  1. There's a recent fix to the Windows Update problem for Windows 7 - install the KB3161608 June 2016 Update Rollup for Win7 SP1, which includes an updated Windows Update Client fix from KB3161647 (released June 21). Although KB3161647 is not offered as an individual patch, it's part of the KB3161608 update rollup. I recently installed the KB3161608 update rollup onto all my Win7 PCs, and after a reboot, Windows Update displays a list of available updates after 5 to 10 minutes of searching for updates instead of searching for a few hours w/out the KB3161608 update installed.
  2. I did not encounter the problem on the 32bit version of Google Chrome v49.0.2623.112 on XP32 & XP x64. But attempting to run the 64bit version of Chrome v49.0.2623.112 produced an error message "The procedure entry point Wow64GetThreadContext could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll" on WinXP Pro x64 SP2. Chrome v50.0.2661.75 was the last one to actually run on Vista SP2 (not on XP) as I tested myself (both 32bit & 64bit versions). However v50.0.2661.87 & higher refused to install nor run on XP & Vista (looks like Google blocked the installation on that one). Anyways, I'll use the win32 (or 32bit) versions of new Firefox versions as they still support XP & Vista. The win64 editions of Firefox only run on Win7 & higher.
  3. Hewlett-Packard has a copy of the KB953028 hotfixes bundled in Softpaq sp41191.exe. "TITLE: DirectX Fix for HP xw9400 Workstations with AMD Opteron 2347 Quad Core Processors - Microsoft Windows XP (KB953028)", VERSION: 1.00 Rev. A
  4. I've used XP64 for a few months on a custom built PC (an Intel D101ggc board with Intel Pentium D 945 3.4ghz cpu, 2Gb of DDR1 SDRAM and 120Gb hard drive) and have no serious problems. one exception is the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Officejet 6500A Plus printer driver which did not install nor function on XP64 because it's not supported [but does support XP32, Vista32, Vista64 & higher] (d**n HP) - there are a handful of HP printers with drivers that won't support XP64 but do support XP32. on the other hand, my other printer (a Lexmark Impact S301) has drivers that do support XP64.
  5. dump MSE on any XP system as Microsoft stopped offering MSE definition updates sometime in 2015 for XP users. the recent virus definition updates for MSE no longer work on XP and require Vista SP2 or higher as I tested them myself. And here's the site where I got those XP64 updates made after April 2014 to July 2015: http://wp.xin.at/xp-x64-post-mortem-updates
  6. flash player was updated to 18.0.0.232 on August 11 as noted in Adobe security bulletin APSB15-19. it should still function on XP. flash ActiveX download is for Internet Explorer, plugin is for Mozilla based browsers (Firefox/Seamonkey) and PPAPI is for browsers like Google Chrome and recent Opera browsers
  7. not really. DX12 is tied to wddm 2.0 spec and wddm 2.0 is a win10-only feature. the Direct3D 12 API requires WDDM 2.0.
  8. direct DL link for KB3023607 x86/32bit avoid installing KB3023607 on computers using Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client application. a "fix it" solution is posted in Microsoft support KB article 3023607 for this broken patch
  9. speaking of KB3023607, that specific patch breaks Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client sofware. KB3023607 is only offered at WU/MU right now (and not through MS download center) and there's a fix for this "broken" patch mentioned in MS KB article 3023607. Do NOT install the KB3023607 update on machines that have Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client application installed!
  10. herbalist, it's the same for any version of Windows XP, including Home edition. my brother and I bought the Windows XP Home Edition RTM upgrade CD that came in a product box back in early 2003 and online activation still works, even past the April 8, 2014 support cut-off date.
  11. Actually the very last version of Google Chrome to work on Intel Pentium 3s / AMD Athlon XP-K7 Semprons is version 34.0.1847.137. I'm using this version of Chrome 34 on an old XP SP3 computer (Intel Celeron 1.1Ghz with 512Mb of RAM) Chrome 35 and above require Intel Pentium 4 with SSE2 & AMD K8 (X2) CPUs or better.
  12. any good reason why you want to use IE7 instead of IE8, ND22?
  13. Links to version 2.58 (final) of the 98 gold / first edition service pack released August 2012: full version (55Mb) lite version (30Mb) I may produce a 3.0 release sometime in 2015 after my family & I move to a new house in early 2015.
  14. effective 12/31/2014, this service pack has been retired as in end-of-life / end-of-support. From this point on I will focus my efforts in continuing the unofficial win98 1st edition SP with a 3.0 release coming sometime in 2015 or later.
  15. That hotfix is still included, even in the latest Realtek HD Audio driver package (R2.74) for Windows 2000/XP. If you're computer uses Realtek HD Audio, there's no need for the KB888111 hotfix; just install the Realtek high definition audio drivers and they will work on XP SP3. Read this little quote from Microsoft KB article 888111: In short, just install the required HD Audio drivers from your PC manufacturer (Conexant, ADI/Soundmax, Sigmatel/IDT, Realtek or VIA) and not worry about KB888111.
  16. actually the KB888111 fix is partially included in XP SP3. Only the hdaudbus.sys (HD Audio Bus Controller) file is there BUT the all important hdaudio.sys (generic HD Audio driver) file is not there in SP3. No there is no XP SP3 KB88811, because it's integrated in XP SP3 already.Do NOT download XP SP3 KB88811. Install the audio driver. only the hdaudbus.sys file from KB888111 was integrated in XP SP3 but not the hdaudio.sys file, cdob. I know this because I have a full WinXP SP3 CD that didn't have the full HDA in the SP3 driver database. And I even downloaded the full XP SP3 network install package and only the hdaudbus.sys file was there [yup, blame Microsoft for only including hdaudbus.sys and not hdaudio.sys in SP3]. There is a way to install KB888111 on SP3 but do so at your own risk. And even if an XP user does succeed in installing KB888111 on SP3, one still has to install the proper HD audio driver afterwards (like Realtek, Sigmatel/IDT, ADI/Soundmax, Conexant or VIA). XP users using Realtek HD audio should just install those drivers directly and not bother installing KB888111. The old & new Realtek HD audio driver packages for XP should install correctly, even on XP SP3.
  17. hey Den & vipejc. I managed to get both of those AMD CPUs SDA3300DKV4E (got that one from Amazon.com this past summer) and AXDA3200DKV4E (got this one from CPUMedics.com). The AMD Sempron 3300+ CPU was recognized by the BIOS for the Foxconn/Winfast K7S741MG motherboard but Windows did not correctly identify the Sempron CPU in Device Manager, I had to remove the CPU in Device Manager and reboot twice to force Windows PnP feature to detect the Sempron CPU. The AMD Sempron 3300+ 2.2Ghz CPU ran fine on my custom built computer, however, this CPU ran a little hotter than the Sempron 3000+ 2.0Ghz that I had before. Fortunately, this Cooler Master CPU fan (spinning between 5113 to 5243 RPM), along with putting Arctic MX-4 carbon-based thermal compound between the cpu & the heatsink kept the Sempron 3300+ CPU cool enough. I ordered the AMD Athlon XP AXDA3200DKV4E CPU for a friend but the motherboard in his computer (a PC Chips M863g mobo) couldn't quite handle it at the correct speed. Since both SDA3300DKV4E & AXDA3200DKV4E CPUs have FSBs of 400Mhz, they will run slower than their designed speed if used in his PC (the M863g mobo can only handle CPUs with FSB speed of 333Mhz) but they run fine on the Foxconn K7S741MG mobo in my computer (which handles CPUs with FSB speeds of either 333Mhz or 400Mhz). I may get the AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2.33Ghz AXDA3200DKV4D for my friend someday - UpgradeBay.com seems to have it sometimes but it's not cheap.
  18. KB2919355 is an update only for Windows 8.1 & Windows Server 2012 R2 and does not apply to any other version of Windows. The KB2993651 patches are good (at least the Vista/Win7/Win8.1 versions as those haven't messed up my Windows computers) and replaces the faulty KB2982791 patches which have caused BSODs at startup on some machines.
  19. I also prefer Windows Vista as long as it's at least SP1 level (SP2 highly recommended). the original/RTM release of Vista was pretty buggy when my mom got a Dell Inspiron laptop with pre-installed Vista home basic edition in June 2007. some of the serious problems of Vista were fixed in SP1 and then in SP2. folks, avoid using Vista at RTM level. update to Vista SP1 or Vista SP2.
  20. bookie32, you need the Swedish IE9 language pack if you want to use Internet Explorer 9 in Swedish language. Go to the linked text and download & install the IE9-Windows6.0-LanguagePack-x86-sve.msu file for IE9. and the version of Vista you have installed must also have the Swedish language pack installed for Vista as well. see this Softpedia page on Vista SP2 MUI language packs; one of them includes the Swedish pack.
  21. The latest versions of SumatraPDF are wonderful and they even load faster than the latest version of Foxit Reader and Adobe Reader. btw, Firefox has a built-in PDF viewer starting with Firefox 19.
  22. what is the model number of the Advent notebook computer?
  23. more add-ons in the full edition (ex. DirectX, WMI, etc.) than in the lite edition.
  24. this download has been restored on the Microsoft web site as I've recently checked myself. the MS download link and download info page both work again. MS KB article 273826 mentions about IPv6 PR for Win2000.
  25. hi PROBLEMCHYLD. how about adding ATL80.DLL version 8.0.50727.6229 dated 11/15/2011 from KB2716441 of MS12-070 to the 98se service pack? it's contained in a large security update for SQL Server 2012. I'm glad the MSVCRT40.DLL file was reverted back to the Win9x compatible versions since version 3.8 of your 98se SP. Version 5.1.2600.5512 of msvcrt40.dll also broke Win98se's MS System Information Tool (msinfo32.exe), telling me to upgrade Windows version as I've tested myself when I installed 98se SP v3.7. Removed 98se SP v3.7 and installed the newest version of the SP and v4.22.0.0 of MSVCRT40.DLL made 98se's msinfo32.exe program run correctly again.
