Resurrecting a 1999-Vintage Win98SE Machine
submix8c replied to TELVM's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Depending on the cost (Slocket+Socket370) you may want to stick with the Slot-1 (if you can find one). There's not that much difference between the Socket and Slot versions. 440BX... eh... not too bad for old chipset. Memory limited usually to 512mb. CPU-World CUmine I recently dumped my Slot-1 MoBo's and CPU's (recycled for a song) because the MoBos were OEM. All I have left now is an old HP NetServer Dual 550's (and a single spare), amazingly BIOS allows up to 4x256mb RAM. -
How odd... from here is the "s" version and from here is the non-"s" version. What's the difference? (haven't checked yet but suspect it's probably the OpenOffice "suggestion" screen?).edit - and those are the sizes mentioned.

You mean 5.5.1? I have to assume that you started with XP-SP3 otherwise I doubt it would have worked. What method was the Add-on applied. RVM or nLite? You may notice that one response indicated integration using HFSLIP. I personally use nLite and -X- update list, integrated IE8 and WMP11 along with updates. (But to each their own.)

There are no "patched" modules...

Very astute observation! Grub4DOS in the example given will load your floppy image from the USB into memory and boot it (as if it were a real floppy). Now you have a Floppy Drive!!!

1 - Uninstall any/all items like "toolbars" (eg Bing/Google/etc) that "plug into" IE. (if you want to Google Search, enter GOOGLEdotCOM in the Address bar and set as a "favorite" instead) 2 - Turn off "autoupdate" (mainly items like Java - leave WinUpd on if you wish) 3 - Uninstall any UNNECESSARY IM programs 4 - Set any/all NECESSARY IM programs (eg AIM/Yahoo) in Options to "No AutoStart" 5 - Utilize CCleaner and/or Spybot to "disable" unnecessary startup items (research them FIRST) 6 - In "Services", change to Manual or Disabled any items totally unnecessary (research FIRST) These "eat" CPU/Memory. That should get you on the road... ...finally, DEFRAG after running CCleaner on Temp IE files (and DELETE contents of TEMP folders)!

Pls read ALL of it! The "clean" XP SP3 has MP-NINE and have used it (no My Videos) - the OTHER install I have has MP-TEN (has My Videos). Check your WMP Version - MP-NINE? (bet it is...)

Hmmmm. mine didn't show up for 7 months after install. Not sure why, BUT... I found a suggestion to open Media Player and that (maybe) it would be created. (did I NOT use Media Player for 7mo??? dunno...) addendum - I have Media Player 10. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Player And I just noted that it doesn't exist in my "fresh" XP Install and has WMP9. Try downloading and installing WMP10...
-
Um... not really sure of the "Is that your final answer", but I'd recommend a Repair Install from an untrammeled (as when it was initially installed), using the same source type (RTL, OEM, etc.) plus SP3 "slipped" (if not already). Have that original key handy (key finders are rife on MSFN and internet)...

WIN51 <-both WIN51IC <-Home WIN51IC.SPn <-Home WIN51IP <-Pro WIN51IP.SPn <-Pro Where 'n' is the SP-level (hint - dates will correspond to release/SP-level) Text files with contents "Windows" (not required) and <-enter-> key Tag-files above to be placed in same folder as I386 Check that 4 OEMBIOS.xxx files exist in I386 - may be found on an installed system

Simple ways to speed up your slow computer
submix8c replied to blackturbokitty's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
Correction - #6.... And you're still mistaken... I've installed XP Pro on 128mb RAM with a 733mhz P-III and it ran just fine. And you're still mistaken. Look at the MINIMUM rqmts and RECOMMENDED rqmts. And anyone can tell you More Ram = Less Paging (that's Disk I/O to to newbie) = Faster. Check again... -
How do you center your web page
submix8c replied to Justin90's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
CSS=Cascading Style Sheet (see previous post). Read up on the more useful CSS and DIV methodology. Although I agree with the stmt "very simple way"...p.s. Nov 2011? I believe this has already been "solved". -

7. Better check that... needs less than what you specify. -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/compare?T1=tab15 Starter is bottom-of-the-stack, so to speak. Doubt if many folks even bother with it. Chances are, they use the "Anytime Upgrade" our outright purchase one of the better retail versions. Bluntly, YES, it is a step "downward" from XP (Home, even).

Browse around here for suggestions on a good (free) AV. They exist and some are highly recommended... Choose and try...

FlashGet + FireFox FlashGot AddOn... Maybe FireFox FireFTP AddOn?

Patched BIOS' for older PC's to overcome HDD limitations. If the MoBo is one of them, you can use the patched. I have on a couple and they work fine. Mind you, always be safe and back up your original.

Hmmm... This states And this indicates that there's a "global" setting for each of Domain, Private, and Public.Additionally, link#1 indicates "overrides" in IPSec "setups". In Symantec Firewall (VERY similar), there is something called "Trusted Computers" that basically says "ignore firewall - this PC is OK for anything". Somewhere you have set up some kind of "override". How to restore defaults. It also gives a link that might indicate thet the FTP program is actually allowed (maybe even the IE browser?) similar to the old-style XP/2K3 Firewall. Disclaimer - I have not yet installed/tested either Win7 or 2k8 as of this time but interested in the subject for future install/test. Add'l Note - I have Cable Modem (no firewall - External IP)->Router (firewalled incoming with 80/21 pass-thru to Internal IP)->PC (Symantec - FTP.EXE/Iexplore.EXE allowed ALL, Incoming TCP21/80 allowed). GRC reports CLOSED ports when HTTP/FTP Servers "disabled" and All Others "Stealth". So... Is INCOMING also blocked (that is what GRC "checks" for, BTW )?
-
Silly question - what is the contents of the (any given - pick one) CAB file? Just the EXE???

Hyper-V is kind of a "super" Virtual PC. There is no DIRECT connection to the physical Network Card. You have to "set it up". Didn't you Read The Manual? Read this. Hyper-V "clients" are VIRTUAL and don't have direct access to the Server, they must be "set up" (interconnected).

Exact message is maybe THIS??? http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-xp-2000/44423-sfc-scannow-question.html And... I repeat! After installing an SP2 version, THEN installing SP3 on top, it, WILL ask for the SP2 cd. (did you check the links and do searches as I suggested?).Your alternative if you INSIST on running SFC is to UN-install SP3 then run your scan, then re-install SP3. WHY do you want to run SFC anyway? Any particular reason/need? Another reference - http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?54090-trouble-with-sfc-scannow AGAIN! Do an Internet Search (Google, Yahoo, Bing, WHATEVER!) using THAT CHARACTER STRING (in quotes) and "SFC" (without quotes ) and you will (AGAIN!) see what I mean! You MUST have a "slipstreamed with SP3" MCE for it to work, and, AGAIN, it is NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to accomplish (e.g. WMP11 gets WIPED when SP3 is slipped). Search THAT to see what I mean!

Um, Jed, as has repeatedly been stated (I have a couple of those "PC Angel" recovery AND Supplied OEM Install CD/DVD) you CAN NOT "create" a "modified recovery DVD" with what you have. You CAN, however, create an "OEM Install" CD (NOT DVD, unless ADDING unattended Program Installs or MANUAL after Unattended!). In my experience, the additional folders on an ORIGINAL OEM cd (beyond the I386DIST folder, which is a RENAMED I386 folder, AS PREVIOUSLY STATED) might even appear on the "C:\" drive AFTER a "Full PC Angel Restore". The following folders are additional to the I386 on an ORIGINAL: DOCS DOTNETFX (not on an RTM, only SP1 and up) SUPPORT VALUEADD Normally unnecessary for an install. DOTNETFX (contents obvious) and SUPPORT (Pre-Install tools) contents are freely available at MS. VALUEADD is (usually) unnecessary anyway (pertains to lesser-used software/tools). Additionally, in the ROOT of the OEM cd are: AUTORUN.INF <-starts SETUP.EXE SETUP.EXE <-normally NOT any good for an OEM install due to Special Files, EXCEPT when Add/Remove xxxx.HTM <-Just some ReadMe stuff WIN51 <-required (look in I386DIST\TXTSETUP.SIF) WIN51IC <-required (look in I386DIST\TXTSETUP.SIF) WIN51IC.SPn <-required (look in I386DIST\TXTSETUP.SIF) Note1 - the "n" is an indicator of what SP-level the CD is at. Note2 - the "required" will probably be in the ROOT of your DVD. Bottom line, DO WHAT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED 1 - make a FOLDER of any name on the HDD 2 - COPY the I386DIST folder to it and RENAME it to I386 3 - Copy the "required" to it 4 - Create a BOOTABLE ISO, pointing to FOLDERNAME and try it (you may or may not need the INTERNAL OEM key for Pre-Activation, depending on the existence of a I386\WINNT.SIF, usually NOT on your type of DVD - use a KeyFinder on your PC-Angel Recovered OS to get it) ...or else you are wasting your time. (Been there, done that, as have others...) Note - there MAY (and probably are) be additional files/folders above-and-beyond the STOCK OEM CD (for your SP-Level) due to Integration of Drivers, Hotfixes, etc. Dates inconsistent with the majority of Files in the I386 are undoubtedly additional. Peace, Jed! 'Nuff Said! Edit - additional note - the KEY on the COA is YOUR Key and will require activation. The Internal Key is the OEM Key and does not. In Both case, the install must be CLEAN (boot to CD and Install to empty HDD, not an Upgrade). A simple VALID WINNT.SIF can be generated using nLite as well as slipping SP3 (for the XP one). Dig a little deeper before asking any further - All of this info has been hashed/rehashed everywhere on MSFN and the Net.

This sounds like an nLite problem rather than an Install from USB problem. This should be in the nLite subforum with a LASTSESSION.INI file attached. Also tell the source of original CD fed into nLite - an OEM CD?

How to unhide a suspected hidden partition
submix8c replied to Vinmart's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Calculator GB->GiB, MB->Mib (etc.) http://wintelguy.com/gb2gib.html 1000 not = 1024 HDD are advertised as GB, not GiB and it specifically states that in the specifications, so there's a difference (fools all novices)...
