  1. Here I sit at the end of 2020 setting up a new high-end Dell workstation running Win 10 Pro for Workstations 20H2... The machine has double the processor speed, double the RAM bandwidth, 3x the GPU speed, and 6x the I/O throughput capacity of my prior workstation, and I'm thinking I've got it in pretty good shape with "only" 137 processes running to support an idle desktop... Seems snappy enough, though not knock-your-socks-off faster compared to my circa 2012 workstation running Win 8.1. Seems just about equally interactive, actually. It's not like Visual Studio starts up instantly. The machine's specs are way beyond the computer of my wildest dreams when I was younger yet somehow still feels disappointingly bloated even after a half day of setting up and tweaking. Guess I still have to tweak some more. I installed the latest VMware Workstation version and booted up a Win 10 VM I hadn't used in a while and realized it's still on v1909 build 18363.693 and still runs Big Muscle's Aero Glass for Win 8+ just fine. Sigh. I thought I had gotten used to these stupid, Windows 10 square borderless windows and now I see these windows with borders and rounded corners and feel the pain all over again. Elegance is worth something and its loss hurts forever. I hate how a machine that can complete a copy of a 2 GB file in well under a second still puts up a progress bar for the deletion of a single small file because I guess Microsoft feels laypeople need more feedback. Why does bloat have to expand to equal the rate of hardware improvement? Where is that written? -Noel

  3. I wouldn't word it that way. #1675 is only a month old. Mypal 27.9.4 (my default-for-all browser-of-choice) is from July 2018.

  6. Well , that's odd , I didn't hear anything "bad" about Vista in my country . We had Siemens laptops and desktops during that days , they were quite popular and fast/robust. Later Siemens became just Fujitsu , but that's another story . Though, I liked Siemens better because they used higher quality parts. And this one , yes , I heard that alot too : "advised to replace Vista with XP after buying a PC" . Actually I did it it (but with Win2000). Just for some time , until dark themes became available . I couldn't stand Vista's paper white folder backgrounds . Are you OK with not being able to customize the background ? Earlier Windows didn't have a problem with that. Oh , and Windows 7 wasn't that popular here , we still had plenty of good working Siemens PCs , in good condition with Vista pre-installed . There was no need to replace it with Win7 , which is worse. So , many people here just skipped to Win8 (NOT including me). These days the situation is much worse . It's like a ton of zombies around and everyone with Win10/Linux.

  7. Oh , thanks for the info , yet another reason to not purchase new cards from Nvidia . I decided to boycott them when they removed 16x and 32x CSAA for no apparent reason and without warnings.

  8. It might be a lot simpler to use a newer OS as host for a Vista VM, instead of the other way around.

  9. Status Update -- So far, I can claim that I "trust" v13 (repack with newtab disabled). But I can't say the same for v12 - screencap below.

  10. The first "problem" and the one that needs to be addressed by UXP issue #1675 is the embedded web player on rutube.ru not loading/displaying in UXP browsers (New Moon 28, Serpent 52, IceApe-uxp, BNavigator, etc.), whereas the rest of the rutube.ru site is being loaded/displayed correctly. The second problem (probably unrelated to the first one) with the rutube.ru site is that in NM27 it appears to load at first, but then it vanishes into thin air, leaving an empty tab; in deprecated Mypal 27.9.4 and in Arctic Fox 27.11 (both Tycho forks, much like NM27), the site in question does load (no "second" problem present), but, of course, minus the embedded web player ("first" problem still present...). One begs the question what good it might be having a video portal working in a browser minus the ability to watch videos there (...), but to each their own...

  11. 15.x versions are bad (glitchy) in @win32's and my opinion , sorry.

  12. I see 15.x on your photo . Try other versions of VMware . 10.x smth.

  13. Hi The problem is different, it's the complete website that doesn't work on New moon 27.9.7, whereas on the previous posts it was only about the video player that didn't work on the "rutube" website. on all Roytam1 browsers .

  14. @justacruzr2 Just a rather late thought that it might be useful to look at this thread. I had exactly the same problem with Windows 98 as you have now with XP. Looking at the thread again now, it's not quite as irrelevant to your issue as I thought, as although you wouldn't be able to use the same driver I did on Windows 98, there is important information in some of the earlier posts about how the HD Audio system works, with the HD Audio bus, which needs its own driver, which the actual audio hardware works through, and needs its own driver as well. HTH.

  16. This is a nice surprise: MinGW compiler v8.4.0 works on Windows XP Not the normal release though (the latest v6 is already not working on XP) but the ReactOS Build Environment 2.2.1 version. This v8.4.0 MinGW compiler does seem to have difficulty finding its headers in the normal .\include folder, but it works flawless when I put these headers inside the other include folder, some subfolders down the .\lib\gcc\ folder. ReactOS Build Environment 2.2.1 also includes CMake v3.17.2, but without the GUI component. As for the official CMake packages: v3.13.5 is latest that runs on XP.

  17. Please respect other members , haven't you read that poor guy is tortured with vibrating ? Extensions are working and not everyone needs autoupdate . And we don't need extensions in other languages. So they are working for us (98-99% of folks). And the second lies about Opera Ablocker , read what @Win10-Hater wrote. I didn't read your huge sheet after these two.

  22. [OT] Thanks @XP-x64-Lover for helping me!!! I'm a Vista user who was struggling to find a free SSD trimming program and Kingston SSD Manager does not support Vista, as you may know (I use Vista on an a400 SSD). Smart Defrag was the solution to this problem of mine! Best regards, Win10-Hater (I'm on my phone now and there are no angular brackets on the Gboard, so had to use square brackets for the OT tags) [/OT]

  23. I wanted to addon: Open Shell is just an ineffective bandaid on a broken windowpane. I know, Open Shell/Classic Shell is a great application, but it makes sense to use only on Windows 8.x which is easier to tweak than the god-awful Windows 10. @monkeylove, do you understand why and how I hate Windows 10 now?

  24. No, not at all, which shows how there is more "ugh" than "oomph" in Windows 10 (hence my username matches with how I feel about Windows 10!!). I can't even switch b/w standard and scientific modes! I feel more or less the same!! My Dell Inspiron 15 3567 came with a bloated Windows 10 Home which, even after uninstalling OEM bloat, was slow! But, IMO, LTSC only makes Windows 10 installs half-usable. For example, on a 5400rpm HDD, Firefox used to take 10 seconds to open up on Win10 compared to almost instantly on 8.1 and 3-4 seconds on Win7. Word, Excel etc. took about a minute to open up completely on Windows 10 compared to almost 5-6 seconds on both Windows 7 and 8.1.

  27. Vista was, is and will be good os. Your problems had to be driver related. though I would not replace 8.1 with vista I don’t see why some could not. The extended kernel project is miracle and it is secure as much as windows 7 since you know, no updates too :p

  30. I DIdn't install any telemetry updates, also no compattelrunner.exe in my windows folder. I'm quite happy with how windows 8.1 looks, windows 7 look looks dated in my opinion (Don't kill me for that )

  33. Oh yeah, I’m working on it. Just glad, that it works for now to finish my transfer period to spotify. (Apple effectively lost paying customer). True indeed. Oh yeah, 3 clean installs of the os itself. The problem is, that the driver only installs through inf file. You cannot use compatibility mode and install it any other way. Amd made sure to block nt 6.2 and 6.3 everywhere they could. Also that is HUGE bs, because on the box for rx 480 Windows 8.1 is displayed and not whole year after this card has released, they dropped the support? My ryzen pc build is running rock solid though, nvidia drivers are just awesome, not a single bad word against them. Nvidia seems to care about windows 8.1 and I love them for that that was ax 200 (wifi 6 spec pcie card) and his respond to one of the person asking on their forum.

  34. Yes, @AeroSeeker, I agree with you that Linux is in many ways better than Windows 10, but one of the things I love about earlier Windows versions is that the UI was great (for example, Windows Vista's Aero UI and taskbar), but sadly, tweaking Linux to make it look just like a Windows Vista clone is impossible. I'm saying this because I'm not a fan on the Gnome, Mate, XFCE, LXDE etc.etc. themes in Linux.

  35. You shouldn't remove any byte as that will make the entire binary file useless. Just put the text cursor in front of "S" of SetDefaultDllDirectories (the hex value of 53 will get highlighted so you'll see what to change), then put the cursor in front of highlighted 53 and make it 00. Before you type it, make sure the program is in Overwrite mode, it's indicated in the status bar and can be changed by pressing Insert key. Overwrite mode is default though and the program warns you when you make any action that changes the size of the file.

  36. Well, it is sad, everything seems to be ok, except this. Have you ever thought of creating portable launchers to such evil programs/games with emulating options ? By the way , any news regarding Opera ? I've tried again with the newest files , nothing happens , it just doesn't show any errors . do you know why ? By the way , chromium also doesn't work without the flag mentioned by the banned user.

  37. Hi , I've come across this info "On Windows 7 and later operating systems, the .NET Framework retrieves culture data from the operating system ... The CultureNotFoundException is thrown if the operating system is unable to find the culture..." Is that true ? Isn't that why I can't solve this problem with the game ? Any other way to "tell" the game what culture is needed ? Thanks https://forums.asp.net/t/2080862.aspx?CultureNotFoundException+can+occur+when+culture+is+set+to+auto+in+web+config

  40. Yeah, and windows default sounds are also like pleasant music to our ears. Today's windows 8.x and 10 sounds are not great, especially the Windows 10 ones that reflect the bland look of the default ui. And in 8.x, the Vista style sounds were still there to replace the default ones but in Win10, they were gone!

  41. I don't game and have never done so at all, so don't ask about gaming experience. As for video and sound quality, it's just WOW on Vista!!

  42. Yes, agreed. But I was talking about alternatives to Windows 10. No denying that with a smart Brain.exe and regular scans using Malwarebytes, we can prevent Windows 7 virus or malware attacks, but since Vista is a lot more obscure than Win7, it is very unlikely that Vista will be targeted. I want to make this statement clear.

  43. Anyone using Vista Business purely because you need the aero interface, the handy backup and restore center with full functionality and presentation mode but do not care about Bitlocker (who even uses Bitlocker these days?) and media center and don't mind sacrificing them? I do.

  44. Wow, that's what I'd call a completely future-proofed machine (1200p glass panel!)! Your Vista is up to date? Using Chromium with extended kernel is what I recommend instead of browsing on Mypal. You have lots of advantages such as better content viewing on most sites and google meet also works with chromium on Vista. It does not work on mypal/ new moon or similar browsers.

  45. I got Vista Ultimate x64 running on old dell M6400 mobile workstation. Specs: Core2duo X9100,2x4gb ddr3, Nvidia Quadro 3700M 1gb, 17" 1920x1200 glass panel, backlit keyboard and dock with 230w power brick. For hard drives got 160gb wd scorpio black for OS and 320gb wd scorpio blue for games/software. It runs vista because last user had upgraded Windows vista business on it to ultimate and he gave me install dvd with packaging so wanted give it a shot. After fresh install and updates it ran pretty well. I use Mypal web browser on it. That machine is very fast on up to date vista and got excellent panel for laptop.

  47. What do I have to do to reach such long boot times ? I've tried Vista on many systems , and it is usually like 5 - 16 seconds. And that is on mechanical HDDs. WD Raptor , WD Black , etc . My friend runs Vista on Haswell and the boot time is 5 seconds. Those 30+ seconds seems fair only for 2007 year laptops with slow HDDs. Also , I noticed Vista prefer WD and HGST over Seagate , just my to cents, from my experience.

  49. I guess it's neat that you devoted so much time to this... but I don't understand why you would want to do this. Did you also convert your new Honda Accord to run on a carborator? People complain about security, installing Vista on Fat32 instead of NTFS is like leaving your doors unlocked at night.
