  1. At the end of October, I did a new installation of Office 2010 onto my netbook, which is running 32 bit Windows 10. 11 updates were offered after the base install, including SP2. After I installed those, another 63 updates were offered post SP2. You can see the list here. Despite the supposed end of support, there have been another 10 updates offered since I did that, they are listed in my posts later in that thread. HTH.

  3. What is it? OldNewExplorer is the Windows 10 (and Windows 8.1, and 8) shell extension / tweaker which can undo "improvements" to file browsing made in newer Windows version. Everything is optional for your liking. - Restore devices / drives grouping Everything is 'Devices and drives'. That's stupid! O-N-E can restore grouping which made sense in Win7/8. - Restore libraries / remove folders Remove all those folders which were unoptionally added into Windows 8.1 This PC folder and put the libraries back to their place, without registry hacking / breaking apps. - Restore command bar / remove Ribbon Because some people consider it an abomination. - Restore details pane at bottom Same reason; reclaim useful horizontal space. - Improve styling Get rid of some Win7 stuff here and there; improve styling with some built-in visual styles. For themers / skinners, O-N-E can help to override a lot of hardcoded styling in Windows 8, maybe even Start screen! Download https://tihiy.net/files/OldNewExplorer.rar TEST VERSION READ BELOW 100% FREE Stupid FAQ - This is a TEST version, no installer. Potentially dangerous too! - This is for Windows 8.1. Also should work for Windows 8 as well, though 8.1 options do not apply there; - No changes are enabled by default. If something does not apply, try logging off / restarting explorer.exe; - Install is for all users, settings are per-user. For long thoughful posts use email.

  4. The current stable 3.0.11 works on XP, while later versions of the extended kernel allow for 3.0.0 (and a few after that iirc) to work mostly, but it crashes if you load one of the setting pages...

  5. Maybe DanR20 only meant Windows 2000? VLC 4.0 will not support XP/Vista, but it’s still in beta AFAIK.

  7. A little off topic but for XP\2000 users another alternative to google’s slow and annoying video player rendering with their “new and improved” youtube layout is to stream with VLC player. You probably wouldn’t want to use it very time but when I’m watching a bunch of videos in a row it comes in handy as it's quick and streams flawlessly with no worries of ads. For those interested the last VLC version to work in the older operating systems is 2.2.6, which can still be downloaded off the internet, filepuma has it. And as if google’s constant changing and breaking of their sites isn’t enough, they also apparently relish doing the same to their streaming protocols as well on occasion killing video playing with VLC but mercifully linkfanel at github keeps up with it: https://github.com/videolan/vlc/blob/master/share/lua/playlist/youtube.lua You need to download it raw, make sure its name is youtube.lua and then replace the old one in the app\vlc\lua\playlist folder.

  9. Hi I no longer use youtube with Windows XP because they do everything they can to make it difficult for us to view videos with scripts that crash all the time on browsers adapting to xp. The "Good Old YouTube 1.16.0" plug-in no longer works on xp browsers, but there are workarounds for this problem. I use "https://instances.invidio.us" which works much better or even the Russian copy of youtube "https://kzclip.com" which uses the old youtube interface for streaming youtube videos and which does not cause any problem on browsers adapting to xp. The proof that this problem is intentionally caused by the people in charge of youtube.

  10. This will all end as usual , yet another tax or forced regulation on the shoulders of the Western European and/or Canadian , US , Australian and New Zealand customers/population. And we will pay for the whole planet , while the rest will pollute as usual , if not more . Why there's no discussion on what's going on with the waste in Asian countries or Russia, for example . Anyone ? ... silence ... Oh , excusez-moi , I forgot for a moment , nowadays it's just so "trendy" to bash the US and/or the West.

  11. I can confirm , for me everything after 10.x isn't working at all , with 11.x and 12.x I can install an ISO , but when I press play VM , it simply does nothing. Tested on these configs with G3470 and X5450 , both with 16GB of RAM . By the way , what version is the best in the 10.x range ? Thanks

  12. So no improvements also ? Apart from the obvious TLS 1.2. But then again , Internet Explorer is useless anyway . And other modern browsers that can be used with exkernel already have 1.2 and 1.3.

  13. Very simple , you just need to choose the extensions which do not have locales . English only , and they will install. I assume you don't need any other languages , just like me :D . Also , if chrome starts howling about "wrong version" , you may unpack this extension with 7zip and force the installation in the >developer mode< from the unpacked folder. The developer switch is on the top of the page. Why do you need 4.6.2 ? It's buggy on Vista . I have had huge problems with it , despite what some others may say. If you want my advice , do not go higher than 4.5.2

  15. In all honesty, I don't quite see why I'm being mentioned by @ArcticFoxie, since in that other thread I clearly stated: ... and everything includes, of course, Adobe Flash Player (their updater has been deleted, I only update at will, manually, my portable (PAF format) browser installations, except for IE9, for which I install the ActiveX globally... As for what @siria mentioned, ... this is still doable, as I already detailed in the dedicated Flash thread last summer: Kind regards

  22. 10.x is good, and is what I use on Vista. Maybe I should install it on my 2012R2 laptop as well, because 15 doesn't cut it on there. For example, error handling has deteriorated; try dragging and dropping files from a compressed folder open in 7zip on the host; 10 gives you an error and continues on its merry way, but 15 crashes the VM. That combined with other Vista-related issues shows how VMware should regret laying off their entire U.S. development team. They probably knew the most, as shown by the deteriorating quality of their recent products. Also, I'm terrible at synchronizing the development files between both locations. I brought my ntk32 files over here, but forgot to do the same for my kernel32 and shell32.

  25. When you copy a file on a "target" disk it is copied (if there is enough contiguous available space) as contiguous, so when you copy a whole set (contents of whole volume) on another (just formatted) volume, it will arrive "defragged". On NTFS there is an exception due to the placement of some of the filesystem metadata files "not at the beginning" of the volume, but it may affect at the most one or a few files, and only if they are extremely large and if they happen to be copied at the "right" moment. (as a side note remember how on NTFS it is a good idea to NOT fill a volume up to the brim, but rather leave some 5/10/15% unused) Once upon a time, in NT 3.51 and early NT 4.00 times there wasn't a "defrag" tool built in in the OS and the "poor man's" solution was exactly that of (using XCOPY) to copy the contents to another volume and then reformat the original and copying them back to the freshly formatted volume. What you propose is essentially a more sophisticated version of the "poor man's" solution above, with the added complication of - if I get this right - the need to phisically disconnect and reconnect the disks exchanging them and the BTW solvable, but not to be underestimated issue with Disk Signature and volume serials (unless you clear the source and copy back the data from the target, that will however take time) . It is a "nice" idea, but I doubt that its objective complication (a second "identical" - or bigger - hard disk available) is either worth it or it applies to more than a few, very particular scenarios is compensated by an increase in efficiency. What makes "normal" defragmentation a bit slower is actually the availability of enough free and contiguous space on the volume, so - in case - it would IMHO make more sense to copy to the second volume only the largest and more fragmented files until you have enough free space, then run a "normal" defrag on the source and then copy back the temporarily moved files from second disk. Another form of optimization (for the booting times only) was once (for the BartPE's and similar) to burn files on CD in the exact sequence they are loaded at boot time. On CD/DVD (please read as very slow media) this had dramatic effects. Later on USB sticks we tried the same approach with (obviously) decreased effects the faster was the stick, on (fastish) USB disk drives the boot time decrease was negligible, I have to presume that on internal disks it will be something that while it can be observed and measured by timing the process, is in practice unnoticeable. The "only" advantage that I can see in this or similar approach on NTFS is that the $MFT will be at its minimal size, but - on the other hand - on a "normally used" volume the $MFT does not usually grow much more than needed (the exception being if you create a zillion files and you later delete them). jaclaz

  27. The jury is out on whether we can even do anything to stop or change the path of the climate, however it is more important that we can agree that pollution of any sort is bad and we can always do more to cut down on that and make our environment better for each other. E-waste is primarily caused by many things, of which I can think, but these may be limited to the US. - manufacturers creating products with planned obsolescene and/or not following standards, resulting in short lifespans. - manufacturers using designs that are not publicly documented, or keep documentation behind paywalls or subscription plans. - manufacturers that replace whole parts (such as boards) instead of fixing or replacing individual components. - manufacturers that sue repair shops - trades (in general) not seen as important and not taught in schools, especially electronics Going back to the 1990s, there were repair shops all over the place. You could take you electronic gadget to get fixed and it was an actual fix and not just a PCB replacement. Or you could get the service manual and do the work yourself. Even to this day, if you buy some older electronic device, you can find the service manual online and be able to do a repair yourself. With new products, that isn't an option. As things changed, the removal of electronic repair shops, the disappearing of stores to buy components (although most can be found online), the ceasing of schools teaching trades like electronics/repair and likely the fact that costs have come way down on products has made it so people do not have the same attachment to something they once had. It is cheaper to just "buy a new one" instead of trying to find someone to repair it. Companies do replace products if they are under warranty, but they are doing wholesale changes and does not solve the e-waste issue. It is cheaper for a company to just replace a PCB and sell the "bad" one to a recycler than to spend time to diagnose and repair a problem. So in the current day, there is too few options for what to do with broken or unwanted electronics. Pay a recycler to take the thing? Put it out into the garbage? Throw it into the woods or the ocean? We had a ton of electronics years ago and didn't have this waste problem because the products lasted longer and they could be fixed. And fixing something was cheaper than buying a replacement, or cheap enough to make waiting for a repair a better option than buying a new one.

  28. @TrevMUN Smart Defrag will assist you in Trimming your SSD Drives. That's what I use, and it's free too; simply run the program and click on Trim & Intelligent Optimize. Now, sometimes your SSD Device will show up as a Hard Drive instead of a Solid State Drive. Simply hoover over where it shows the HDD Icon and your Drive Name; and Two Arrows will appear, click up or down until you see it change your drive to SSD. As stated above, click Trim & Intelligent Optimize, just hoover your mouse over the arrow that's pointing right (It's next to the Trim button) and it will give you that option. I have yet to test Smart Defrag's Trimming abilities with NVME based drives but, I would expect it to work the same way; as long as windows sees it; it should also see it. Enjoy and Good luck!
