  2. "Because Windows <number of latest windows version here> is way better and works perfectly on me compared windows <number of any previous windows version> and you are just scared of new things and move on and wont understand from security at all" that same response been used since windows 98 rolled out with it bloated ie4 desktop and many did not like it as response to peoples who used windows 95, then when win98 and 98se and ME got eol and xp and 2k were more mainstream same started again. Soon 2k neared eol and same started insist to it, then xp eol and same argument started again. Same response been out now over 20 years because newer must be better to some. For most basic users there has not been notable changes in windows since 95, most notable changes are to power users like me. Windows 98 was windows 95 with ie4 and active desktop, Windows ME was rebranded Windows 98 with few ui changes and usb driver and dos mode removed. Windows 2000 was real improved due usb and NTFS. Windows XP was polished Windows 2000 expect improved compability to legacy applications, new management features and few others that mattered me and of course Iiked new themes it could support. Windows vista was originally developed around Server 2003 and had some improvements mostly to 64bit support while remaining decent compability. Windows 7 was polished windows vista sp2 with few under hood changes. Any Windows version after that forgot all good UI design guidelines by forcing beginner mobile ui to desktop pc. Most peoples just believe what Microsoft and media says them from Millions of hackers attacking to every old Windows version out there and also see no issue upgrade since all they do is play few new AAA titles, watch cat videos on chrome and got no legacy apps used. I say best is to ignore them. Lot peoples do not like anything old technology since believe those are bad compared new ones. I am using oldshcool nokia phone from 2003 (6600) and peoples think it is stupid and insecure and how hackers will hijack it but I do not care. It can make calls and got 40.3kbp/s mobile data incase need plus can swap battery myself (unlike on new ones). Same said from me running windows 7 and xp instead of "teh latest and greatest windows 10" but I use it anyway since can do all type of modern things on it thanks to this board and it developers (newmoon, mailnews etc.). Someday peoples will hopefully realise the facts on that newer is not always better

  3. Diy DVR is best thing can do to record tv shows. No vendor lock, easy storage upgrade and unlimited possibilities I tried on vista x64 and no errors. I wanted support developer who wont just artificially block software from running totally (winpe header change for example) and dvbviewer was only to XP that could support happauge IR remotes. Happauge blocked use of tuner on older Windows version by altering hwid a bit and removing info from XP support from their site. I emailed company asking if it did support since few of their pages said Windows XP supported. Got response never been tested or supported. Support person did not even read my email. I got it working by altering driver file to match tuner (Happauge WinTV solohd) id on Happauge driver version 5.2015.1030.34035. Same method worked to Windows Vista which was "never supported" either according them. Luckily Elisa which is my cable operator in finland offers proper guide data to me

  4. Saying I do not need any protection on pc since never got hacked or viruses is like saying wont need seatbelts on car since never driven crash. Both of those can happen and if prepared will minimise damage

  7. I see on many, many forums, such as r/windows, the Microsoft discord and even the Linus Tech Tips forums where people mention using 7 or so nowadays and people lose their minds, breaking out in cyber arguments about if its a good or bad idea to keep using them. So I have a question. Why do so many people just have problems about older operating systems? As well as that, how many real-people would actually say if 7 or 10 is better? Most of my family says 7 is a lot better. Even a lot of my friends say 7 is better than 10.

  8. - Windows NT 5.x family windowsupdate.com links for available languages, including all (any?) Custom Support Updates - The updates links are grouped for each build, slightly sorted, and ordered lexicographically per update number or file name as possible - Superseded (replaced) updates are not filtered or excluded - The dump is available as csv files containing updates name and url, or plain text files containing updates url - It's recommended to use CSVFileView to check the csv files https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/csv_file_view.html - You can filter or extract updates for certain language using findstr (Vista or 7) e.g. findstr /i \-enu NT_5.2.3790-x64-Custom.csv > NT_5.2.3790-x64-Custom-enu.csv however, few update have different language identifier or none, so it's best to review the whole file first - NT_5.1.2600-x86-SP2-Custom and NT_5.1.2600-x86-SP2-Custom-IE are ment for the EOS Windows XP SP2 x86 only - NT5-ia64 is for Itanium-based Server 2003 / Windows XP - .NET Framework packs and updates for NT 5.1/5.2 are in a separate list files, likewise Windows Media Player and some eXtra updates # P.S. Maybe it's best not to post the links explicitly in the forum replies or text sites (pastebin, txtuploader..), and share them in the txt/csv files # Download https://gitlab.com/stdout12/adns/uploads/9ca06a12dd08c06edd889e65afa637fa/NT5_WU_URLs_csv.7z https://gitlab.com/stdout12/adns/uploads/33fcfd0b0f6c1a0cb74472cb8407800d/NT5_WU_URLs_txt.7z

  9. With NextPVR, it was newer .NET requirements that left XP behind (and eventually Vista too: current 5.x cross-platform versions require .NET Core.) Sorry to hear about difficulties with Hauppauge drivers. Note to self: Do not attempt to update driver!

  10. DVBViewer Pro (view IPTV or TV trough tuner card on computer) latest version (7.0.2.0 in writing this) still works on xp with one tweak. On startup you will get error from bcrypt.dll missing but it will start just fine. Bcrypt.dll was on vista and newer. To get around in delete libssl-1_1.dll and libcrypto-1_1.dll on DVBViewer directory and it will fallback to older mehtod (not fully sure which). All features (Weather, RSS, Capture TV, tuning, IR remote control, games) seems work fine. Only thing I cannot say is if CI card used to paid channels works on latest since wont have one. Update: download this and replace libssl-1_1.dll and libcrypto-1_1.dll on DVBViewer directory. Those are XP compatible versions of files and All dvbviewer online features (addon downloader, weather, rss feeds) works without issue. Thanks to @VistaLover for the tip

  11. I agree completely - many thanks to MSFN and developers like @roytam1 (as well as other developers here) that work hard at what they do PS: I also use an old LG Flip Phone and I've no intention to buy a smart phone.

  13. Brainwashed ... Or just going with the crowd . I know a guy , who works in IT (coding and scripting, to be precise) . He is kinda good at this , I mean really , no jokes . But he says Win 10 is OK . It puzzles me. Also , he says Win 7 is utter junk . Doesn't say anything about Vista , never tried , he is young. No older than 28. To answer the second part , I tried to like Win-7 , it was hugely popular (which is a very bad sign , actually ! A bad omen xD ). Win 7 just doesn't render as good as Vista . CPU utilisation is lower with 7 . Why ? I feel like Win-7 simply caps the programmes , it is slower at start , it writes/reads too much data to HDD , hence SDDs became that popular . So I'm sorry , but I do not share your satisfaction with WIn 7 . I even think Win-7 is a project to boost SDD sales. I have much better FPS with the same drivers with almost all DX9 - DX11 games on Vista . Maybe they (people you talk about) tried to compare win7 and win10 and got better FPS , I dunno. Visually Win8/10 are ugly as hell , I agree. So my answer will be : win7 is bad , but don't know how much worse than win 10, or who is worse between the two bad . OK ? P.S. Perhaps you have some real tests to compare Win7-Win10 on the same hardware ? Rendering , games , etc. As for me , I woudn't even touch it ! Even if it will render something faster (I doubt that , though).

  14. Thanks for the heads-up! If you (or anyone else) can't wait until the (patched) version 3.0.13 is officially released, VideoLan provide VLC 3 automated nightly builds, where, hopefully, the exploit has been patched already ; latest (as of this writing) 3.0.13-dev-win32 build can be downloaded from: https://artifacts.videolan.org/vlc-3.0/nightly-win32/20210417-0625/ binaries repo: https://artifacts.videolan.org/vlc-3.0/nightly-win32/ Best wishes

  15. A bit late reporting this time, but a cornucopia of no less than seven Office 2010 updates this month. To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of the End of Life of Office 2010 have obviously been greatly exaggerated! 17. I use the NewMoon 27 SSE builds by Roy. It's not that the font is too huge ( i actually increase most font sizes for easier reading from distance), i just thought that making the pinned topics smaller when wrapped by your script would look better and reduce the need for scrolling.

  20. Great, thanks for confirming! :-) If the forum shows up for you with completely messy vertical whitespace and huge font, nearly unusable, that sounds like you use a slightly older browser too? Yeah I had struggled ENDLESSLY with that mess too after the last forum-downgrade, with mine being especially ancient. But had finally figured a few css-tricks, posted here: https://msfn.org/board/topic/182251-old-browsers-ips-forum-layout-bugs-self-help-tweaks-css/ Have a look, there are solutions for several crucial msfn layout probs since the last layout downgrade desaster. Especially the HUGE FONT prob can probably most easily be fixed by our site admin, by simply replacing a font size defined in REM unit with a normal PX size, which can hardly be a prob considering all other fontsizes are px anyway (he added it at end of xxx_custom.css) Luckily this can also be fixed in a user CSS, details in link above. .

  22. siria, it works, yay! I have wondered before why so many bookmarklets were written as functions, so that must be it. Is there an easy way to also vertically shrink the wrapped topics? Like, minimize the white space and/or reduce the fonts? --- Dave-H, +1 --- Hey, i really wanted to see them sinking for couple days... Anyways, too late now.

  23. In Wilders' forum there are 49 pages about this AV, with interventions also from the developer. Some experienced users, such as cruelsister, I can guarantee you that he is of the highest reliability, make similar interventions: Cruelsister wrote: more info: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/wisevector-stop-x.431502/page-49

  24. Here's my take on it. I agree that too many stickies in a forum can get cluttered and look unorganized. So if it were me, I would go through some of that information and make a good one stop thread with links to all of these important articles, sort of like what I did with the Windows 9x forum. So make a sticky with all these links and unpin some of the less important ones. Or we could create a subforum within the Windows XP forum and move all of the important topics/references in there so that way they're easier to find, but leave it so only mods and above can make any post or topic in there. It would be more like an archive. But we don't want people just posting in there randomly and creating more fluff to bury other topics. But that's just my two cents on it.

  25. Okay, I understand fully that you need Office 2013+, but not me. When my Office 2010 becomes completely obsolete (which is certainly not going to happen in the next 5 years), I will embrace LibreOffice and will never touch newer versions of MS Office. Who needs Movie Maker when there is Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, etc.etc.? It's too basic. OneDrive can be used in a web browser. Other than that, I agree, MS messed up Vista support for apps and made sure to frighten many legacy Windows users, but we at MSFN have not fallen prey to their intimidation techniques.

  26. To each their own, but since you bring it up and seem to be requesting feedback -- my feedback is this, I DON'T GIVE A RATS ARSE ABOUT "UPDATES". The very FIRST thing I do whenever I install ANY operating systems is to DISABLE UPDATES !!! !!! !!! However, I do SLIPSTREAM updates before every installation - so I do "update". And one of the things I *LOVE* about Win XP is that I don't have to WASTE THE TIME slipstreaming MORE updates. I stopped slipstreaming and patching SO-CALLED "risks" in June 2017 on this computer (WinXP x64) and in January 2018 on my SIX computers running WinXP x86. I do NOT run antivirus - haven't for a good 15 years or so. If you know "how" to use a computer and know when to click and when not to click and if you do NOT let your software "phone home" and if you only allow WHITELISTED javascript, then "you'll do just fine". And make sure your hardware firewall (I also no longer waste my time with software firewalls) is set up properly. "You'll do just fine". WITHOUT concerning yourself with HYPOTHETICAL "so-called" 'security risks' propegated by an industry perpetuated as "needed" only when you allow 12 year olds to install "games" or when grandma installs some "coupon app". But anywhoo...

  28. Starting with Catalyst 14.4, AMD officially dropped Windows 8.0 support, and nobody really cared to make a proper guide on how to mod the drivers to work on NT 6.2. Well, I'm here to show you how you can install the full AMD package, complete with the Crimson Control Panel, HDMI audio, Vulkan, Mantle, ACP Audio (that thing AMD advertised way back when they announced GCN, TrueAudio)... you get the jist. 1. Download the drivers you need from the AMD website, Windows 7 version. Extract the exe files into a folder (I use 7-Zip) 2. The video drivers will install without any modification, because the INF file only specifies NT 6.1 (although that does not mean you will be restricted to WDDM 1.1. More on that later), but the HDMI INF file has to be modded, because it has lines in there that block the install on anything that's not NT 6.1. Assuming you are already on the folder with the extracted drivers, go to Packages\Drivers\WDM\HDMI\W764A and open the INF file. In there delete the line that says: [AMD.NTamd64.6.2] and modify the line that has all the hardware IDs below it: [AMD.NTamd64.6.1] > [AMD.NTamd64.6.2] Save the INF file. 3. Now the drivers are ready for install. If you're running a 64 bit system you will need to follow the following steps: 3a. Go to the Charms bar, go to the cogwheel symbol and click on the power button, now keep pressing the Shift key and click Restart. This will bring up the Troubleshoot menu. Click Troubleshoot and go to Advanced Options. In there click Startup Settings, and let the system restart. Upon restart you will be greeted by a menu with a bunch of options. We want the Disable Driver signature enforcement. Press 7 or F7 on your keyboard, and you'll be able to install the modded drivers. 4. Right click on the exe on the main driver directory, click compatibility and choose Windows 7. This will fool the installer and prevent it from saying "Unsuported OS". Next install the driver as you normally would. The only difference is this little popup, where you will allow it to install (Yes, I was using Windows 10 for some screenshots) 5. After the install is done, reboot the system, and you should have the full suite of AMD drivers working on your NT 6.2 OS of choice. A few things to note: - If you try to uninstall the drivers normally, it will say "Unsuported OS" and quit. One workaround is keeping that window open, go to Task Manager, find the location of the exe and put it in compatibility mode for "Windows 7", and run the uninstaller again (the same thing we did for the setup file, basically) - The Video Tab of Crimson does not appear to be working... It appears as a blank page. I've seen it working, so I'm not sure if it appears after a few restarts, or if it depends on the way you install the drivers. I'll try to look into this. - Despite the drivers having NT 6.1 on the Card INF file, it fully works on WDDM 1.2 and not Windows 7's WDDM 1.1, which means all the advantages of NT 6.2's WDDM are present. Hope this helps anybody on Windows 8.0 with an AMD card, such as myself
