Try disabling system restore, I've heard Windows ME runs faster without it.

Is MSFN.org now practically unusable for win-98/Opera 12?
FantasyAcquiesce replied to Nomen's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Thank you so much! I'll test these two tomorrow morning. So in theory, someone can create a newer web browser for Windows 9x. It would just require building off from either building off the Arora Browser or the Qt Demo Browser using Qt 4.4 (and reprogramming newer versions by self). I have no idea how much more limited/difficult Qt 4.4 would be compared to the current version 5 when implanting/backporting code. My stupid head still can't figure out how to use Qt. (Still need to get my head wrapped around if anything else is needed besides a compiler) I'm going to test this on my 98SE installation tomorrow. EDIT: I can confirm both work natively on Windows 98SE But a LOT of work would be required in order to make it up-to-date. Opera 12.02 has a score of 292 and scored 100% on the acid3 test >_< -

Yea, it's outdated now but can't it be upgraded? It is open source after all. If I can just figure out how to backport features from newer webkit web browsers such as Qupzilla into arora then Windows 9x users can finally use the internet without hassle. Needed features would require HTML5 support, Flash?, Protocols, maybe spoofing to avoid being blocked, and others things I probably don't know of. -

If anyone has the time, I believe this is the build of arora that works on Win98 https://github.com/Arora/arora/tree/0.4.0 I can't figure out how to it as a web browser...do I need to do something with a compiler in order to make an executable file? -
Is MSFN.org now practically unusable for win-98/Opera 12?
FantasyAcquiesce replied to Nomen's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Back in 2009, someone did build a webkit-based browser onto Windows 98 http://arorabrowser.blogspot.com/2009/01/modern-webkit-browser-on-windows-98.html A very old versiom of google chrome was usable on Windows ME with the use of KernelEx and blackwingcat's old chrome tool. Another way apparently was fully updating Windows 98/ME and putting XP dll's in the system. While it's outdated now, couldn't someone backport later versions of Arora and qt5-based software onto 9x? If I'm correct it would require using Qt 4.4.3 and a Win98 compatible program compiler such as TDM-GCC 5.1.0-3. I've never coded before, so I'm not sure of this. -

List of Working Coding Software in Windows 9x
FantasyAcquiesce replied to FantasyAcquiesce's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Oh boy, months and still no progress I've done... Might as well list programs which can write and compile 9x compatible code. -
I've tried installing x64 on my R60 a while back with I used an offline driverpack to have no luck.. 32-bit drivers just don't like 64-bit OSes I couldn't be bothered looking for drivers so I quit at the time. Here's the video driver for the 945GM chipset Driver for an intel wireless card Searching the internet, SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio has no 64-bit driver.

KernelEx 2022 (Kex22) Test Versions (4.22.26.2)
FantasyAcquiesce replied to jumper's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Installed the kernel extensions on my fresh 98 install: Firefox 3.6.28 crashes on boot Slimboat Portable ALMOST works (out of the box) now. Upon boot it still crashes, but a glitched window now appears. Palemoon XP gives a can't find XPCOM error instead of device not functioning. (Probably a good sign of progression) Opera 12.5 is closer to working, but still doesn't work -
List of Working Coding Software in Windows 9x

Currently reading through some C++ book to learn about it. Luckily a relative had visual studio 2005 Applied legacyextender to comply 9x compatibility -
Yea, I think Qt 5 is incompatible with Vanilla Windows 2000. The last versions of Qupzilla and Dooble browser to work on W2k were Qt4-based both are now Qt 5.
-
For Vanilla NT 4 (If you ever need to browse the internet on NT 4 for any reason) The most suitable modern web browser for a Vanilla NT 4 is QTWeb 3.8.4 Here's something to resolve programs which won't display errors despite not working, ImportPatcher.41

List of software I would recommend -Google Chrome 13 or earlier, maybe experiment with BWC's older Chrome tool. Apparently this once even worked on 9x w/ KernelEx, sadly it's unknown which version allowed Google Chrome to run and which version. -Dooble Browser 1.4.0 (Last version working with w2k, Qt4 based) -Qupzilla 1.6.6 or earlier (Qt4)

Backporting latest Nvdia And AMD driver to XP
FantasyAcquiesce replied to Dibya's topic in Windows XP
Dibya, is there anything I can do to help? :3 (If only I knew how to code T_T) I'm just plain guessing here, but in theory isn't it possible to backport a driver by converting certain coding using an older program software which only leaves dependencies for older OSes? -
Browsers requiring Dibya's ExtendedXP to (sort of) Work with WinXP
FantasyAcquiesce replied to Dibya's topic in Windows XP
Dude, could you lay off? I'm [and a bunch of people are] perfectly fine with him posting browsers that work with the extended kernel and others may need one day. Windows XP is only becoming more and more obsolete as the years pass and eventually could end up being a hassle to browse modern websites like 9x and 2000. And Dibya, don't listen to those who are discouraging you! Your kernel extension is one-of-a-kind and will be a lifesaver in the future! -
Can't believe how mainstream people believe older operating systems are more vulnerable than the ones now xD Even the latest viruses often won't work on a fresh SP3 install because the developer is too lazy to make it XP compatible! A single missing dependency negates the "hard work" of these developers I'll never forget the day launching 50+ viruses on W2K, without a single one working :3

Here you go https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=47505 I made a topic here on MSFN, but it was locked...and I updated the download.

What a pathetic excuse of an OS... Is a lightweight operating system that will run with somewhat older machines too much to ask for?

Dell Precision M70 with Win98. Possible?
FantasyAcquiesce replied to Asomodai's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Sorry, I honestly don't know how the card exactly works...on the vogons.org forum I searched for help and assisted a few to install 9x on a D600. One of the members brought up he "broke down and paid for the patch" then mentioned the fix for the boot failure. How to enable ACPI after installation -
Unoffical SP3 not properly finishing installations
FantasyAcquiesce replied to CaelThunderwing's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I've been having issues with PROBL3MCHYLD's SP3 as well...instead, I would recommend using auto patcher for updating Windows 98. http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Auto-patcher-for-Windows-98SE.shtml -
Dell Precision M70 with Win98. Possible?
FantasyAcquiesce replied to Asomodai's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I know of one solution, but it requires rloew's ram limitation patch..."run the command line option with "/M" with the patch as the Network card takes up the first 16mb of ram which causes boot failures." This card isn't the best for use on 9x due to being meant for W2K and later, but its probably the only option for WPA2 (If you use odyssey client) Make sure to enable ACPI once everything is setup if you want Win98 to display a battery meter
