  3. Just an off-topic note, not relevant to XP, but I just updated my Firefox on Windows 10 to version 85, and all support for Flash has been removed, so it doesn't even recognise the plugin any more.

  5. I wanted to know what metric you were using. You could have meant cards manufactured by companies with a reputation for poor quality, for instance. If you meant "low end" as in cards of the 9xx line which aren't considered "high-end" or "enthusiast," though, doesn't that counteract saying the driver will work problem free with the 900 series? Check Wikipedia's article on the 900 series. There, the GTX 950 and 960 are listed as "mid-range," GTX 970 and 980 as "high-end," and GTX 980 Ti and TITAN X as "enthusiast." That's where I've been getting my metrics. Really? I thought I was being rather civil here. Are you sure you're not reading hostility into my words?

  7. I don’t know of any Norton users here anyway (I use Avast Free 18.8), but it sounds like definition updates for the XP/Vista version (final revision 22.15.5.40) will end February 28 according to a recent thread at Norton Forums. Edit: Norton changed its mind?? I don’t know of any ESET users here either, but their support article Do you run ESET on Windows Vista or Windows 7? indicates that SHA-2 support will be mandatory by April 15, 2021. That is bad news for Windows XP, but of course it is well known here that SHA-2 support can be installed on Vista - but does ESET know that? Earlier today I posted a question at ESET Forums, ESET 12.x on Vista after April 15, 2021? which has received a couple of answers. ESET has no free version, but might still be an option for vanilla Vista with SHA-2 support.

  8. That's a update to fix some issues with migration to SP1, Microsoft was too lazy to make it exclusive to 6.1.7600

  9. The latest I think it's 372.70 but I'm using 372.54 with a gtx 1060 3gb and got it from the manufacturers website (asus) Didn't have enough time to play a lot of games but in minecraft and euro truck simulator 2 there are no problems (I don't think these games use directx so that's why they work well) There are known issues with directx games in terms of performance Also what motherboard are you using?

  10. The tab between "Lab" and "Adfilter" is "Security and Privacy". It's actually fairly easy to fix. I fixed mine labeling it "Security" (screen cap below). The "how" kinda needs done by yourself on your end (I wouldn't want to violate any copyrights/trademarks by making changes for you and uploading). So I can walk you through "how" but I don't think I can upload - better safe than sorry. I use the "portable repack" so these instructions stem from that. Go to your "install-folder\Chrome\Application\version.0.build.0" folder. You will find an "options.zip" file in that folder - unzip using WINRAR (will not work using IZArc or 7-Zip, did not try others). Once unzipped, you will find an "options.html" file. Open "options.html" with Notepad++. There's over 3600 lines but you can page down and easily find all of the "Chinese" because they'll show up as a bunch of boxes (unless you have a Chinese font installed or allow fonts to install on their own, which I do not). When you find the "Chinese" 'boxes', simply highlight, copy, and paste into Google Translate. Then replace the "Chinese" 'boxes' with however you wish to reword the translation. Once you go through all 3600 lines (you only need to edit two dozen or so, don't remember offhand), save the file and rezip using WINRAR. Close 360, save the new "options.zip" back into the "install-folder\Chrome\Application\version.0.build.0" folder. Now when you open 360, you will see your translations instead of the Chinese remnants not translated by the Russian Repack guy. Really easy :)

  11. what i did was installed the latest version of windows update agent i also installed Sp1 with the update volume z suggested kb3138612.

  12. That is good to hear. So the answer to your original question, Has Windows Update For 7 Get Shut Down? is No - but you must have SP1. I first learned that from Volume Z actually. Can you confirm that you had not manually installed any update pertaining to SHA-2 before Windows Update started to work (just SP1)? I also wonder what version of Windows Update Agent you have now. You may want to follow Volume Z’s earlier suggestion about KB3138612.

  14. Oh, that explains a lot, then. It's not a matter of .inf modding, is it? Either way, it would be a better bet to follow the guide from Matt's Repository, since that opens up the newer drivers (up until nVidia discontinued XP/XP64 support) and provides more opportunities to find a driver that works best for our machines.

  15. The 980 TI, Titan, Quadro, and lower end cards are newer than the driver, so there's no way it could support them without driver modification

  18. If this is a new installation of Windows 7 RTM, then your very first step is to manually install KB976932 (a.k.a. Service Pack 1). The following Microsoft link might also prove helpful (although I doubt it): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/windows-update-sha-1-based-endpoints-discontinued-for-older-windows-devices-10b58bd9-5ba2-b23d-498b-139ce5c709af

  20. You gave the same advice earlier in this thread. Are you recommending Malwarebytes Free (with no real-time protection) or Premium (with real-time protection that does not perform very well in testing by independent labs)? Of course 3.5.1 supported vanilla Vista and is nearly 3 years old. Is there no hope of using current versions of Malwarebytes for Windows 7 and above with extended kernel? To his credit, winvispixp sought advice before selecting an antivirus to use with extended kernel, but unfortunately not much good advice was available. If I understood correctly, Kaspersky didn’t crash until after “latest kernel32 x86” was added in an effort to fix WMP, but perhaps winvispixp could clarify that.

  23. In addition to reinstalling Windows 98 SE with the /p i switch (there must be space between p and i), set the SATA mode to AHCI in BIOS. Then, after the installation is finished, install the AHCI driver from here using Device Manager (Update Driver): https://archive.org/details/ahci_win9x The device you'll be installing the driver for will be one of the "PCI Card" devices with yellow question mark. Just try each one (there might be many of these), until it is detected by the driver as an AHCI Controller. After the driver is installed and system has rebooted, hopefully you'll have full 32-bit disk access in the Performance tab in the System Control Panel. With the AHCI driver, you are bypassing ESDI_506.PDR entirely, saving a lot of headaches.

  24. Firewalls and internet traffic filters are really important on low-end hardware. You just can't afford to load the bloat! As I have a big home network of 4 computers here, my router does all the firewalling for all of them. It runs on OpenWRT (https://openwrt.org/), a special Linux, improving the functions of the router. Once the router is flashed and configured on a more modern machine (Windows XP and old Slackware are enough), it can be accessed via SSH or SCP through Windows 98. @Wunderbar98: Might I ask, what exactly you are filtering? What gets on your nerves? Attachment picture 1 shows the easy interface of WinSCP, which let's you connect to other devices on the network. Picture 2 shows the file transfer between the local drive and the connected device. Picture 3 shows the file dnsmasq.conf, which kills all web traffic listed there. Picture 4 shows the hardware, a semi-new TP-Link TD-W8970B. It's not perfect (installation required soldering some pins on the board), but I can recommend it as a daily internet gateway running OpenWRT.

  28. Ok.. I'm now going to steer away from that thread about "missing buttons", and since my question now pertains more regarding privacy/security vs workability/functionality - I suspect going forward, its going to be 'that' trade off. Yes, it is a tad unsettling that in this day and age, we do (in fact) have to give up some of our privacy (both online and in real life) to enjoy all the "latest and greatest" the world has to offer. Its a new trend moving further away from privacy, and I recon that one day, our privacy will be (almost) completely eroded away as the younger generation enjoys throwing their entire lives (personal business) out there without a care in the world in full view of anybody and everybody ~Apologize for the rant - I could go on-and-an~ Going over the prefs I had to remove last night to get MSFN functioning properly, I've been adding them back 'one-by-one' to see where the issues (or conflicts) begin, and the following 6 entries are what appears to be required (set to opposite of what was my previous configuration below in Firefox based browsers) to display everything correctly now here. user_pref("gfx.downloadable_fonts.disable_cache", true); user_pref("gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled", false); user_pref("gfx.downloadable_fonts.woff2.enabled", false); user_pref("gfx.font_rendering.cleartype.use_for_downloadable_fonts", false); user_pref("gfx.font_rendering.graphite.enabled", false); user_pref("gfx.font_rendering.opentype_svg.enabled", false);

  29. Wunderbar98 (December 10th): It's okay Santa pre-approved a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. Happy new year all. Christmas came and went and as usual there were no presents, just some lights. Can't remember what year my household purchased anything new aside from socks, underwear, food and rare home/vehicle maintenance items. Live a low profile, work from home, prefer staycations. Entire year only washed the truck once and burned two tanks of gas. Single vehicle household, would like to get rid of that too but suburbia requires driving for everything. The 20+ year old bread maker died last year, we've reverted to baking bread the old fashioned way. Also got serious about machine knitting house socks. As usual the neighbour's oversized garbage bin is overflowing long before garbage day, can't even close the lid. May skip taking the bin to the curb this week to set an example but they'll probably think i threw my garbage into their bin :( So needless to say no Raspberry Pi - happy! Configured the 11-year old SSE2 capable netbook to handle all banking needs with a modern non-Windows OS, re-routed some DSL wire and everything's good. Hopefully can keep this existing setup for 5-10 years. So no need for a Raspberry Pi or newer computer, which would have opened a big can of worms (another KVM switch, HDMI -> HDMI-mini and VGA -> HDMI adapters, etc). Keeping on with the old hardware. May spoil myself this year and upgrade the primary system to a faster tower presently in storage (800MHz/384MB RAM to 1.7GHz/1.5GB RAM). Reluctant as this Windows 98 setup is the best i've ever used. Will perform another full image backup of this Windows 98 install then just continue to enjoy the system. It's been fun, thank-you everyone for your input and feedback. Lately have been busy with other projects and probably won't post much anymore. Have been going through years of old online forum logins and memberships, attempting to either cancel or gibberish/harden the data, not an easy feat. They make it easy to sign up then keep your data for years. Also started tinkering with other non-Windows/Apple/ proprietary OS', gotta keep moving. Thread title updated to 'Running vanilla Windows 98 in 2020 and beyond...'. Feel free to post your modern day Windows 98 experiences here, or not. It's great that there are still some users out there. Personally i think Windows 2000 Professional was the best MSFT ever produced, though my nostalgia remains loyal to Windows 98. It is very versatile and still surprisingly useful today, despite occasional clunkiness, which adds to the charm.

  30. Again: 1) it is due to the original partitioning, the cloning is "innocent" 2) it can be (could have been) easily fixed I tried explaining the basics, if you had questions you could have asked them . Anyway: 1) the entry in the MBR is for the extents of the extended partition 2) normally the simplest way out would be to enlarge the extents of the extended partition (leaving the volume inside it as is) and later expand the volume 3) BUT in a dual-boot with XP and Windows 7 having a logical volume inside extended is not safe 4) hence it is advised to convert the logical volume to primary, since you don't need/want to ue any other MBR slot 5) this consists essentially in copying 16 bytes from the EMBR to the MBR, change the 4 byte Start LBA value adding the offset to the EMBR and (optionally) correct the "sectors before" in the PBR jaclaz

  31. Back in the day my better half and i were motorcycle safety instructors. Since childhood i've owned and ridden bikes from all the major Japanese brands and can't say one is any better than the other. Bikes owned in childhood were, for example, 50cc Honda minibike and XR100 Honda dirt bike. Motorcycles owned in adulthood include Kawasaki Ninja 600, Kawasaki Ninja 750, Suzuki GSXR 1100 and a Suzuki DR650. They were all very reliable. The DR650 was my favourite, dual purpose 'thumper' engine, but sitting upright wasn't more comfortable. At highway speeds, anything more than ~80 km/hr, the upright position and lack of windscreen made for an unpleasant and tiring ride. The sportbike allowed alternating between semi-upright and laying down on the tank but is harder on the wrists. So maybe depends on how much future highway riding vs slow, short trip city riding. I'm older now but aside from that i would not ride a motorcycle on the streets anymore. Where i live car drivers have gone crazy last 20 years, busier roads and lots more tailgating, speeding, hit and run accidents. Not worth losing your life or being permanently injured for a bit of fun - video games are safer :) The bikes you are looking at are relatively small displacement so your physical stature shouldn't be a big issue. If, however, you can't keep both feet flat on the ground while sitting on the bike stationary then look for something else. Dual purpose motorcycles typically have a taller seat height, primarily off-road suspension travel, so if you can't pass the sit/feet flat test don't bother. Also IMHO if you don't have the physical strength to pick up the bike if it's laying on the ground, you're over your head. Again only IMHO, not everyone has the aptitude to ride and many 'bikers' should stick with four wheels. This forum isn't the best place to ask for this advice. It's unclear how much riding experience you have. If you haven't already, take a motorcycle safety course that offers practical training before making a decision. Here most courses provide bikes for learning. Then you will know better if getting a motorcycle is still what you want.

  32. Very simple , you just need to choose the extensions which do not have locales . English only , and they will install. I assume you don't need any other languages , just like me :D . Also , if chrome starts howling about "wrong version" , you may unpack this extension with 7zip and force the installation in the >developer mode< from the unpacked folder. The developer switch is on the top of the page. Why do you need 4.6.2 ? It's buggy on Vista . I have had huge problems with it , despite what some others may say. If you want my advice , do not go higher than 4.5.2

  33. Well thats pretty simple: I agree on the fact that Office should have kept the 2010 Aero Design Scheme but Office 2010 is no longer a secure option and especially not for people who use Windows Vista as a daily driver (without Server 2008 ESUs). Some of the best Office 2013 benefits are: 1) In Word 2013 you can embed YouTube videos in your documents and play them directly. Various ODT and PDF files can now be converted (I personally need that feature for school/university) 2 ) In PowerPoint 2013, you can see your notes about the slides on your screen during the presentation, while the viewers only see the slides 3) While Office 2010 didn't have much to do with the cloud, OneDrive is now fully integrated into the office suite. Office documents can be saved quickly and easily in the cloud and further processed at any time from any location with an internet connection. 4) OneNote 2013/2016/W10 edition Notes are not compatible with OneNote 2010. I cannot see or edit my Notes written on my Tablet on Office 2010. Higher OneNote versions are not compatible with 2010.

  34. “SpeedTest App” is listed as ONG in the Last versions of software for (vanilla) Windows Vista thread under System Management, Cleanup, and Analysis.

  35. It really comes down to how the software uses the processor. Here's the Ark comparison: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/compare.html?productIds=83359,82765 The memory bandwidth and speed is better on the 1650, but the CPU cache is better on the 2640. The 2640 is also designed to be used in dual-proc boards, hence why it supports QPI and the other one does not (look at the Bus Speed numbers.) In a real world scenario, the program itself may have a determining factor for which of these two CPUs are the ideal choice, however it is also possible that the observable difference may be negligible.
