[Win 7] Network Center show a strange symbol
Tripredacus replied to andywarrior's topic in Networks and the Internet
It is an X but your display resolution/font size is causing it to be cut off. -

IBM ThinkPad 560 makes strange sounds instead of booting
Tripredacus replied to dhmmjoph's topic in Hardware Hangout
It sounds like there is something in the fan. -
Sure. OP will need to create custom boot.wim with a selection that launches setup with one or the other answer file.

Oh thanks for this setting. This is what was causing the behaviour of my PCs not being able to enter the BIOS after a shutdown.

IPB Update July 2013 (to version 3.4.5) - BUGS Only
Tripredacus replied to xper's topic in Site & Forum Issues
The paste issue was the responsibility of the post editor (CKE) which is 3rd party to IPB. CKE supposedly has this issue fixed in the 4.3 version of their software. It was caused by (surprise) MS made some change to how IE is detected and instead of being detected as IE it showed up as something else. This I gather from reading but I'm not entirely certain. Now to how to fix? While CKE has completed their fix and release the new version, Invision doesn't seem to have updated to it. You can see Invision's bug tracker for this issue: http://community.invisionpower.com/resources/bugs.html/_/ip-board/internet-explorer-11-copy-paste-issue-r42941 When they release an update, then we can do the update here. Until then, you'll have to use another browser or not paste anything in IE11. -
DNS Hostnames in Windows Network Neighborhood
Tripredacus replied to j7n's topic in Networks and the Internet
Is there a reason why one is static and the other isn't? It would be preferrable to have both static. Or at least set a DHCP reservation for the one that isn't so that it always gets the same IP. Then what you can do is use the LMHOSTS file to set the names to IPs and NetBIOS should work better. I am reading that resolution works as such: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/142309 So right away you can see where a major problem can happen. If the first place to look is the local cache, and the destination PC is on a dynamic IP, then there is a good possibility that the IP is out of date in there. Also it seems that you could use either the HOSTS or LMHOSTS file to set your information but the LMHOSTS file was designed specifically for NetBIOS. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/102725 If you want to clear out errorneous data in your NetBIOS cache you can use nbstat: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784285%28v=ws.10%29.aspx -
I never pay attention to what shows up on the new tab anyways. Currently it shows the most visited URLs. I'm pretty sure you can configure it anyways. Do you think they won't allow an option to change it in about:config?

DNS Hostnames in Windows Network Neighborhood
Tripredacus replied to j7n's topic in Networks and the Internet
If I'm not mistaken, the hostname as used in that case is a NetBIOS name. So we might need more information regarding the network topography. Is this a domain or a workgroup? What is the DHCP server? What is the DNS server? Can you connect to the share by using \\192.168.1.17 ? -

Tripredacus replied to phaolo's topic in Websites and Boards
Even with a suspended G+ account I can still upload a video to Youtube. Its odd because I can't comment on videos or respond to commentators on my own videos but whatever. -
To find out precisely why, in your computer's case, take a look here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158252-trace-why-windows-8-boots-shutsdown-or-hibernates-slowly/

Need help resealing activated windows 7.
Tripredacus replied to esgaroth's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
See the thing is, using OEM System Builder Kit, you aren't allowed to accept the EULA as an OEM. So there is no reason why you would ever boot the system after sysprep /oobe /shutdown. Notice in my generic workflow says "ship" as in "ship the PC to customer" after that step. But yes, it asks for the product key if you go through OOBE. For testing purposes I may go through this process (to verify if sysprep removes drivers) but never enter a product key or activate the OS. An image can safely operate in Audit Mode and not activated for up to 30 days. So as long as your production process isn't that slow, you should be fine with not activating it for the end user. Now also understand this, I know it is allowed for an OEM to pre-activate an OEM System Builder Kit image before shipping, so this isn't a licensing thing. I am just offering an alternative. If you require specific information on how to pre-activate the OS, you can definately find that information online, if not this site. However I would recommend that you contact your Microsoft Account Manager to request the officially supported walkthroughs and best practices guides on this topic. This information is not covered in the OPK documentation for Windows 7. -
Need help resealing activated windows 7.
Tripredacus replied to esgaroth's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
On a standard system I do not use an answer file with sysprep, and never with the OEM System Builder kit OS. Only time I use an XML is for a custom setup. I store generalized images on the deployment server. Typical image creation method: - deploy OS from DVD using answer file specifying install key and Audit Mode. - sysprep /generalize /audit /shutdown - capture image - add drivers and updates (DISM) - deploy image (it would boot to audit mode) - verify drivers, then sysprep /oobe /shutdown - ship NOTE: I do not use MDT. -

I never bothered. I've not heard any complaints from customers about having to type in the product key themselves and having to activate the PC. -

Tripredacus replied to phaolo's topic in Websites and Boards
That isn't the case for me. I only use Chrome to access Google services. Mostly because it seems to work better. -
Crash dump is indicating the issue to be related to ATSwpWDF.sys. This file is used by the Fingerprint/Biometrics (AuthenTec) software.

Google account: skip phone verification
Tripredacus replied to phaolo's topic in Websites and Boards
Apparently it isn't an option anymore. I read many posts on Google Groups that pretty much say you are SOL if you don't want to put in a phone number. I even have this issue (partially) as Google had once asked me to put in my phone number but I refused so then they suspended my account on Google+. It's fine as I don't use Google+ but when they had recently did their account merge with G+, Gmail and Youtube, it ended up suspending my Youtube account too! I can still use Gmail tho... I guess I will just have to live without being able to like or upload videos. -

Do I Need An Antivirus Since I Have Windows Defender?
Tripredacus replied to tlcmd's topic in Windows 8
I've dealt with MSSE team on one occasion and I agree they seem to have their own priorities that don't seem to match up with anyone else's. jaclaz Even our pals at Microsoft now are encouraging people to just "look it up" in Windows 8. And it isn't very helpful! -
No I do not keep a record like you say. I had taken a screenshot of the issue and it is still on the image host.

Do I Need An Antivirus Since I Have Windows Defender?
Tripredacus replied to tlcmd's topic in Windows 8
I really don't have a folder with a lot of EXEs in them. I organize everything I download. So as a test I just went to the System32 folder and MsMpEng.exe went up to 50MB. It idles at 36MB. So I can say I've never had a problem with MSSE at all and not seen any sort of performance impacts. (This is on Windows 7 not 8 so I'm off topic here) -

I've never experienced this. Please elaborate. -
There is no red x in Mozilla browsers. Here is an example of when a similar thing happened with Ponch's avatar: Ponch no longer has this problem with his avatar and it shows up as the gray man for me now, but aviv00 (among others) has always shown up looking strange. Although, it could be caused by my particular security setup, since I have seen screenshots from other users which do not show this type of display.

This might be the future, Open hardware laptop
Tripredacus replied to jaclaz's topic in Hardware Hangout
Intel tried this years ago but the other manufacturers balked at the idea because they would be losing money on those proprietary parts. Aside from HDDs and RAM (although nVidia and AMD have been moving towards modular mobile video recently) you are pretty much doomed. Have a hinge break on your notebook? Is it a common issue with that specific model? Go to Ebay and find a replacement hinge kit for $70 because everyone else's hinges are broken! Basically any time a friend or relative wants me to look at a notebook, I have to use the disclaimer that in most cases physical damage repair can cost almost as much as just buying a new one. It's a racket. Ref: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/mobile/display/20060327232038.html The only way I can see it working is if it comes through natural evolution of the market. I have a feeling the notebook ODMs would fight it just like last time. I would be all for it for sure!
