1. I've been asking on another site and got the steps! I just need to figure out step 3: How do you install these drivers on DOS? If anyone in the community knows the answer please say so! I'm very new to DOS!!! EDIT: The author of those steps told me about DOS being required in order to make the CD drive work, I had to install CD drivers in DOS then install Windows 98SE. I'm having trouble with this step as the laptop lacks a floppy drive and only contains a cardbus slot
2. The DVD Drive is my only remaining problem besides my cardbus (Wireless Laptop Notebook Adapter) the model is Linksys Wireless-G WPC54G. After installing the utility software (Had to transfer it by flash drive since my DVD drive wouldn't work in WinME) I'm getting issues during bootup about the cardbus and cardbus bridge driver. I'm receiving a "The file 'carddrv.exe' was not found" error, I played around a bit and used the carddrv.exe file found in WinME's C:/Windows/System, but that only made me realize its the default, generic driver which doesn't work. I tried ripping the files from my installation disc for the cardbus, but telling Windows to search in there doesn't help either. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to keep the Cardbus plugged into the slot during bootup, the manual seems to tell me to (D:) and its the only way the cardbus obtains power and LEDs turn on. There's still an issue, my cardbus is preventing Windows from properly booting if kept in before boot or inserted during boot. The laptop will hang if I insert midway boot and if I insert it before booting, the Windows ME screen will load, but afterwards the screen will become completely black, with a movable cursor. (I apologize if my grammar/spelling is really terrible, its late where I am atm) I tried Windows 98 again, that DVD drive oddly refuses to work with Windows 98 or ME...It works completely fine up until the operating system loads... Would an external DVD player be a good idea?
3. My OS has no DVD driver oddly, I'm either unsure which item on the list of "add hardware" is for DVD's or if there is no option at all EDIT (In case anyone is scrolling through this topic): The issue was conflicting resources
4. I'm sorry for being so stupid x_x You're saying format an external hard drive to FAT32, transfer the Unofficial Win98 Service Pack into the external hard drive THEN transfer it via dos?
5. Does this require creating your own iso??? Installing a file to the hard drive is completely new to me EDIT: Thanks for replying!
6. I'm still having issues with the DVD RW drive, Windows 98 and ME won't recognize it. This won't allow me to install my drivers for my Cardbus sadly... The most important part of audio and video are solved, sadly the official video drivers won't work so I used the unofficial one... Has anyone tried these drivers in a physical machine?
7. Please post a tutorial if possible! This sounds very useful for anyone that attempts this in the future!
8. Thank you so much! O(≧∇≦)O I never would have figured out the motherboard model was so important!!! (○□○) I underestimated the usefulness of the internet archive too! (((( ;°Д°))))
9. All the drivers posted here were located through extensive google searching and vogons.org user JiaoTongNan, MSFN.org users PROBLYMCH3LD, stupendousyappi, Dell user Griz UK, Dell does not support Windows 98SE or Windows Me on this laptop model. DISCLAIMER: Both Windows 98SE and ME have been tested with and work with these drivers. If you encounter missing CD drivers when installing 98SE, you'll have to devise a way to get the motherboard driver into the hard drive so 98SE can install it and get the CD drive working, be it editing the hard drive externally or installing an inappropriate CD driver. Most of the drivers make no mention of Windows 95 or Windows 98FE, I have no idea if those will work. Dell has offered the Dell Latitude D600 with a few variations, some models of the Dell Latitude D600 may come with a Intel Pro 2200 Wireless Card instead of a TrueMobile 1300 or 1400, which is incompatible with Windows 9x. Many drivers and instructions here apply to other Dell Latitude Dxxx family models, like the D610, but Windows 9x will only work properly with the D610 models that contain an ATI X300 graphics card as there is no Windows 9x video driver for Intel GMA 900. Scroll to the very bottom to check compatibility if you're considering installing 9x on a Latitude Dxxx model. (nusb33e) VDMSound 9x (May not work, included because the sound drivers don't natively support DOS) Windows 98SE Unofficial Service Pack (U98SESP3) Not included Modem Wireless Utility (Required for WPA2): download.juniper.net/software/aaa_802/public/oac/452/OdysseyClient9x.exe https://www.juniper.net/generate_license/ (Generate a trial key!) http://www.juniper.net/support/pulse.html (Maybe important to know if you plan on buying it) INSTRUCTIONS: Included with the .zip file. I left the names of the drivers unedited so they are more recognizable. Out of all the drivers, the broadcom wireless was the hardest to find. Thanks to PROBLYMCH3LD, we now have a driver and a wireless client program for it! Contents of instructions.txt Dell Latitude D600 Windows 9x Instructions: Read first: If Windows 98SE ever pesters you with messages that a cab file cannot be found, go to C:/Win98 and you will most likely find the cab files needed. Getting the Windows to restart into DOS (Modifying the resources for your hard drive and cd/dvd drive to properly work causes this!): Defining Custom Config.sys and Autoexec.bat Files To define custom Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files to be processed when you restart your computer using the "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode" option, follow these steps: If you have not restarted the computer in MS-DOS mode before, click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart The Computer In MS-DOS Mode, and then click Yes. At the command prompt that appears, type exit and then press ENTER. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer. Locate the "Exit to DOS.pif" file in the Windows folder, use the right mouse button to click the file, and then click Properties on the menu that appears. Click the Program tab, and then click Advanced. Click Specify A New MS-DOS Configuration, define the custom Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files in the CONFIG.SYS For MS-DOS Mode and AUTOEXEC.BAT For MS-DOS Mode boxes, and then click OK. You don't have to write anything different in the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files (unless you know what you are doing to make changes in DOS files), just exit out and reboot. After, if you go to Restart in MS-DOS, it will reboot the system totally, then state "Windows 98 is now starting your MS-DOS_based program". Then you will see the usual Microsoft Windows 98 copyright and the C:\WINDOWS> prompt. If you type "exit" to exit out, it will again reboot the system from the beginning and say "Windows 98 is now restarting...". If you type "win" to exit out, then it will state "You are currently running in MS_DOS mode. Do you want to return to normal mode, to run Windows applications again [Enter=Y. Esc=No]?" Hitting Y will reboot the system again from the beginning and say "Windows 98 is now restarting...". Intel 855PM: Run infinst_autol.exe or infinst_enu.exe. to fix ide channel driver, go to device manager, ide channel properties, resources, uncheck automatic settings, entry in the bottom of the list, edit, go up in addresses until one with no conflicts is found (e.g. 00EF - 00FF). Restart. IDE channel should appear as generic, but it will work fine. INSTALL THIS FIRST OTHERWISE THE AUDIO WON'T INSTALL PROPERLY! ATi Radeon 9000: Install DirectX 9, unpack "ts1 vid8 radeon9000", first install display driver using device manager. Go to display properties, update driver, specify location, choose driver from list, have disk, find inf in unpacked folder. Run Control Panel setup.exe to finish. Make sure DirectX 9 is installed first otherwise it the driver won't work. Alternatively you can install these modded video drivers if the original ones don't work, I personally recommend them over the official one. Resource Conflict Fix/Making 9x recognize the cd/dvd drive: Go to the Windows Start Button>Settings>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Hard disk controllers>Intel(R) 82801DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller (May appear as Standard PCI Controller)>Resources>Uncheck Use automatic settings>Scroll Down the Resource Type list to the very bottom>Click Input/Output Range (The very bottom one)>Make the Value go up/down until it says No devices are conflicting. The computer will restart, after that switch the dark disk into dual channels (You may or may not need to repeat the resource fix again after that, reboot) Sigmatel C-Major: Chipset must be installed, install the unofficial service pack for all updates, run "sigmatel c-major.exe". You will be asked for cab files on next boot. Go to C:/Win98, that folder contains all the cab files you need. Broadcom Ethernet: unpack "bcm5787 9.81" or 10.24, install driver using device manager. Go to pci ethernet adapter properties, specify location, choose driver from list, have disk, find inf in unpacked folder. You will be asked for a cab file, go to C:/Win98 for the cab file. There isn't a client, but the ethernet controller will work silently. Broadcom Wireless: Unpack "broadcom mini pci win9x bcm49xx", use device manager to manually install driver like above. Then install "boingoinstaller" or odyssey client. WPA2 Utility: Windows 9x lacks its own wireless utility, leaving the user to depend on third party wireless utilities. Odyssey Client is the only known universal wireless utility that works on 98SE and ME. Install after installing the wireless card driver, setup and then connect! Alternatively a Cardbus with WPA2 support could be used after installing the cardbus drivers for the D600. Cardbus: Copy the entire zip file to your flash drive after downloading it DO NOT EXTRACT IT YET or the drivers will be corrupt! Once you copy and paste it to a folder, extract the file with 7-zip or any ZIP File program. Install! If pestered about cab files again, go to the unzipped cardbus folder (I would recommend leaving it inside the desktop or C: for convenience) then the win98 folder inside. If that doesn't work, just go to C:/Win98 Drivers not included: Modem JiaoTongNan, notsofossil
10. You're computer is way too new and will have serious issues with Windows 98. Windows 98 will not boot with over 1.5gb ram, doesn't support multiple cores, doesn't support SATA hard drives and requires something like IDE in bios (Some computers don't have this option), won't recognize hard drives over 130gb I think, not only that, most modern pc's and laptop's newer than ~2006/2007 won't have proper drivers if you manage to install it. Sadly, there's no way to properly run Windows 98SE on your pc besides using VMWare player (Could use pro version), VirtualBox, or Microsoft Virtual Pc 2007. Your computer is simply way too new to run Windows 98SE. This probably won't help you much, but there are generic display drivers such as VBEMP or DisplayDoctor (Which I believe isn't available to download anymore, so VBEMP would be your only option). You will need a universal flash drive driver and software to recognize NTFS drives for Windows 98 since the old OS only supports FAT32 at best. DL;DR (Too long; don't read) You're computer is way too new and lacks any proper drivers for Windows 98. Use a virtualization program unless you plan on buying a pc that properly supports Windows 98SE.
11. My experience with Windows 10 Cousin's ex laptop w/ an i5 (Don't remember much besides the fact its newer laptop, Q4 2015): Speedy and perfectly fine with an SSD! (So far after 6 months! Best record for Windows 10 properly working so far!) It was the only option besides Windows 8.1, my Windows 7 disk made an error on this one, I'm not sure if this is another false compatibility issue or something. Cousin's current laptop: It seems Windows 10 goes on and off, I can't really tell for sure since my cousin only spent one night at my house. Booting is slow and the speeds were slower than my 10 year old laptop. When it works, there's no problems, capable of running games fine without any crashes. Couldn't figure out why the laptop was so slow, little to no extra software was installed on the laptop. Desperately attempted to help my cousin by uninstalling any junky software that came with the machine and used processes. Seemed to help a little, but not too much of a difference. After waiting for a while the laptop works fine. HP Pavilion All-in-One - 23-q127c: Since December 25th, I've had to rollback Windows 10, twice thrice four times. One time the taskbar stopped responding, any shortcuts on the taskbar wouldn't work! Pressing the start menu button made no difference and didn't open, yet everything else worked. Another time, Windows 10 became horribly slow and somehow had a 100% disk with no tasks or extra processes open. Currently, everything works fine but the OS causes annoying slowness occasionally. Update: 4/13/16 I had to use system restore for the 3rd or 4th time now. I just remembered the very first time I had to use system restore was due to usb ports not working at all; sound would come if plugged in, but nothing worked. Don't understand Microsoft; even Windows ME can use USB just fine after months, Microsoft can't make technology over 16 years old work 4/14/16 Update, this piece of junk OS won't recognize my phone anymore via usb! I expect this from Windows XP, not you, Windows 10 even your hated, older brother, Vista can do this! (Hahaha...I found out this was my fault, not Windows 10 for once. Whoops my bad!) Dell Latitude e4310: Not officially supported on this laptop, but worked mostly fine. The only difference I saw was Java instability, resulting in crashing. Wasn't any improvement for me. Thinkpad R60: I installed Windows 10 on this laptop at some point. This OS is just bloat, even Windows 7 could run fine on my weak, 10 year old laptop. Opening the task bar would risk in freezing the laptop and loading took forever. With Windows XP, this laptop worked fine and could actually browse the internet. My Sister's samsung laptop: Laptop is a bit old, 5 years, came with an i5 (I'm aware that i5's from 5 years ago are weaker than current ones). Windows 10 basically ruined her laptop! It automatically updated Windows 7 to Windows 10. At first, it wasn't so bad, but performance of the laptop only declined. The trackpad wouldn't properly work and always freaked out if touched. The laptop became SUPER slow without installing software. After using the EOM disk and resetting to Windows 7, the laptop works good as new. What I dislike about Windows 10: Bloated, Windows XP used about 0% of my CPU on the R60, Windows 10 used 100%, Windows XP uses ~150mb ram, Windows 10 uses 1gb (I'm aware Vista and 7 similar amounts of ram, but c'mon! Even those two used less than 1gb on my "obsolete" laptop!) Buggy (Taskbar not working at all, Will make a USB sound but won't recognize anything, Annoying occasional freezing for simple tasks that isn't found in other Windows OSes) Looks like a downgrade compared to Windows Vista and even XP's icons look better than the metro theme Microsoft's false incompatibilities, I'm pretty sure even Windows Vista is just as capable of 7 to run Office 2013. Microsoft just rips off customers like usual. Bloated looking start menu Cortana (Bugs which cause many things to go wrong and Cortana can only be hidden) Microsoft should've kept Windows 10 in development longer. The only real benefit I can see from this OS is the appstore, but Windows 8.1 uses that too. Overall I give Windows 10 a 4/10, not an OS I would use, but works. Like usual, Microsoft pushes a incomplete, bloated product that won't be good until at least 2 years. Windows Vista was the same case as well, it wasn't stable at first according to many then improved when Service Pack 2 was finally released. For me, Vista works better than Windows 7 on my low end 2011 laptop, and its not even officially supported! I had to use Windows 7 drivers for Vista, Aero wouldn't work properly on 7, yet works on Vista!
12. What about Windows 98 Unofficial Service Pack? Doesn't that contain all the latest updates? (Only used the Windows ME Unofficial service pack which allowed an option for only official updates, so I maybe incorrect)
13. Title says it all, please mention any "High End" (For its time) Laptop models which support (Or drivers at least work) on Windows 98/ME! I'm a bit new to this, feel free to correct me anytime. Example: Dell Latitude D600 - Pentium M 745 @ 1.6 (Or 1.7?)GHz, 14.1', 1024x768 screen resolution, ATI Radeon 9000 Mobility Video Card (Unsure if this comes with the laptop since I've never owned one), and Sigmatel Audio
14. Hope a forum moderator or admin could update the list and include with kernel extension. I have a program to add; driverbooster Although it was never supported on Windows 2000, it works with the blackwingcat's kernel extension. Your lucky may vary though. It will heavily depend what year the drivers made for xp were or if they are blocked from the system. Many earlier xp drivers tend to work on W2KSP4
15. Studying for school like usual

16. For me firefox does install, but it just simply won't open due to an error. Your KDW tool tells me to input a password in 7-Zip, but I cannot find one on your site. Without a password, the files won't extract properly.
17. A little late, but thank you so much! Windows 2000 w/ the Kernel extension is fabulous! Although oddly, the rollup updates allowed the latest version of Firefox, the Kernel32 extension is causing an error so Firefox won't work. Could be because of the fact I used the chrome tool and installed the rollups. But, the latest version of qupzilla works as a trade off.
18. I'm not sure what's wrong with my pc, I'm trying to install Office 2007 from my 2007 Standard Disc and I cannot find any option for Microsoft Groove. Which expandable option contains groove? I keep getting an error occurred during installation
19. I am not Roll update creator but KDW and extended kernel(perhaps you say unofficial kernel32) creator. IE6SP1 Security Cumulative update in 2013 can download from my WLU site. If you want to use vanilla Win2000. You can use firefox 12 or 10 ESR or Qupzilla 1.6.6. If you use Extended kernel , you can install recent firefox and recent Qupzilla and Otter Browser and so on. Which part of your site contains the IE6SP1 Security Cumulative Update? I'm a bit overwhelmed by how much Japanese is on the page, and its kinda hard to find stuff.
20. I've reinstalled windows 2000 from SP4 alone and without any unofficial updates and it works perfectly now! <3 (Except for a wireless adapter which refused to be recognized, until I reinstalled it multiple times) I realized the issue is to NEVER install unofficial compatibility updates which modify the kernel after reading your site which said somewhere it may mess with the audio. I just realized, you are the creator of the unofficial Kernel32 updates, Rollup updates, Chrome tool and the KDW right? Kernel32 update refuses to work and says it requires Internet Explorer SP1 Security Cumulative update, despite already having SP4 w/ Internet Explorer 6SP1... 如果我学日本文 。。。(Typing this on Windows 2000!) Now I need to find a better web browser besides Opera and Firefox, both sometimes load a little wrong
21. I've installed every driver I could. Oddly, the modem driver refuses to install. I need a high definition audio bus it says. Lots of the drivers forced me to install unoffical updates and so... I know my sound card has no chance of being broken as well, audio worked fine in Windows XP, 7, and even 10. Windows 2000 is a nice, lightweight, minimal OS. But its a pain to setup >.<
22. Can you let me know how to do so? I've never done anything similar to that before...
23. My issue is that I've installed SP4, DirectX 9.0C, UAA High Definition Audio Bus Driver, and the installation still gives me the error "HDA Audio Bus Driver not found" and refuses to install SoundMAX. I tested multiple OSes on this Laptop to find Windows 10 will completely freeze up when opening the start menu due to old processor and 1gb of ramWindows 7 is extremely limited in ram, one window might be fine depending on the website. MS Word and so is very slow.Windows XP is nice at first, then becomes easily bloatedWindows 2000 so far seems like the best choice, since all software available is made years ago, none of them take up nearly as much ram or cpu usageMint Linux was very slow to boot, didn't really test it though. Wasn't compatible with lots of software.IXLE Linux was fine, only downside being its incompatible with lots of Windows software
24. When installing Windows 2000 on a Thinkpad R60 NEVER install unofficial updates until you are completely done installing the correct drivers! This will cause an audio issue, if you hadn't already installed the driver! You will receive the message "The HDA Audio bus driver is required and not found" My Specs: Intel Solo T1300 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000) Extra's I've installed on the laptop -SP5 -Unoffical updates which include compatibility launcher How to install (Work in progress! Your model is likely different than mine and will need different drivers if so)
