  1. Guess I should have ask about the XP level you installed (my bad). 48-Bit LBA Support wasn't in XP until SP1 (Service Pack 1). Might I suggest you slipstream SP3 into the CD (methods widely used across the internet, in addition to a "simple mode" in nLite that does it the "easy" way"). SP3 includes both SP1 and SP2 (get the full installer). Also, did you change the jumper (curious)? It seems that that may have been required. Please respond and might I suggest you change the title of the Topic to "Solved - yada yada".
  2. Well, FWIW, I suppose that works, however there may have been an additional folder that may need to be kept. This is what I have (Dell Downloader is installed) - Local Settings\Application Data\ <-- (hidden folder) Local Settings\Apps\ <-- this folder (see Wiki link below) Local Settings\History\ Local Settings\Temp\ Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ Also, there are (were) many "Desktop.ini" (hidden/system) files that may have been needed. Within "Local Settings\Application Data\ ApplicationHistory" there are many "*.INI" files that may or may not be needed (I think maybe not but unsure - ComboFix may delete them). More "Apps" info on Wiki (MS ClickOnce Technology). If you have no other problems or issues, you might change the title to "Solved - yada yada", unless someone else indicates dire issues with this.
  3. YES! You bought a SATA-III (6g/s) and it only supports SATA-I (1.5g/s) and SATA-II (3g/s). Look at the documentation for your HDD - there should be a "limiter" jumper on it to down-level it to SATA-II. DO NOT connect it up again until you do this. Either the HDD or the MoBo will/may go bad...
  4. @$^#!!!!! Not necessarily. I understand now, but don't remember the terminology or the particular thread that describes it (jaclaz posted in the same topic). It's a "file" or "reference" within a special file. That's the one that needs removed. (Something about a Meta-thingy.) Sorry, can' help further (I'm old, ya know) but hang in there, there is probably a solution coming now that it's understood. FOUND IT!!!! There must be some kind of confusion going on... Have you tried the Safe Mode (never did say if you did or not...)? edit! http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=c41b38e843b797192a0e417f9afff924 Try the Safe Mode, DELETE the TEMP folder, EMPTY Recycle Bin, RECREATE TEMP folder and RUN A MALWAREBYTES SCAN. All while in Safe Mode... There IS a RUN/RUNONCE, etc in your registry as well... HAS to be! Regedit - in HKLM -and- HKCU in either/both Software/Microsoft/Windows/Currentversion/RUN (etc) that should NOT be there! Also get CCleaner and RUN it. P.S. in Malwarebytes run a FULL scan... (don't forget to Update your definitions)
  5. Have you run MalwareBytes in Safe Mode (F8)? AFAIK, it should run under Safe. It must have a "RUN" set in the Registry as well. Try that and also download/update SpyBot, set Advanced Mode, and look under "Tools/System Startup" for it and "disable" it if "Safe" doesn't work. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/winupd.exe-23850.html Hoping its not "hiding" elsewhere under an assumed name and "cloning" itself. If that doesn't work, come back and some other folks may be able to help further. edit - URP! allen2 beat me to it. P.S. DO NOT delete your TEMP folder indiscriminately. First, DELETE it, then "Empty Recycle Bin" (make it GO AWAY) , then go BACK and make a "new folder" called "TEMP" where the old one was deleted.
  6. Yes, I know all of the above, respect Sir... However, the last post I had placed indicated FREE fixes, including the said thread's IO.SYS patch and the SYSTEM.CB change, including the Large HDD patches. Since the combination of System.INI, System.CB, LLXX Patch (included in BHDD31, which also uses ME files and some patched files), and the said IO.SYS Patch worked for me, I suggested it. As far as "Not Free" patches there could be a "Warning" and make any FREE patches Optional to ensure that "Not Free" would still function. The 98SE Service Pack is, after all, FREE and it has been indicated that many options are OPTIONAL. Sorry to bust your chops on this ( I do like and respect you)... Many folks DO use your patches BUT some just don't have the funds. Please look again at the "WOOHOO" post I made.
  7. Have you looked at the IO.SYS thread? Scattered throughout are several additional Fixes for GT 1GiB Including Safe Mode and Phantom Hard Drives (I consider part of the Large HDD fixes). Find my posts as well (currently using all of them).
  8. Temporarily working on a project - will get back with you. At least you are up and running...
  9. I will not swear to this (having never tried it), but if the connections/wiring are correct and you don't over-Hz it (60hz is standard) plus use standard x-y values (resolution) that the LCD is capable of, then maybe it will be ok. IOW, you can't "overclock" it. Example - had a friend who always "toasted" old-style monitors by "stretching" the display for full-screen Excel Spreadsheets beyond what the monitor would do and they eventually went kaput. edit - There must be a Model Number on it. If you provide that, then maybe it can be better determined.
  10. Nice Christmas Present! Hope to some day become "Rich, Rich Fabulously Wealthy!" (Daffy Duck...) and do same... Thank you, Tain, from a grateful member!
  11. This one? First, fair warning - HD Audio drivers don't exist for Win 9x so you'll need an add-in card then disable the On-Board.Second, you've not installed Part#2 ChipSet Drivers(?) according to info found here. (Full Topic is here.) More on (defunct - i.e. links don't work) Driver Packs. I have them all but it's unknown if it'll "cure" your problem. Question - what is the source of the "drivers" you installed? (may help to sort this out). Also, could you possibly export, zip, and attach the "HKLM/ENUM" branch of the Registry? (this is where the Device ID's live). so they can be inspected? Either that or download and install Everest Home Edition and find the pertinent "Ven/Dev/Subsys" (etc) entries and report what they are? (I assume your BIOS is set to ATA/IDE mode and not SATA mode, correct?)
  12. Name yer pizen!!!! http://whisky.com/brands/index.html P.S. Leave your keys somewhere you won't find them until Jan. 1st...
  13. Buggy original version? Apparently a HotFix you needed to Request from MS.The WinME 3001 version is in this package. Try that and see if it "patches" the same. BTW, between each "test", did you start "fresh"? IOSYS98.EXE installs many other files. a. Full Package - ok b. PTCHCDFS - Against WHAT file (which one from where?) (along with (a.)?) c. Original "bug" version "patched" (using PTCHCDFS?) (along with (a.)?) Sorry, you are unclear in describing your methodology.
  14. Have you even searched MSFN? Click the GEAR icon at top right, next to "Search Box" above. I did and asked to search "Antivirus" then picked "Windows 98 forum" the clicked "search". Guess what? I found this. Please SEARCH FIRST before asking. ITS ALL HERE ALREADY!!!! You waste a lot of our time. Please do not until you can "search" no answers. I answer this way........ NO!!!!! Only AntiVirus that is still supported. LATEST do NOT support Windows 98SE or ANY OS less than Win2000/WinXP!!!
  15. Very confusing topic. Have you tried it yet? Only thing I can find is related to Asus EeePC...
  16. Heh heh... Already told you that... Live with it and be happy...Also, see THIS for another good change. Read all of thread - Patch also by "rloew" - fixes "False HDD Appears" when certain Partition Definitions. Please open new threads for help next time or stay in one thread . This clutters many good threads. Also, do not ask "please give me file" - change yours by instructions. P.S. If not part of problem, start new - example - "Problem XP and Win98 Boot" is new for you. Also use 'Search" above (little "gear" icon at top right) first. Old Saying - "Gods Help Those That Help Themselves." Peace!
  17. Reporting on Displayed RAM (not relevant to topic BUT since it's here, will post and "point" back to it elsewhere as necessary). I hadn't tried the "Safe Mode" fix (described above) until this AM. It failed with "insufficient memory to initialize windows" so I dug around, and only came up with the standard MS response about "MaxPhysPage". So I dropped it to "40000" (the "1gb limit") from "48000" in SYSTEM.CB and it worked. (note: I had changed BOTH SYSTEM.xxx to "48000" last night) Next, confused because RAM now showed 1017mb instead of the (yesterday) 1023mb, reviewed "Day to Day Running" thread and looked at xRayeR's configuration - Was in SYSTEM.CB [vcache] MinFileCache=32768 MaxFileCache=106496 ChunkSize=4096Was in SYSTEM.INI [vcache] MinFileCache=32768 MaxFileCache=261120 ChunkSize=4096I also had a line in CONFIG.SYS for "emm386" REM'd prior so I had uncommented it (consequently no problem with Normal Mode). Deciding to try xRayeR's, I removed the above two Sections and removed the CONFIG.SYS HIMEM.EXE parameter "/max=1048576". Rebooted to Safe and LOCKED! (Jeez, CLUELESS why it was there - not listed in the "Day to Day...") I decided that using Xeno86' VCache.VxD may be the culprit (as it affects MaxFileCache) so I renamed it, and tried again. Both Safe Mode and Normal Mode appear to function fine now. In addition, RAM now reports ~1143mb. Not sure whether any of the "changes" made will affect anything in the future, but Happy Bunny (again). Thoughts on any side-effects? ------ Maybe I should have started a new thread called "Experiences with RAM/Large HDD/Ghosts Appearing-SOLVED" - feel free to split into a new topic if warranted/time. (Probably should with relevant link to here, I inadvertently clobbered this one). Dencorso, maybe a change to my entries in the associated thread accordingly (including the SYSTEM.CB)? Side Note - currently running System-II; a "new" Dell AMD64 Dual-Core w/1.5GB on SATA-II in the works.
  18. WOOHOO!!! Finally got around to testing the rloew patch. (ref this. I am happy to announce that the "ghost" drive disappeared. Several other patches included, among those the BHDD31 package (referenced here) and the 6-step SafeBoot "fixes". I manually "Hex Edited" the IO.SYS for both this and the SafeBoot, created/modded appropriately for SafeBoot, backed up the "old" files, and copied all necessary files "over top" wherever necessary (didn't want to start from "scratch"). However, for some strange reason, I'm only showing 1023MB RAM (probably some other setting either BIOS or "other") but that's a different subject. Thank you all (especially rloew for his generous contributions, notwithstanding the others in said packages). Now on to installing Paragon's NTFS for Windows. Post made on my 98SE partition, booted into using Grub4Dos, in FireFox 2.0.0.20 with (nunya) v1.9.9.61 Add-On. As jaclaz would say, Happy Bunny! (please forgive the harsh SafeBoot link comments - at least the "method" is now clear as watered-down mud!) note: "mods" performed/checked from OUTSIDE Win98SE, so anyone seeing this, follow all given instructions
  19. THIS POST you ask same question about Max RAM. THIS POST says MAX IS ALL WITHOUT SPECIAL PATCH. EQUAL!!!NO, special patch NOT FREE - Look at website AGAIN! Trail HALTS OS after TIME!!! You must BUY! Only SOME other patches FREE! Others PAY! Look HERE (MAIN PAGE) and HERE. HERE lists SOME FREE and PRICES for any PAY FOR THINGS. rloew allowed to post here BECAUSE HELPS AND GIVES SOME FREE BUT NOT ALL FREE. rloew does NOT advertise "products" here so rloew is FOLLOWING RULES. READ ALSO RULES! YOU ARE BUMPING MANY TOPICS AND ASKING SAME QUESTIONS IN ALL!!! HERE I give answer to last question you ask From topic - THIS IS NOT GRUB4DOS! I ask in other topic for you to start NEW TOPIC. Go read it!!!
  20. FWIW, there's another independent project called RT7Lite. Not sure how many on MSFN can vouch for it as it is elsewhere and apparently still in development.
  21. ???? Now you throw Grub4DOS in to RAM solution??? MAKE A NEW THREAD - Grub4DOS is NOT to do with RAM!!! Make new thread in Windows 98 Forum and give ALL DETAILS OF WHAT YOU DO (where INSTALL Grub? MBR? Partition? WHERE? HOW?)!!! YOU MAKE NEW CHANGES BEFORE TEST RAM FIXES!(yes, VERY tired...)
  22. Because I set MaxPhysPage=40000 in system.cbYou can edit it to be MaxPhysPage=48000 and it'll see more RAM YOU USE MY SETTINGS FROM OTHER THREAD! DENCORSO AND ALL SAY MAXIMUM STABLE IS ABOVE NUMBER! SET SAME IN "SYSTEM.INI" - BOTH PLACES!!! As I said in other thread Win98 has MAX RAM CAN USE AND CANNOT BE FIXED WE HAVE NO SOURCE CODE!(tired.....)
  23. In addition Enter command - C: \ W98IOPAT.EXE ...... Y IO.SYS open [OK] Searching for HIMEM.SYS string ... [not found] The second sentence above, is how can the problem? Do you have met before? USE HEX EDITOR!!!! Win98SE will NEVER "see" more and CANNOT use ANY MORE THAN (CANNOT CHANGE THAT!) You MUST be using a LARGE program somewhere! WIN98SE HAS LIMITS! CANNOT FIX ALL!!! READ ALL BLUE THREAD LINKS IN THIS!!!NO MAGIC BULLETS TO MAKE EVERYTHING BIGGER!!!! WE HAVE NOT Win98SE SOURCE CODE!!! And I SEE you have posted in OTHER THREAD - YOU NOW HAVE MANY ANSWERS!!!!READ READ READ ALL LINKS IN LINK GIVEN ABOVE! Then you KNOW ALL!!!!
  24. Which? Do not know?We SEEN #34~#35 - INCOMPLETE CHANGES!Instructions at #35~#37. DO ALL OR WON'T WORK!!!! FORGET USE PATCH - USE HEX EDITOR INSTEAD! Inside IO.SYS REPLACE string "HIMEM.SYS" with "HIMEM.EXE" (NOT INSERT, BUT TYPE OVER TOP). These are MY changes (WORKS! I have 1.5G) Step#1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI [386Enh] MaxPhysPage=40000Step#2 Download and Install Xeno86 VCache.VxD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VCache.VxD <--here after install Step#3 Click Link and find - "HimemX v3.32" Download file and UNZIP with free 7-zip (FIRST ONE) Copy HIMEMX.EXE to "C:\WINDOWS" folder and rename C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.EXE <--HIMEMX.EXE RENAME TO THIS Step#4 Click Link and download Fix for Win98SE Language Install Fix (FIX is IO.SYS file YOU NEED) Step#5 Download xRayeR Fix to C:\ Reboot using "F8" Keyboard Key Select "Safe Mode COMMAND PROMPT ONLY" <-- NOT JUST SAFE MODE Enter command - C:\W98IOPAT.EXE -OR- Use Hex Editor while Normal Boot to change INSTEAD. In English Fix (from Step#5) using a Hex Editor I find "HIMEM.SYS" at Hex Offset A4F4. Here is Trial Hex Workshop. Find and Download "Hex Workshop v5.14" (last one that works with Windows 98SE). Any Hex Editor that works on Win98SE is OK. Step#6 CONFIG.SYS REM - added the following for GT 1gib mem device=c:\windows\himem.exe /max=1048576 /numhandles=64 /verbose REM - removed the following for GT 1gib mem REM device=himem.sysStep#7 (NEW STEP) C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.CB [386Enh] MaxPhysPage=40000 "MaxPhysPage=48000" is MAXIMUM GOOD VALUE! I use smaller. DO THIS OR NOT WORKING!!!
  25. THANX, CoffeeFiend! Wife may like that. Sounds good! Waiting for Christmas-oriented one-liners...
