  1. To be honest, website admins have had to validate all registration information with ICANN for many years now.
  2. Does "Metro" show up in /GET-FEATURES results? With Windows 8.1 you can make the OS boot to the desktop.
  3. They are user account SIDs. You can find them in HKEY_USERS. http://www.sekchek.com/downloads/white-papers/windows-about-sids.pdf http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243330 Regarding the programs looking for the Start Menu, I am wondering if these programs were written for this OS or for x64. Also for Chrome download location issue, I've known others who have had this problem but I haven't had it happen to me.
  4. Are you logged in with a local account or a Live account?
  5. I have not encountered the Start Menu problem. Is the Start Menu folder that is blocked the one in your profile or the one for Public?
  6. I use both because I have to for support reasons. Not everyone will install the update.
  7. The link you provided is not relavent to this issue, that link is a specific college directory access. Besides, I've never had to change security perms for /etc, its always been system. Sure it does. The owner of the etc folder (by your example) is TrustedInstaller. Did you try to take ownership of that folder (and child objects) and see if your problem is resolved?
  8. Are you actually going to use the MEI's features? I don't and I never install its driver on my personal systems.
  9. If this is only for theatrical movies, you also need to add The Clone Wars.
  10. It is back up. Apparently they had a server outage. http://www.autoitscript.com/forum/topic/159333-server-outage-24th-26th-feb/
  11. Just for the record (and FYI) on "particular" setups (like "Kiosk" or similar) a keyboard terminator has been widely (and traditionally) in use to avoid the "Missing Keyboard, press F1 to resume" error or some of the similar ones: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=22422 jaclaz : Interesting. I wish I had known about that BSOD issue earlier. I remember some years ago having to help someone troubleshoot why their Server 2003 would BSOD at boot when hooked up to a KVM but not when a keyboard and monitor were directly connected.
  12. I think that restart option is only in Windows 8.1.
  13. I don't use Lite Touch with WDS but I do use WDS... at least just for PXE booting. The reason for DHCP is that the client needs an IP address. In a default (single server setup) the DHCP server also knows the location of the PXE server. So when you set a client to boot to the network it sends out a request to get an IP address. The DHCP server responds with an IP address and some other stuff like gateway and what the PXE server's IP is. If WDS is on the same server as the DHCP role, they work together so it sends the address automatically. If the WDS is on a different server, you configure the DHCP server with an option and enter the IP of the WDS. So then the client will send its capabilities to the WDS. The WDS looks at the capabilities and responds with the appropriate boot file.
  14. You are right tain, you can interpret it that way. If you dig down to the bottom, there are 2 types UEFI 2.3.1 firmware and BIOS. We call "it" (the menu) the BIOS still. UEFI BIOS (sic) usually has legacy support in it and can be changed in the Boot section or CSM. You can choose if you want devices to boot in UEFI or Legacy mode. Some systems let you enable both, but I prefer to use one or the other... Now the amount of systems that would let you replace the entire firmware with an actual BIOS rather than a UEFI is going to be limited. For example, the Intel 6 series boards you can find some that have either a BIOS or UEFI. Intel coincided adding UEFI to their boards with support for 3rd gen CPUs. You can find board REVs here: (3rd Gen-Ready AA#s) http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-033076.htm But I am unsure if you could dump the BIOS from the old rev and put it on the new rev. I think for most people's concerns is that they can disable UEFI boot in the BIOS (and secure boot or whatever else) if they have the option. Then, for all intents and purposes, they have normal "BIOS" ... As mentioned, all "BIOSes" are different and some may not operate the same way as others.
  15. I was surprised by this just last week. I am working on a custom appliance and it uses a wireless/BT keyboard. I did not expect that I could enter the BIOS using it but it works just fine.
  16. Windows Mail is only in Windows 8, its fine to keep the topic here. I, myself, do not use the program.
  17. You can change the setting in the BIOS usually. I think if the disk is in GPT format, it may not boot in Legacy Mode on some hardware which may require a reinstall. On some BIOSes, when you change to legacy it won't show the HDD as a bootable device, or you may get a BCD error.
  18. I deleted your duplicate thread in the Software Hangout. Do not create duplicate topics.
  19. The answer files I use for Windows 7 and 8 are the same except the product key is different. So if you just didn't have the ProductKey object, the file would work with both.
  20. I have been able to reach autoitscript.com for 2 days now. Anyone know anything about it?
  21. I never use those links. Did they actually go to a page that was helpful? I seem to recall they went to some page about as helpful as a 404.
  22. The user has not set their country in their profile, it is possible they are using a different locale than en-US. Also Windows does not treat all keyboards the same. For example, using an Apple keyboard on XP also ends up having "odd" key press results on the non-Windows keys.
  23. ALL of them??? Here's a start: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/146986-windows-7-deployment-documentation/
  24. I forgot that a KB came out for this issue. It is not a fix, but maybe a patch will come in the future. NOTE: It was discovered to also be a problem with Windows 8.1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2929203
  25. That date is for Windows 7 stand-alone only. You can still purchase a computer with Windows 7 installed from an OEM under the Downgrade Rights program after that date.
