Can't Install WinXP on Compaq Presario CQ43-303AU Notebook PC
submix8c replied to onlyrasel's topic in Windows XP
Google reveals "FreeDos" initially installed. Could be an AMD chipset or an Intel chipset according to the manual. You either have to use a hardware detection tool (as Ponch said) or open it up and inspect it. Google "Compaq Presario CQ43-303AU" (with the quotes) and you'll see the Manuals listed (PDF's) and basic Specs (which says FreeDos). -
Turn off AHCI in BIOS, Install XP (IDE mode), install SATA drivers (have you thought of putting them on a CD-RW?), reboot, turn on AHCI in BIOS, reboot. I think that's what was said...

laptop hardrive, not showing in bios
submix8c replied to chuckman45's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Came with Vista or XP Preinstalled. SATA HDD's... Google "presario v6000" (with quotes) - The "Maintenance and Service Guide" will show up. Unfortunately, it doesn't say too much except F2 or F10 should get you into the BIOS (but you did that). Regardless, the HDD should show in BIOS if it indeed exists and "works".Service Manual tells all of the "guts" of the PC. How do you know that it's a WD 160gb? Get inside and check? If so, did you ensure that the cables are correctly attached? -
Brother Printer Commands for Generic/Text Printer Driver
submix8c replied to forge13's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Still haven't had time to "dig into" my past success. BUT, did you "Add" a printer and force it to a non-existent (physical) LPTn (n=#)and THEN use "Net Use" against that non-existent LPTn? Note that you must have the Microsoft Network User-ID/Password (and using it) on the Win9x AND have that same User/Pwd on the Vista (NOT logged on with it). Remember that all machines have to be in the same Workgroup ID. When I get a chance, I'll check into it... I KNOW I had it working at one time - just don't remember how... edit - Additionally, you MUST give the "share" name on the Vista with a SHORT name valid for 9x/DOS and use THAT in the "net use". -

Question regarding Windows 98SE reinstallation
submix8c replied to UltimateSilence's topic in Windows 9x/ME
As I said before, it leaves all installed APPLICATIONS (this is NOT the Windows OS or anything in Add/Remove WINDOWS Components) and any Registry Settings for said Applications. In addition, it leaves ANY Registry settings for any Hotfixes/Updates in Add/Remove Programs (where you ALSO see Applications). This will NOT include "hidden" Hotfixes (I mentioned that too - they are found in "Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Information" and may not include ALL Hotfixes. SOME are NOT visible ANYWHERE (MS Hotfixes, particularly). Any Internet Explorer Upgrades will also be present EXCEPT those components in that PACKAGE that are "overlaid" by an OS Reinstall. Some/Any "Unofficial Hotfixes/Updates" that RENAME Original Windows Components (this means INDIVIDUAL FILES) may NOT be "reinstalled" due to (e.g.) "component.old" still existing (this would have been the ORIGINAL Windows Installation Component that was saved for the purpose of UNINSTALL (you will see those items STILL EXISTING in Add/Remove Programs). That is why I said YOU MUST isolate ALL "renamed" Components and REMOVE the (e.g.) "something.old" (or whatever) AND the Associated Add/Remove entry within the Registry and DELETE or MOVE them elsewhere. If the above steps are not taken, you will have a BAD time reinstalling anything above and beyond the Reinstall. In addition, MANY Application Installs MAY install a NEWER version of "component.xxx" (an ORIGINAL Windows file), therefore the Application will incorrectly function. ISOLATE the not-Originals and MOVE them elsewhere, FIX the Registry, and Reinstall any Applications. THEN the "Hotfixes/Updates" (official and unofficial) may be reapplied. A tedious operation. The "list" of greater-than-"04/23/1999" is what you are looking for... If you're not concerned with anything on the HDD, FORMAT and REINSTALL (start from scratch). Reinstall any Applications, then apply the appropriate Hotfix "packages". Backup you DATA if you don't want to lose it. Find any DRIVERS you may need and have them ready. Have Application Install Packages (e.g. Nero) and Keys offloaded and ready to reinstall. -
NUSB v3.3 is in the first post of the Topic. NUSB 3.5 is here. There's some further info on that version within the 98 SE SP3 topic (page#43/44).

Try this. edit - PLEASE give the EXACT message you are getting, letter-for-letter! A search reveals little since you have both truncated and abbreviated the specific messages. Without that I can assist no longer. BTW, just "switching" between various versions / builds (CDvsDVD) won't do a lot of good. You have updated your MCE with SP3 and no known way of accurately slipstreaming SP3 onto any RTM/OEM has been done (AFAIK). I think if you check on that, you'll find that the System expects a SP3 CD installation. Search the WWW on the subject of SFC against XP Home/Pro (not MCE) that was initially installed with (e.g.) SP2 then had SP3 applied then an SFC run to get my drift.

Kel, it's a RUNNING system the OP is after. USSR, have fun and check the SECOND link that jaclaz gave (which points back to MSFN, BTW). I doubt if you'll get much more assist than that since it's all "experimental" and (nearly) nobody has any interest in it. Even the MicroXP (warez!) is useless as it leaves many items in that don't function AND lacks internet. Do post back any findings and progress... LiveXP is good enough for me.

CRT monitor shakes when motorized device is plugged into certain outle
submix8c replied to vipejc's topic in Hardware Hangout
Post #6 suggests that you have a "draw" of current (two large munching devices on simultaneously) indicating low power (for want of a better term) being supplied, further drawing from the PC (probably in the same line as already suggested). The suggestion that 2-prong vs 3-prong is ok UNLESS you have two wires "swapped" - this is a common cause of "hum" in a P.A. system connected to incorrectly wired (common reduction of "hum" is a "ground lift" or not using the "ground") outlets. Sounds like your house wiring is a bit kludged... Check the gauge of wires, check the fuse/breaker amperage (don't go over the allowable for said gauge), get a "tester" (about $10) at radio shack - 3 lights on it and plugs into a 3-prong plug. Use an "adapter" (3->2 prong "ground lift") with it to test the non-grounded plugs. There may be many "reversed" wires in the outlets (bad ju-ju) that we avoid when gigging for that very "hum" problem that refuses to go away. The "tester" will show you what's wrong (just the lights, folks). Fix those items and many/most problems will go away all over the place. Ensure that fuse/breaker is OFF before fiddling with (and you are probably doing something the city inspector and unions would frown upon). Bottom line, all of the above posts (plus mine) indicates you may have one or more electrical problems. edit - lastly... CHEAT and put another fuse/breaker into the mains and run a spanky new wire/outlet (call it an "extension) to your "pc room", bypassing the rest of the house... ("DANGER, Will Robinson!") -
Please un-confuse me..."To install or not to install... That is the question" Do you want to INSTALL a Nano-Install or NANO an Install? Case #1 involves "stripping" everything to bare-bones before install and UPX'ing can't be done. UPX'ing would have to be done AFTER an "install". Case #2 would suffice with a LiveXP (or as jaclaz aptly states a PE1.x) - again, "UPX'ing after. Please clarify the objective. P.S. (excerpt courtesy of Wayback) - Hmmm... see that "INSTALL"/"DELETE" stuff? Appears to be AFTER the install not BEFORE...

SFC will always ask for "originals" unless... (see this post#8) Besides, what do you think is on CD#2? Ever look? Similar to upgrading a standard SP2 install to SP3... "newer" files are in a different place. And now that I think about it, I believe your first post may be incomplete - is it asking for "CD2" or "Service Pack 2"??? Look here and here and here for various info. Hope that clears thing up...

Solved - 98SE Shell32 file cannot be started
submix8c replied to UltimateSilence's topic in Windows 9x/ME
How true. And a savvy person can "remake" their Win98 Install CD with it, adding the additional "install" selections as other Options in Config.sys/Autoexec.bat, even so far as replacing IO.SYS, FDISK, etc, and rebuilding the EBD.CAB, even creating a large floppy using WinImage for even more utilities.OP has fixed the problem using basic methods. OP doesn't have that much experience. OP was still facing the SFC problem so potentially just "replacing" the file would not have "cured" the problem. (Ref. post#7 about 3/4 of the way down.) Point#1 (buy some floppies" and Point#2 (try reinstall) were given. Point#2 was used. This Topic was marked "Solved"... Good effort, though... -
A running "nano" ("installed")??? Have you tried a Live XP? Don't get more "nano" than that! How does about 125mb grab you? Yes, you CAN put it onto an HDD, USB, CD, whatever is bootable...
