My bought obscure PC software from the mid-late 90's created by a company called "Pro One". So far their Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, and Grammar software works fine on my Windows Millennium installation but their Vocabulary software refuses to work. Oddly when the program first created a shortcut it claimed the program was unavailable. Turned out the program made an error directing itself to the F:/ drive (USB drive) instead of the E:/ drive (CD Rom). Upon fixing that part, the program gives me an overflow error. Got any ideas?

Please share this! I'm sure everybody would love this! I'm 1000% confident implanting W2K API and later is doable on 9x; Microsoft previously implanted unicode for 9x, third parties developed NTFS for 9x, ram patches for +512mb, implanting WPA2, people of this community creating wrappers for 7-Zip, SumatraPDF, rloew creating a slipstream-able 9x program, and the KernelEx project! While we could in theory backport anything onto 9x the problem is who's willing to put the time and effort into it? Or better yet has the proper skills to do so? Not many know how 9x works under the hood besides rloew. Might as well list all your ideas of backporting a modern browser somewhere, maybe someone can try them ^_^ We also need a good list of programming software on 9x along with driver development programs. Maybe while I'm at it, I could create an updated list of working software on 9x.

Which version? Can I have them? The easiest way I know in theory to backport a web browser is obtaining QT 4.3.3 (last Win98 tested version) and MingGW (I have both linked if anyone ever needs those) then modifying an older version of Arora browser, QT Demo Browser, maybe even Qupzilla or QTWeb (although I couldn't figure out how to open it in QT after downloading version 1.0.0's source code). Using one of the previous mentioned browsers is probably the easiest way to obtain a Webkit browser. Making a modern web browser for 98/ME (I have no idea if it would even work on 95 or if there is even a way) would probably require backporting newer versions of QTWebkit. SSE2 isn't a problem with me because my laptop is barely new enough to include it (LOL). But the biggest problem would be protocols and certificates preventing pages from even entering. I myself can't do this task because I can't even figure out how to open Qupzilla 1.0.0 in QT 4.3.3 >o< (Apparently there's no UI designer file!) and my little knowledge of Java probably wouldn't help much...

I'm hoping to stay on Vanilla ME because kernelex probably contributed to the dozens of botched 98SE installs on my D600 which led to me either reinstalling or finding another OS. Surprisingly ACPI fixes a bunch of issues I encountered on 9x such as keeping a usb plugged in during boot causing hangs and yes, ACPI does give a battery meter however it's not sufficient to keep me vigilant of battery life (Dell Latitude D600's don't have a super long battery life). Thanks for the tips! I'm gonna try a few of these!

Topic is not about upgrading, it's about finding utilities for 9x!

My system is a Dell Latitude D600- even slow on an XP installation. My only other viable option is W2k (without bwc's kernelex).

I'm somewhat confident there's a web browser out there with Win98 compatibility. Has anyone tried searching the internet in other languages such as Chinese? A while back internet explorer 6 was China's top browser. I was desperate enough to install the shady 360 browser, but that failed. There's countless browsers that are not well known such as blackhawk (although it's a rebrand of chrome).

Does anyone know where I could find... A third party battery meter - something similar to this. The program does not properly work on ME after changing a setting. Screen brightness adjuster and maybe color as well - Windows ME lacks one A decent office utility (besides Openoffice, something more modern) Modern PDF reader Third party screensavers - Just for fun; I wanna show to my peers that Windows ME is never truly obsolete Thank you!

Isn't there a way to spoof the browser into fooling the webpage thinking the browser is a phone? I don't like the thought of viewing web pages using the mobile version but it maybe the only choice now. -

Have you tried downloading larger files ~100mb? The wireless seems to time out after a while. -
Windows 98SE acting up on laptop?

PROBLEMCHYLD, please reply when you get the chance. When using your broadcom driver to download anything on Windows 9x the card often times out or breaks while downloading, thus making larger file uploads/downloads impossible. -

Can you link me to MinGW 3.2.0? I can't seem to find an older version. -
I apparently found a download to version 1.03 of Sysinternals' NTFS Driver for Windows 98! http://loadion.com/en/NTFS-for-Windows-98-1.03_69715.html Found version 2.0, BUT it's in Spanish... https://ntfs-for-windows-98.softonic.com/descargar Random video I found claiming to have NTFS for Windows 98 (It's in Japanese and requires a niconico account to view) http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm26911273

Malwarebytes still works on XP. Although it's super bloated; my T7200 laptop lost a lot of CPU and ram using it! As antiviruses become harder to obtain on XP, luckily it's the same with malware. That's my favorite part of Windows 9x :3 Once I tried installing shady offers on my XP installation, the malware wouldn't even launch because I was missing updates!

I'm sure people have their reasons NT only software (not that I know of any)? Maybe their hardware is extremely old and W2K is a bit too much. Maybe the drivers fundamentally written for NT 4.0 may not work on W2K.

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
FantasyAcquiesce replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I found a media player that apparently still supports Windows 9x http://www.vuplayer.com/vuplayer.php It claims to support mp3. Someone needs to create a new topic for concurrent Windows 9x software or change the thread OP. The thread's creator isn't actively updating the first page, so there's plenty of software out that is not listed. Also, does anyone know of a player that still supports 9x or a mp3 codec? I swear, Windows 9x has so much abandonware that the developers have completely abandoned due to closing down such as Multimedia Calculus. -
Then what are you waiting for!? Get QTWeb!

Windows 98SE acting up on laptop?
FantasyAcquiesce replied to FantasyAcquiesce's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Technically no, they do install and work on 98SE, BUT the system is mysteriously unstable because of the broadcom driver. Oddly my Windows 98SE installations are always more unstable than ME. Usually my Win98 installations would work fine at first but then failed to do simple tasks. My wireless mouse even lagged! My last two Win98 installations over the past month never acted normal and was about as fragile as a pansy. It was odd Windows ME fixed everything and it was much more convenient on newer hardware because of the native USB support. Unlike 98SE, ME wouldn't bother me for cab files when installing drivers. A fresh ME installation was far superior to a Win98SE + Service Pack installation. -
I can confirm Windows ME is WAY better with "newer" (2004) hardware than 98SE xD A short list of problems I encountered only in 98SE that ME did easily Missing cab and dll files that prevented the installation of drivers (having the 98SE did not resolve these issues) Modded wireless broadcom driver caused the 98SE system to slow worse than a turtle with USB speeds of a slug System hangs with a simplest of tasks such as opening an explorer window (caused by driver) USB support had to be implanted via CD drive while ME had the USB ready-to-go The missing real-mode DOS can be brought back as well! But using DOSbox might be a better choice. When I used the realtime DOS, software did not have sound on my newer hardware!

Windows 98SE acting up on laptop?
FantasyAcquiesce replied to FantasyAcquiesce's topic in Windows 9x/ME
The Broadcom Wireless Card is definitely the issue here as it's been reported by many to cause isues. Once I installed the wireless card, Retrozilla's scrolling was very jagged and unsmooth (although I wasn't able to see it prior). Do you guys know if it's possible to force modify IRQ resources? While I know it's probably not the issue, I just wanna check. Know of any wireless usb adapters that work on 9x? EDIT: I haven't had the issues on ME that burden 98SE. In fact my ME installation has been a billion times more stable than 98SE + all updates. Microsoft probably tried implanting W2K API into 98SE, thus ME was born (probably why the wireless card driver works properly on ME but not 98). Found on the web ME actually supports ACPI, so that's nice. Can't find any logical explanation to why 98SE is as slow as a turtle, about to go back into it's shell at any second while ME is lighting fast. And thank you cov3rt for the ram tip! Windows ME is lightnin' fast while Windows 98SE is the new troubled windows! -
