Basically, when wanting to install the updates required for extended kernel, I just follow TSNH's guide (the "Preparations:" section, from 3. to 6.). Works everytime.

How to install Office 2016 on Windows Vista 1- Your copy of Vista must be 64-bit, as well as having all the updates up to April 2017 + kb4474419 + kb4493730, plus the latest version of the extended kernel. 2- Have a copy of Office 2016 64-bit handy (The RTM version of July 2015 is needed, since it has an MSI installer like Office 2013, since the following versions use the current installer, which does not work at the moment) 3- Copy to the desktop in a new folder the root of your copy of Office 2016 4- Copy the ProPlus.WW.en-US folder to the desktop (the name may vary due to the language/edition of the copy), this is important since the Office installer detects the edited files and the installer of this folder needs to be edited. 5- In the folder copied to the desktop open ProPlus.WW.msi with Orca, go to InstallExecuteSequence and remove AbortMsi (it blocks the installation outside of setup.exe that verifies the files), then in Components change all Conditional VersionNT >= 601 by VersionNT >= 600. 6- Replace gdiplus.dll with the one from Windows 7, this is the path in the system: c:\windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft.windows.gdiplus_6595b64144ccf1df_1.0.6002.19749_none_56a723b1b598503f\GDIPLUS.DLL 7- In group policies of the local machine, it prohibits rollback (very important) 8- Create an osver.ini file with the following settings (required at all times when installing Office 2016): [global] MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 8- Open ProPlus.WW.msi and after installation the Office 2016 suite should appear in the start menu, but it is not enough! 9- Go back to group policies and disable rollback, but keep osver.ini 10- In the root folder of Office 2016 the only change we will make is to delete the update or updates folder, they cause bugs when installed 11- Open the setup.exe of the normal Office 2016 installer and customize it to your liking (it should install successfully, if an error appears, reboot the system) 12- Replace outlook.exe with this one: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B2PcraGfa0p3yBIGTF19-04vI0dwbFMh/view?usp=drive_link. Fast-forward to 2023 and they go out of their way to keep THEIR anti-virus running at all times if they can, they even deprecated the group policy to disable it which is now considered unsupported and isn't effective. Windows 11 is all about hooking you on Microsoft's services. Supposedly Windows Defender Antivirus (or whatever they call it these days) still disables itself if you install another, but I'm not interested in adopting Windows 11 at this point or running any anti-virus. Haven't used one in over a decade and somehow I survived. Maybe we need a thread about surviving on the modern internet without an antivirus? There are articles suggesting using an anti-virus even on Android smartphones. I use an old version that's supposedly full of holes, been using that thing to interact with my bank and I even logged into the bank couple times in 2020-2021 on an XP x64 installation that is mostly patched to whatever was current in 2011. Nothing bad happened, although it's annoying that you have to use either Android app or Win10 app for 2FA if you even want to login to it on the computer. But the app on the phone alone is somehow secure... I considered changing bank, but I found nothing else of value that would justify bothering with it.

NM28 behaves fine, because it uses the (old) TychoAM those commits target, but "our" Serpent 52.9.0 (unlike the official Basilisk 52.x.x.x) still uses the WebExtensions AM and thus broke ; so, those commits would either have to be reverted for St52 or somehow modified to accommodate St52's WE AM ... Thanks in advance for any fix for this (going back to previous build of St52 as things stand ) ...

Didn't you say in the other thread you're going to update the post with 7-Zip? The current version is 23.01. 7-Zip has a close sibling 7-Zip ZS (Made in Germany), it supports wider range of compression algorithms. It can make archives that plain 7-Zip won't unpack. Last time I checked, which must have been over a year ago, it didn't run on XP. The file manager opens, but it can't open any archive. It seems to run fine on Vista though.

That worked perfectly. Had to deoptimize omni.ja first to make the change but that fixed it.

Personally I wouldn't use Winiso (or any other of the "advanced/automagic" tools to recreate the .iso, let alone a "writing to .iso tool". "Iso writing" may or may not work, of the two I would prefer rebuilding the whole .iso from "source". But if you are using <some way> to mount the .iso stored on a USB thumb drive, and not actually burning it to a CD/DVD and booting from it, it is possible that the little quirks/artifacts that a writing to .iso tool may create would be irrelevant, i.e. it is possible that you can recreate a .iso which is good enough for your use but that may fail if used to burn a CD. I would be curious to know what happens with yours (corrupted) compressed files when you expand them manually. A "normal" XP should have the command line EXTRACT[1] (in Vista and later should have become EXPAND) program, but also 7-zip should be able to expand the compressed files . While expanding you might have some errors, or it may succeed to create the expanded file, in this latter case (since you have another copy of the original expanded file) it would be interesting if there are differences. It is possible (improbable but possible) that your .iso image corruption is not at file level, but somewhere else, and while you can get the file from the mounted .iso, the setup when it is running somehow fails in retrieving it. jaclaz [1] Sometimes as EXTRAC32.EXE, or you may need to find the "support tools" if you want the MS original: https://msfn.org/board/topic/24670-windows-xp-service-pack-2-support-tools/

Yes, most files in a XP .iso are compressed. The program(s) used to compress them are COMPRESS and MAKECAB (and possibly also CABARC). I would try to use first compress (the version that is in the Windows 2003 Resource Kit which can be found on archive.org): https://ss64.com/nt/compress.html You need of course exactly the same version of the files (both the compressor and the actual file to be compressed) so that the compressed file is exactly the same size of the original. Then it is relatively easy to replace the files (actually the bytes representing the files to be replaced) on the .iso image, it is not straightforward, but on a .iso all files should be contiguous so it should be just a matter of locating the position of the file inside the ,iso image and then overwrite with dd or similar the appropriate extent. It has to be checked but either DMDE or ISOBUSTER should be capable of doing this. Otherwise (if you actually need the .iso file) you will need to rebuild the .iso (using either CDIMAGE or MKISOFS) and this may be more difficult (both utilities have lots of settings that need to be used correctly), but it is of course doable. I don't want to put you down in any way, but if you have some corruption in the files, there may be other corruption in other files that you simply couldn't notice because (due to the errors you had) you did not go far enough in the install, so it might take more time and effort than what you may expect. jaclaz

This thread is typically too "defensive" to want to participate. But the only thought I have is this - what antivirus product out there does NOT have a service running 24/7 and what antivirus product out there does NOT "collect data" from its users? My perception has always been that they *ALL DO*. The line in the consumer-sand is generally NOT that data is collected, but rather that the data is then SOLD to other companies.

To me, it seems to be more of a lifestyle philosophy. The only people I've ever met that think running XP is "stupid" are people that upgrade their mobile phones once or twice a year. They have to have the "latest and greatest" and are too blind to see that mindset being why they live paycheck to paycheck and have no savings of any kind.

That's one thing I do like about this forum. What I don't like, and apparently MSFN is the kind of forum that attracts certain kinds of unpleasant folks (especially in recent years) and as such need such rules in place. I know one highly technical forum out there where you can eg. talk about Ukraine in off-topic and not only no forum user complains about off-topic on a technical forum, they don't need rules in place prohibiting politics talk. Though that forum is much more active than MSFN, even though they have cca. 25k less users in the database than MSFN. Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe motorists are just more pleasant folks than computerists? I still bet on the former. One member here recently said something along the lines you can't really have normal conversation on this new MSFN anymore and I tend to agree, but it seems to go way beyond MSFN, it's more like new world. Regarding tire pressure, I suspected smaller differences from the recommended don't make much of a difference in the grand scheme. I wonder though, one mechanic I know about, he thinks "2.4 bar is enough for you since you drive alone and don't carry any luggage". The sticker says 2.5 bar on both front/back and 2.7 on the back if car is loaded with more people + luggage. I guess most would say 0.1 bar doesn't matter anyway. Then there's also factor of wear and tear, which may be uneven with non-optimal pressure. But when it comes to small differences, I imagine tire naturally deteriorates with time that you need to replace anyway before it would get bad due to use, except maybe if you drive a lot. I'd need about 2 decades to get to 200000 km with current needs, then you look at used cars for sale and some have over 300000 km when they're just 5 years old. I learned in recent times tires leave small bits of themselves on the road. Also watched the documentary that said sea levels may rise quite a lot in the following decades. My personal favourite was WU v3.1, I vaguely remember the last day it was online, I visited it and got an endlessly looping refresh and low and behold it was gone. I do remember visiting site back in 2009, using it to apply updates to SBS 4.5 setup I had, well it turns out I have some left over files with original MS timestamps. The wuhistv log file time stamp is the original date I ran Windows Update. I think I copied these as it applied the updates since it would delete them once it finished the process if I'm remembering correctly. I used the R1201 folder and changed it to R1150, the files I have give different results. My VM is running NT4 SP6a, Q249863, Q252463 with IE5.5 and Office XP with no SPs. Is anyone else having the problem where all the permissions get screwed up? I am unable to run anything as admin and several features are broken. Only way to fix it is to boot into safe mode and run SFC /scannow which puts my OS back into a usable state. I am using a fully updated Windows Vista SP2 X64.

I just tested Spybot - Search & Destroy version 1.6.2 @AstroSkipper Unfortunately up to version 2 it is not possible to update the database. Until 1.6.2 you had to update the entire program. Sorry.

It's also the decreased diameter of the under-inflated tire and the engine rpm relative to the transmission rpm relative to the tire rpm. Unsure which has a greater effect. Bike owners (be it mountain bike, skooter, or motorcycle) can attest to how much more leg power is needed to peddle on under-inflated tires or push-reverse a motorized motorcycle on under-inflated tires.

First, I have to LOL that a thread from 2005 is on the active threads list. Allowed, of course, just LOL. According to here ( https://www.freewayinsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/fact-or-myth-over-inflating-your-tires-increases-gas-mileage/ ), the decrease in fuel efficiency is 0.4% per 1-psi of under-inflation. After reading several articles that aren't exactly DETAILED enough for the SCIENTIFIC MIND, this 0.4% seems to be when ALL FOUR TIRES are under-inflated 1-psi. Anybody and everybody that has ever owned a vehicle knows that all four tires don't miraculously under-inflate symmetrically across all four. Even if they did, how can any vehicle owner NOT "notice" all four tires being "half flat"? 32 to 40 psi is typical for a passenger car. Let's run with 36. Now deflate all four tires to 18 psi - HALF FLAT. Foreget that this level of under-inflation is visible to anybody over the age of FOUR, let's drive on those HALF FLAT tires anyway. At 0.4% per 1-psi, that 18 psi under-inflation affects our fuel efficiency by 7.2%. Not to underestimate, that is a big number. Per here ( https://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/annual/showtext.php?t=pTB0208 ), a light duty vehicle is around 22 mpg in 2005. According to here ( https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/11/general-motors-vehicles-averaged-23-mpg-in-2020/ ), the INDUSTRY average was 25 mpg in 2020 (GM's was 23, Honda's was 29). 25 mpg with a 7.2% loss brings us down to 23. What percentage of people are "blind enough" to be driving around in a car with HALF FLAT ALL FOURS? Just saying, this 2 mpg loss by such a tiny portion of the driving population isn't exactly going to "save the planet" from the doom and gloom the environmentalists forecast.

Even though I have a clear and incontrovertible opinion of Norton, there may well be others who prefer software that makes every decision for them. All I can say is: to each their own! And of course the population is larger in the USA (than in the UK), but the English language was only imported. It originated somewhere else. But honestly, I mix British and American English very often, rather unconsciously. Don't forget, I am not a native English speaker, either!

You have to follow the instructions in my manual inside the archive. If Proxy's PopMenu doesn't show icons, and the menu items don't work, then it is not properly installed. You have to start the executable Configure PopMenu.exe first to set up Proxy's PopMenu. See under the section 7.5 or 9.3.2 (according to the version you are using) of my article ProxHTTPSProxy and HTTPSProxy in Windows XP for future use! A detailed documentation, titled Documentation of ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu 3V1 (or 3V3), can be found in the subfolder Docs of each program package and should be read before using ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu in any case. The installation, all features and more are described there. The process of installation and setting up is actually very easy. In any case, my package has been tested deeply, and it works as described.

Here is the future of Chromium on Windows 7: https://github.com/win32ss/supermium I have been closely tracking the many changes made to Chromium since November 2022, made with the intent of dropping support for Windows 7 and 8.x. As of version 111, it became very difficult to keep the newest versions running on Vista with the extended kernel; shared memory allocation changes made it impossible to do so as subtle changes to the API (which were done in kernel mode) prevented stable operation of the browsers. So I decided to build my own Chromium. I discovered that a further change was made to the shared memory allocation which broke it even further; the successor to mojo, IPCZ, was forced on by default. It only works properly with Windows 8.1+'s shared memory API. I disabled IPCZ for pre-8.1 and this made the sandbox work again on Vista and 7. Perhaps I will see exactly why IPCZ is broken (from the Windows API level) and try to fix it for the next release. The only win32 API link I can find is CreateFileMappingW, which I need to test with an IPCZ-enabled build on both 8 and 8.1 to see what makes it fail.

It has been considered. I would like to do so, and probably will eventually. Development is very slow, but at minimum not "dead". Stay tuned.

Poor lizard ! Though this can't be compared to walking through the walls , lol . Yes , iguanas can do that . You will end up with a hole in your wall or window. Some don't like mirrors as well. UV lamps are not for heating . It's for boosting the appetite , mating instincts and creating vitamins from UV lights (at least igunas can do it). For heating I use warm layouts and ordinary lamps (painted in red). Also , you need to give some time under real sun , esp. during summers . Not much ! Watch out for overheating ! If your lizard's skin is darker than usual , it needs heating and vice versa , very simple. Better to monitor temps with a thermostat . It's usually no more than 28 degrees ambient for Iguanas , I don't know about Geckos . Every lizards has a different set of character , they can also be moody because they are very intelligent .
