. That means we can't view or install the updates. I think that we will find a solution for this problem. The Update Catalog is the next project. Here some screenshots:

  21. I am so sad. He was a great person. I knew him since my first days on MSFN, many, many years ago, and besides the public interactions on the board we had a lot of correspondence via PM's, both on computing and on a whole range of different topics, from cinema and TV to art and linguistics (he could read and understand very well Italian and I can understand a very little Portuguese, we had a common interest in Latin - as root of both languages - and we often exchanged opinions on these and many other things), I considered him a friend. I will greatly miss him and our exchanges. Besides his great work in helping and advising other people on technical matters, he was always polite and just (as a moderator), while often managing to keep a veil of humour in his posts. He told me about his illness, describing it as a "a quite mean cancer", from the tone of his latest messages he was fighting fiercely against it, and was hoping to defeat it only one month before, at the end of september. May he R.I.P. jaclaz

  26. I think (but do not quote me on this) that it may work, though I don't see the actual scope of this replacing of the processor, the notebook has probably a Core i3 or i5, there shouldn't be much difference in speed/performance replacing the original processor with a Pentium 6100, they seem very similar, at least on this comparison: https://technical.city/en/cpu/Core-i3-380M-vs-Pentium-P6100 Maybe if it has a Celeron, there would be some improvement, but I doubt it will be much, if any: https://technical.city/en/cpu/Celeron-P4600-vs-Pentium-P6100 Also the Fujitsu BIOS might be locked to the default processor installed in factory, clock speed of the P6100 seem to be same as the Celeron, but different from i3 and i5. IMHO all in all such an upgrade (which seems more like a same-level-grade) could be risky/problematic (if possible at all) without bearing any noticeable advantage. jaclaz

  28. That laptop model is declared compatible with XP: https://www.levnapc.cz/ProductsFiles/FS-Lifebook-S710-technicke-specifikace-en.pdf Is the question only related to the new processor? In itself the processor seems compatible with XP.: https://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=719&graphics=HD Pentium P6100 So the question is if specifically you can replace that specific processor on the specific laptop? jaclaz

  30. Try installing the palefill extension https://github.com/martok/palefill/releases (direct link) OR enable dom.webcomponents.enabled (or dom.webcomponents.customelements.enabled) option in about:config. YouTube may break, however, but you can do it in a separate browser.

  31. @Taiga-chan many thanks for the follow up and feedback. It appears I have a bit of catching up to do and learning. for the time being I'll be doing some reading. I've used nlite for xp for years, never actually tried RVMI. I will certainly give it my attention. * Got the batch files: http://www.mediafire.com/file/tch7bfccylk9nqi/Config_XP-64_29Dec19.7z/file

  32. RDP is only used in actual installations. Windows Media Player 11 addon, you can use nLite and RVMI for .NET and C++. RVMI lets you resolve filenames. Add this name after the _Addon file. If you don't add it, RVMI will not see the file. You can skip some methods if you already use addon.

  35. This is already "false" here by default. Does "captivedetect.canonicalURL" even work in that case? [Edit] Now I understand. See here. In Firefox the service is always enabled with no option in the GUI to disable it. Same for Basilisk. Has to be done via 'about:config'.

  38. Many Internet forums now operate the extremely heavy, new generation "Discourse" engine. Old browsers including New Moon receive a read-only compatibility version, which is completely unusable. It may be "clean and modern" and completely crippled. The page extends below the screen, and there is no apparent way to scroll it at all. Disabling JavaScript doesn't do it. I just found out that appending ?_escaped_fragment_ (or &_escaped_fragment_ ) to the URL makes the page scrollable normally. It's perplexing why Discourse doesn't work like this by default. For example, https://boards.straightdope.com/t/how-are-people-feeling-about-discourse/926428?_escaped_fragment_

  39. That's totally normal, Windows Update V6 wasn't made to support Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition. The ActiveX is only for Windows NT (2000 SP3 and newer).
