  1. Sad news for everyone here at MSFN. One of our forum supervisors, Dencorso, passed away on October 24th, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Apparently he was still upbeat and optimistic about the future a few weeks before he passed. My memories of Den go back quite a few years. He was incredibly helpful to me with technical problems, which is what this board is all about of course, initially mainly with Windows 98, and latterly with Windows XP. He was immensely supportive too when I first became a moderator here, something I will always be grateful for. He was definitely one of the good guys, and will be sorely missed here. Please add your memories here of working with Den. Thanks, Dave.

  2. I am so sad. He was a great person. I knew him since my first days on MSFN, many, many years ago, and besides the public interactions on the board we had a lot of correspondence via PM's, both on computing and on a whole range of different topics, from cinema and TV to art and linguistics (he could read and understand very well Italian and I can understand a very little Portuguese, we had a common interest in Latin - as root of both languages - and we often exchanged opinions on these and many other things), I considered him a friend. I will greatly miss him and our exchanges. Besides his great work in helping and advising other people on technical matters, he was always polite and just (as a moderator), while often managing to keep a veil of humour in his posts. He told me about his illness, describing it as a "a quite mean cancer", from the tone of his latest messages he was fighting fiercely against it, and was hoping to defeat it only one month before, at the end of september. May he R.I.P. jaclaz

  6. From little searching, _escaped_fragment_ is an old query parameter meant for search engine crawlers to get pre-rendered version (https://www.seo4ajax.com/faq/what-is-the-escaped-fragment-parameter/). Scroller isn't there on JavaScriptless version because base HTML comes with CSS directive overflow-y: hidden !important, which is undone later at the other place with overflow-y: revert !important. And these directives are presumably removed later entirely with JavaScript. UXP doesn't understand revert, so I think it can be fixed only with a manual CSS fix for now if you want JavaScriptless version to show correctly: @-moz-document domain("boards.straightdope.com") { html { overflow-y: unset !important; } }

In Serpent 52, firefox-91esr seems to be the minimum FxESR version that is supported by "boards.straightdope.com" (91esr has been now deprecated, the currently supported one is 102esr) : general.useragent.override.straightdope.com;Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:91.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/91.0

  10. Oh WOW! I am so sorry to hear that. I wondered why we haven't seen that many posts from him in quite a while. Den was also very kind and helpful to me. He and Trip have been the two mods that I have personally interacted with the most over the years.. Thank you very much for sharing this sad news, Dave. May he rest in peace. EDIT: Looking back over my old records I was reminded that Den and I joined MSFN within a few weeks of each other, which means nothing, really, but was just something we had in common.

  12. In NM28, discourse-based boards load the "proper" (full) version when the "User Agent Mode" is set either to "Native" (default): Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:4.8) Goanna/20221125 PaleMoon/28.10.6a1 or "Gecko Compatibility": Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/4.8 PaleMoon/28.10.6a1 "Firefox Compatibility" mode: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/4.8 Firefox/68.0 PaleMoon/28.10.6a1 exposes a Fx 68.0 slice, which makes "discourse" trigger the "unsupported browser" header and loads the read-only, "dumbed-down" version of boards; as I posted above, "discourse" now expect at minimum Fx 91.0esr to load fully (possibly, some version between 79-90 is the exact minimum version of the release branch, but I didn't bother checking that scenario ...) .

  20. @luweitest : In about:config, locate network.captive-portal-service.enabled and toggle to "false"; for good measure, also locate captivedetect.canonicalURL and change the value from http://detectportal.palemoon.org/success.txt to an empty string; restart browser to take full effect... FWIW, for me "captive portal detection" isn't considered as nefarious... Please, also read: https://www.palemoon.org/policies/privacy.shtml Also, for: ... read: https://19216801.one/ (i.e. this is an internal LAN IP address, not something external...) I can understand you being inside mainland China makes you extra cautious/suspicious of "background" connections, still I think Pale Moon can be absolved of such wrong doing ...

  22. Rep doesn't mean anything, so it doesn't matter if people are farming rep or not. The reason it is here is because it is on by default from the forum software. It is not worth the effort to turn it off, since (as stated) it doesn't mean anything.

  25. @j7n It may work if you set the user agent like you're using the newer version of Firefox, eg. Firefox 100. It doesn't seem to mind official Pale Moon user agent either, so I assume you should be able to get it working if you use the new New Moon at least.

  26. As far as that goes, you could install ANY NUMBER of my browsers all onto the SAME user account and none of them will conflict with each other as long as you only have ONE of them running at a time. You only need to put them all in their own sub-folder and launch them all from their own 360Loader.exe. Here I have three of my versions (v13.5, v11, and v13) all installed in their own sub-folder inside the sub-folder "Miscellaneous". All are on the same user account and all three can be ran without conflicting with each other, again as long as only ONE of them is running at a time.

  28. A think there's a (minor) bug in XP SP3 installer. If you unpack it and open the "UPDATE\update.inf" file you can find these lines: [Save.Reg.For.Uninstall] HKLM,%SMIEAO%\%SECURITY%\CACHE_FLUSH,"RegPoliciesPath",,"%SPMWCV%\%SET%\%CACHE%" [IE.AdditionalSettings.AddReg] HKLM,%SMIEAO%\%SECURITY%\CACHE_FLUSH,"RegPoliciesPath",,"%SPMWCV%\%SET%\%CACHE%" but if you look for the "%CACHE%" variable under [strings] you will see: [Strings] CACHE="Cache As you can see the second ' " ' is missing so the variable will probably not be processed correctly I can't check it myself as I don't have access to any XP SP2 or lower at the moment (in order to install SP3 and check it). The correct line in the registry should be: HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\CRYPTO\CACHE_FLUSH,"RegPoliciesPath",,"SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\CACHE" Could anyone check it? And check if you haven't got sth like this: HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\CRYPTO\CACHE_FLUSH,"RegPoliciesPath",,"SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\"CACHE"

  29. Many Internet forums now operate the extremely heavy, new generation "Discourse" engine. Old browsers including New Moon receive a read-only compatibility version, which is completely unusable. It may be "clean and modern" and completely crippled. The page extends below the screen, and there is no apparent way to scroll it at all. Disabling JavaScript doesn't do it. I just found out that appending ?_escaped_fragment_ (or &_escaped_fragment_ ) to the URL makes the page scrollable normally. It's perplexing why Discourse doesn't work like this by default. For example, https://boards.straightdope.com/t/how-are-people-feeling-about-discourse/926428?_escaped_fragment_

  31. What would really be great is if we didn't have to jump through any loops to disable this menu stuff... I'm not talking about disparate and still limited settings like with official Chrome, but the way it used to be possible with XUL and extensions like Menu Wizard. I think I have somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4 or all menus/items turned off with it, browsing is much more convenient without all the clutter.

  33. Sometimes when I even say hello and hi, some people here take even that wrong, like the cadence of my voice is off (which it is, I admit) but, I'm sorry, you don't keep running up to people demanding a proper response (which would be a simple hello or even a simple nod) ... fool me once, shame on them - fool me twice and shame on me. Online, things are better for me, but overall, I don't belong anywhere, not that I ever did, but I wasn't aware and just thought people were stupid, but I realize now, this new social cues (and whatever people call "Normal") is not all my fault. Sorry, guys, struggling today for various reasons.

  36. Sorry that I've been lost recently, very occupied . I want to say that when the last v13.5 version of 360EE comes up I will make an edited version of it. I already forgot what was the stuff I did but thankfully I wrote my notes so I can eventually remember. As for the other browsers (just to clarify): - DC Browser needs no more edits, I did the edits I could do (I literally just edited a few binary strings and it turned out I could modify some stuff on the browser and then I decided to release these browsers on MSFN after a few edits to see if people could benefit/like my work) and I don't have anything else I can add to it (the same applies with the 360EE versions on this thread). Maybe someone can expand its functionalities with Assembly knowlegde or something of low level of that kind but I unfortunately don't know anything at all of that area. - The same from DC Browser applies to Mini Browser. Cheers and thanks for using the stuff I published!
