I'm on the side of natural sciences - but also with some interest for human sciences, I don't support any kind of war between the two of them (the only exception is business studies / BWL ). As you may know notations in natural sciences are mainly based on Greek or Latin and in my opinion it's not a bad idea, else this would have been replaced decades ago. English and German are within the same language family (West Germanic languages) and therefor they are very near and it's really easy to adopt words and phrases. Both languages have many words with the same origin and you can often guess the meaning of a word you don't know yet. There are more similarities then with Romance languages. And yes, both took a lot of words and stuff from Latin and Greek because ancient Greece and the Roman Empire are the basis of today's Western world (including moral values and imperialism - two sides of the same coin). The world is a complex place and the more we interact globally, the more the (living) languages will change. Remind, there are also German words in English like kindergarten (not "children garden"), iceberg (not "ice mountain"), rucksack, Blitzkrieg (Metallica...) or Dollar (from German "Taler" -> Czech/Slovak/Slovenian "Tolar", see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar#Etymology, BTW I'm also very interested in numismatics [including ancient Roman coins]). While speaking of coins... Did you know, it was common to write "IIII" instead of "IV" on coins in medieval times? Somewhere I read US English is just a collection of spelling mistakes*. Remind, the USA aren't "god's own country" - they were built up by people from some/many European countries centuries ago. It's mainly English, but mixed up with other languages, so where's the problem when things bounce back to Europe? *finally retrieved and quoted from https://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3945052.htm (great forums! ): BTW in every message board (especially English speaking) you can abbreviate "by the way" with "BTW". There are several reasons to abbreviate, f.e. back then in the early days of the Internet (especially pre-WWW) memory, space and time were a scarce resource and made it into what we call "Internet slang" today. Oh..."BTW" reminds me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnfyjwChuNU (Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way, great band from the USA). kind regards soggi4 points

It's not true, I know how to distinguish between people and their thoughts (or actions) of the moment... don't make any mistakes and everything would be fine. Given your age, you should not be influenced by unscrupulous people who do not want your good, but act according to their agenda... I wish you that. It's up to you to find the best sources. We all try to be as informed as possible...3 points

@mina7601 Should've figured... I think it wasn't meant to be taken as seriously. I'll take some silly and ridiculous over vileness and hostility that has been appearing throughout the world and history. This person I mentioned, we used to chat every day. Now it's just history. Was about your age then. Continuing... ...this was one of a kind thing that happened once and it seems it won't happen again. Personal interactions with others...is a mystery to me...how you start it, what you say, how to keep it going...I mean it happened ONCE that I seem to have got it right...but that was then, the combination of circumstances that just happened to work I guess...these days I doubt my understanding of definition of "friendship". Just a thought about these online-only interactions...I think they work for exchanging ideas and such, but at least to me, this artificial layer between us just doesn't feel right, even though some say they have online friends. I'm the last guy to ask for advice on these matters, but on feeling bad about disappointing others and such, if it's any consolation, some of us out there may have bizarre mental brakes (or anxieties, if you will) and may not know how to respond in certain cases.2 points

Something in your immediate environment or the world in general or both? The 1st could come down crashing at any time, so...but that article...what does it mean nothing would change if one won the lottery?? Well, that was one example of a bigger event. For me at least, I can imagine it would certainly give some space to breathe, could move away, build a house done right the first time...throw some current anxieties out the window...maybe figure out some new interests. Though it could bring new anxieties and some people crash harder than they ever did before in the end. It's the sad fact that money corrupts, but without it, you're pretty much screwed. Getting used to being worse-off? Ugh, I'd rather not, but it's all random, a Russian roulette, no pattern, just life throwing rocks at you. My father passed away as well. He was a workaholic and distant. It was weird, we were like two people that just happened to live under the same roof. There was also drama due to the way he functioned, rather anti-family. I kept myself out of it, which thinking about it now, was a bit frustrating to the rest of the family: "Why he never says anything?" I guess things were a bit better in my childhood, but, it was strange, he was a backbone of the family, but lacked that personal side of a "real" father. It was difficult for me to even talk to him. There was never a deep conversation between us, not once. I'm close to my mother and my brother's the funny guy of the family. There's no one outside the family though, hence I concluded 3rd point as lacking. There was one person I kept in touch with for over a decade, but it seems he has decided he doesn't want anything to do with me anymore. Seems to be an ordinary weekend, I've caught up a bit on the sleep, went for a walk, drove to the library (not for me, though, at least not for the books, just to go out), going to watch some quiz on TV and then, I dunno...probably waste some time on computer, listen to some same old tunes, scroll on Reddit... I'm thinking I should replace Linux distro I have on the laptop, it's an old Ubuntu version, forgot which one, must be 7 years old by now. Maybe tomorrow if don't procrastinate again. I'm thinking of Debian, supposedly one the last big distros available in x86 flavor. I haven't dribbled much with Debian before, might be interesting.2 points

Youtube-dl is not released (by me) on GitHub. Yt-dlp is here (forked the official repo and publish in-between builds. Then manually upload my compiled XP compatible one) : https://github.com/nicolaasjan/yt-dlp/releases Click on "Show all 19 assets" and you'll see "yt-dlp_x86_Windows-XP.zip". In the New Moon browser you need the extension "Palefill Web Technologies Polyfill" (palefill-1.26.xpi) to navigate GitHub.2 points

No, not. Why negative, not positive, not entertaining these bad times to you?.. So to be able to go out in bad weather (very entertaining, I assure you!..) - we dress according to the weather, that's all. Better shoes, a warmer parka, extra underwear... and don't forget the headgear... and don't cry when the weather is bad, but be happy that there is something new!2 points

Okay ... when u r ready and I've got a warning from a mod here twice just recently for being too political and I was asked not to poke the nest, but that is what is causing me pain so what to do other than keep it bottled up inside. I don't think msfntor likes me anymore and I feel bad that I've disappointed so many people without meaning to. I upset people without realizing it sometimes which is why I keep to myself and have zero friends.2 points

Some thing I have been work on in my very little free time. You know "Browservice" project right? He made a software that pushes endless stream of JPEG images to the browser that contain a website rendered by Chromium engine. Complete with fake address bar and front end JavaScript to capture keyboard and mouse. The idea sounds so ridiculous, so crazy, but it actually works on almost every OS and almost every old browser. Problem of "Browservice" is it doesn't feel convincing. IE constantly downloading images and status bar goes crazy (it appears that the memory leak exists). Also very slow when website has a animating. I did something similar but using RDP. Only for IE5 and IE6. Should work Win98/ME/2000/XP<SP3. I develop in XPSP2 IE6 and WinME IE 5.5 for now. Since it's ActiveX control, I am inside of IEXPLORE.EXE and have full control (that's how drive-by downloads installed spyware and virus back in the days). I use the power to intercept the menu, toolbar, address bar, status bar, etc. IE becomes only a bit of GUI under my control. All commands are redirected to remote server running Chromium engine there. RDP has the feature "Virtual Channel" to send messages (WTSVirtualChannelOpen etc.) My implementation so far browsing experience feels 99% like using real Internet Explorer because RDP protocol is much faster and get clipboard support, access to local hard drive, sound, video streaming, etc. for free by Microsoft. Unfortunately still very early in development. Downloads not yet work. History not yet work. Popup window not yet work (very difficult). But I hope that in a few months from now good old Win9x and Win2000 can join a modern Internet again. Backend in C#. Frontend in Visual Basic 6 with OLEEXP and patched SSUBTMR (just to prove it can be done, but it is painful). Maybe you will say that's the fake screenshot. Okay, you can do it. I don't have the argument at the moment. But soon I hope to show it running on real hardware.1 point

GOOGLE'S DEMO OF UPCOMING AI SHOWS IT MAKING HUGE FACTUAL MISTAKE THIS IS ABSOLUTELY EMBARRASSING. Here: https://futurism.com/the-byte/google-demo-bard-ai-mistake FaiIlure to Launch Google's ChatGPT competitor called Bard — which doesn't even have a launch date yet — is already off to a rough start. As spotted by Reuters, Google's chatbot is already spewing misinformation — right in the company's own promotional demo. "Google just announced they’re going to be rolling out AI search results and there is inaccurate information IN THE AD COPY!" science communicator and author Hank Green tweeted. False Statements It's a picture-perfect example of the current state of AI chatbot tech. While they're extremely good at generating plausible-sounding responses, contemporary large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI's GPT and ChatGPT are still largely unable to differentiate truth from fiction. And that bodes badly, because tech giants including Microsoft and Google are racing each other to deploy these LLMs in their widely-used search engines — potentially filling the internet with complete garbage. Case in point, a short video of Google's new feature, which the company's official account shared on Twitter earlier this week, contains some glaring issues. One whopper: the blatantly false statement that NASA's James Webb Space Telescope took the first picture of an exoplanet, or a planet outside of our solar system. In fact, as NASA is the first to admit, the first exoplanet to be imaged, a Jupiter-like planet orbiting the brown dwarf 2M1207, was captured by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) back in 2004, 16 years before the James Webb started observations. Bad Start This morning, the search giant revealed it will include generative AI answers in some of its search results, but still has yet to reveal when the public will gain access to the feature. All we know is that the wider public will have access "in the coming weeks." Investors were clearly not impressed, with Alphabet shares dipping nearly eight percent so far today. In short, it's a worrying start in advanced AI for the largest search engine in existence, when a highly anticipated new feature is already spreading lies before even being launched to the public. "Natural. Language. Processors. Can. Not. Know. When. They. Are. Lying," Green added in a follow-up tweet.1 point

I consider myself more of a generalist. My subjects of study were mathematics, biology and Latin. So I am on both sides of the force. Linguistic skills are particularly useful in the natural sciences to gain clarity and to adequately formulate insights gained. In any case, I am very concerned about the impoverishment of the German language, especially among our youth, which is also caused, among other things, by the constant use of Anglicisms. And I have deliberately not abbreviated "by the way" this time to make a small point. But as I already said, we are moving too far away from the topic here and are unfortunately off-topic.1 point

I finally got the stupid touchpad in my Dell Precision 7530 to work with Windows 8.1. Here's how: 1. Download these: https://www.mediafire.com/file/icgdlhs9vys6x0i/Intel_Serial_IO_7thGen%2B_Win81.zip/file They're intended for Intel Skylake, but can be made to work with Kabylake and later by simply adding in the Device IDs. 2. Please read the Read Me for a list of supported devices. If yours is not listed, you will need to mod the INF to include it. 3. Disable Driver Signature Enforcement. If you have a multi-boot, you can just simply reboot and then select Change Default or other options on the boot menu. If not, navigate to Settings->Update and Recover->Recover->Advanced Startup->Restart. Click Restart now again and the Advanced options will appear. 4. Go to Device Manager and System Devices. In there, there will be a few devices named Intel Device (or they may have the name of the device already). These will report as having no driver installed, so right click->Update->Browse->Select from a list->Have Disk->And then point it to iaLPSS2_I2C_SKL.inf. Install away. 5. Install the touchpad driver that corresponds to your device whether it be Synaptics, ALPS, or Elan. Dell uses a customized version of ALPS known as Dell Touchpad. If you have this, you can find the driver on the driver page for your Dell laptop model. Just select Windows 10 from the dropdown. 6. Restart if prompted and voila, the touchpad should be fully functional!1 point

A few false positives from some unknown security vendors is quite common. See issue #25. The executable on yt-dlp's GitHub is built with a custom Pyinstaller from https://github.com/yt-dlp/pyinstaller-builds and doesn't have that issue. I use the official Pyinstaller. Yeah, except there are too few of XUL extension devs left and some WebExtensions have surpassed their abandoned XUL variants in usability. I recently learned you can write BitTorrent client on top of the platform - MagDown. Another extension can do Gopher - OverbiteFF. I recently noticed the old abandoned XUL extension Ant Video Downloader can no longer fetch videos off YouTube, I wonder if only a banal fix is required or something more extensive. Somewhat unrelated, but work shift is coming to an end and I've been trialing AVX2 build of Pale Moon on my work computer today. While it's not Earth shattering, I have to say I'm really happy about it as the delays that are usual in operation of the browser are noticeably reduced. Makes me wonder what more could be done in regards to speed manually on the code level. I can't run it at home due to obsolete AMD Phenom II X4 920 CPU...1 point

... The UXP forks (NM28/St52) offered here by roytam1 (infinite thanks BTW ) are based 99.5% on the same application platform (UXP) that official Pale Moon (and Basilisk) is based on ... Like "our" forum, "theirs" is also inhabited by numerous very knowledgeable members; because the platform is more-or-less common, if issue "A" affects PM, there's a strong likelihood same issue "A" affects NM28 and/or St52... If solution to issue "A" is offered inside the PM forums, then good chances are the same solution will work for NM28/St52, too... Case in point, the recent "discourse" breakage... Fortunately, one can visit the official PM forums and read most content there without a mandatory registration - the site is safe, renders fine in "our" browsers and, frankly, is also a chest full of invaluable knowledge on "legacy" browsers, "legacy" extensions, etc. When I, @UCyborg or some other person here includes a link to the PM forum, should be assumed by the frequenters here that it links to content that is also relevant to "our" browsers , or, at the most extreme, it links to general discussions with tangence/interest to "us", too ... IOW, you don't have to use Pale Moon browser to follow a suggested link to their forum - FWIW, I don't use PM myself, for the simple reason it's incompatible with my OS, however that fact doesn't stop me from visiting their forum for "consultation" on various issues/problems (mind you, the forum is less "hostile" now to read, with "you-know-who" banned from posting ) ... I understand my opinion(s) might not resonate well with everybody here, "c'est la vie" , and, certainly, I don't want to sound unpleasant to some of you, but...1 point

God, give me the grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, Courage to change the things which should be changed, and the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other. Both of them seem to be be 6 or 7 cycles behind if I am not mistaken https://epic-browser.en.uptodown.com/windows The chromium based does not support any add ons. I'll be giving catsxp a try in the foreseeable future. Catsxp also working on winxp providing that you can transfer window 7 certificates to xp Cheers1 point

I have done a few tests to measure copy speed during Text portion of setup. Here are the results: NLited XP source, 5251 files occupying 399.7 MB. After the copy part on destination drive are found 2850 files, occupying 476MB. Preparation made by WinSetupFromUSB 0.1.1, run on XP SP2 system, C2D 4300@2.9GHz. USB stick- Lexar JD Lightening 1100 1GB, which is relatively fast: In all cases stick was quick formatted using HP USB format tool 2.0.6. To check if USB write protection via migrate.inf plays role I tested without it as well. All tests performed intentionally on an old Celeron 1.7MHz/384MB RAM/VIA 266KM chipset, which supports USB 2.0 once the USB drivers are loaded. FAT16: Stick prepared for ~15 min. (899 secs.) Text mode copy part with USB write-protection- 4:10 Text mode copy part without USB write-protection- 6:13 FAT32: Stick prepared for ~21 min. (1253 secs.) Text mode copy part with USB write-protection- 12:58 Text mode copy part without USB write-protection- 7:15 NTFS: Stick prepared for ~4 min. (238 secs.) Text mode copy part with USB write-protection- 1:42 Text mode copy part without USB write-protection- 1:45 It really puzzles me why FAT32 is so slow compared to FAT16 If your system supports USB boot from NTFS formatted partitions AND you are not planning excessive usage of the USB stick in terms of write operations, where NTFS may wear it out (disputable with modern USB sticks), NTFS seems to be the way to go.1 point

Since most USB sticks of nowadays common size come from manufacturer (NOT bootable) formatted as FAT32, you can now understand how I left a number of people bewildered by the speed of sticks on my good ol' Asus sub-notebook running 2K SP0. (600 Mhz - 10 Gb HD - built in year 2000) Typically I would go to a customer's office, make him copy the files I need (from a very fast - top end - desktop) on one of his sticks, (several tens of seconds), then in a flash read them on my small faithful thingy (also helped by the fact that reading is usually much faster than writing). B) Just imagine the overall amount of time wasted by people waiting for their files to be copied to sticks thanks to the "stupid" upgrade to the drivers the good MS guys made.
