Isn't there a way to spoof the browser into fooling the webpage thinking the browser is a phone? I don't like the thought of viewing web pages using the mobile version but it maybe the only choice now.

Have you tried downloading larger files ~100mb? The wireless seems to time out after a while.

PROBLEMCHYLD, please reply when you get the chance. When using your broadcom driver to download anything on Windows 9x the card often times out or breaks while downloading, thus making larger file uploads/downloads impossible.

So...has anyone found a good pdf reader? I found Filezilla's Free PDF Reader, but it costs money to view the whole pdfs T_T I wanna read my bible!

Malwarebytes still works on XP. Although it's super bloated; my T7200 laptop lost a lot of CPU and ram using it! As antiviruses become harder to obtain on XP, luckily it's the same with malware. That's my favorite part of Windows 9x :3 Once I tried installing shady offers on my XP installation, the malware wouldn't even launch because I was missing updates!

I'm sure people have their reasons NT only software (not that I know of any)? Maybe their hardware is extremely old and W2K is a bit too much. Maybe the drivers fundamentally written for NT 4.0 may not work on W2K.

I found a media player that apparently still supports Windows 9x http://www.vuplayer.com/vuplayer.php It claims to support mp3. Someone needs to create a new topic for concurrent Windows 9x software or change the thread OP. The thread's creator isn't actively updating the first page, so there's plenty of software out that is not listed. Also, does anyone know of a player that still supports 9x or a mp3 codec? I swear, Windows 9x has so much abandonware that the developers have completely abandoned due to closing down such as Multimedia Calculus.

Technically no, they do install and work on 98SE, BUT the system is mysteriously unstable because of the broadcom driver. Oddly my Windows 98SE installations are always more unstable than ME. Usually my Win98 installations would work fine at first but then failed to do simple tasks. My wireless mouse even lagged! My last two Win98 installations over the past month never acted normal and was about as fragile as a pansy. It was odd Windows ME fixed everything and it was much more convenient on newer hardware because of the native USB support. Unlike 98SE, ME wouldn't bother me for cab files when installing drivers. A fresh ME installation was far superior to a Win98SE + Service Pack installation.

I can confirm Windows ME is WAY better with "newer" (2004) hardware than 98SE xD A short list of problems I encountered only in 98SE that ME did easily Missing cab and dll files that prevented the installation of drivers (having the 98SE did not resolve these issues) Modded wireless broadcom driver caused the 98SE system to slow worse than a turtle with USB speeds of a slug System hangs with a simplest of tasks such as opening an explorer window (caused by driver) USB support had to be implanted via CD drive while ME had the USB ready-to-go The missing real-mode DOS can be brought back as well! But using DOSbox might be a better choice. When I used the realtime DOS, software did not have sound on my newer hardware!

The Broadcom Wireless Card is definitely the issue here as it's been reported by many to cause isues. Once I installed the wireless card, Retrozilla's scrolling was very jagged and unsmooth (although I wasn't able to see it prior). Do you guys know if it's possible to force modify IRQ resources? While I know it's probably not the issue, I just wanna check. Know of any wireless usb adapters that work on 9x? EDIT: I haven't had the issues on ME that burden 98SE. In fact my ME installation has been a billion times more stable than 98SE + all updates. Microsoft probably tried implanting W2K API into 98SE, thus ME was born (probably why the wireless card driver works properly on ME but not 98). Found on the web ME actually supports ACPI, so that's nice. Can't find any logical explanation to why 98SE is as slow as a turtle, about to go back into it's shell at any second while ME is lighting fast. And thank you cov3rt for the ram tip! Windows ME is lightnin' fast while Windows 98SE is the new troubled windows!

A few reasons why people hated on Windows ME The operating system was more bloated compared to Windows 98 and manufacturers forced the operating system onto cruddy, outdated hardware as they did with Vista. The main reasons Windows ME was slow because of system restore would take up cpu and ram. Windows ME lacks real time DOS, however you can edit the operating system to make real mode dos available again. Windows ME literally had no new features (at least above the hood). According to rloew, Windows ME does have a few API's unavailable in Windows 98 but it just appears ME never caught on enough for developers to take advantage of the new API. This may explain why Windows 98SE with KernelEx can't use a newer version of flash player ME w/ KernelEx was capable of (I believe it was 10, 11, or 12) Really, it seems people's experience with ME is hit and miss. Some people say ME was the most unstable thing ever, others said it fixed unstable 95/98 installations upon upgrading. Apparently Windows ME was bad on a certain brand (forget it at the moment). Because of the forcing of Windows ME onto bad hardware, developers were not devoted to driver development so they mixed VxD and WDM drivers. These two separate types of drivers were meant for two separate kernels, the NT and DOS kernels. Mixing the two causes conflict with each other, creating instability. So, if your Windows ME driver developers didn't practice mixing the two, the installation would probably be stable. Windows ME is no different from most operating systems (aside from 10). As long as system was tweaked properly, it was as good as any other OS.

Thank you! I will try this when I get the chance! I installed Windows 98 without ACPI at first, then enabled it. Does that make any difference? I do have a few compatibility mode issues: Generic Cardbus and Floppy Disk. Never knew the Thinkpad T40 video drivers were compatible with the 32mb raedon 9000 card!

The title says it all, I'm trying to figure out why my Windows 98 installation on my Dell Latitude D600 always acts so unstable. The CD rom will not work despite being recognized and changing the resources to avoid conflicts. Windows itself is extremely slow and "lags" just for simply clicking on a simple explorer window to display files. What could be causing the issues -Having 1gb of ram in the machine. Despite having 1gb of ram, my machine never failed to install Windows and drivers. -The combination of VxD and WDM drivers? I've read somewhere having these two different types of drivers on windows can cause instability and conflicts. Since Dell did not officially provide drivers for my laptop there could be a possibility the different driver manufacturers created a different types with no intention of being used in the hardware combination of a Dell Latitude D600. -The unofficially modded wireless broadcom driver by PROBL3MCH1LD (If that's how I spell his username). Another used has told me the card's taking up the first 32mb of ram can cause boot failure, although it never happened to me. The user fixed his problem by using rloew's ram patch and typing a certain command. -Enabling ACPI? I've heard ACPI causes some issues on Windows 9x. I'm so confident this could be fixed >o<

Did you just use Qt 4.4.3 alone or use creator too? If so, what version of creator? I wanna see if I can find a compatible version of Qt creator for Windows 98. I've begun to take a programming class in Java and hope to take a crack at this. In theory, all I need is the interface functions, seperate protocols (because Windows 98's is outdated), and the actual functions right? I wanna start by obtaining Arora browser and fixing its certificate issue. Is there a certian folder you accessed Qt for an interface? I installed it a while back and still can't figure it out.

Windows 10 is absolutely terrible at home and school. Many of our computer systems previously had 7 and once Vista, maybe XP as well. It's okay on the notebooks provided in classrooms but it's absolutely dreadful in Digital Arts: at least a few BSoD on someone every time. If it ain't broke, don't fix it >_< It's kinda funny (yet scary) how everyone believes the latest stuff is the best. My AP Computer Science class is ignorant of missing API's when it comes to viruses attempting to run on older versions of windows.

I'm glad you found an alternative but we're trying to keep xp alive because quite often Windows software on Linux can be limited and newer versions of Windows are quite bloated. Just like you, we do not wish to spend tons on newer hardware. Dual-booting never hurts

Vista still has a long life ahead of it even without updates XP is still pretty alive in 2017 with a bunch of software still supporting it. Vista has a very similar code to 7, so occasionally programs designed for 7 or later may accidentally work on Vista, too bad that isn't the case for xp xD An example of a program working unintentionally was Qupzilla 1.66 on Windows 2000. A nice web browser that still supports Vista is Maxthon, Qupzilla?, Palemoon?, and Dooble.
