  1. ... Well, "Dwm" stands for Desktop Window Manager, and that one is only present on Vista+...

  3. Nope, because whomever it was bragged about his 100th post. Then somebody pointed out that it only took THREE DAYS. My guess is that moderators stepped in, "warned him", and he voluntarily abandoned MSFN after the "warning". Who knows, as I wasn't here 20 years ago.

  9. The last version adwcleaner for XP is 6.047 (2017-05-19) https://download.toolslib.net/download/file/1/851?s=gP7VLih67fmmhqhqfLTpmYQR0FtB2J4p and it does not have a cloud version. In 7.4.2 before to see the error message in user32.dll I had to download and attach the dwmapi.dll v. 6.0.5384.4 to executable file.

  10. This article below by MB: https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039579393-Windows-XP-and-Vista-compatibility-with-Malwarebytes-AdwCleaner hints that "Versions before 8.0 may still work on a Windows XP", emphasis (mine ) put on "may"... FWIW, I have local records kept that indicate that the XP_EoS version of Malwarebytes AdwCleaner is/was v6.047 : There doesn't exist a GUI button to update the "database", only an "option" to use the "local" or the "server" one: I did perform a quick scan with the default setting of "server"; I had to open the log file to, sadly, find out that only the extremely outdated "local" database was used for the scan: # AdwCleaner v6.047 - Logfile created 26/04/2023 at 00:25:03 # Updated on 19/05/2017 by Malwarebytes # Database : 2017-05-19.1 [Local] # Operating System : Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium Service Pack 2 (X86) # Username : (redacted) # Running from : (redacted)\adwcleaner_6.047[XPEOL].exe # Mode: Scan # Support : https://www.malwarebytes.com/support I don't have an XP machine available currently to check whether v7.4.2 does, indeed, launch there ; that version does launch under Vista SP2 x86 - incidentally, it offers to update the app to v8.4.0, but that offer should be declined, as (consistent with the article I linked above) that one doesn't launch under Vista (so why offer it in the first place? ) ... Like its predecessor, v7.4.2 has a default setting of "Automatically using the cloud database if available": I performed a second scan with v7.4.2, its log file now reads that it used a "database" from Oct 10th 2022, i.e. a stale one from 6 1/2 months ago (!) : # ------------------------------- # Malwarebytes AdwCleaner 7.4.2.0 # ------------------------------- # Build: 10-21-2019 # Database: 2022-10-10.1 (Cloud) # Support: https://www.malwarebytes.com/support # # ------------------------------- # Mode: Scan # ------------------------------- # Start: 04-26-2023 # Duration: 00:00:35 # OS: Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium # Scanned: 32074 So, I don't know what to make of that , certainly can't answer whether that is considered as "definitions still provided for it" ; "use at your own risk" would be my advice ...

  12. Well in about a week and a half, Patch Tuesday arrives sans any updates for Windows 8 (as support ran out for the OS on the 12th of January). So after running System Restore, I will be running WSUS Offline and downloading February's updates for Server 2012. I'll check the bulletins for each patch and see which of the patches do not relate to server-specific code, and attempt running those. If my system updates successfully, great. I have unofficial support. If not and my system barfs, then I'll return to the last restore point. Then I'll decide if I stay with Windows 8, or go back to Windows Vista for another year (after all, my taxes will be done and I won't need any newer OS for another year.) I'll keep you posted on what happens. I may need to patch/edit the update.inf file somehow, but I'm not sure yet. This will be the first time that a Windows NT 6x based OS runs out of support, to try this experiment, so I'm eager to see what happens. Here's Greenhillmaniacs Repository of Server 2012 Patches that are Suitable for Windows 8 https://mega.nz/#F!ExhDEbDA!pUhzXKVp5-hgzvylW_btfQ

  15. Ha, I'm ashamed to admit that I've been sleeping an average of 10 hours a night lately! I make myself feel bad by saying that I'm wasting time that I should be actively living! I have already resolved to get up earlier, 2 hours earlier... we'll see.

  18. I propose a 4th (the category of which I fall within) - 4) Your topics are read by the majority herein but replying only perpetuates the stigma of MSFN's transformation from what people claim it used to be, a claimed existence which predates my membership herein and I have never witnessed any strict adherence towards in any "topical" forum I've ever been a member thereof. Tangents and off-topics are always always always present on all all all "topical" forums. Something like that...

  19. You are welcome. There are several possible interpretations to the lack of interest you noticed: 1) your topics are not interesting 2) your topics are interesting (generally speaking) but not appreciated by MSFN members (because of their narrow minds) 3) your topics are interesting and lots of people on MSFN actually like them secretly, but fear that explicitly showing their interest in them will expose them to retaliations of some kind (only as an example targeted EMP attacks) Hard to say which one is more plausible, I would personally think #1, but that is just like my opinion. jaclaz

  21. Do we really need to see on MSFN this survivalist/conspirationist/apocalyptic crap? <- this is a rhetoric question, the answer is NO. msfntor, it is already tiring to see all the meaningless, non techinical crap you post on this (supposedly technical) board every single §@ç#ing day, often many times each day, but this is too much. Mind you, you are perfectly free to insist on this as much as you want, but at least you now know how at least one MSFN user is fed up with this senseless garbage. jaclaz

  23. Thanks for your investigation ; https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Classes/Public_class_fields#browser_compatibility says that this JS syntax feature has been implemented in Chr72+/Fx69+ (so, a long time ago ); "upstream" now have an open UXP issue about it, opened just 2 months ago by @martok (the maintainer of palefill): https://repo.palemoon.org/MoonchildProductions/UXP/issues/2142 This is being worked on currently, so, fingers crossed, "we" may see a positive outcome/resolution soon-ish ... Slightly OT: I was puzzled by the fact my 360EEv11 copy, Chr69-based, was able to display images inside https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/disable-full-row-select-explorer-windows-7/ since the "feature" was only implemented as of Chr72, but then I realised I had, since long ago, enabled the "Experimental JavaScript" flag in that build (chrome://flags/#enable-javascript-harmony); mystery solved, as that flag enables a "draft" version of public class fields already in Chr69!

  24. ... Still, someone on XP will have to verify whether v7.4.2 does launch there (and was hoping you'd be the one ...) ; and just because it did download the 2022-10-10.1 (cloud) database in my Vista SP2 32-bit machine, it doesn't necessarily mean it will do so under XP; AFAICT, the app uses Windows' native APIs to connect to its (cloud) server; my Vista OS has WS2008 updates installed, which gave it TLS v1.1+v1.2 support, plus associated cipher suites that are not present even in a POSReady updated XP machine... As always, "the proof is in the pudding" ...

  26. This thread is about antivirus programs targeting Windows XP SP3 only. Posting a list of antivirus programs targeting Windows Vista is not really helpful and rather misleading. There are a lot of versions inside this list which won't work under Windows XP SP3. Anyway!I know this list but it doesn't belong here. At least, you should change the headline to "AntiVirus & Security Software for Windows Vista". To answer your question, Malwarebytes Free v3.5.1 should serve perfectly your needs. I use Malwarebytes Premium v3.5.1 under Windows XP. It is the last version for Windows XP but still receives definition updates. Its detection rate is very good. Only the premium version has a background guard.

  27. Do you mean Serpent by sp52? There are two configuration setting for moving the disk cache in Serpent. I would still want the rest of my profile to be on disk. browser.cache.disk.parent_directory browser.cache.offline.parent_directory I think 360Chrome accepts a command-line parameter for this. But I don't use 360Chome. --disk-cache-dir

  28. Read again (or try implementing it): only one (hardly at all most) of the three tools I mentioned show there is no swap, and it is the very basic dos tool used to create the swapfile in the first place. The existence of this phanthom swapfile is picked up (other than by the tool used to create it) in most usual situations, by at leat two common (and relative to XP, sophisticated) apps. Once you prove that (or disprove it , who knows, I aint Elon Musk, or what have you, but a pewr lil fella), tell me how to make the profiles of sp52 and 360chrome to run out of that you don't care to try to see really exists (or not). But test it and prove it first.

  30. But does this guarantee that they are not communists? Computeruniverse is (from their about page): https://www.computeruniverse.net/en/page/cuinfo a German company with office in Friedrichsdorf, but founded in Bad Homburg and later moved in Friedberg, since 2006 became part of Burda Consumer Tech Group, so I would say "very" German, but that is just the shop. What you seem to be missing is that DeLock is a brand, not a manufacturer: https://www.delock.com/delock/index.html Essentially what they do is either find (good) existing products on the international market and brand them or find (again internationally) reliable manufacturers and have them produce with their brand particular items. The (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot) markup you pay for their products is mostly about their ability in choosing good products and testing them before reselling them under their brand (for the more common items) and for (AFAIK very good) support (and extended warranty on many items, declarations of conformity). Only to give you an example, do you believe this: https://www.delock.de/produkt/62966/merkmale.html?g=1449 to be very different from these: https://www.sybausa.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=933 http://www.iocrest.com/index.php?id=2162 jaclaz

  33. I can easily reproduce in my (latest) St52 (32-bit) copy here ; on ebay.de, crazy CPU consumption lessens somewhat if I "pause" the main/centre "carousel"; but commerzbank.de will fry both my CPU cores at a constant rate of 97-100% ; after a short while, the whole, single-process, browser becomes unresponsive and has to be killed via Task Manager (and upon relaunch, you are "greeted" with the "session restore" message, if you have that enabled...); their whole web design is dire BTW , endlessly-scrolling with embedded videos in between, typical of the web design of the era that mainly targets handheld mobile devices with vertical screens ...

  34. 7.4 is the same as 7.6 with AllowAnySSL key. It's only that I didn't want to use a patched version. The wuredir key forces Windows Update to download the correct wuredir.cab (XP's one has the old www.update.microsoft.com which doesn't work) but this method breaks Automatic Updates and doesn't work in Vista (error related to wuident.cab SHA-2-only signature). That's why I prefer setting the correct URLs in the proxy

  35. You have to add ?g_sconsumersite=1 after aspx to open the website. But scanning won't work unless you apply redirects (patching wuaueng and registry or using another proxy). If you run my installer (any Windows) or the one in the 1st post (XP only) you'll have everything working

  39. Hmm, just because you can't download it... I wonder if you got your hands on it, would it install anyway? Then the next wonder would be if it is an installer issue, if you could get around that could it be forced? Maybe not, but still... Hey, at least you shouldn't be harassed to update to Windows 10, since your system won't even run Windows 8.1. Cheers and Regards

  40. Nope! Won't even bring up a download page. Just says that the Windows 7 version of IE 11 is not compatible with your system. Keep in mind that the original Server 2012 is only supporting IE 10 as well.

  41. You may get the v11 update, now that you know the KB, from the MS Update Catalog... Search for "2012" or perhaps "Server", then sort by "latest first", by clicking on the release date column header. Try it, and let me know.

  42. And I guess you're covered till Jan 10, 2023 !!! Yes it's what it seems. Now I'll use this thread for month to month results, and see how it goes from there. Even the IE updates go through. And v10, also not as good as 11, still browses most sites (should I need to use it ever)

  44. Well I got home later than I anticipated, but ran System Restore to create a Restore Point. Then I downloaded six updates (five for Windows Server 2012, and one for Internet Explorer 10). I had shut off the Windows Update service and had cleared the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder on a previous occasion, so I started the service and let the folder populate. Then I manually installed all of the updates one by one. (KB3115858, KB3123294, KB3126593, KB3126587 and KB3124280, plus KB3134814 for IE10) Now I had removed IE10 from my system (and even deleted the disk payload for the feature using the DISM command), but I thought perhaps that the IE update would improve security in the IE engine files that may still reside on the system. All updates installed without incident. Now to reboot. Be right back ...

  45. Server 2012 has the Aero Lite theme of 8 by default, but you should be able to change to the normal Aero theme of 8 in Personalization. I changed to a custom Vista theme for Windows 8, which works perfect. For all of those bells and whistles of the Aero theme, you can just go to the advanced system settings and change performance settings in there. Of course, for features like Media Player, you still need to install Desktop Experience, along with WLAN Service and .NET Framework 3.5 to get some apps to install and work.

  46. What do you need to customize in Server 2012? I remember with Server 2003, I had to enable Media Player and Internet connectivity if I wanted to even browse.. I adjusted RAM for programs vs cache. Does it come with the main Windows 8 desktop, or is it like "Classic"?

  47. I'll certainly let you know what happens.

  48. I would really like to hear so, since Windows 8 is just easier to setup for desktop use than Server 2012, lol. I do have Server 2012 running in my home laptop though, and it's perfect. DWM feels smoother in NT 6.2 than 6.3 with the glass8 mod, that's why I'll leave 2012 R2 and completely migrate to R1 in the home computer.
