  2. I have noticed that remote web fonts have made some web pages difficult to read clearly, and contribute to browser slowdown with font rendering. If you follow the instructions in this link (credit birdie at TechPowerUp), you experience faster web browsing speeds, and (in my opinion) clearer text. I noticed a huge speed increase. Disabling web fonts in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome Some of us hate downloadable web fonts so here's how you can stop websites (including techpowerup) from forcing their glorious fonts down your throat. 1) Mozilla Firefox Open about:config Set "gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled" to false. 2) Google Chrome Right Click Chrome's launcher icon, click "Properties". At the end of the launcher string add the following: " --disable-remote-fonts" (without quotes). You're done. Before: After:

  3. I have been wondering, you use Firefox 78 that is not officially supported on Vista, with the extended kernel and you along with Dixel seem rather adamant to update, so you use local method. I along with @Ximonite use the system file replacement method with all Vista updates installed and we don't have your issue. Don't misunderstand me. Think about it. Also, respect @xper

  4. @XPerceniol user_pref("gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled", false); user_pref("gfx.downloadable_fonts.woff2.enabled", false); That means you had forbidden to download icon FONTS at every page visit. Usually linked directly from googlefonts (probably great for tracking), as all major websites do nowadays. Your other settings are probably innocent...

  5. I'd almost bet one of the three settings above, or maybe even all 3 of 'em, are critical ones. But even in case I'm wrong, congrats for the successful troubleshooting!

  6. Hello all, I present to you the ultimate Windows Vista Modernisation Guide. I was inspired by @WinClient5270's YT video on the same and also by the Windows 2000 modernisation guide over at w2k.phreaknet.org, but I wanted to add on to the video and present the info in forum post form, and so I have created this thread. Please note : I won't be talking very much about hardware support here. Compatible hardware with Windows Vista : Pre-Install Recommendations: This is purely a recommendation and not an order, but please try to have atleast 8 GB of RAM and a good SSD. Yes, Vista does not support native TRIM for SSDs but it can be done either through manufacturer provided SSD utilities or (if manufacturer utilities are either not available, do not support Vista or do not perform TRIM) SSD Tweaker Pro, IOBit Smart Defrag or other such utilities. Also, with an SSD, I have found performance on Vista to be slightly faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware. Install and post-install instructions: 1) Grab your installation media and make sure your computer supports USB booting, if you wish to install via USB. Install Vista and install PC manufacturer provided drivers (if any) and make sure you have you have a driver updater app such as Driver Booster or SDI ready. 2) Install Driver Booster and update the remaining drivers. It nags you to buy the Pro edition sometimes, but it's easy to ignore. 3) Install WinCDEmu, a CD emulator that eliminates the need of burning CD's/DVD's for installing softwares such as MS Office and brings the Windows 8+ feature of mounting ISO files directly to Vista. Also, install VLC media player, Foxit Reader/SumatraPDF etc.etc. for basic functionality. Also, install any office suite of your choice. LibreOffice and OpenOffice are also fine but I recommend MS Office 2007/2010 as they have the best compatibility with .docx, .xlsx, .pptx etc. file types (more preferably 2010). 4) Install ClamWin Antivirus that still receives definition updates and actively supports Windows 95 through 10 or Avast Antivirus (these are the 2 antivirus programs that have worked well for me on Vista). If you wish, you may harden your security cover by installing Malwarebytes 3.5.1. NOTE : I have provided the link to the Last versions of software for Vista forum thread for users' reference. 5) Update your Vista until at January 2020 to install the latest version of the extended kernel (07.25.2022) at the time of editing this post. And since Windows Update no longer works, use offline updating or update slipstreaming. I won't provide detailed info about slipstreaming. However, if you do want a detailed update slipstreaming guide, check out @asdf2345's tutorial below (NOTE: this tutorial is only applicable for slipstreaming pre-EOL updates): One of the best tools for updating even now and beyond is DISM++, but if it is inconvenient for some users, I have another method that will work. Josh Davidson over at Youtube has created a video on how to update Windows Vista completely offline without using DISM++ or slipstreaming. Also, there is a patch available for download from MyDigitalLife that restores Windows Update on Vista. created by @abbodi1406. Link to the video: Server 2008 updates can be downloaded manually. NOTE: Here's the link to the Server 2008 updates for Vista MSFN thread. 6) Once your Vista is up to date, you may install the Vista extended kernel. Please note : Keeping in mind that @win32's extended kernel is in WIP stage at the time of writing this post, this step can be a bit risky at times if not executed with 100% precaution, it may lead to unwanted consequences and a reinstall might be needed in some rare cases. After installing the extended kernel, you can install a modern web browser for a better browsing experience. 7) If you download large files often but have trouble finding a download manager, I recommend using Xtreme Download Manager as it is very good and gets the job done. You may download the installer from retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com . Suggestions, additions or corrections to this guide are most welcome. I hope this becomes a valuable piece of information for Vista holdouts!

  8. The website is completely broken for me . Any pop-up menu is not working , even sign-in . I can't edit posts , I can't select options in the messenger . Everything worked fine right until the recent changes. Clear cache and reboot PC is not helping ( surpise xD ) . I'm on Chrome 88 and Vista.

  10. Good idea the guide, despite scrambled in SDI vs Driver Booster war and windows update issue. For the latter, i've used WSUSOffline v10.9.2 (last version supporting Vista) to download everything - Vista Box Checked on a clean installation of Vista SP2, and after that used a more recent WSUSOffline (don't remember the version) to download everything - Server 2008 Box Checked to get all the compatible Vista updates after Vista EOL.

  11. @D.Draker@Ximonite@Dave-H@dencorso@xper and other MSFN moderators/staff Guess what... Problem solved YAY - in both my palemoon [new moon] and basilisk [Serpent[ browsers - both @roytam1 browser builds. As you can (clearly) see, now, everything - all the buttons appear as they should! Here are the changes I made to my prefs.js file.. I Removed the following lines - which in turn, will now allow the following (user_pref("gfx.) settings to run at their default(s). So, it appears to be something having to do with "gfx", at least in my case. user_pref("gfx.blacklist.direct2d", 3); user_pref("gfx.canvas.azure.backends", "cairo"); user_pref("gfx.canvas.skiagl.dynamic-cache", false); user_pref("gfx.crash-guard.d3d11layers.feature-d2d", false); user_pref("gfx.crash-guard.d3d11layers.feature-d3d11", false); user_pref("gfx.crash-guard.status.d3d11layers", 2); user_pref("gfx.direct2d.disabled", true); user_pref("gfx.downloadable_fonts.disable_cache", true); user_pref("gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled", false); user_pref("gfx.downloadable_fonts.woff2.enabled", false); user_pref("gfx.font_rendering.cleartype.use_for_downloadable_fonts", false); user_pref("gfx.font_rendering.graphite.enabled", false); user_pref("gfx.font_rendering.opentype_svg.enabled", false); EDIT: Don't ask me why.. I just had a 'hunch' is was something to do with those settings :)

  12. I dislike the the new UI because I dislike the rounded nature of the new UI, the broken older browser compatibility, hidden edit button, and most of all, the trimmed email notifications. Even on mobile, I prefer the desktop UI over the new bottom control iOS copy UI. New Email Notifications (I use a dark theme): https://i.imgur.com/pRV4oo5.png Old Email Notifications: https://i.imgur.com/MYUJgbb.png I don't like it, and the biggest issue to me isn't even with the site itself, it's with the emails being cut off. Edit: Also, certain parts of the forum are much slower with the new UI and software.

  13. Forum style probs, more SELFHELP stuff: No clue what this does (messes?) in younger browsers, but in KM1.6/FF3.5 this shows the Hover menu on Profile name: html body.ipsApp li#cUserLink:hover ul#elUserLink_menu{display: inline-block !important;} html body.ipsApp ul#elUserLink_menu{background-color: yellowgreen !important;} html body.ipsApp ul#elUserLink_menu li {line-height: 1 !important;} Personally I get to see hardly ANY css at the moment, so this lets me at least recognize Quotes again: html body.ipsApp div.cPost_contentWrap blockquote { background-color: rgba(240,240,80,0.8) !important; outline: 2px solid peru; padding: 0px 8px; } Those codes can be restricted to specific websites, but hope that the "body.ipsApp" part is enough restriction to only apply on IPS-Forums - and that means all other IPS-forums too. Otherwise add this: @-moz-document url-prefix(https://msfn.org/board/) { ...code above... }

  15. Wanted to say thanks again to Roytam1. Your work is very much appreciated! Past months several of the addresses I regularly visit upgraded their websites, making even the browser releases from around 2019 crap out! Looking for the fastest or most responsive browser releases thus became a moot point, only Roytam1's more recent builds are now practically usable for me.

  24. Welcome to MSFN; Ricardo95.. Yeah, it is fun - isn't it to tinker. By far.. the very best investment in software was when I purchased acronis true image, so matter how many (countless) times I've botched my system (tinkering), I'm back in business in about 8 minutes with my 1 of several images I've created on removable storage - backups are soo important! See ya around the forum :)

  25. No, I've installed a third-party dark theme but it's still on even after a relaunch, and this is on regular Chrome 87.0.4280.88 portable, not Chromium. I'll look into this later and see if this happens on Chromium.

  26. Hi , first off , I guess it is good that you don't support "piracy" , though I don't understand why you even mentioned it . Are you accusing me of something ? Here you go , all official requirements for LEGAL game copies , it includes Windows Vista SP2 x64 ! https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/grand-theft-auto-v/12455 And modding is not piracy , it's official in this case. About the multiplayer , I told you , I don't know anything , sorry . And you just wrote "I only play multiplayer" , so this seems like a pointless discussion. Like I said , I don't understand why you are being like this . What have I done to deserve this ? I gave you a chance to have a normal conversation , yet I see hostility again . I don't like your tone and these "hints" , so please stop writing to me, I won't reply.

  27. I definitely agree with you, older electronics were built to last, that's why I love using them over new ones for sure! Even Soviet electronics, that were told to be avoided, still last for me to this day without any major repairs.

  28. Exactly, I'd say these are all excellent points. I know retrocomputers comprise a good portion of this forum, and as such they/we are all doing our part insofar as electronics go. Today, nothing is built to last, all kinds of rare earth minerals are endlessly purged and wasted - look at sour companies like Apple. They are the epitome of planned obsolescence. Proprietary hardware, exclusive software, planned obsolescence, hardware and software incompatibility, and mobile first. As an environmentalist, it disgusts me. As a technology enthusiast, it disgusts me even more. I'm also a bit of a telephone collector, sort of. My main phones are all vintage Bell System / Western Electric 500 rotary or 2500 TouchTone sets. Those things were built to last. I've plugged in 80 year old phones and those just work! Personally, I don't use anything older than the 500, which started in 1949. The F-style handsets before '49 are too uncomfortable. The G-style handsets on modern rotary and on 2500-type and Princess phones are the best. They're still widely used today - on pretty much all payphones and 2554 courtesy phones you often see in hotels, hospitals, convention centers, etc. I don't have a mobile (cell "phone") of any kind. Absolutely no interest in dropped calls, crappy call quality, brain cancer, wasting energy, or having a useless "computer" the size of a fingernail. Or something that needs to be charged over and over. It's so nice not having to charge ANYTHING on a regular basis. And MUCH better for the environment. Also, did I mention cell phone audio quality sucks? It really does. This kind of lifestyle is a complete rejection of e-waste, fads, frivolity, etc. I believe in things that work well that work well for a long time that are quality, durable, environmentally friendly, and top notch. So, environmentalist technologist types, here we are: - Using older operating systems and reusing or refurbishing older hardware - Using timeless telephones built to last. No cheap/expendable electronics here. Probably I'll die before any of my phones do. Half of them are already older than my parents. If anything ever breaks (doubt it), easy, just open up the phone and fix it. They were made for that. (SIDE NOTE: remember when you could actually go to a REAL phone story and buy a phone? Now, the only phone store is eBay, maybe flea markets. You try finding one these days, all you find is junk, maybe a couple real modern electronic phones in Office Depot if you're lucky...) - Using wired technologies. Ethernet cables are a superior species to radio waves. Seriously, who wants a high-latency low-quality connection? Ditch the Wi-Fi and cordless phones, and even more, ditch the 3G/4G/5G/etc. - Not subscribing to the whole continuous never-ending "upgrade" culture. As Windows 7 -> Windows 10 has shown (or pick your favorite good OS -> bad OS transition), the wow doesn't always start now, sometimes it already started and it's OK to hop off the train for a while, maybe forever. P.S. Vista is a good OS, I mean that in a different way. Technology today is responsible for about as much CO2 as the entire airline industry today - about 2%. So, technologists have a responsibility to the environment. Anyways, I'll be here, all Ethernet wired up, using Windows 7, Office 2010, Adobe Reader 11, and my classic top-notch telephones, no wireless or cordless products in sight! It's more than most people in developed Western countries are doing, at least 95% or maybe 99% of folks, so a good start I'd say!

  29. Whoa ! A feeling ? It seems it's only our first communication with you . I just asked you to specify your CPU model (which kinda makes sense for everyone here) and wrote that I don't have all of your issues with my CPU model . Which is obvious , because of another processor. And you got "a feeling" ?! You know , it may be better if we won't interact at all , so your feelings won't get touched / hurt , esp. considering your hostile behaviour against other user/users , for those who are wondering , just scroll back . And now back to the topic . I have some news . I removed almost everything from Vista RTM with Vlite , even more than I removed earlier , tested again on Intel Pentium G3470 (Haswell Refresh) . Only basic services were left in the ISO . Of course I removed defender too . Everything regarding remoting , readyboost , indexing . And guess what ? Almost zero cases of that bug . Right now I'm rebooting the machine over and over again , and the bug is like only 7% of the time. I disabled HPET in the BIOS too ! Also , I've noticed that if you want this bug to occur more frequently , you can start by disabling services with system configuration . But if you leave your system configuration in "normal startup" mode , the bug will happen only in some rarest cases. Overall , the system is very fast and stable . All drivers intact. Try using local redirection method , described here earlier, just scroll back. It's bulletproof. And you won't need all of those useless updates.

  30. Sorry , it's a bug with formatting in older browsers. If you're on XP , I suggest you try 360Explorer 13 with disabled telemetry (!), it's on Chromium 86. Also , Firefox 52 doesn't exhibit such behaviour on XP SP3 , as dencorso wrote. And about the other guy , I think he just made a copy/paste from my post , maybe he was feeling lazy to type it all by himself . Anyway , I remember dencorso wrote about younger generations being over-sensitive, it seems that it also applies to some other generations too...

  31. It's not necessarily bad, but it caused issues on my Vista as I had installed only Security+Quality rollups from Aug.2018 to Jan, 2020 and this was not a rollup, so it conflicted.

  32. I want to clarify, this is the case on my main laptop computer with an SSD. On my Pentium D desktop (which I'm planning to replace with my own Sandy/Ivy Bridge custom desktop in another 2 or 3 months) with a failing 160GB Seagate HDD and 3 GB of DDR2 RAM, clean Vista install boots and logs on it about 1.5 minute, whereas updates make it slower and increase boot time to 2 minutes. Also @Dixel, I notice that you have a WD HDD and Vista is fast and that you said that Vista prefers WD and HGST over Seagate. I can clearly see that......

  33. That's what I was talking about , as you can see , not only games are affected . I had started to notice such things when the first line of i3/i5/i7 arrived . Some of my progs just started to throw errors or won't launch at all. It was 10 or 11 years ago , I'm not sure I'll remeber which programs exactly , but debuggers and stuff like that don't usually like i3/i5/i7. I just bought a Pentium , problem solved . But nowadays Pentiums are stuffed with something that makes then behave like i3/i5/i7. Also some similar problems arose for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooking . You may want to try this bug on a plain and simple Haswell Pentium. But what about 32-bit Vista which loads perfectly fine ? It doesn't use this "timer " too ?

  36. What differences (if any) are there in IPCONFIG /ALL run with DHCP on and with static address? Run with the DHCP on, run IPCONFIG /ALL>C:\dhcp_ipconfig.txt. Set the static IP, net mask and gateway the same manually and run again IPCONFIG /ALL>C:\static_ipconfig.txt. Does the behaviour remains the same? I.e. is the behaviour independent from a same IP address assigned to the machine? The behaviour you decribe seems like connected to the gateway, so Dylan Cruz may be right, but he doesn't specify where to uncheck that setting (that BTW I doubt is called exactly as he stated). Could it be the case of some port forwarding? i.e. what do you get if you run: netsh interface portproxy show all ? Anyway, unless you have particular settings, a: netsh interface portproxy reset should do no harm. jaclaz

  37. I hate when people use that responsive web design with some heavy java script on their websites..

  38. Yeah, but it's unofficial support, because "most people don't even know what vista is"

  39. Welcome to MSFN, Tony! I wish it were under better circumstances, but we're glad to see you here. Thank you for the picture of your dad.. I know I probably speak for several others here as well when I say I wish I had known more about Rudy and been able to get to know him better personally. I exchanged many, many emails with him, and always enjoyed hearing about whatever he was experimenting with at the time. We once discussed meeting up if I were ever in New York, but unfortunately I never got the opportunity... One never knows the future, but if I had had any idea he would be gone so soon I would have MADE the opportunity. I haven't been able to work much lately on the page that I was making that is dedicated to Rudy's work, but I will add this picture to it, and I would be glad to add any other such things as might be interesting.. I thought about making a short biography type page, but it's hard to know where to begin, and it's depressing to realize just how few details you know about someone else's life and interests outside of whatever subjects you've discussed, even when you considered them a close friend...

  40. Thank you for the kind words about my father. Rudy has two sons. Jason loew is his blood son and we have the same mothers and I am Tony Sotomayor. Rudy was my step dad. I miss him so much. And Im glad to see how he impressed his fellow programmers on this thread and how much they respect his work. I knew as a child Rudy was very intelligent and a gifted programmer. If anyone would like to download a picture of Rudy when he was in his last year in College at University of Oklahoma 1970(Sooner 1970). I have a pic of him that was taken of him at the Engineers Club Engineers week party pic. Maybe someone can put it on this thread or something? He was young fresh leaving college and healthy. Picture is how I like to remember him. You can email me direct for that pic or anything else you want to know about my dad at jasongeo2@aol.com

  41. - I wan to add that cent 3.9.2.45 supports netflix web, spotify web and discord web. Netflix needs Widevine Content Decryption Module activated and updated, you can do this typing chrome://components/ and then on Widevine Content Decryption press check for updates and thats all! isnt the case of chromium 72 offered on the video of winclient. im slowly returning to vista again, i just need to league of legends to work and i will wipe my win 10 partition

  42. With that it would be possible to use newer AMD and nVidia GPUs, which would be a dream come true Do keep on posting updates, this is an extremely interesting project.

  43. Wow! Am I dreaming?! Vista Extended Kernel is a reality?! Thank you, @win32 for putting work into this project and bringing it to fruition, and creating this tutorial. This is something that has been discussed & yearned for among those of us "old-timers" in the Vista community as early back as 2013/2014, and the closest thing we ever got was @smeezekitty's proxy stub DLL wrappers for Adobe Reader DC & Catalyst Omega, but unfortunately he has been inactive since 2016 I never thought anyone would ever come forward with a full-blown extended kernel project. This is very exciting & promising as I had planned to stick with Windows Vista indefinitely, but worried for the future as software support (namely browsers) has continued to diminish. I'm not much experienced with any kind of coding, but if I can be of help in any way, do let me know. I apologize to everyone here in the Vista community for being so inactive lately. Being an "essential" employee (letter carrier for USPS) during a pandemic is not easy! Package volume is through the roof since no one (understandably) wants to get out Hope everyone here is staying safe.
