I've actually had some form of Linux, mostly Ubuntu, ready besides Windows for several years now, though I only use it occasionally. That issue from last time, well, I've got bit nervous and had to vent. TBH, those weird Windows issues have been rare in recent years. I don't know what happened, but it seems problem isn't even on the computer with the printer as I assumed, but Word from another computer is unable to send document to the shared printer, though I can print from the third computer to the same shared printer. Didn't try printing from Word on that third computer, but printing PDFs from web browser works at least. I don't recall the exact message, I think it was something about the printer setup. I haven't got around checking if other programs on that computer can print, but Windows sees the printer normally. I remember the weirdness with HP Deskjet 3550 that caused the printer to always try to also use color cartridge despite having set to print in greyscale and I think you could also select that you only have black cartridge, but no budge, it always wanted to use empty or non-existent color cartridge, so normal black-white stuff didn't print OK on Windows, but there was no issue on Linux. Newer HP from series 2600 is better, though you at least have to make sure to remove empty color cartridge, otherwise, it may still try to use it.3 points

Agreed! I consider myself quite "frugal" and a bit of a penny-pincher. Some call it "minimalism". I don't buy in excess and I'd rather scrape the mold off of a piece of bread instead of throwing it away. I don't "recycle". I throw garbage away at the curb. Everything thrown into one bin. I don't "sort", if it's trash, I throw it away, all in one bin. But that doesn't make me an environment-killer! How so? Well, it's like this, when the Prius-owner neighbor looks down his nose for me driving a Jeep, I ask him how long a tank of gas lasts him, he says roughly one week, I tell him a tank of gas in my Jeep will last me TWO MONTHS. And I can stretch it into THREE MONTHS. On ONE tank of gas! The PRIUS-owner is "consuming" more dynosaur-oil than I am! My trash is the same way. It takes me FOUR WEEKS to fill up one kitchen-size 13-gallon trash bag. Yet the Prius-owner is carting out two fifty-gallon city-provided bins each and every week, stuffed so full that the lid doesn't even close. And another neighbor looks down her nose at me for throwing aluminum cans into the city bin instead of hauling them to "recycling". She lives paycheck to paycheck and loves the money for recycling. I've watched dear ol' dad recycle his aluminun cans for decades. Five to eight trash bags full at a time. He wouldn't crush them and he'd get $10 to $20 or so for five to eight gigantic trash bags. And mom would always remind him, "We spent more than you got just to drive them here and to buy ant killer because of all the ants they attract."3 points

Thank you for speaking up! Mozilla definitely gets kudos from me for continuing to look out for 7/8.x users! (And you get kudos from me for being persistent in getting a straight answer!) I've been going all over the place with testing OSes...so far so good with Windows 11 on the old HP S5-1020. Didn't think it could be done, but it turns out 11 still supports my PC just fine when the installation hardware requirements are bypassed. Full driver support and everything. It's slightly slower than 10 but is running quite well. So the only limitation I face in the future is if programs start dropping support for the Pentium E6800's full instruction set. I've likely got better odds to win the Florida lottery twice than to have that happen anytime soon, so I'm definitely feeling good about the future. Curious to see what happens with 12...if it's a radical enough departure from 10/11, I'll skip it and stick with 10/11 until the bitter end.3 points

I have to say though, all those things you get used to using one particular OS family for so long, you don't think about it 'till you try something else. Then you realize all those things you take for granted from how file manager, task manager works/looks/feels to how mouse and desktop compositor feels. Might depend on individual, but I'll just stick to the best OS for a particular task, as always have.3 points

Thank you, my friend. Much of what I write might perhaps only makes sense to me and I assume these threads will get less attention anyway now that the forum is back "On Topic" so this gives me more freedom, that is one way to look at it and view it. Got out today for the first time in a few days and it was good but I had to keep my expectations low and try to just not overthink and constantly dissect everything and examine and just try to walk around as I see others do but ain't easy for me at all to do such. Very very hard for me to just take things at face value when I know people have intentions and agendas. K ... everybody is in their own world and I feel far too 'in touch' and 'self aware' than others, or its me, can't tell to be honest. One of the consequences to being a loner and living isolated is that time to ponder and dwell on each and every action and reaction when others *may* not do such or at least they disguise it better than I ... I suspect the latter.2 points

There is no incentive in recycling. In the US, recycling isn't done for the good of the environment, it is done for money. A company holds the rights in a municipality to manage the recycling services. In some cities this company doesn't even do the work, they pick up the recycle bins and truck that stuff off to the landfill.2 points

This is what I have at the time of writing. AFAIK, Malwarebytes have always said that this version will be supported and provided with pattern updates until further notice, and there's been no sign of them moving to change that. There have been a few scares where the definition updates stopped coming in, with a red triangle on the system tray icon, but it was always resolved once people posted on the Malwarebytes forum about it. It was always caused by backend problems, but as you can imagine it did worry people!2 points

I don't know what the heck happened yesterday, but Windows prints today, though I rebooted at least two times yesterday. And TBH, I forgot a lot of trouble with current printer was due to using extension cable, which I used in the past and took a while to pinpoint. Linux somehow had better time communicating using that cable.2 points

Ugh, every once in a while I need a printer and Windows goofed up...again! Just nothing happened when I tried to print, no error, just nothing. I'm so fed up with darned OS corrupting itself in random ways, no matter how careful I am to not goof it up. On Linux, I've been able to print/scan consistently without a single fail. I'm also considering going Linux full-time for normal everyday tasks, maybe keep Windows around for some specifics. I don't need much these days, a web browser, a media player, password manager, maybe a virtualizer and office suite (just for viewing). Just not sure on what distro to settle. I'm sure I don't want rolling-release distro. I'm most familiar with Ubuntu. Edit: Or maybe just more time...2 points

I totally forgot to mention that the impact of system resources by Qihu 360 Total Security Essential 8.8.0.1119 is very low. One hardly notices the presence of this program in the background. And that in my very old, weak system! Additionally, here is the version history of Qihu 360 Total Security Essential: I think I'll keep it on my second system partition for a while or longer. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

I did a short test of Qihu 360 Total Security 10.8.0.1541 on my second system partition. I can't say anything about the quality of its protection, but quite a bit about the installer and what is installed. There is no way to do an individual installation. Particularly annoying is the so-called desktop manager, which is of course installed without being asked and has moved all my icons on the desktop. I don't like this program and can't recommend it. And I miss the main focus on security, but many unnecessary functions instead. Here is a link to a test performed by PCMag: https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/qihoo-360-total-security-86 The results and evaluation are also quite poor, similar to my first impressions.1 point

I see what you mean about the pixelation... Windows Photo Gallery seems to resize images differently depending on your WinSAT score. At least in VirtualBox, setting it to correspond to a score of 3 or above appears to introduce some sort of scaling artefact that causes parts of the image to look blocky and pixelated when viewing large images. It's much more apparent in some images than others, and I probably just hadn't noticed in all this time. I think as @winvispixp said, it's probably a limitation of Windows Photo Gallery. I assume you are running Vista on a physical machine? I don't know if emulated graphics such as that in VirtualBox always plays nicely with this sort of thing, so I don't know if what I am seeing is applicable to other people. I suppose if you want to keep using Windows Photo Gallery and don't care too much for the slideshow transitions, you might be able to try setting the registry value I mentioned to 100 and see if that sorts the pixelation problem? It would also hide the control bar, which might be how you were using it in the past.1 point

I have installed all .Net-Framework packages fronm 1.0 to 4.0 including all security patches in my system. It's not more insecure as Windows XP itself. Truth be told, several programs as for example Panda Dome need .Net-Framework in one of these versions. Without them such programs won't work. So, be aware of this fact when installing new software!1 point

Nobody knows where a malware, virus, trojan or whatever is waiting for them. It always makes sense to build up some protection, especially in an operating system as old as Windows XP. There are only a few antivirus programs left that support Windows XP. Therefore, such a thread here is of particular importance. At least, in my opinion. That's why I share my knowledge and experiences here.1 point
-
This thread sure has a lot of activity. Can't say I can tell from the texts here what makes folks use particular anti-virus. And what does it gain them, I mean, are you encountering viruses on the regular basis? I really don't know, it's been over a decade since I used an anti-virus. Back then it was mostly ESET NOD32 or ESET SmartSecurity. But I was mostly fighting with the anti-virus which liked to prevent certain legitimate executables from running. Besides being bitten by a virus once which was planted on the ClassicShell's official download source (place was hacked into) and which wasn't difficult to recover from, it just overwrote MBR and was supposed to show the message about being pwned when OS was supposed to boot, that part failed on my system and there was just a spade character. I could've avoided running it if I paid attention to the fact that the installer for this software was normally digitally signed. But using signed and unsigned stuff, this just didn't cross my mind back then. Early years after XP release, getting internet connection for the first time, those times were stranger, there was one shared computer at home (who knows what others were clicking), Internet Explorer 6 was used at first and also I was much younger, so can't really say much about back then, I just remember computer had to be formatted in few days after getting the internet connection for the first time.1 point

When I used this online installer last month, it downloaded an offline installer which ended in the version 22.00.00. Due to the forum rules, I am not allowed to provide a download link of my installer. But using Google leads very easy to an offline installer of 22.00.00. Maybe, Panda don't offer it anymore officially or only in Germany. I don't know. Use Google, enter "freeav.exe"22.00.00 and the second entry looks promising! I love crocodiles.1 point

I've been using Malwarebytes Premium on XP for several years now. It's not free, but it just works. Strange how people have very different experiences with these programs on their systems. I never had any problem installing MB Premium on either of my XP systems, but my main desktop absolutely refused to work with Avast or AVG! They would install fine, but the main service refused to start, and I never found out why this was. I too spent ages on their forums and with their technical support, and apart for the vague 'some people do have this problem on XP' no answer was ever found.1 point

Hi everybody, I want to share something I discovered yesterday after days trying different builds between w8.1 (6.3.6900) and w10 rtm (10.0.10240) to get all my drivers working but without the slowness of w10. Warning: - If you have a powerful cpu and a dedicated gpu, with 16gb or 32 gb of RAM you probably don't care about which version of windows 10 you are running and all I'm gonna tell you is not addressed to you. - This is addressed to people who want to get w7 / w8 / w8.1 general OS speed in w10 in a PC / Laptop / Ultrabook / Tablet without a dedicated GPU and also cannot run older windows versions like w7 / w8/ w81 on newer hardware because of drivers or bios incompatibilities, for example. - This is not another post to talk about LTSB 2015/2016, LTSC 2019 or other normal builds like 1809, 1903, 1909... - This post is intended to get the fastest Windows 10 version based on a Windows 10 beta build, which, at the same time, it's based on something between 6.3.9600 and 10.0.10240 but it's compatible and faster on modern hardware. - So this is to get the best possible experience on a nowadays basic hardware: INTEL cpu/gpu + 4GB ram + HDD + no dedicated gpu. WHAT YOU -probably- HAVE TRIED UNTIL now to get the fastest OS as possible: After lot of attempts to get anything different than w10 working on a new laptop, as you know it has lag, it's slow on HDDs, has some Standby Memory issues (at least in 10240 rtm / 1507 ltsb ) which need to be fixed using third party software, and explorer is very slow too. And also in every update you lost your telemetry/privacy config and also you can't full control when updates are installed since 1607.. Of course I tried disabling things like Spectre Meltdown, tools to remove metro immersive shell, tweaking mmcss, tweaking svchost, tweaking Win32PrioritySeparation, multimedia performance values, intelppm (which seems limites the cpu max speed; search about it)... I also tried OldNewExplorer/RibbonDisabler, Winaero tweaker, Ultimate Windows Tweaker, blackviper services, startisback, superfetch off, winxshell... Yes, you can get a decent OS, of course all of this was tried on LTSB 2015 & 2016. But after all these tweaks are applied.. you always thing the same: W.10.W.C.E. (these is a topic about w10 in the forum deciphering these initials). So, after a lot of time tweaking trying to get something decent or similar to w7/w8 experience you ended with less cpu usage and less ram usage but the lag are still here, well, if you have a SSD, you get more or less the same experience you will get in w7 / w8 / w8.1 on a HDD. LONG STORY SHORT: w7 / w8.0 / w8.1 performance on Windows 10: Build 10.0.10074 Yes: - It's compatible with all new hardware supported since 10240. It doesn't have the slow explorer & the GUI lag. - Modern Intel cpus/gpus are supported. It has WDDM 2.0 enabled but in an early version, so it's something between 1.3 & 2.0. All w10 THRESHOLD1 RTM drivers are working on it. - Metro is not as heavy as it is on 10240 RTM probably cause it's not finished. - No lag, and the benefits of the amazing memory management in w10 + Less resource usage. Why this build? - It has some updates (6) available: https://changewindows.org/build/10074/server - The last update (server version) ends with the same number as the RTM mmmmm strange.. isn't it? considering Official RTM is 10.0.10240 --> 10.0.10074.240, yes 240 - As you can see it's updated until SEP 15' (2 months after 10.0.10240 RTM was released), maybe it's possible to install these updates (x64) on client version like @greenhillmaniac does in w8 ( https://msfn.org/board/topic/175105-server-2012-updates-on-windows-8/ ) Other observarions: - When you install server version (Server Technical Preview 2 which is Server 2016 beta build) you can see "Server 2012 R2" strings in some parts of the installation. Server 2012 R2 is based on w8.1 as you know so maybe it's the reason it is, at least, as fast as w7 & w8, but considering the w8.1 metro part it's removed because the w10 metro it's under development, you get something more like w8.0 than w8.1 in terms of resource usage. - You can get a very modular OS if you install the Server version (only 512 mb of RAM in the requirements, I tried and it uses less than this) but I can't get bluetooth working (I know some people changed things in registry to get it working) - As I read somewhere: Startisback 1.0 RC2 (probably 1.0 final ) it's compatible. In case you want to skin the taskbar and increase the buttons size.. - If you try the server version make sure you change your power plan to High Performance since the power plan can affect in different way in server version: powercfg.exe /setactive 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c Problem: - If you don't change your bios date you can't boot it since it's timebombed to 2015 _________________ Believe me, try it and give me your feedback, please.. You won't believe how fast & smooth it is compared to all other w10 versions. Thanks Regards1 point

I also have a problem with HFSLIP... I integrate all updates (also IE6, WMP9, DirectX 9c and MDAC 2.8 SP1), and then I make an ISO (with nLite) to test the CD on a virtual machine. I always get the same error during setup... the message is something like "setup.exe has encountered an error, the installation will terminate here". I think it is something related to Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) because I always get the error during its setup. Up to now, I'll try to remove DTC with nLite to check if the error persist, but I think it's a bug related to DTC updates. Hope I've been useful! And thanks for this very good program1 point
