Hi, there I am newbie here my name is matthew1 and I am glad to be part of this community and I think there is lot of things to learn and gain some knowledge. thanks3 points

I will use the operating system for as long as I have old computers compatible with it where XP is the best fit, and the increased resource consumption of anything newer would be felt. To throw out a working computer as out of date, or cripple it with bloat to make it so, is an unreasonable proposal. Old applications run on WinXP, and are also much faster. As long as I don't need to exchange bleeding edge file formats with other people, this software serves me better because, in addition to its speed and efficiency, I have also learnt to use it well. It does not require new redistributables or frameworks, or mandatory online components. If I have a goal of using a spreadsheet or encoding video, I default to the oldest tool that can accomplish that. The files produced will also be compatible with the most computer systems, either old or new.2 points

To prevent user confusion, I strongly recommend disregarding the tutorials and contacting me directly instead about the extended kernel. The original post was removed as it was continuing to confuse users. There will be further discussion about the evolution of the extended kernel in the coming pages.1 point

Yes, that's very clear, thanks. Anyway, I'm happy that I really have got the last XP version of the runtime now! I certainly rebooted after installing 14.28.29213.0, but I can't swear that I had also rebooted after uninstalling 14.28.29812.0. Maybe it needed that to actually uninstall the files, but there was no prompt to that effect. You would think that even if that was the case the 14.28.29213.0 installer would have just overwritten them, or thrown an error if it couldn't, they didn't seem to be locked when I deleted them manually. Bit of a rubbish install and uninstall system really, everything looked absolutely fine in the Add/Remove programs list!1 point

Did you take care to also restart the machine between uninstallation of 14.28.29812.0 and installation of 14.28.29213.0 ? Firefox specifically comes with a dependentlibs.list file inside its main appDir, whose content reads: MSVCP140.dll api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll api-ms-win-crt-string-l1-1-0.dll api-ms-win-crt-heap-l1-1-0.dll api-ms-win-crt-stdio-l1-1-0.dll api-ms-win-crt-convert-l1-1-0.dll VCRUNTIME140.dll api-ms-win-crt-math-l1-1-0.dll api-ms-win-crt-filesystem-l1-1-0.dll api-ms-win-crt-environment-l1-1-0.dll mozglue.dll api-ms-win-crt-utility-l1-1-0.dll api-ms-win-crt-time-l1-1-0.dll api-ms-win-crt-multibyte-l1-1-0.dll nss3.dll lgpllibs.dll api-ms-win-crt-locale-l1-1-0.dll xul.dll So, firefox.exe is instructed to forcibly look for these DLLs (12 api-ms-win-crt-*.dll that are part of Windows 10 Universal C Runtime, 2 that are part of VC++2015-2019, 4 that are part of Firefox itself) only there, not in system directories... If you remove just the Win10UCRT dlls without also removing them from inside dependentlibs.list, then you'll get the "Can't load XPCOM" launch error... For Vista SP2 and higher, we have KB2999226 (Win10UCRT), so if I modify dependentlibs.list to MSVCP140.dll VCRUNTIME140.dll mozglue.dll nss3.dll lgpllibs.dll xul.dll ... I can launch Firefox without any api-* DLLs present adjacent to it (they are loaded from within system32); likewise, trimming down dependentlibs.list to just: mozglue.dll nss3.dll lgpllibs.dll xul.dll will force firefox.exe to look for dependent DLLs (Win10UCRT + VC++) in the system dirs, if they're absent in appDir; if you don't have them installed either, then you'll get the following launch error: Because KB2999226 doesn't exist for XP, VC_redist.x86.exe does bundle/install these Win10UCRT DLLs under XP... Are things any clearer now?1 point

windows 8.1 driver is not absent. It is just not listed. They are still making wddm 1.3 drivers for windows 8.1 but just quietly for some unknown reasons..1 point

... Yes, this fact was posted already on Feb 6th by @George King , so nothing revolutionary here (no disrespect meant) ... As you belatedly found out, I posted these already on Feb 6th, but I guess having the last post on a thread's page is a safe bet others will miss noticing it... OT, of course, for this thread, but 14.28.29812.0 installs and runs perfectly fine under Vista SP2 32-bit (CPython 3.7.10 x86 launches fine with it, doesn't launch without it! ) Kind regards1 point

OK, after testing with @UCyborg I've finally confirmed that version 14.28.29812.0, although it apparently installs fine with no errors, does not in fact work on XP! 14.28.29213.0 is indeed the last XP compatible version.1 point

I voted "yes". I will continue using XP, but as a VM on my Fedora 33 (Linux). The reason for this choice are several: lack of support of new hardware, programs dropping support for pretty much everything, C++ Redistributable no longer available, can't run Skype, can't run Teams, can't properly use Office 365 unless I use the browser, no AVID Media Composer, no Davinci Resolve, no x266 or H.266 VVC decoding nor encoding, no hardware acceleration for new-ish GPUs and no drivers whatsoever for new GPUs, no proper NVME support, no new version of Java and ultimately no UEFI support. I think that in the future, we're gonna see more and more users with a configuration like mine in which there's Linux installed as main OS, Windows 10 for work/productivity and lastly Windows XP/98/Android as VMs for anything else and nostalgia.1 point

Possibly, my PC is really new for Vista and older (for some reason it ran fine on Vista when I tried it though, never had any timing or logon errors even after multiple reboots). I can probably do a KVM setup like you said, so I can have my main PC running Windows 10 Enterprise (Probably the previous H2 release for stability. Currently its Windows 10 1803 Enterprise and Windows 7 in a dual boot). Once 1803 goes EOL, I'm going to move that to 1909 Enterprise and get 1 more year of support. This means I only have to update once a year, or go to the latest H2 release and update once every two years.1 point

It's possible, as long as you don't mind running it without ACPI. But you'll need drivers for your onboard SATA controller. Try this one: http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/813816.html I managed to install and run Windows 2000 on a Z370 machine, in a dualboot setup.1 point

I am running dual system on same monitor and keyboard using KVM switch. I got XP system (Phenom 2 X4 945, 4gb ram, 8800gts) and "Modern" win7 and linux system (ryzen 7 2700x, rx580 8gb, 32gb ram) both in my dell ultrasharp, g110 keyboard and g203 mouse. I can use logitec gaming software on both since passtrough and can go to xp or modern system with press of button my desktop. Maybe KVM dual pc setup would work to you too. I can enjoy both of them whenever want1 point

Other than being idiotic, all you'd need is a patch and my first statement would apply once again. Dream on.1 point

These leaks don't have a significant utility, we need a Windows 7/8/10 leak, that would be very helpfull!1 point

I need more answers to be able to help what device did you try MTP? Phone, mp3, camera. What is your hardware/software config? Do you have sp3 and media player 11 installed? what is model number of gamepad on back. Does it use direct draw or xinput? If you go to game controllers on control panel and is controller listed? If it is if you click it to properties, go to test tab and press button does it list like this (number 1):1 point

The poll question and option is a little vague. For me, my PC is WinXP, and work is done on XP also. As long as this laptop's hardware do not wear out, and there is no necessity on win7 (or later) I have to use, I will continue use it.1 point

It depends. Is it a desktop or a laptop? You typically have a much easier time getting older operating systems to work on desktops but can be spotty on laptops. Once you can answer that and tell us any other hardware it has can help determine whether or not Windows 2000 would install and actually usable.1 point

Thus far.. @roytam1 has done our community an enormous service with his proficient browser builds. So, between Firefox 52.9.1 ESR; Serpent, and New Moon, I'm able to do everything I need to. When I do have to use Chrome, regrettably, Vivaldi/Opera/Iron are all only based on 49, so I only use it when I truly need to because of 5 years of gaping security holes. Otherwise.. I'm basically on a 'Rickroll'1 point

Well the leak was XP SP1 from what I know so XP SP2 and SP3 are secure (in a way) for now.1 point

Leak for leak, the 2k code has been leaked so long ago nobody even talks about it anymore... so what?1 point

Individual Windows XP updates can still be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog. I suggest that we archive them and also generate a list of SHA-2 hashes so we can keep the update files and verify that they haven't been tampered with.1 point

Why photoshop? I have 2020 photoshop on Windows 8.1 and it runs natively ok. Solidworks I have no idea, but if it uses direct x12, you should definitely take the same brute force way like I did, just try it, copy random files and it might work1 point

About the same as with windows 7 and its d3d12on7. getting 60 - 70 fps with rtx 2060 on medium. On windows 10 You can expect high at 60-80 fps. But this is just the beginning, I'm glad it started and runs reasonably ok. I don't have to use crapdows 101 point

Chrome 360 installs itself in "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\360Chrome", instead of in "%PROGRAMFILES%\360Chrome", as usual. Besides that and having to find out one has to select 显示为空白页 and deselect the other two options on the settings of the "New Tab" page to get a blank "New Tab" page, instead of that annoying Chinese search page , I think it's working great. So there's one more relatively recent browser working on XP. This is good news indeed! Thanks @Windows 2000, you rock!1 point

It was to be expected that the MS will shut down the update system. So I've created my own update rollups (DEU and ENU) to circumvent this problem. Following a list of the updates that are included in my rollups.1 point

"It is understood that users will have until 19 July 2019 to apply the last updates, before the whole update system is switched off, not least of all because it doesn't meet modern Windows Update security criteria" From here: https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3074028/microsoft-kills-windows-xp-all-over-again1 point
