  1. What comes around, goes around. I basically view it all as NO DIFFERENT than FIREFOX (and Linux) mentality from the 90s and 2000s. We have ALL seen it over the years, ask a non-Firefox (or Windows) question, and you are riduculed and mocked and told to "switch to Firefox" (or "switch to Linux"). Again - what comes around, goes around. BUT... If we are to be truly honest, even "this" XP USER did that to a Win10 Users just a couple months ago! My own sister was having issues with Edge on Win10 and with her wireless printer and my FIRST reply to her was I DON'T HAVE THOSE ISSUES ON MY XP. She still have printer issues - but her Edge issues were resolved by having her try a roytam browser and by trying official Pale Moon (she ended up chosing the latter). All fine and dandy to me - I've always always always felt that browser choice is ENTIRELY up to the browsee's PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

  2. Thanks for posting, @Jody Thornton. To me, the thread looked like just a straw man attack on Win XP: what happens if I turn off the firewall and connect my PC directly to the Internet without an AV program or even a router for protection? Oh, wow; bad things! Well, obviously the fault must be Win XP, not the fact that I turned off the firewall and connected my PC directly to the Internet without an AV program or even a router for protection! As for New Moon, there was just that one comment - and he seemed mostly angered by those who ask for NM support at the PM forum, despite the fact that @roytam1 and the rest of us constantly tell anyone who'll listen not to do that! Certainly not @roytam1's fault.

  4. by btarunr Apr 24th, 2024 10:38 Microsoft over late-Tuesday started distributing the KB5036980 optional update to Windows 11 users, which effectively makes the operating system adware (software that displays ads to support its author). The update gets the Windows 11 Start Menu to display ads in the "Recommended" section that suggests apps and games for you to download from the Microsoft Store, subscribe to Copilot Pro, etc. While the update is currently optional, the changes contained in it will be made part of next month's "Patch Tuesday" update. This wouldn't be the first time Microsoft is advertising software, the OEM versions of Windows 11 can be customized by PC manufacturers to pre-install bloatware, or suggest apps or services for users to buy within the Start or Apps menus. You usually uninstall the pre-installed bloatware, and dismiss recommendations. Today's update is different, in that even the Retail versions of Windows (without the bloatware) start receiving ads. Luckily, these ads are not inescapable, you can disable them. Head over to Settings > Personalization > Start, and uncheck the toggle that reads "Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more." source: https://www.techpowerup.com/321849/windows-11-now-officially-adware-as-microsoft-embeds-ads-in-the-start-menu Members' thoughts on this?

  5. ... However, yet another proof of how biased are most PM forum members towards "those XP users" ; the last comment on the thread you linked is by a member called "Night Wing"; he writes: His remark is totally out of context, though - but his hatred towards "XP users" is such that he can't even read right ; https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal68/issues/366#issuecomment-1913684572 i.e. GitHub member "NS-Clone" was referring to JustOff's [old] "legacy" extension "Modify-HTTP-Response", which is indeed an XUL-type one, supported in Firefox (<=56), official Pale Moon and SeaMonkey, but NOT supported in Mypal68 ; IOW, Night Wing's last sentence is nothing more than a product of anti-XP "frenzy"...

  7. And for those over there who don't want to believe it and to be on-topic again, New Moon 28 is still my daily browser. It's blazingly fast on my old hardware, not on modern, bloated sites, of course. But on MSFN, for example, this browser is 'umpteen times faster than e.g. Thorium. And I am a very experienced Windows XP user. I know all the essentials and much more about this operating system after more than 20 years. I have never had a serious compromise of my system. Everything that is said about the dangers of using Windows XP today and in the past is largely based on ignorance and propaganda. But there are people who believe everything they are told. And if you look around the world, things are getting worse and worse despite a supposedly higher standard of education than before.

  8. I don't know what exactly you are going to take my word for. But I know exactly what I'm talking about. This guy likes to write disparagingly, especially when it comes to MSFN, old operating systems and New Moon. Rudeness and negativity are the pillars of its character. Guys like this trollbat were the reason why I gave up my account in the PM forum and never posted there again. Good decision.

  9. "The comment" looks exactly how this poor soul generally thinks, hates and writes comments about all MSFN related. It never ceases to amaze me what certain intellectual low-flyers are allowed to write there. Apart from that, the ignorant has no idea about Windows XP. And then it also wants to be a developer ...

  11. If that's supposed to be a joke, then it certainly wasn't your best. If you meant it seriously, then I'm afraid you're completely out of place here. Just a hint. Supermium -> Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes. So, either old browsers for old hardware under old OSes or browsers (not the newest ones) for more modern hardware under old OSes. Your choice, old or old.

  13. All @heinoganda's, @Thomas S.'s, @cmalex's proxy versions and also my packages of ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu are based on whenever's ProxHTTPSProxyMII. All of them can be considered secure, of course. Or do you think I would offer here unsecure proxy packages? And first of all, credits to the original developer whenever.

  16. ... I guess "we"'re moving in circles here, aren't "we"? If you don't want to employ a local PAC script after all and you want to use ProxyMII in 360EE by selectively (manually) enabling it on the (now two) problem sites, no extension is required; the options have been already presented to you by both AstroSkipper and me: 1. Configure IE8 to use ProxyMII (its FrontServer) just for secure connections - then, manually enable this configuration in 360EE by setting "Proxy -> Use IE proxy" for the two "problem" sites, or 2. Configure 360EE to use ProxyMII (its FrontServer) directly (i.e. leaving IE8 out of this) and then manually enable this configuration, just for your two "problem" sites, by selecting "Proxy -> localhost:8079" (see image attachments in my previous reply just above) when visiting the affected sites ...

  17. That's not the issue at all. Most of developers and manufactors have stopped supporting Windows XP, and Windows 3.11, of course. That's not the problem at all. But to trash and ridicule special forks for older OSes such as New Moon 28, which is excellently maintained by @roytam1, is a no-go and shows a fundamental lack of respect.

  18. The PM forum can take a leaf out of MSFN's book. We welcome everyone. You can get help here even if you don't use Windows XP or other older operating systems. For example, my thread "Extensions and custom buttons for UXP browsers - Corrections, modifications, adjustments, and special recommendations" is open to anyone who uses legacy extensions, whether in New Moon 28, Pale Moon or whatever compatible browser. I also don't care whether the poster in question uses Windows 7, Windows 10 or even the crappy Windows 11. He will not be verbally punished in any way, even if I personally do not favour these OSes. That's how it has to be. But these Fright Wing and trollbat types from the PM forum won't understand that. Their horizons aren't good enough for that.

  19. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but this sounds "bad" to me. ie, one can "google" without the gstatic trackers, one can "bing" without the azureedge trackers. One should be able to "x" without the x trackers.

  23. Even if we got HEVC pass-thru working (on PCs with hardware HEVC decoding) it wouldn't help. You'd need the newest Widevine version to watch DRM-protected streams. No realistic chance of that happening on a browser targeting older OSes.

  27. Most people probably find this rather boring. But the mainboard of this computer is from 2000 and the CPU from 2004, and I assembled almost all the components of this old computer myself. I rebuilt the case, repaired the mainboard and due to air cooling improvements, no hard drive has died since then. I have a very personal relationship with this computer, so to speak. It runs super stable and just won't stop working. And to be ontopic again, Thorium runs amazingly well on this computer in contrast to Supermium, where the page load behaviour is much worse. Very often the loading process simply hangs with 100% CPU utilisation.

  28. Do you talk about their X-Launcher? In the case of the paf version from PortableApps, these entries are only written temporarily to the registry. After closing the browser, they are written back to a local reg file and then removed from the registry. So, nothing to be worried about. Unfortunately, Supermium does not run fluently on my old hardware.
    1 point
  29. No, I don't. You wanted to know for which extensions would be written entries to the registry. And I answered that all Supermium (Chrome) browsers do that, when installing extensions, either permanently when installed by installer or temporarily when fully portable. So, it doesn't matter whether you use or prefer installers or not.

  32. Thanks for the flowers! However, the list is still not complete. There are further security and antimalware programmes targeting Windows XP that still need to be written about. The lack of time alone is the limiting factor, though.
    1 point
  33. It doesn't matter which one. When the Supermium installer is used from GitHub, it writes for each extension which is installed an entry under HKLM and HKCU -> Software -> Supermium. In the portable PAF version from PortableApps, these entries are only temporarily written into the registry and are stored locally in the programme folder when Supermium is closed as it is usual in PAF versions from PortableApps.
    1 point
  34. If someone is interested in Supermium as a fully portable application, then have a look here: https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/supermium-portable It was already mentioned here in this thread and has just been updated. In any case, extracting the Supermium executable from GitHub (win32) and using the starter script to call up the main programme does not lead to a real, portable installation, especially when it comes to extensions whose entries have to be written into the registry. And Thorium isn't fully portable, either.
