  1. I am the developer of Basilisk as of about a year ago. Moonchild is no longer involved with Basilisk directly. I think you should focus on MyPal 68 for now until you think it is stable enough to divide time between two browsers. Until then people can always use Serpent if they need a Firefox 52 type browser for Windows XP. I use Serpent on my Windows 2000 gaming PC with the BWC extended kernel. I'm obviously biased since I am the developer of Basilisk, but it would be cool to see Centaury continue or restart development at some point in the future if you ever have the time.

  3. After all this time, does AC Valhalla run on Windows 8.1? On one hand, you need directx12 and windows 8.1 is only compatible with directx11.1. On another, perhaps a fix exists? Please let me know.

  4. Hello @feodor2! I would be very happy if Mypal 68 was completely finished first. There are still a few things missing, such as automatic updating of extensions, Internationalisation & Localisation, and so on. But I would be very pleased about further development on Centaury and Waterfox, too. The more different choices in Windows XP, the better. Especially if the coder is such talented as you.

  5. Besides, more and more software will rely on that function, you wouldn't want to use only chrome 117 on your 8.1 OS, would you? Right, you would want games, photoshop, etc. Even now, for many major software 1803 is the cut-off minimum, so 1809 is the sweet point right now. But like I said earlier, Chrome is open source, so people are welcome to prove me wrong, and I'd be glad to see it!

  6. Maybe it works now, but what about later? You want someone to waste enormous amounts of time porting something that already 8 years old? From what I see in their development, they are going the route of increasing the dependencies on the newer memory functions, which was not yet widely used in the early Windows 10 releases. TH2 version (1511) is from 2015, windows 8.1 is from 2013, do the math.

  7. I use Serpent 52.9 as a direct replacement for my Fireferret 52.9 which is defunct now, besides it's got the highest scores on html5test... Anyway, please do continue to take good care of basilisk because it's very useful as Serpent for the classic systems. I simply despise the current operating systems they're peddling as "new" just because of the latest facade they've conjured up and bolted it on a pig.

  9. From my research, WD is simply not capable to produce disks of any capacity above 6TB. I have WD60EFAX (6TB SMR), it's fine, despite the new not so popular SMR tech. It's still too new to tell about the longevity.

  10. Recently got myself a rebranded WD (previously made by Hitachi), it's of course identical, 10TB WD 7200rpm. Very Noisy! Looks like it has "smart defrag" made by the device. I'm not happy with the purchase at all. Full specs: HGST WD Ultrastar DC HC510 10TB 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 3.5" Helium Platform Enterprise Hard Disk Drive - HUH721010ALE604 (0F27606) Price approx 250-300 Euros.

  11. I also tried to reactivate Malwarebytes Anti-Malware v2, but every time I wanted to update the virus definitions, I got the message: "Unable to access update server". The reason seems to be a certificate problem. This is the official statement: For fun, I also tried a connection via my TLS 1.3 proxy, unfortunately also without any success. The version I tried was Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.2.1.1043. The last database version was apparently 2022.5.20.4. Rest in peace!

  13. Don't these browsers simply respect your choice for HTTP rather than switch to HTTPS whenever possible? BTW, http://html5test.com/ doesn't respond to Upgrade-Insecure-Requests header. Also, when the main site is not the issue, eg. api.whichbrowser.net in this case, you can visit the security settings, the dialog with certificates, on the Servers tab, you can add an exception if you want the browser to ignore the expired certificate. Not in this case I think. BTW, these browsers block insecure (meaning HTTP) active content by default (scripts). There's an override in about:config->security.mixed_content.block_active_content. --- Regarding 2FA, yeah, not a fan of having online services tied to another device or anything else beyond a password, which I think is still safe if the user is mindful. But banks enforce it because EU wants to and it seems like switching banks more likely than not just means you need another app. Maybe there are still banks that offer to send a SMS rather than having to rely on an app which has to have encrypted stuff stored on the device and if that stuff is gone, you're locked out. Though it's the same with SMS if the phone goes kaput, but at least no worries about activating the damn app.

  25. There's a DSDT & SSDT editor (IDE) on Github for this purpose: https://github.com/ic005k/Xiasl (block it in the firewall to prevent its Internet check) Another older DSDT Editor: http://web.archive.org/web/20161108180259if_/http://olarila.com/dsdt/DSDTEditor_Linux_Windows.zip You should then be able to edit your SSDT/DSDT and load patched versions using a boot-time loader: https://github.com/jslegendre/ACPIPatcher Or you can also use Clover, OpenCore, or other loader of choice. Some quick tips: CondRefOf function is also used to verify the return of _OSI "Windows 2009" is Windows 7 & "Windows 2013" is Windows 8.1 Lookup "If (_OSI" or "If ((_OSI" to quickly locate the blocks that have a system check WIN7 is a constant that cans also be searched ACOS & ACSE variables seem to matter, they have to also be modified OSYS is the variable that gets checked the most in the OS installed locks Vista is named with the WLG constant There's a DRS3 variable but only set for Windows 10 RS3 & later I made a patched version of your DSDT that makes Windows 2006 & 2009 (Vista & 7) behave as if it was Windows 8.1 (2013). It also returns Windows 8.1's OSYS value for Vista & 7 which will be able to unlock more ACPI objects. https://www.udrop.com/Kn0y/dsdt-patched.zip (md5: 4d22eb9bedc63efb618aaeef84ffb9db) Try using the normal version and if any problem then the 'no-optimization' one. I also compiled GeorgeK1ng's version of NTOSKRNL_Emu incase you need to mod the Intel HID driver. https://www.udrop.com/Kn0H/NTOSKRNL_Emu-GeorgeK1ng-version.zip (md5: a054a8ba9d05e587f3ac0f409d9e25e5) dsdt-patched.zip NTOSKRNL_Emu-GeorgeK1ng-version.zip

  27. Hi, I try to install fresh from my 200 Euro expensive original win10 Home version 1703 from March 2017, on my Asrock z370 k6 fatal1ty board. Crazy, install stops, because this original USB stick from Microsoft shows unreadable sectors. And it is write protected, so no chance for any repair. Nice from Microsoft. Ok, after crazy search for this 1703 german version of this win10, I find 15063.0.170710-1358.rs2_release_svc_refresh_clientcombined_ret_x64fre_de-de_d6cd31298648aab2ff081004ceff2ffceb7aab64.esd on Microsoft Servers. There is also a 32 bit version of this 1703 version in german 15063.0.170710-1358.rs2_release_svc_refresh_clientcombined_ret_x86fre_de-de_52c33a275f77116954abe5f508d1254a49f5fe20.esd Then I build from it via this tool an *.iso for 64 bit. esd-decrypter-wimlib-63 From this I get the *.iso 15063.0.170710-1358.RS2_RELEASE_SVC_REFRESH_CLIENTCOMBINED_OEMRET_X64FRE_DE-DE.ISO I make an bootable USB stick, using Rufus. And voila, there installs win10 home 1703 without any problems. At once I click on the nice file from @mjd79 wushowhide.diagcab and can select there, not to install win 10 22H2. And now, all my problems with crazy Updates for my compi are gone. Very interesting to know, how many millions of hours are gone thanks to Microsoft on this crazy crazy stupid Update behavior. For example, now all devices in Device Manager are correct installed. And the Update offers me also the Nvidia driver for my Nvidia 730, which was not shown in the "last" win10 version Dietmar

  29. The versions v1, v2 and v3 of Malwarebytes each have different formats in which the virus definitions are stored. Although MBAM v1 and v2 store the virus definitions in the file rules.ref, these files still differ. MBAM v3 has completely different files for storing virus definition called rules.mbdb, and additionally the files wprot.mbdb and wprot2.mbdb. In any case, their virus definitions cannot be exchanged among each other. Cheers, AstroSkipper

  30. That's absolutely correct! Another, nice example is SpywareBlaster 4.6 which was the last version compatible with Windows ME. Updating of the definition files stopped when the version 5.0 was released. The most recent version is 6.0. When updating the definition files in SpywareBlaster 6.0 under Windows XP, they can be used in the version 4.6 under Windows ME without any problems. BTW, SpywareBlaster is on my internal list, and I will write an article about it soon.
    1 point
  31. Yep! No problem using most recent definition updates for an old version as long as the format is compatible. PS: I agree capitalisation is annoying, hard to read, and actually means shouting in forums. Therefore, it is considered impolite.

  33. At least for 7 you can have the bootloader on floppy disk, if you want, still it would be BOOTMGR+BCD. Windows NT6+ can only be booted by BOOTMGR (or bootmgr.efi in case of EFI BIOS), which corresponds to NTLDR, the issue, as you highlighted, is managing the configuration file which is the BCD, which corresponds to the good ol', plain, boot.ini.. The BCD file is a binary (actually it is a Registry hive) and MS only provides (inconvenient/complex) command line tools to manage it. You actually need BOOTMGR and BCD, so you might want to look at (third party) tools that allow an easier editing/changing of the BCD. I can suggest you: Bootice http://reboot.pro/index.php?showtopic=21956 Bellavista http://www.zezula.net/en/fstools/bellavista.html Visual BCD Editor https://www.boyans.net/ Lilo won't help you at all. Grub (now GRUB2) is (IMHO) overly complex, in case you want to make a "bridge" between your current NTLDR+BOOT.INI and the BOOTMGR+BCD of your new installs I suggest you to use grub4dos instead which is much simpler to install (or not install as it can be chainloaded from NTLDR+boot.ini). jaclaz

  35. Thank you for clarifying! So, Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.4.40 is the last version working under Windows XP and still allows updating its database. Good to know that and noted! It was already on my internal list. But, due to your confirmation, I will write an article about it soon and present it here as an option for Windows XP. Thanks again! As I already said, you are really helpful here.

  36. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware v1 Free/Pro (compatible version with SSE only CPUs) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a high performance anti-malware application that thoroughly removes even the most advanced malware and spyware. With effective, quick scans and malware removal capabilities, this program is the perfect addition to your PC's defences. It is still XP-compatible and can be used in two versions, Free or Pro. The full version of the product includes a number of key features, including the ability to schedule updates and scans, and most importantly, a real-time malware protection module that blocks malicious processes and websites before they even start. Furthermore, this antimalware programme supports old computers with a CPU lacking of the SSE2 instruction set. Features: Here is a screenshot of a comparison between Free and Pro version: Homepage: https://web.archive.org/web/20130618025654/http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Version number: 1.75.0.1300 Date of release: 09.04.2013 System requirements: Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7 Release notes: Review: https://www.ghacks.net/2013/04/10/malwarebytes-anti-malware-1-75-update-adds-archive-scanning/ Download links: Installer: Installer of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75.0.1300 Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Database Update: mbam-rules-2019.10.17.zip Installation: Remove any old installation of Malwarebytes! Run the installer mbam-setup-1.75.0.1300.exe provided by the first link above, but do not start the programme directly after installation has been finished! Now, execute the file mbam-rules.exe which is inside the file mbam-rules-2019.10.17.zip provided by the second link above! This will update the installation and bring it up to date as of 17.10.2019. Be sure to deactivate the automatic programme update to avoid receiving an unwanted programme upgrade! Finally, select your other options and update the virus definitions via the Update programme tab! If updating doesn't work directly, try again until it works! From now on, you will receive the latest virus definitions. Explanation: The manual, offline Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Database Update not only updates the virus definitions, but also changes the internal update server addresses. This step allows the programme to access the update server again. Screenshots: Trial version: Free version: Pro version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75.0.1300 is the last release of the version 1. It can be used as an offline scanner or, if the user own a licence, as an antimalware programme with real-time protection, especially on old computers which lack of the SSE2 instruction set, i.e., SSE and not more. It is very lightweight, low on resources and can be used in other Windows XP systems, too, of course. I used it in the past and was fine with it. And, I will install it on my old Athlon XP computer. And finally, thanks to @Monroe for reporting that his installation of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75.0.1300 is still receiving most recent definition updates in 2023. Greetings from Germany, AstroSkipper

  37. :OT I use the well-known, very good screenshot programme Hardcopy from sw4you. Another German software and absolutely great! I use it for more than 20 years. It is free of charge and still XP-compatible. I save all screenshots in the file format PNG and upload them to an image hoster. The hoster I use is postimage. It works as it should and is free of charge in standard mode. You have to register there, of course. :END OF OT

  38. I remember Malwarebytes updating to a newer version when I didn't want a newer version. Messed up a couple of times till I got everything figured out back then. I never liked version 2.0 anyway ... too complicated as I remember. Version 1.75.0.1300 was small and simple to use. Thanks for posting the v1.75.0.1300 link information.

  39. I also have the Pro version since it was reasonable to get and Malwarebytes said at the time that 'def updates' would still be available as newer versions were released. I decided I didn't care for 'the real time protection' running all the time. I went back to the free version since I really just wanted to scan downloaded files.

  40. HTTPS Everywhere, perhaps? (After all, that's what it's supposed to do.) That extension is no longer developed. "Modern" browsers don't need it, but I think it's still useful on older browsers (or browsers based on them, like ours). Usually you want the https: version if available. Luckily, it can be disabled for specific sites like this one. And after a couple of reloads, it works! Strangely, though, HTTPS Everywhere didn't force an https: connection when using the IP address; only when using the host name.

  44. Yes, agree , something's really fishy about all of this. Mark my words , Ukraine is not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is to strike the Western countries . I do respect the will of Ukrainians to fight for freedom , I'm terribly sorry for their children and cities ! Yet I still don't trust them. Did you notice how desperately they want to join the EU ? Shall we be accepting yet another KGB nest ? I mean , look at Prague , it's a well known KGB nest ! Now look at SBU (Ukrainian analogue of FSB) . It was created from the ashes of the soviet KGB . Also , notice they are quite kind to the captured russians. I'd say strangely kind. Now look, Russia already got Belarus under full control as a puppet state . What we are seeing now is an attempt to re-create the USSR and strike the West this all of it's power ! Russia alone would be too weak to do that without the nukes . They play their card , for sure ! I wouldn't be surprised if they had some sort of secret talks to push this ex(?) communist country to us as a "poor child of freedom" so the KGB spies would obtain no visa pass to freely roam the West . Now we could guess , is it only Russia behind this or China also ? And a couple of examples from recent history . Ukrainians and all soviet citizens in their military got zero problems invading Afghanistan in 1979 and bomb the hell out them , like they did in Finland in 1939 , etc. They still speak their bloody (russian) language ! Why would they ?!?! It's like more than 32 years since no one forces them to learn it at schools ! Yet I still hear all young Ukrainans speak it freely in the videos . Why ? EXCLAIMER: This is not an anti-Ukrainian statement . I demand the war stops immediately and the russians pay for all of the damages done . I respect Ukraine's independence , of course . Yet I don't want to see that country in the EU and NATO . I shall vote against it , like I did in the past. I , as a Dutch tax-payer, can only send them help . That's it. IMPORTANT: All of the weapons we send there can and will be just easy trophies for the reds and used against us later ! Don't forget they got zero tech of their own . So they will surely steal our western tech , like they always do.

  48. The fact that it uses an ancient version of Resource Hacker without support for x64 stuff and that the wfpdisable.exe it comes with doesn't work on XP x64 are probably it's biggest issue. I haven't found a way to edit the contents of the installer to replace these two, and manually editing all the system files is highly error-prone.
