aahhh shoot! v5.131.2600.6459 of the crypt32.dll file is included in the KB2868626 (MS13-095) security update for XP which renders the KB968730 hotfix worthless (a bit late in realizing this, Dave). also reading this from MS technet forums: edit: a slightly older crypt32.dll file for XP is also included in the KB2808679 update (also makes KB968730 hotfix useless), which prevents internal URL port scanning (to me this feels like a security fix even though it isn't classified as such) - I have both KB2808679 & KB2868626 updates installed on a friend's old eMachines PC running XP MCE 2005 + SP3.3 points

I suspect that's because the free version of Malwarebytes does not offer realtime scanning, whereas the premium paid version does. The Windows XP Security Center probably only recognises realtime scanner programs as being AV programs.2 points

Yes, sadly so. I was asking XPerceniol if the catalogue was actually working for them, as they had said that it was "empty". I don't think they realised that the home page of the catalogue does look pretty empty until you actually search for something!2 points

Oh no! Bad news: There are SHA-1 troubles indeed! By accident, I only tested HTTPS sites that still work here, like "msfn.org" and my search engine "swisscows.com". However "startpage.com" and "duckduckgo.com" are broken, so are probably 60% of the HTTPS sites. This machine is an non-updated Windows XP SP2 with crypt32.dll of 2004, version 5.131.2600.2180. More investigation regarding that will follow... @Tripredacus Good, that you've written this! I wouldn't have given it another test!2 points

This is normal. Browser removal instructions: -Delete shortcuts(desktop and startmenu) -Delete browser folder in program files directory -If complete removal is desired, delete the folder in appdata (the name varies, but for new moon, for example, it would be Moonchild Productions) At some point perhaps I could try to make an uninstaller. Don't expect such a thing very soon, as time is rather scarce these days, sadly.2 points

Unfortunately, 4.6.0 having been the last version to officially support Server 2008 SP2, it seems unlikely that there will be any further .NET rollups for Server 2008 SP2 after April 2022. (Edit: ESU updates for .NET reportedly cannot be installed by non-customers anyway.)2 points

I told ya it was RAM . You need to remove all and test with only one module inserted. BTW , RAM testing tools are not good in my opinion. I had a funny case when the guy that was checking my faulty RAM at the store had 100% good test results and then he just couldn't boot into windows ! I also remember some similar case when my DDR2 RAM module no. 1 developed a faulty sector after a couple weeks of usage in a brand new PC . As for the second hand items , never use them in a PC where you do something important . People just do not know how to handle such items , just don't . Most never heard of static electricity and UPS.2 points

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/microsoft-to-use-sha-2-exclusively-starting-may-9-2021/ba-p/2261924 Microsoft startin May 9, 2021, will expire the SHA-1 Root Certificate Authority in Windows. Could this possibly kill XP? Most of the XP drivers are SHA-1 signed, as well as internal programs. Will XP "expire"?1 point

working Chromium v87 for windows xp (last official chrome is v49 for windows xp) it was tested more or less and dont seem to include a spyware or weird connections installer is in chinese III (N) is for Next II(B) for Browse (change folder) II(I) for Install (you only need those 3 for the installer) download links: http://designingonajuicycup.com/downloads/untested/ http://www.filedropper.com/minibrowsersetup1071 https://www.file-upload.net/download-14566263/MiniBrowserSetup_1071.exe.html https://easyupload.io/e3fdad https://transferxl.com/08M79dPPgqG1M https://file.io/wFhiH69x9vge https://filebin.net/jqbzrykgxjv8hl2r you can set any language options -> Settings -> Advanced -> Languages then click on "Language" then you should see "English (United States) in "Add languages" you can find your language v87 is newer then windows 7, 8.1, and windows 10 also it is newer then internet explorer 11 (IE11) that means that version of chromium is not to think away, then rather windows 8.1 , IE 11, (>WIN10 Redstone 5) would disapear even if all of that happens there still would be solutions to make that version of chromium work the market share is also speaking for chrome, chrome being the most used browser https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share1 point

Thank you; Dave, for confirming that - this has been a good learning lesson for me; I will say that much. I was surprised that I was even lacking those 6 updates (another story), as my system is posready, so I should be as up-to-date as can be ... but hopefully (together) we'll figure this out.1 point

The free version that I use does not register in XP's security center neither.1 point

Microsoft Catalog still works, but almost all updates described as "Security update for Windows XP" only have been removed from the list. You can find updates for drivers, dotnet, IE8, Windows Media, XP Embedded, POSReady, Windows Server 2003 and XP…1 point

I had this nagging feeling that there was more to the story of SHA-1 troubles than just not being able to use Windows Update anymore, but given how little I understand of how all this works, I didn't think my concerns would be taken seriously. This is part of why I had nagging concerns. Consider: how many developers go out of their way to support XP for any length of time once dev kits stop providing support by default? Most would just consider it not worth the trouble, I presume. Only in enthusiast circles would you actually see people taking care to make sure XP users can still run applications that might be affected. Also, there's that whole code signing aspect. This is all why I don't think it's a good idea to dismiss this as "paranoia mongering." It's why I actually spent time looking into this and seeing if XP ever did get SHA-2 support, and how to get it if so.1 point

MSI Afterburner displaying some stats via RTSS on a D3D11 game and a D3D8 game on Windows 8.1. RTSS settings were left at defaults. Windows 8.1 is at the December 2017 patch level + .NET Framework 4.8 (KB4486105). .NET likely doesn't matter in this case unless .NET based game is involved. More information would be needed to solve the OP's problem. Sometimes the module name where it crashed gives a hint, but it's not necessarily where the main issue resides. The crash log can be found in Event Viewer (Windows Logs->System) or in Action Center (Maintenance->View reliability history). The developers of RTSS would be the best equipped to diagnose the issue if they're provided with the crash dump. Crash dumping is enabled by creating a registry key described here and adding described settings. Default values are probably OK for the start, the person analyzing the dump should be able to tell if it should be configured differently to give better results. Obviously you can link it here and hope someone that comes by can make a sense out of it, but it's easiest for the person that has the source code of the crashing program since then Visual Studio will be able show where it crashed at the source level, variables will be identifiable by name etc.1 point

Okay, it's intersting, that using the old Netscape 9 (with the modern TLS fixes) behaves differently online than New Moon 28. They choose different encryption algorithms to visit HTTPS sites. All the sites that don't operate on the "next-week" XP with expired SHA-1 certificates can we accessed with Netscape (they don't look that good of course). My Windows 98 machine that uses Retrozilla and Netscape seems to be unaffected, too. Would someone be so kind and send me over the crypt32.dll from his Windows XP 32-bit system? I'd like to see, if a whole update can be avoided.1 point

yeah but you gotta consider XP 64 really is its own thing too. it didn't even get a SP31 point

This is really strange because I trust this experienced user @UCyborg . He just helped me with Riva Tuner on Vista . What is their framework level ?1 point

Would also be very good to find a standalone version installer (or portable) of Riva tuner without MSI. I know there's one inside , but I guess not everyone will figure that out. Is there a site with various older versions ? EDIT: Your version works with Vista , thank you lots ! If I don't bother you that much , perhaps you know how to switch OFF this stupid "cannot connect to update server". Of course I blocked it with the firewall , since I can't allow it to update (obviously). Switching off the update checker in the settings doesn't help . EDIT-2 : It really shows fps count only with *some* games , but no crashes like the OP described, so older versions are still needed. EDIT-3 : Quit showing FPS at all . If I look at the main window - it's just stuck at the highest monitor refresh rate. But in the games there is no FPS counter at all. EDIT-4 : Finally got this to work with Vista ! I had to frankenstein the hell outta the both versions . So nevermind , all is OK now. Thanks again for your help.1 point

I’m not a leading authority, but if your understanding was accurate, then scannow could obliterate any and all Windows updates - not just Server 2008 updates installed on Vista - unless your installation media was slipstreamed with all possible updates to begin with. When an update is installed, I believe backup copies of files are cached. There is no reason to be fearful of these updates. It’s not like Microsoft simply forgot to block installation on Vista: the updates contain extractable text documents that plainly list Vista under applicability info. Vista and Server 2008 SP2 are both Windows 6.0. (Beginning in April 2019, the build number changed from 6.0.6002 to 6003, which was a little scary - and in fact I stayed on 6002, but would not rule out “upgrading” if I decide that I must have SHA-2 support on Vista.)1 point

Actually, the very URL you referenced (SSL Labs Server Test) suggests that only TLS v1.2 is supported, period:1 point

I haven't checked myself @i430VX 's "installer" to ascertain whether it offers one the choice of setting Serpent 52 as the default OS browser, but in case one did so manually post "installation", Tools -> Preferences -> General -> Startup -> Serpent is not your default browser -> Make Default the Serpent shell integration must be reverted prior to "uninstallation"; e.g., if you want to set again FxESR 52 as your default OS browser, do so (from within Fx, preferably rebooting afterwards) before you start deleting Serpent-related directories/files... A registry clean-up post removal is also recommended (since no "proper" Serpent uninstaller exists that would take care of this...); this scenario, of course, is for when one simply "tried" Serpent and then wants to purge his/her system off it...1 point

I was quite shocked myself, actually. I (again) enabled DCOM Server Process Launcher (why its relies on that, I'm unsure) and ran the application and apparently somehow it 'detected' that I needed those 6 updates this morning (now, zero). However, it included some 64bit versions that (obviously) I do not require. It fetched the following: So you say wsusscn2.cab shouldn't work; I don't know?? For some reason, I didn't have the correct Windows Update Agent installed (now that brought me up to (wuauclt 7.4.7600.226 winmain_wtr_wsus3sp2(wmbla).090806-1834), so I just did that and enabled everything on my system (which I've not done in ages) and let the computer (try to) do its 'thing'. All that resulted was the security center (red shield) nagging me that I don't have antivirus - likely hoping to detect MSE or something. I restarted a few times and left it running most of the day and now I'm back with (practically) all services disabled (how I prefer it). So.. again, not sure what that accomplished. Perhaps I need "professional help" - regarding the computer issue ... of course. Ha! Enjoy your day/evening all, and I'll be back in May1 point

MSI Afterburner 4.6.3.16053 with RivaTuner Statistics Server 7.3.1.24485 works fine on my Windows 8.1 installation, so it seems OP's issue can't be Windows version alone. It is yet to be tried, but an older version of RivaTuner Statistics Server's RTSSHooks.dll bundled with MSI Afterburner 4.6.2 doesn't depend on K32GetProcessMemoryInfo function. I only dug through to the DLL with 7-Zip to check its dependencies with PE Viewer. Found the installer on Filehorse. My theory is that they wanted the world to forget about the old systems at some point, so "supported" would take into the account whether an OS is still supported (at the time of writing). Also, you were looking at the documentation for driver developers. Average Joe would go here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/winnt/nf-winnt-interlockedcompareexchange (this one says XP is the minimum).1 point

Hi Dave.. To be honest.. I've never "installed" any of roy's builds (both serpent or new moon) - I just unzip the 7zip files on my drive into the desired folders (in my case) [C:\Program Files\Basilisk] and run the application, which in turn creates the profile(s)/folder(s) C:\Documents and Settings\DELL\Application Data\Moonchild Productions\Basilisk C:\Documents and Settings\DELL\Local Settings\Application Data\Moonchild Productions\Basilisk C:\Documents and Settings\DELL\Application Data\Mozilla\Extensions (for me; empty) When I decide to start fresh, I just delete everything related to the application; so it has never shown in Add/Remove Programs, for me anyway. EDIT: The only issues I've run into, is, CCleaner won't pick up Serpent automatically. It was @Sampei.Nihira that helped me to use custom rules to clean up after itself.1 point

I just tried out roytam's build of Serpent, and was puzzled to find that there appears to be no uninstallation option for it. It didn't appear in Add/Remove Programs. Is that normal? I just deleted its folders, is that the only way of uninstalling it or have I missed something? I used i430VX's installer to install it.1 point

credit to @user57 in the "Windows XP Media Center Edition" subforum <snip> working Chromium v87 for windows xp download links: http://www.filedropper.com/minibrowsersetup1071 https://www.file-upload.net/download-14566263/MiniBrowserSetup_1071.exe.html https://easyupload.io/e3fdad https://transferxl.com/08M79dPPgqG1M https://file.io/wFhiH69x9vge https://filebin.net/jqbzrykgxjv8hl2r </snip> I've tried in XP and it seems to work quite well. You don't need to "install" it. And I use the "360Loader" from 360Chrome to run it as a "portable". Extract the "MiniBrowserSetup_1071.exe" installer file using 7-Zip. You then only need the "bin" folder. Copy the 360Chrome folder over to a new location. It should contain only "360Loader.exe", "360Loader.ini", and a folder called "Chrome". Copy the "bin" folder into the "Chrome" subfolder. Edit the "360Loader.ini" file - here is what I am using - <start> [Setup] AppName=MiniBrowser [FileToRun] PathToExe=.\Chrome\Bin\$AppName$.exe Parameters=--user-data-dir="%Profile%" --disable-logging --no-default-browser-check --disable-component-update --disable-background-networking --allow-outdated-plugins --cipher-suite-blacklist=0xe013 --disable-webgl [Environment] Profile=.\Chrome\User Data Registry=%Profile%\Registry [Functions] DirCreate=%Profile%|%Registry% [WriteToReg=%Registry%\$AppName$.reg] MainKey=HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MiniChrome [RunBefore] RegEdit=%Registry%\$AppName$.reg [RunAfter] [Options] DeleteTemp=true ShowSplash=false WriteLog=false ShowTrayTip=false </end> You can now launch this new browser as a portable viia the "360Loader.exe" and not affect your other browsers.1 point

@XPerceniol Is the Microsoft Catalogue actually working for you? Just as an aside, you don't have to use Internet Explorer for the catalogue, just in case you weren't aware, it should work in any browser. Windows/Microsoft Update needs IE as it uses ActiveX controls, which don't work anywhere else, but the catalogue is a standard site.1 point

Thank you very much! However, the code did not work on my system using Python 3.4. It appears there are some syntax errors (at least when running it with 3.4) plus it tries to access the download subfolder without creating it first, which fails upon file write. I've adapted your code, fixing all the breaking stuff, adding the folder creation and a few more human-readable strings for what I believe are more common HTTP return codes. One new required Python module: "os". It's not very efficient I guess, trying to create the subfolder on every iteration, but hey, I am no Python programmer at all. But this did work for me (Python 3.4 on some old CentOS 6.10 Linux): import csv import os import requests # Add/replace the filenames in csv_files below with the CSV files you want to download csv_files = ['NT_5.1.2600-x86-All.csv', 'NT_5.1.2600-x86-IE-All.csv', 'NT_5.2.3790-x64-All.csv', 'NT_5.2.3790-x64-IE.csv', 'NT_5.2.3790-x86-All.csv', 'NT_5.2.3790-x86-IE.csv'] for csvfile in csv_files: print('Starting file download for' , csvfile) with open(csvfile) as csv_file: csv_reader = csv.reader(csv_file, delimiter=',') # Read comma-delimited CSV line_count = 0 for row in csv_reader: # Iterate over rows if line_count == 0: # Output CSV header print('Column names are:' , ' '.join(row)) line_count += 1 else: # Create download folder, but do nothing if it exists already try: os.mkdir('./' + csvfile[:-4] + '_DL/') print('Subfolder' , csvfile[:-4] , '_DL/' , 'created') except FileExistsError: pass print('\tDownloading' , row[0] , '...') url = row[1] r = requests.get(url) # Get WU file with open('./' + csvfile[:-4] + '_DL/' + row[0], 'wb') as f: f.write(r.content) # Write WU file to disk # Let's define some human-redable HTTP status codes to output if r.status_code == 200: status = ', OK' elif r.status_code == 403: status = ', FORBIDDEN' elif r.status_code == 404: status = ', NOT FOUND' elif r.status_code == 500: status = ', INTERNAL SERVER ERROR' elif r.status_code == 502: status = ', BAD GATEWAY' elif r.status_code == 504: status = ', GATEWAY TIMEOUT' else: status = '' print('\tCompleted with status code' , r.status_code , status) # Write error log, should an error have occurred if r.status_code != 200: with open('./error.log', 'wb') as errLog: errLog.write(('FAIL: ' + row[0] + ', ERROR CODE: ' + str(r.status_code) + status + '\nFAILED URL: ' + row[1] + '\n\n').encode()) line_count += 1 print('Processed' , line_count , 'lines.') print('Download Completed.') I haven't introduced any additional, Linux/POSIX-specific stuff, so this should work on Windows just as well (or so I hope). Edit: Further extended the code. It now writes an error log to file error.log including file name and URL should any errors occur during the downloading process. That way you won't miss any download errors.1 point

It was a client requirement at the time. Client was using Linux systems in-house to run this particular hardware setup but wanted to introduce a Windows based product. The typical Windows behaviour (even to this day) is to use default outputs. We had tried many different OS to accomplish it, XP Pro x86, XP Ultimate x86, XPe, XPee, Vista Business, Ultimate and even some versions of Server 2003. XP x64 was the only one that allowed for each sound card to have dedicated input and output. Basically, they could output audio on each sound card simultaneously. Whereas the other OS (or even current one) likes to only use 1 "Default" output, no matter how many audio controllers you have. Even on my Win7 PC at home it cannot do this. Despite I have sound controllers on the video card and sound card. If I want to have audio go to my AVR instead of my PC speakers, I have to set the HDMI Audio output as default and then it will work. There is no option for me to output audio through both the video card and sound card.1 point

@dmiranda : If a HTTPS "proxy" is being involved, then check in Serpent 52 that: "Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Connections -> Settings -> Connection Settings (popup) -> Configure Proxies to Access the Internet" is set to "No proxy" ; the default setting in a new/clean profile is "Use system proxy settings", i.e. the proxy configuration inside IE8 is being used for Serpent 52, too...1 point
