  1. 1- I'm pretty familiar with 90's style , no . 2 - I didn't change any settings at all . I think it happened after I reinstalled Nvidia drivers. And the nice bug happened when I was using RTM. I can't replicate this. Got some time to test again , I'm pretty convinced SP1 (RTM) runs faster , overall better . I can clearly see the desktop is crystal clear . SP2 looks more like Win-7 , washed out , not clean , it is still better than win-7 , of course. I think I'll have a dual boot with Vista x64 SP1 and XP64 (RTM) with GTX980/Siemens.
  2. Thanks for the explanation . The absence of DWM is a big downside , that's for sure . I don't know what I did , it was so many attempts and testing procedures (trying various drivers , reinstalling again and again , etc) , but somehow I've managed to switch to "cartoonishly moving mode" instead of tearing . I do not know how to name it properly . It's like when I move a folder , it draws a new one (where I place it) , while keeping the folder in the previous position intact . In this "mode" the games that I run in windowed mode ran without any tearing , still slow , but without tearing . And now it's gone (the "mode"), after reboot . And I do not know how to get it back . Funny.
  3. Oh really !? Where is any valuable info in your reply and why do you think it is needed ? It's not the first time you've misinterpreted my posts . Do note , I didn't write "like" , and "upvote" is meant to move the post in the charts for people who need to find a quick solution. Now this is really funny how your absolutely worthless and hostile post is getting upvotes. Such "posts" do pollute this wonderful website , our beloved MSFN. Let me ask , do you have a special permission to write off-topic posts ? The rules do not apply to you ? I've noticed you have plenty of them with many being marked as <OT>. Are you a wise ancient ("old", like you said it yourself) Guru of some sorts ? Well, sorry if I missed that part. I would like to ask the moderators and the public to forgive me for going off-topic , I didn't start this and I'm sorry, but this time it's just too much. Please delete this post (and his too for being absolutely off-topic and obviously personal). EDIT : I've decided to attach this screenshot of the main page of "VistaLover" 's profile where 70% of his posts are marked as <OT> (off-topic) by the user himself . Maybe it is something for the moderators to consider.
  4. Great ! But why haven't you made an upvote for my post then ? BTW , our dear moderators may want to pin this post as a quick and proven fix for Vista users who got lost among all those numerous updates . @Dave-H , we have something for your consideration here , in my previous post.
  5. Actually, it's Power DVD we were talking about , but I totally understand it is easy to mix them up and the activation process is quite hard , if not unbearable with both. I've read that newer versions need to be activated for each codec , for example , to play x265/H265 (HEVC) with version 16 you need to activate it separately with a given number. Just ridiculous , I won't support them , that's for sure , but I see the customers are OK with this , like most of folks are OK with everything that's going on. In any case, I really appreciate your help, thanks and like from me.
  6. It got corrupted because of the numerous updates ! I use Vista from 2007 and never had any problems . If you need the ex-kernel , the only update that must be installed is KB4467700-x64. If you play DX 11 games - you need to install KB2117917 and KB971512. That's it ! You can also install VC redist and Frameowrk 4.5 . You do not need anything else, if you don't click suspicious links.
  7. I really appreciate , but I'm afraid you won't be able to test it yourself since all retail versions have a rather hard activation process and install a ton of bloatware (protections and the such) , not to mention you'd have to have a license. The version that came with the PC is much easier in this regard . It auto self-activates on this motherboard only . The version is 11.0.0.2516 . With all due respect to VLC , it just doesn't have that picture depth and sound quality and began to support DTS only recently. I'm not a Cyberlink employee , it's my own opinion and I really like that version . The newer ones are much , much worse , so I won't buy them.
  8. Well , it's strange . Like I said earlier , I have an absolutely clean x64 SP2 . This update installs without any problems . Then - boom - the kernel from December works ! Did you see , win32 said , as of now "only two level of updates April 2017 and March 2019" , right ? So this one has all of the needed files for it to work . Again , I'm not using it simply because I don't need it , not because it doesn't work or smth. Ex-kernel is a great achievement , I already said it many times.
  9. @ScrapMechanicFan2016 , try to install KB4467700-x64 from 2017-2018 or so , I remember when I tried one of the previous ex-kernel versions , it helped . But that was in November or December and I haven't tried any new versions and uninstalled everything. I do not like having anything on my PC that I do not use .
  10. The best dance music in this genre (dance , techno) existed only for a short amount of time . Somewhere between 1991-1994, maybe early 1995. It was fast and catchy , but not too loud to the point of complete distortion . Everything after 1995 sounded too flat and loud (loud not like "good" loud , but like an overload). Why ? Maybe it's because they began to use notebooks instead of real recordiing studios, maybe the governments decided that the music was too cool and people spent too much at the clubs instead of having children and constantly working. But it is a fact . You can listen for yourself and compare . Though , I would advise to use a real Hi-Fi/Hi-end system and cd-s. P.S. It was just dance, yes , exactly that - simple "dance" or "techno" , not this ugly new term "Eurodance" that surfaced in 2000s. I totally understand that the 99% of that kind of music came from Holland (yes , it was Holland , not "The Netherlads), Germany , Austria , Italy , Belgium , Denmark and some other Western European countries , but this term "eurodance" just doesn't sound well . For those who don't remember , try to listen to the albums mostly from 1992-1994. 2-unlimited (Holland) , Masterboy (Holland), LaserDance by Erik Van Vliet (Holland), U-96 (Germany), Mo-Do , (Germany) , CAPELLA (Great Britain & Italy) (why in caps ? , it's a marvel , but no later than early 1995), Technotrax (many compilations came out under this name) , F.M. Present Jean Jane , Einstein Doctor DJ. If someone's interested , I can surely suggest more . And the special : Red Zone (Sega) game soundtrack by a super talented Danish composer Jesper Kyd. This game and music is not advisable to watch/listen for some members with the "modern" point of view, dictated by the modern media , esp. who thinks it's "their own opinion" , as it may hurt their feelings , since the game is from the good ol' days when we all knew who the real enemy is. This warning here is obvious , just do not watch and ignore . If someone will start off-topic political conversations , I will just block/ignore . Respect and be polite. All have a nice day/night.
  11. The programme is Power DVD (circa 2009). It was supplied with the PC . As of now, I have that dubious "feature" disabled. But that's not a permanent solution. That'ss not the programme that makes me wonder , that's all those firewalls that allow such kind of traffic . As far as I know, they have that MDNS "casting" in Power DVD for a long time , since version 7 or so.
  12. I'd like to say that everything went back to normal for me. Menus are working and all is fine . Just forgot to write earlier , thanks for the fix ! I did not change the browser , I'm on Chrome x64 and Vista x64.
  13. The founder of Google was born in Russia : Sergey Mikhaylovich Brin , born August 21, 1973 in Moscow, Soviet Union (!). From Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergey_Brin Should I comment on this ? I think no , that information alone must be enough. Dear , @ArcticFoxie don't waste your breath , they will continue to use Yandex , Google , Kaspersky (graduated from the KGB Higher School in 1987) and other russian software. The younger generations just don't understand that , since they stopped telling them in the movies about KGB and whatnot. Did you see the reaction in the ex-kernel topic when I advised against Kaspersky ? Only a couple of people liked ... P.S. Respect to you and like from me. I'm really glad some people like you still exist , that gives some hope, but that doesn't mean we should relax , though.
  14. VLC 2.2.5.1 doesn't support any multichannel audio tracks . There is no way to bypass DTS Master Audio (HD MA) or even ordinary DTS to receiver with any 2.x.x version. Even simple Dolby Digital 5.1 or TrueHd can't be played. So there's no way to use it for Blu-ray playback, unless you watch movies on a laptop or a PC with 90's style speakers with audio downsampled from HD Blu-ray track to simple PCM 2.0.
  15. There is absolutely no need in any accusations ! I think some answers here are just plain rude . What do you mean "he's lying" , it's at least rude . He doesn't owe you anything . It's his personal business (location and nationality) . The question of the topic does he spell like a 12 year old , it's not a rogue interrogation , but looks like one. Leave this fella be.
  16. I like your post , though blocking is not easy , even with a good firewall . As one may guess , they (devs of firewalls) may (surely) work in conjuction with corporations. I have a good example , I will just leave the link here , I do not like double posting . That's just one example , I have others . Any ideas ? https://msfn.org/board/topic/62611-ssdp-discovery-service-ssdpsrv/?do=findComment&comment=1195214
  17. Got some time to test on my other system with Haswell : Nvidia CPL still says "PCI-e" with XP and "PCI-e gen 3.0" with Vista (3.0 because this is a newer mobo). The games still feel much slower on XP. Also , there is a terrible screen tearing when I move any folder across the screen , the same with all of the games that I try to run in windowed mode. Is it supposed to be like that on XP ? V-sync and tripple buffering aren't any help. The same is with Win7 when aero is turned off . By the way , quality wise Win7 is on the same level with XP. The picture is flat and washed out . Games are cut off by several mm when launched in windowed mode , but this is not the case when running them on Vista. This is my first experience with XP . I skipped XP and went from 2000 to Vista in 2007.
  18. Your samples (mp3, mp4) play absolutely fine with VLC-3.0.12-win64 on 64-bit Vista without any updates , yes , I have no updates and I have no extended kernel. The test was done on real hardware. Also , tested DTS HD MA files and it plays them fine on my receiver. But louder than the older versions . Suggestion : uninstall updates.
  19. From what I can tell , English is not the OP's mother tongue . Perform a simple search and you'll see that "duel" instead of dual is used by Indians. I can easily tell if someone is Dutch , German , English (British) , Italian , Swedish (by the looks and sometimes by the style of one's writing), but when it comes to Asians (Indians are Asians, right ? ) ... well this is not my strongest side. So don't judge if I'm wrong , but I think the guy from the "duel boot" video is Indian . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-m5KUeb_o0 Or here some "duels" too. https://noobsplanet.com/index.php?threads/duel-boot-triple-boot-or-quad-boot-with-hackintosh.11/ https://www.reddit.com/r/hackintosh/comments/gs0s1o/create_duelboot_windows_on_hackintosh_drive/ Though , it doesn't mean the OP is not from US , he may be Indian , but currently living in the States. Nowadays there are a lot of Indians in Canada , UK and US too.
  20. Where did you see such config ? Anyway , I'm not familiar with modern laptops , sorry. And my notebook from 2013 already had PCI-e 2.0. On one of my desktops (where I test XP64 dual-boot with Vista) I can observe some games can easily reach and stay at 86% for some time on PCI-e 2.0 with Vista and GTX 980, but with XP64 it's like around 30% only. For my precise config just scroll back and replace GTX Titan with 980 . I still think that even if GPU-z detects PCI-e 2.0 with XP64 , it seems like Nvidia drivers just can't take any advantage of it on XP. Otherwise why would Nvidia CPL say "PCI-e" with XP and "PCI-e gen2.0" with Vista ?
  21. Wolfenstein: The New Order has rather simple demands . The recommended graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6850 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 with VRAM 1GB , so there's no way it can saturate PCI-e 3.0 or even 2.0. I'm guessing this is the reason it feels smooth on XP. OK , GPU-Z shows , but nVidia CPL not , why ? Seems quite strange , the same result with several different people on absolutely different hardware. Yet again , if I reboot to Vista the CPL will show the highest version of PCI-e. This is on the same drivers version . I've tested with almost all known drivers . By the way , 368.81 is the weakest among them , asdf2345 uses 347.25 for his XP and it's the wise choice , I would also recommend 347.09 and 344.60 for 900-series. But yet again , you've just confirmed my discoveries . XP is slower even with DX9 games. Why do I need this ? It's just out of curiosity , I've never used XP and decided to try it. I went from Windows 2000 to Vista in 2007 (skipped XP completely).
  22. Yes , I know , thanks cap. My GTX 980 is 4GB , yours is shown as 8GB. And the dude is talking about 600-series ancient cards in the wrong topic.
  23. And about this "test" : these are the weaker cards , much weaker than GTX 980. So PCI 1.1 is enough in this case. GTX980 is like 80% faster than GTX680. Don't forget about the onboard VRAM . 8GB vs 2GB . See the screenshot by asdf2345. https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-980-vs-Nvidia-GTX-680/2576vs3148
  24. First off , I'm not the only one who is "mistaken" , scroll back and you will see the same issue has been reported by uCyborg and asdf2345 . Their Nvidia CPL also shows PCI-e ver. 1.0. Second : why would you even mention Kepler cards ? It is off-topic . This is only about 900 and 1000 series, asdf2345 and I have tested on GTX 980. Forget about my Titan , it was used only to confirm the issue with XP64 not detecting PCI-e 2.0, besides , asdf2345 has tested on a laptop. As you can see , it has nothing to do with my mobo.
  25. It's with all DX9 games that I play (not just one) . Vista works fine with the same driver versions , XP64 has like 30-45% slower framerate. No wonder , 'cause it shows PCI-e 1.0 only...
