  1. So are they saying that an XP PC will receive no updates at all, even for the software that is installed? I always figured that IE and Office updates could potentially still show up, even if no OS updates were being made.
  2. That update breaker also affected Forefront clients updating through WSUS. That article is funny, like this part: Compared to this: Which is from MSSE's EULA. It only allows for that or home use, as MS wants you to use ForeFront for business use.
  3. I used to walk similar distances in previous work, but never thought about using a step counter.
  4. This is how to become a moderator. Post on forum. Then one day someone on the staff sends you a PM and asks if you want to be a moderator. Simple.
  5. When I worked for an ISP, we used to use a metaphor that the mail exchangers were like one of those fish traps. You know the type where the fish goes in but can't get out, even though you (as a human) can look and see how you could get out? So emails getting stuck in the mail exchanger probably was never actually what was happening, but that didn't stop us from telling people that.
  6. Hopefully this means someday soon I can detach my Youtube account from Google+. Then hopefully it will no longer be disabled due to "names policy" and I can comment on videos again.
  7. Would like to see what partitions exist for Disk 0 using Diskpart. Where did Acronis fit into this? Do you indeed have a c:\recovery\windowsre\winre.wim at that location?
  8. WinPE should follow the basic system requirements of the OS it was created from. So for WinPE4/5, it would match the CPU requirements of Windows 8. So I think you would be correct. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/system-requirements Obviously the other reqs are invalid, although you probably do need 1GB for a 64bit PE4/5 to function properly.
  9. There are some major drawbacks to Peltier cooling that either haven't been fixed or are in products that are not commonly available or are expensive. http://www.heatsink-guide.com/peltier.htm
  10. You know, this came up before. I am testing a WinPE5 image with all our hardware now, with the intention of replacing the WinPE4 image. If our XP and DOS images do not deploy, it will be a problem. I suspect it will come down to how we are using it. For example, what applications are you running? Are you using DISM or Imagex or something else? And even if this is the case, why couldn't you just use one of the older binaries instead?
  11. There are some things I'm confused about. What OS came with the notebook originally? If it was Windows 8.1, it seems odd that it would be out of warranty already. It obviously had Windows 8.1 on it prior to installing the "OEM" version, as it is mentioned in the XML data. Normally, when you update an 8 to 8.1, a second (bootable) recovery partition is created, but that doesn't show up in your diskpart screenshot. Was one of the recovery partitions deleted prior to this problem? Booting into the remaining partition shouldn't be too difficult, but you'll need to post the results from BCDEDIT /ENUM ALL You can use this thread for some reference, as there is little difference between 7 and 8: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171410-how-to-repair-a-broken-windows-7-recovery-partition/
  12. There is a limit on the main profile page. However on the menu on the left, if you click on Friends there it will show all of them.
  13. Interesting. Recently I had come across another person who wanted to try making a miniature arcade machine using a GameBoy Color and some iPhone add-on. http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?51324-How-to-build-an-arcade-machine-with-an-Arcadie-Photos-inside
  14. I manage the wires quite well actually. You will notice my use of the zip-tie to make it so the wires do not go in the fan.
  15. Iceman's WinPE guide, although dated, still has the instructions needed to make your WinPE into an ISO. See it here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/144914-guide-creating-wim-images-of-windows-for-system-deployment-using-pe/
  16. I agree, if Disk Management is prompt to format the disk then something is off with it. I would put it back into the Windows 8 notebook and make sure it works. The prompt you would want to be seeing is to import a foreign disk.
  17. What is the binary version of that imagex.exe? I have a testing version of a Win8 PE that may hopefully replace the Win7... It is a requirement as some hardware will not boot WinPE4... I only use imagex.exe for limited deployments of XP and DOS images still. As long as the deploy option would still work with those OSes, I'd be fine.
  18. I can find companies that say to use these with "Vista" you need to buy *their* external USB card slot thingies. It could be possible to create a driver for Windows 7 if a Vista driver had existed. There are risks such as BSOD and I wouldn't want to even attempt it on a workstation or home PC. I think this is one of those cases where having an older PC laying around would be helpful.
  19. This is one I have on VHS. After seeing it, I wanted to live in that white pyramid house.
  20. It looks just like other parts of the Technet library, for example the online version of the WAIK CHMs.
  21. That screenshot was from some prototype version of Windows 8.1 that is under consideration for future release. See here for when this story broke: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155290-windows-8-deeper-impressions/?p=1073745 EDIT: We also have a topic for this here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171469-windows-81-update-start-menu/ So you can continue the conversation in either of those places.
  22. What service pack do you have? What is the hardware ID of the audio device?
  23. Update: This is NOT fixed after applying Update 1 to Server 2012 R2 Standard. I was able to get the Explorer Application error by opening PowerShell prompt from the taskbar and initiating a restart using the Ctrl+X menu as before.
  24. The miniPC I set up a few years ago has SP3. I haven't actually used it yet other than to create a media backup. I hope to use it later this year but for now it is just sitting on my mantle underneath a calculator. The reason for it was that happened to have been the disc I had on hand at the time. Not really a good reason is it? Anyways, I'm the kind of person who upgrades only if really required. I will make do with whatever I have as long as possible.
  25. You can try removing the feature, reboot and re-add it. It is possible that high scores are not kept if this is done... such as ones kept for Minesweeper and (I think) Hearts.
