  1. Sorry all for the brief hiatus from continuing the work on the list. I've been swamped at work lately (Christmas time - which means hundreds of packages to deliver every day ) I will try my best to work on the list when possible this month, but I probably won't be able to do much until January when "peak season" (as we refer to it at the USPS) is over. Thank you all for understanding, and Happy Holidays, everyone!

  2. @j7n @UCyborg @VistaLover If you're interested guys, I also found out the minimum Firefox non-ESR version required to render the discourse-based site "boards.straightdope.com". The minimum Firefox non-ESR version required for it to load fully is 89.0.

  3. Wow! I'm stunned. I thought it had been awhile since we had heard from him. I have to agree with @Sampei.Nihiram in that we're hearing a lot of sad and stunning news lately. These announcements increasinly take the wind out of you. Above all, I appreciate dencorso's help over the years with tech questions. My condolences to those here who knew him best.

  6. Brief Update. So the search for updates in WUv4 works thanks @WinFX again only unfortunately results.asp is missing because it was not archived properly. It redirects to splash.asp?page=3. That means we can't view or install the updates. I think that we will find a solution for this problem. The Update Catalog is the next project. Here some screenshots:

  8. 18 years, 4 months, 9 days Yeah, I do wonder if paid forum software is a bit of an overkill, considering some members here are not far away from wanting it to be viewable on Commodore 64. But yes, not sure phpBB does some of the stuff other software do, like live notifications. I saw XenForo even updating time of the last post when you're viewing list of threads without having to refresh the page. Some features might be available on multiple forum software and configurable. Pretty sure the forum would disappear or something if he wasn't. It's interesting - I have the impression he's not interested in most stuff posted here. I did read about another forum, specifically oriented towards Windows XP and some guy runs it just to provide a place for others to discuss, but has no interest in Windows XP himself. I don't recall the forum name...is it possible it's the same one you're visiting?

  9. Yes, and I have some examples for that. Google Chrome, as of version 99, got an experimental new download UI that is similar to Microsoft Edge and Firefox's download UI. Mozilla Firefox, as of version 106, got some PDF editing tools (some being similar to Edge), and setting Firefox as your default browser, also sets it as the default PDF reader, exactly in the same way as Edge.

  17. I'm a bit late to the announcement but this is extremely sad news for me. I credit Den a lot for me becoming a moderator here on MSFN. I still remember he offered the position to me to which I humbly and graciously accepted it. We had some good discussions back and forth and because he was originally into Windows 98 like I was, we easily found common ground that way. Den was a very kind, cordial, and courteous person. When I first heard he was diagnosed with cancer, I was deeply saddened. I lost both my grandparents to cancer and my mother is a cancer survivor, so I don't like cancer very much to say the least. As optimistic as he seemed to be about keeping the cancer at bay, I was really hoping he'd return one day like nothing ever happened. But he'd go months without any sort of an update and that was very worrying to me. Now the worst has happened, but he is at peace now and pain-free, which is the best thing out of a horrible situation like this. Rest in Peace buddy, until we meet again!

  18. First I want to say "Thanks!" @roytam1 for all these new builds released nearly every week and the permission to mirror them on my own website! Can't remember when I did that last time... Your work is really appreciated by all who are writing here and additionally a lot of silent users! And not to forget "Thanks!" to all supporters and contributors! Second Sorry for posting a bit late, I'm still worn out by SARS-CoV-2 - nothing really bad, I'm just some kind of exhausted/sluggish. Third The mirror of latest ArcticFox 40, BNavigator 0.9, Firefox 45ESR, IceApe 52, IceDove 52, K-Meleon 1.5.x/74/76, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28, RetroZilla, RZ browser and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest BNavigator 0.9 20221126 build - added latest IceApe 52 20221126 build - added latest IceDove 52 20221126 build - added latest K-Meleon 76 20221126 build - added latest MailNews 52 20221126 build - added latest New Moon 27 20221126 builds - added latest New Moon 28 20221126 builds - added latest Serpent 52 20221126 builds - added latest Serpent 55 20221126 builds To don't lose track of things I want to update too someday... todo: - add various flash player versions - add FlashFix for WinXP - add VLC 2.2.8 (WinXP non-SSE2) - add polyfill addons ------------------------------------------- I don't have this backspace problem myself, just thought that this input may help someone!? I have this "YT problem" too, but thought it is related to latest hot s*** YT uses to render the page. But nevertheless YT still works...yeah it's extremely slow, I know. After doing a reconnect to my ISP I got an IP from a completely different IP range and could connect to the former FTP with WinSCP, the ladder still fails. So my IP (range) was the problem, it just has been blocked. This FTP is very old, has a lot of important files and I don't know how long it will be available in the future. So I begun to mirror the two directories which are important to me (/pub/Hardware/stuff/ and /pub/Hardware/vendor/) - still not finished (11.7 GiB until now), if I get 50 kb/s I can be really happy (the FTP is the slow part, not my internet connection). But nevertheless: Thank you, I really appreciate your efforts! BTW Welcome back! BTW2 I would recommend WinSCP instead of FileZilla. The latest version (portable) still works under WinXP and up - you can also install WinSCP 5.15.9 (XP) / 5.17.5 (Vista) and replace the executable with the one from the latest portable version (actually 5.21.6). kind regards soggi

  20. Presumably (don't quote me on this!) it's used for capturing video off webcam. https://support.google.com/meet/thread/157845243/i-need-help-with-camera-failed-in-google-meet?hl=en Maybe, judging by one answer there, Media Foundation is default for newer OS and DirectShow may be used by default on older Windows OS. I don't know whether it falls back to DirectShow when the flag is enabled and MF isn't available. Edit: Well, that would be logical, but need an actual webcam or maybe some software that makes a virtual capture device to test. I seem to remember DxTory making one, but never actually tried how it works.

  37. <OT> Hello and nice day, @Tripredacus and hope you are well. I was wondering if its easy to "merge" threads on here, and if so, would you desire to merge the thread https://msfn.org/board/topic/183764-“be-mindful-be-grateful-be-positive-be-true-be-kind”/ into the thread https://msfn.org/board/topic/182193-the-msfn-café-a-penny-for-your-thoughts/ Having two similar (off-topic chat) threads may cause more confusion here to some; but members, please know that postings in the funny farm don't count towards ones post count. I think we only need the msfn-café. If not, perhaps closing the first thread might be best as it seems at times like we're 'all over the place' with off-topic. Just a request and otherwise, not issues or problems. Take care <OT>

  38. Suckers for learning: why octopuses are so intelligent by Lisa Poncet Our last common ancestor with the octopus existed more than 500 million years ago. So why is it that they seem to show such peculiar similarities with humans, while at the same time appearing so alien? Perhaps because despite their tentacles covered with suckers and their lack of bones, their eyes, brains and even their curiosity remind us our own thirst for knowledge. In ethology, the study of behaviour, we explore this intelligence, which we classify as individual “cognitive abilities”. These are the mechanisms through which information from the environment is perceived, processed, transformed, remembered and used to take decisions and act. From a behavioural point of view, the flexibility with which an animal can adapt itself and adjust its behaviour to novel situations is a good indicator of its cognitive abilities. Numerous studies indicate the octopuses possess great flexibility in their behaviours, whether they express them in their natural environment or inside a tank in a laboratory. Armed and dangerous So what makes octopuses so smart? Let’s focus first on their defence mechanisms. Faced with multiple predators – including fish, birds and whales – octopuses are masters of camouflage. They can imitate their environment by modifying the colour and even the texture of their skin. Without a shell, octopuses are vulnerable, and always try to remain hidden in a shelter such as a cavity or the space beneath a rock. Some species maintain their shelter by removing sand and adding pebbles and shells. Some prefer to wrap themselves in shells and pebbles, while others transport their shelter in their arms. This is the case for the coconut octopus, which, true to its name, has been observed carrying coconut shells around to hide within in case of danger.... 40. Animal friendships are surprisingly like our own Publié: 12 octobre 2022, 17:47 CEST by Beki Hooper - Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Animal Behaviour, University of Exeter Delphine De Moor - Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Animal Behaviour, University of Exeter Erin Siracusa - Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Animal Behaviour, University of Exeter slowmotiongli/Shutterstock When you think of friendship, what comes to mind? Is it a phone conversation that lasts late into the night? Watching a movie and sharing a pizza? Enjoying some laughs over a beer? Friendship is a central part of the human experience. Our stories, our songs and our conversations are fabrics woven with threads of friendship. In scientific terms, two people are considered friends if they consistently prefer each other over other individuals. Humans aren’t the only ones who form friendships, though. Two baby Bonobo sitting on the grass. Gudkov Andrey/Shutterstock It may not shock you that our closest relatives, such as chimpanzees and bonobos, make friends. But species throughout the animal kingdom, from birds and fish to horses and dolphins, have pals too. And you might be surprised to learn just how much they resemble our own human friendships. Birds of a feather When you think about your own friends, you might realise that you are alike in one way or another. Maybe you grew up in the same town and went to school together, share hobbies or have similar jobs. This inclination for similarity, or what scientists call “homophily”, is not exclusive to humans. It is thought this preference for similarity increases the predictability and trust of a friend. Monkeys, zebras, marmots, elephants, and whales all show a preference for interacting with group mates close in age to them. Chimpanzees and Assamese macaques like to hang out with partners who have a similar personality (yes, animals have personalities too) and dolphins favour other dolphins who find their food in a similar way. Marmots like their friends to be close to them in age. Tadeas Skuhra/Shutterstock One of the most established homophilic tendencies is an affinity for others who share the same genes: for kin. Across the animal kingdom, species show a predilection for interacting with relatives. So despite those stubborn sibling rivalries, family can be some of the very best friends you have. It’s physical When we consider the importance of touch for relationships, we often think about romantic partners. But physical connection can be equally important for any kind of relationship. Our animal counterparts show us just how important physical touch can be. Some of the behaviours that animals engage in to form and maintain friendships are quite hands-on. Rooks gently preen friends with their beaks, while monkeys groom pals with their hands. These behaviours aren’t so different from how we humans embrace our friends. ... In some animals though, friendship rituals can look wild. White-faced capuchins greet their best buds by sticking their fingers in each other’s eye sockets. Male Guinea baboon test their bonds by fondling each other’s genitals. The friendship rituals of white-faced capuchin monkeys aren’t for the fainthearted. So, while we don’t recommend poking the eye sockets of your friends, a hug the next time you greet your best friend may not go amiss. Distance is no barrier But, of course, not all friendships require people to be near one another. Animals provide many examples of how friendships can flourish even when pals are apart. Dolphins foster closeness by exchanging calls with other dolphins across long distances. Dolphin whistles can travel up to 740 meters to help preserve long-distance attachments. Many primates, including lemurs, Japanese macaques, bonobos and chimps use vocalisations to sustain social bonds. These dolphins look like a friendly bunch. Andrea Izzotti/Shutterstock Friendships can even form in species that actively avoid one another. North American red squirrels are territorial, meaning they each defend their own homes and rarely come into contact apart from mating. But scientists have shown squirrels who live next to each other for a long time develop friendships that help them live longer and have more babies. The longer these squirrels live close to the same neighbour, the more they relax and spend less time and energy defending their territory. While in the past friends were formed with those we spent physical time with, international travel, social media and video calls have changed the way we connect. Although human friendship has begun to look a little different, especially since the COVID pandemic, our animal counterparts suggest that good friendships can be nurtured even at a distance. Literal lifesavers Friendship evolved because it helps us, whether we are human or not. Animals (including humans) who have allies live longer and healthier lives by helping their companions deal with challenges. Comrades can offer support in times of conflict and provide protection against threats like predators and food shortage. This can prevent injuries and death. For example, socially integrated killer whales and wolves are more likely to survive when food is scarce than those on the edges of their groups. This is because their friends share food and social information about where to find it. Two grey wolves playing. Raphael Rivest/Shutterstock We still have much to learn about animal friendship and some scientists are devoted to deepening our understanding of animal social bonds. Modern human life tends to be far removed from risks such as being hunted by bears and wolves, but the bottom line still holds true. Humans make friends because there are mutual benefits. Those perks might be a shoulder to cry on, a babysitter to watch our kids, or a heads up about job opportunities. As whales, birds and primates prove, friends help us. Without them we are less likely to survive and thrive. Here: https://theconversation.com/animal-friendships-are-surprisingly-like-our-own-188120

You should forget ftp://ftp.cc.ntut.edu.tw/pub/ because that one times-out for everybody, but the first one should work ! In any case, the host doesn't provide any immediate info about the actual size of directory "pub": However, just to humour you, last night I fired up FileZilla (v3.40.0-rc2, last version to launch under Vista SP2 32-bit) and I let it overnight to sync with "ftp.dyu.edu.tw" (took some hours); here's a screengrab of the end result (GUI in Greek): As I hope you can see for yourself, remote directory "pub" contains a total of 30,445 distinct files, which amount to ca. 307.9GiB of disk space ; how can all of this be mirrored elsewhere just for you? ...
