What version of NIS are you referring to? There's a "default scan" at Startup in some versions that can be disabled either through some Options (remove it) or a registry hack (depending on the version). If you're referring to "auto-protect" (actively checking executed programs) I'm not really sure if there is a way short of "disabling" it. The manual-scan (right-click Partition-Folder-File + Scan) "speed" isn't going to change regardless; depends on the PC's hardware, the parameters for scanning (in the Options), and the number of scanned files. Could you be more specific?

New to Website Devl.
submix8c replied to submix8c's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
Gee, guys! I consider all of you "top dogs", so thx for the comments. However, 1 - I initially used FP; it stinks and have been using Notepad++ (forgot to yank FP line) 2 - Having said that, I've been "revamping" by hand to understand it 3 - Yep, the tables are an exercise (like nesting, borders, scrolling BigPic, etc) 4 - As you may have seen I have PHP installed 5 - I have MySQL (not yet installed) and VS.NET (yet to "use" it) 6 - Aware of the separate CSS; just easier to embed temporarily (and the comments) 7 - re BigPic - I have a resized (with CS2; still learning this) that I started with; again, just an experiment with Table-in-Table + Scrolling. 8 - I have yet to find a straightforward "guide" (I have PHP+MySQL Bible) other than W3Schools and W3, both of which are great reference with samples. I have noted that "manuals" for other-than-MainFrame (e.g. IBM) stink; everything "back then" was at my fingertips and well documented. WWW stuff is not (IMO comparatively speaking). 9 - Having no good "guide" I have been collecting info and samples trying to get for any given "item" the "defaults" and plugging them in (where? at w3.org? convoluted IMO) At the time, I consider my "default website" my Devl/Test and fully intend to fire up a separate webserver/machine. That's why you see all those comments (my references). In my MainFrame day, I had a library of samples (that I created) for each and every type of code imaginable in ASM (including Macros), COBOL, RPG, Fortran, PL-I, CICS, SQL+VSAM+BDAM+ISAM+severalDbases (per language), yada-yada. Someone got one heckuva "gimme" when I was let go (shoulda retrained). I already have some other "junk sample" files in a separate folder (working and non-working). So... here I am trying to learn HTML, PHP, JS, CSS, SQL, and all the other yada-yada. I appreciate your comments; already noted before I started this topic. (Avoiding IFRAME's; have to go back and locate any Deprecated stuff as well and modify accordingly.) BTW, I realize "blinky" shouldn't be there; it was a "fun thing" (yes, I know other methods that I have yet to get to). Also, have been "testing" in both IE6 (yet to upgrade to IE7/8) and FF (idiosyncracies have been a real pain). "Learn-to-earn"... may be lucky on this. Wife is now house-cleaning a lady that does "at-home sales via web" and her hubby does web development at home via "call-back contracts" (he has no formal training either). Haven't yet contacted him (this is why)... (The resizing-table problem... any ideas? Is it in the "table style-class"? No straight forward guides explaining details... I sure miss having a bookshelf full of complete guides/references A-Z.) (Forgot to say - I have another "website tool"; I prefer to use the god-awful stuff generated from FP as a starting point and clean all the crap afterwards by hand until I feel I can shed myself. Why install another "do it for me" space-consumer?) Whew!!! Thanx, guys. Nice to know big-guns took time out. Will look at the links you provided (more sampling). I believe I'm safe in assuming that I should avoid any type of code that won't work on Linux and/or Apache (may want to cross over as a server). Final useless note - MySpace and FaceBook; loaded with DIV's and really crappy code (IMO). Obviously intentional to make it almost indecipherable. edit - errr, PHP doesn't give an option to "break" lines within (AFAICT) so I resorted to using just "BR" (yep, there's a PHP line there). Even using "P" I don't really care for as it's purpose seems more Paragraph-oriented ("P", obviously); useless IMO as there's less control. Tried it - nope, didn't like it... big edit 2 - Thank you CoffeeFiend - the link gave a nice tutorial. Indicates I'm right and wrong at the same time (the direction). Hmmm... rewrite time! -
Yeah, I know it's a strange request but... I've been trying to learn this stuff with a dual-purpose in mind - 1 - Create my very-own 2 - Learn-to-earn (need a j.o.b.) I'm not asking for any specific assistance... YET! What I'm asking now is for anyone that has the time to take a look at the "page" (self-contained except for images and "links") and indicate stoopid misteaks, potential redundancies (I've already found a few and fixed), or outright "yada-yada will bite ya if ya change whooptie-doo". I do however have a problem "dynamically resizing Column2/Column3" so that Column2 is wider and Column3 is narrower (I think prob is in the Style in the HEAD). (I guess this one is a specific request). Rather than putting the code as Attach or a CodeBox, just go to the WebSite (whenever it's up) and "get the source". No Cookies etc. just in-Code Styles and Links. http://martin-enterprises-ltd.no-ip.org/index.php. Mostly up 9am-7pm EDT. (also feeble attempt at learn PHP, CSS, JS) Take your time, no biggie. Been at it for (believe it or not) a week just to get this far. If there's no takers, I'll figure things out eventually (figured out this much).

Well, I seen that (and forgot - duh!). Usual (old) behavior was to put highest count (including guests) as this was an indication of "highest hits on forum" for any given day. See post just below mine. Apparently just some kind of "bug" (or code missing?). Other than that, no problems so far (FF, BTW; 's all good) except... How do you "collect" a quote and pass it into a PM? I've been "collecting" into Notepad then "pasting". Is this the only/correct method ("Help Section")?

One would assume it's the same as for XP, so look for a topic on that instead and install accordingly. HTH

? If this is an Unattended Install, I believe (not sure) that it's always going to be relative to the ROOT folder (c:/yada-ROOT-withOsTags/otherFoldersAndFiles). If that's the case, best to create an ISO Image of everything in the ROOT folder and up (but not the root-folder itself, only the CONTENTS). I don't think (again, unsure) that an Unattended will work in the fashion you're trying (IF an Unattended, which it definitely sounds like). note - someone else more knowledgeable may be able to expand/correct this post information.

Hmmm... rilef may be onto something. - Get the latest S&D - Perform Complete Update - Advanced Mode - Deselect everything but one-at-a-time - Scan and Repeat That way all scans are done but individually thus reducing the memory footprint. Granted the scan time (including manual effort) will increase but the chance of failure will decrease. I might note that using CCleaner will decrease (possibly eliminate) the need to scan the Temp Internet Folders. Be aware that CCleaner does not by default "delete" the User Temp Folder Contents; you have to specify it in the Optional Extra Folders. Also, if anything "bad" is "locked" (e.g. "running"/"in memory", whatever). CCleaner won't be able to delete it; those are the "nasty hard-to-get-rid-of". Running in Safe Mode sometimes (only) helps. (dunno about the memory issue re AGP...) (and FWIW, the last Norton AV to be able to run with low memory was "v2002", or was it "v2003"?)

I may have missed a post on this already but... Is the "Online At Once Record" correct? I could have sworn a couple of days ago it read 8000+ but today it says "today 6000+". Maybe I need better glasses or some of that "old-timer disease" medicine... Gulp! Just refreshed the Forum page... number changed to 1522 but still says "Today" and the time updated to... Refresh time!

@wsxedcrfv - Probably some "hang-over" entries left from another scanner which deleted "something" using their own brand of "known malware database". Many vendors delete what they recognize but sometimes not all is "listed". Wouldn't hurt to allow S&D to remove "what it sees".
-
IMHO, it's a fallacy in S&D in that it loads all of the definitions into memory before the scan. If you install without the updates, it loads up more-or-less ok but as soon as the defs are updated, you get bit. Found this out with a PC I was refurbishing with 128mb. Had to use it in Safe Mode to minimize memory usage. I had made a post on the forum as to the as-stated "minimum memory requirements" in the specs, but never got a response. It would be nice if it was redesigned to use on-the-fly file-access for the defs. Lots of anti-vir (etc. eg Symantec) load up the memory and/or the registry (same difference re: memory). Slow but does complete in Safe Mode.

?WTH? Am I missing something? Standard practice is a Firebreak... Go to the middle, set another fire, follow the burn and let the original fire burn its course to previously (you) burned area. Even if it moves outward (toward you again), you can still walk around the outer unburned area back into the (your) burned area. SOP (or is this some kind of trick question) (edit - same answer as last two I just noticed... a little obvious)

@Arminius - Some folks only have 98FE. 98SE is getting harder to find as a "legitimate source" (i.e. eBay etc.). I have been lucky enough to have found "thrift store" computers with OEM versions (yes, I know it's possible to "upgrade" with it; let's not discuss that). Having said that, it's not really the point. Maybe the OP just wants to "try it out" (who knows). In addition, Member Contributed Projects are sometimes worthwhile for those that wish to contribute. It may be just in the "how-to" knowledge obtained (there's a lot of that here on MSFN). Besides, I think herbalist likes his 98FE and may want to transfer his old already-set-up one to his new "gadget" (dual-boot). Welcome! (and yes I do see your point in the "method" suggestion, so not necessarily impertinent.)

HELP! How do I get Direct Cable Connection to work on WindowNT4?
submix8c replied to NewtWin's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Glad you got it going. BTW, both the Unofficial Service Pack and the NUSB package are right here on MSFN (look around under the 98 sub-forum and the Member Contributed Projects). Just wasn't sure if you wanted to "fiddle" with someone else' PC. -
Probably depends on which "All In One" fileset you're trying to install. If you could specify, there should be ways. Are you trying to do an Unattended OS install (if so which method), or just trying to "silently ship and install it" to connected PC's?

HELP! How do I get Direct Cable Connection to work on WindowNT4?
submix8c replied to NewtWin's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Whew! Allow me to attempt to summarize - You have - 0 - a requirement to connect PC-1 (your Laptop) -> PC-2 (borrowed) -> WWW 1 - a DCC cable you would rather use instead of a - FlashDrive (borrowed) b - No Crossover (requires another NIC in borrowed, then would work?) 2 - an NT4 PC-1 (yours), no USB access/support 3 - another PC-2 (borrowed) with a - XP that "errors" with FlashDrive (? not sure why) b - 98 with USB support but does not "recognize" the FlashDrive Questions - 1 - Is it 98SE or 98FE? 2 - What's the make/model of the FlashDrive? (drivers supplied?) Conclusions - 1 - You don't want (or are reluctant) to try the "NT USB Driver" 2 - XP is causing an (unknown?) error; You dare not attempt to fix (not yours?) 3 - NUSB may not help on the 98; You dare not attempt install (not yours?) I don't have a FlashDrive, so I'm just trying clarify so someone can help. Is the preceding correct? -
What SDK and on what OS?

Really off-the-wall but... You say you're using VPC2k7. Have you installed the Add-Ons from VPC2k4sp1? You "may" need that (Add-On's from 2k7 are not supported). Download from MS (a ZIP file needing extracted), then extract the MSI inside (however you wish; UniExtract works on the MSI file). In the VM (after up-and-running the Guest), use the "Capture ISO Image", navigate to the Additions ISO extracted and run it. Don't know if this will help as I currently don't have any "fixes" on my VM-98SE to check it out (or even know if you've tried this already).

Unofficial update - new version - crashed system!
submix8c replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
re - the CD/RW Drive - I had noted problems with the IAA during my search. There's a claim of solution, but in reference to supported (Google). I have a 440FX here (may be "close enough); maybe during "spare time" I'll experiment too. Well, it did prove the point, though. Maybe your research will help others... -
Huh!! re The Original Topic - Found this Note the Small.Gen one... I had found references relating to this in searching for Tenga. Starting to sound like you'd been getting drive-by's maybe? Hope you finally get everything sorted out.
-
? Works ok for me. Try using the "full sign-on" screen for kix (it's somewhere above the initial Board Index). That's the one I always use, but still...

Unofficial update - new version - crashed system!
submix8c replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Unpack this set (already extracted, you at least need the DATAn.xxx files I believe) Notice that I'm only providing where I found it and no idea what version it is or whether this will hose your system as the IAA wasn't really meant for 440BX. HTH -
Need Help ...Registry tweak on classic startmenu
submix8c replied to illusions's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
This may help. I've never done the sort of thing you really want, but at least the linked page may help you understand what you may be able to do. Suggest doing this in a Virtual environment in case something goes wrong. -
hal.dll , how should boot.ini be? please
submix8c replied to laruv's topic in Install Windows from USB
I suspect you "moved" the HDD from one PC to another (it's a typical error)? Is your post relevant to the Topic (USB Boot/Install)? If not, this post (and yours above) need split off and put in the XP sub-forum. -
Don't remember exactly (think I tried this...), but you might try Virtual CD (MS, Free). (Not "automatic"... sorry. Maybe a "mod" for the registry entries? ...and I note it's mentioned in above link) Not sure about "automatic" on this either (don't use it) Daemon Tools
