Hmmm.... at least a number of clarifications given in the thread. As dencorso said... ditto!

DVD plays in Media Player Classic in WinXP, but not in Win98SE
submix8c replied to diamant's topic in Windows 9x/ME
What happened to testing with Nero? Why did you "change horses" to PowerDVD? -
That would be real nice for those non-English as the packs available so far on MSFN are in almost all English.

First option - TRUE. Second option - Wants to run updates if "install date" determines update is needed (ref. first option). That's the bugger, so I left it be and just install after up-and-running and connected to WAN. The main bugger is the LARGE file(s) it wants to download.IOW, been there, done that. Thx though for including that link for everyone else... Free is free though (except second option isn't "as in beer" as jaclaz would say...).

1 - read above post2 - already included (get it and look it over) There's a lot of "extras" included. Many of which will need updated (again, look at the contents and learn some BAT scripting). P.S. - AutoPatcher98 will not run from CD-ROM without modification (a different project). It's not necessary to actually run the Installers - they are created with Inno Setup and can be extracted with the Universal Extractor (links on MSFN somewhere or Google it). Just extract both then cut/paste contents of second over top of the first - Voila! BTW, for those looking at the latest 98SE Service pack, you could compare the two to help decide (haven't tried it yet but looks promising...). Note - UBCD does not include most "extras" - its intent is to just get you "up-to-date" (as of the last release). And a note... I wouldn't trust the contents of the Win98 folder - USE YOUR OWN!!!! (At first glance, it looks "fishy"...) I'll dig around (later... busy repairing relatives' PC's right now) and see what the difference is between it and the previous version (untrammeled)... Edit - No OFFICIAL UBCD included the contents of WIN98 folder. v4.60 was a Full set. v4.61 was an Update and included the Driver Packs. v4.62 was an update. Apparently I missed v4.7. V4.8 was a full set. v4.8 mentioned above is apparently a conglomerate of "official" (just mentioned) and some other files in the Win98 folder(?) so again, BE FOREWARNED! - Rather not beat up on UBCD too much until a later date. Just use it as an EXAMPLE for you project for now - Don't ask any further questions about this as I have no knowledge of the reason for the Topic being removed and Mods/Supervisors won't respond. CLOSED! - edit2 - ANOTHER FOERWARNING! The WPI is a "special" version by Kel for this project. DO NOT use any other version!!!! edit3 - (cough) additional modules (cough) that may not be trustworthy. Best bet... AVOID IT until further notice. Stick with the "Update" packages instead...

Notepad++ isn't too bad (don't know what kind of syntax hilite you want...). Links to Linux versions....
-
Yeah, but still wants to download the "definition updates".

Hmmm... may test this one out. "I'll gladly give you two grandchildren today for some peace tomorrow" (Wimpy)

Here is the Manual XP Unattended guide. Vista and Seven (AFAIK) are very much the same as each other and the methodology is in the Unattended subforum. BTW MS Security Essentials doesn't conveniently "unattend" install (tried already on an XP and gave up...)

DVD plays in Media Player Classic in WinXP, but not in Win98SE
submix8c replied to diamant's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Nero may have installed the decoders. A search on MPC and the message doesn't give any solution, so one would suspect... (Nero has decoders in the package for its Player - Cyberlink PowerDVD also...) ZDNet article... -
I repeat (for Win98SE - ref. post#42) that the AutoPatcher package goes up to Dec. 2008 and includes everything (literally!) that was available at that time except what I had noted. UBCD98SE (a topic removed - don't ask me about that) used the exact same modules except the "optionals" (i.e. non-HotFixes) that are in AutoPatcher. It's also customizable (e.g. you can add/remove items) provided you are well-versed in BAT scripts. I have used my UBCD98SE as recently as the 03/2011, Update V4 was still active, and... NOTHING SHOWED UP (AFAICR)!!! You might also compare everything within the package (the list is included for each Official/Unofficial) to the other available 98SE packages. All of the official files are original untouched MS packages (ref. "The Complete List..." also maintained by soporific), and most of the unofficial ones are directly from the sources listed in the Stickies. Some few others were "repackaged" (I have the SED files, btw) to work with the project. I prefer this one, the reasons being those I have just given. (Including using the "method" to create other-than-SE packages...) Be that as it may, your choices. ( What can I say? ) Wayback Machine still has the UBCD98SE topic (FIRST POST ONLY) in outline mode if you're interested (downloads unavailable... his website is defunct) in the gist of the parallelism (is that a word?). http://web.archive.org/web/20071218202832/http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=88008 edit: Apparently, Feb 2008 UBCD can still be obtained (Didn't support end in June 2008?). Call this a testimonial... (remember, AP98SE is included in UBCD98SE after a fashion). edit2 - Here is everything you need for an Unattended (no matter which 9x/ME you refer to). edit3 - DriverPacks topic. (Again, links are dead)

That's exactly what soporific's Autopatcher was.Unfortunately it hasn't been updated for several years now. ... for 98SE only! Also, I believe it is designed to be pretty much everything available at that time. And the only items that MIGHT be "update-able" are the "newer" GT 1gb RAM "fixes", the "newer" LBA48 (Large Hard Drive) "fixes", DX9, and IE6, and updated non-MS "additions" (Java, Adobe, Etc.).You would have to get it, install it, and look it over to determine what needs "updated" and how to do it. A lot of work went into it. It can also be used as a basis (the methodology) for the other aforementioned OS'... By all means, if you have all of the patches (sorted by OS, natch) and somewhere to upload, feel free. It might be worthwhile for the diehards on MSFN.

If its just a backup CPU, go on... Otherwise I have to agree with ( e ) all of the above...
-
I don't have the wherewithal to test this. Has anyone else? ZDNet story here. If true, then non-Microsoft multibooters may want to reconsider...
-
Here and here... OEMSCAN doesn't do the preactivation. It's all explained in the threads...

Ditto, ditto, and... DITTO!!! Running Server 2k3 as a general rule (also not dead, in spite of 2k8...).Granted, Seven is pretty nice, BUT... Folks have christened 95/98/ME dead as well - NOT!!! Why do you think MSFN exists? Besides, some peeps are po-folks and have really old hardware. We even have a few die-hard 95-ers on REALLY old hardware! Multibooters using Linux flavors as well... BTW, we're all really happy bunnies here (as jaclaz would say) with what lemons life hands us (flame-me-not...)

Will this help (re: low-vs-hi density)? More info related to RAM as well (and I HOPE it has no errors... it looks fairly correct)...
-
(Sub)Link given was to point out "why?" (a/l for me) for an nLite-ed. Aware of the "difference" and the MAME reference... Guess the OP must have some oddball reason for wanting to include it... A minimal "tools" partition maybe? (I just use LiveXP.)

I believe I still have a Busmouse Addin Board and the associated Busmouse lying around here somewhere.... Need it, Trip?
-
Not really sure why you would want MinLogon... This tells why (that at least I wouldn't want it).

OK... This appears to be the actual Recover DVD (?) / CD (?). (Which is it, BTW?) The I386 folder is strictly a Win-PE folder, unusable for your purposes and does NOT contain the files you need. (Research Windows Preinstall). This is the BOOT folder to restore with (allows booting to the Recover options). You will have to boot from it, restore the Advent PC (it SHOULD restore to Factory). The RESTORE files are the ".INP" files (PC-Angel). These files are "special" image files. and can only be accessed with PC-Angel software (forget finding it... it's EXTREMELY proprietary). After "Recovery", you will reboot to the newly-restored Windows (removing the CD/DVD, of course). The I386 folder you want will be on the HDD. Note that you might not have all of the drivers installed (unsure). Also note that the I386 folder may not have a set of OEMBIOS.* files in it (required to install to an Advent PC). Lastly, the WIN51 and WIN51IC files will also be needed. Hopefully, this gets a good starting point. Bear in mind that the CD/DVD is good only for the Laptop in question, but will work on the exact same model Laptop (not other models - will fail). Good luck and let us know what the Restore results are (based on this post's info) and get back to us. P.S. - to find that I386 folder (after Recovery), you will have to set the Windows "Folders Options" to allow viewing "Hidden and Systems Files/Folders" (they are "hidden" after all). EDIT - FWIW, here are the DRIVERS If you go "up" a level, you'll find that all of the Advent drivers are available by pull-down selection on Models (etc). I noted that in another topic, you mentioned the DVD Drive didn't work. You may have to transfer a DVD drive from another model into this one (read the Service Manuals on how-to) to get to this point. EDIT2 - From the Specs, it should have a Floppy, so putting the LAN drivers onto a Floppy (after unzipping, of course), you should be able to install them, connect it to your LAN network, enable sharing, and copy the remainder of the drivers that way to get it up-and-running. P.S. TURN OFF ANY/ALL HIBERNATION for the duration so it won't mess you up. Also, after Recovery, if any devices are not working, go into the System properties and tell us... EDIT3 - More drivers etc here EDIT4 - More info (note - also indicates webarchive links to get any official Gericom drivers/utilities). More interesting items (mirror) maybe from original Gericom CD-Rom

Still a problem... OEM CD is only good for Clean Install. You will still need a bootable CD to do it and the Boot files on your CD are (may not be) "standard". BTW, have you checked the ROOT of the CD (copied folder) for the appropriate files? - WIN51 - WIN51IP (if Pro) - WIN51IC (if Home) From what I can gather this is an old "PC Angel" Recover Disk. Your I386 folder may or may not be complete. Check for the files listed above, other wise you may be wasting your time trying it manually. BTW, you haven't mentioned which version (Home/Pro). Also, it might help to know the folder names in the I386 (not the file names, just folders), the file names in the PRELOAD (this could be PC-Angel ".INP images for restore or maybe addition software), and the I386DIST (which could be the drivers). edit - If this project is for the original Advent PC, look on it. It will have the appropriate I386 folder (usually in the ROOT of the C-drive) but maybe not several required files (which can be gathered from the Advent HDD from other folders). This laptop? edit (more info) - http://www.adventsupport.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1037 Ummm, that CD may not have what you need. (read the link). Lastly, the User's Guider/Service manual (340S8) here.

Does any computer hardware have built-in power protection?
submix8c replied to vipejc's topic in Hardware Hangout
?"Ten Bucks"??? And you have "best standby UPS"?I googled and the GOOD UPS are more in the range of $150-$450. And GOOD Surge Protectors roughly $50. Honestly, when the Consumer can buy a Dell (ugh!) Tower from Walmart with Win7 on it for about $400, why would they bother with that so-called "extra $10"??? Also, where would this $10-worth of components fit in a standard ATX case? In conclusion... Seriously, dude? (P.S. - certified Electronics Tech, so, no, I don't think so...) -
Just go to the 9x Sub-Forum and look around. That particular link (along with many others) is in the "Stickified" topic.BTW, you might note that the "Complete List" was last updated Dec. 15, 2008, well past the "dropped support date" of 2007. The only thing that might be beyond that would be IE6 "unofficial" and (possibly) other contributed/purchased "unofficial" fixes. It probably won't get much better than that.

Windows 98 First Edition crashing on login
submix8c replied to IPalindromeI's topic in Windows 9x/ME
What OS is on the other PC? What are the specs of this PC?
