  2. Hello Windows Updaters, here are some news. THE NEWS WIndows Update v3: The Windows Update v3 website is still experiencing issues, and we're working to solve them. However, there's an url : http://windowsupdate.overrender.com/R1201/v31site/default.htm (the website is still work in progress). We also discovered the Windows Update Catalog v3 (for update from Windows 95 to Windows 2000 Service Pack 2). WIndows Update v4: Windows Update v4 is missing the results.asp page. Without this page, you simply can't install updates. The Windows Update Catalog is not working at all. If any of you find the good results.asp, send me a private message and I'll try it. This would save us a long time of coding the page. WIndows Update v5: Windows Update v5 is now available in 22 languages, all included in the same folder (v5consumer). Once the pictures will be done, the Windows Update v5 pack will be released. If anyone wants to help us with translating the pages in any other languages (like Japanese, Chinese), send me a private message or join the Discord server. Any of you can help us. Don't worry, this project is not for 3 people only! If you have updates stored on your computer for old Microsoft Operating Systems, you can also offer them. All is accepted ! Credits: Thanks to all the members of this project, especially @WinFX!

  4. So, Windows 7 ESU and 8.1 died today? Just kidding, I will sideload official, non-paid Server 2012 R2 Updates to my 8.1 machine till October 2023. Windows 7 ESU might have ended, but Pos Ready 7 is still up till October 2024. Another very interesting thing I read today was that Microsoft implemented Secure Boot into Windows 7 with it‘s last Security Patch. I wonder why they did that but does this mean I can now install Windows 7 on newer devices that doesn‘t support Legacy BIOS? source: ghacks.net/2023/01/10/microsoft-sneaks-secure-boot-support-into-windows-7-shortly-before-support-ends/?amp

  6. The end of security updates for XP is not really a big deal. I am using the Atlantis Word Processor, OE Classic, and MyPal which are firmly committed to 32 bit XP compatibility for the time being, so the only thing that could force me to change to Linux is developments in codecs making media unplayable using DirectShow decoders. These do not appear to be in development anymore, so the latest DS decoder I have is the MPC-BE video decoder released in 2016. Also my VPN provider is gradually dropping support for L2TP, and I have not figured out how to make IKEV2 work under XP, which is a worrying development.

  7. Regarding the "likes" that seems to keep coming up. I would encourage my FRIENDS (they know who they are) to please please please not "focus" so heavily on "likes". Your life is NOT reduced to "likes" or "followers". The "psychology" behind thinking that way has been directly linked to teen suicides (and buried in inter-office board-room memos by very large social-media companies that live-and-die by "likes"). Please please please do not "focus" so heavily on "likes". Carry on, my FRIENDS. But I did want to throw that tidbit your way.

  11. PHYSICS THINKTANK PROPOSES METHOD FOR DETECTING EXTRATERRESTRIAL SPACECRAFT USING GRAVITATIONAL WAVES CHRISTOPHER PLAIN DECEMBER 9, 2022 An international team of scientists has written a paper outlining how humanity could detect extraterrestrial spacecraft using gravitational waves. Led by the privately-funded scientific thinktank Applied Physics, which includes over 30 member scientists from around the globe, and a pair of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, including the Moore award winner, physics professor and associate dean Manfred Paulini, the new method involves using existing telescopes designed to measure gravitational waves to spot alien spacecraft traveling within the Milky Way galaxy. “Our study of warp drives has paved the way for gravitational wave detection,” said Gianni Martire, CEO of Applied Physics, in a press release announcing the project. “This new method is not limited to the traditional range of electromagnetic signals; thus, we already have the ability to probe all 1011 stars in the Milky Way for warp drives, and soon, the ability to probe thousands of other galaxies.”... 18. Well, it is useful in some cases of data recovery, in the sense that for some time after a 00 wipe, deleted/de-indexed data will be easier to rebuild, but the effect is only marginal (and temporary, once the disk has been used for some time intensively, and possibly filled up there won't be many 00ed sectors anymore). Another reason (not particularly relevant on modern disks) is that when wiping a disk you are write-touching (and verifying) each and every sector, so that possible "bad" sectors or areas that weren't detected as such by the controller will come up (and be replaced or excluded). It has to be considered that, exactly because each and every sector is touched (and it is done sequentially, at the fastest possible speed, in a single session) it is actually provoking stress to the disk (just like restoring a dd-like image), it is a good idea, when possible, to make sure that the disk is cooled adequately (and if needed add a fan to keep it cool), with today largish sizes, a 00 wipe or a dd-like copy restore often takes several hours and for that long period of time the disk is working continuously at the fastest speed possible, generating heat without the inactivity times that in normal operation would allow it to cool down. jaclaz

  20. I just had my first ever BSOD when using 360Chrome 13.5 build 2022. I was scrolling a web page, and suddenly there it was, stop 0x8E - (KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED), apparently in win32k.sys. No other foreground programs were running at the time. I've been using @UCyborg's first posted rebased chrome.dll for several weeks now, with no problems. I hope if this was the cause of the BSOD that it doesn't happen again! After rebooting, 360Chrome was badly messed up, not surprisingly, but restoring a backup soon fixed it.

  23. Nowadays, new stuff is "sold" as safer and better. But that is not always the case. I am generally not a member of the faith community with the motto "the newer, the better". But maybe I'm just a dinosaur on the brink of extinction.

  24. I don't think we can really make a blanket-statement such as that. These "new standards" are not 'always' more cumbersome and heavy on loading. Some javascript functions were created out of necessity for "efficiency". "New" ways of doing things are sometimes "better". If we "parse" the full list of javascript functions "introduced" in 2015 and compare directly with the "old way" of doing the same function, I bet we will find that "newer is better". And if they are not, then at least the non-lazy web developers would still be using the "old way". But unfortunately, in this cookie-cutter world, "non-lazy" web developers are few and far between.

  25. Generally, I am not a fan of innovations and new standards which mean websites become more cumbersome, slow, and overloaded. And I don't like Chrome browsers due to their restrictions, and the new Firefox browsers, either. I could say a lot about all that but I'll leave it at that for now.
    1 point
  26. Agreed! However, I highly disagree with the term "Googlized" - that's just a fancy Mozilla Term in my book, some sort of "blame Google that we cannot render your web site". That "blame game" doesn't really work, in my opinion. ECMAScript 2015 is the "standard" to which javascript engines have to comply in order to render "modern" web sites. Available here -- https://www.ecma-international.org/wp-content/uploads/ECMA-262_6th_edition_june_2015.pdf There are newer standards, but for the sake of the term "Googlized" that gets thrown around here at MSFN, I'll refer to the 2015 standard. I do not know what the newer standards bring to the table, but I do know that import, optional chaining, and nullish coalescing has been around since 2015. 360Chrome v13/13.5 is a 2018 web browser and it complies with import, optional chaining, and nullish coalescing operators. The actual "base" for most of roytam1's is a bit muddy for me, but basically circa Firefox 52 (March 2017), 53 (April 2017), or 55 (August 2017) depending on your reference point. 2017 browsers should comply with 2015 standards. Will another two+ years of weekly updates on roytam1 offerings achieve better "compliance"? Your guess is as good as mine. Optional chaining and nullish coalescing operators were not in compliance two years ago and are today in some of the roytam1 offerings. So yes, "progress" is being made. But my main point here is that Google does not write the "standard", they just do a better job at complying to the "standard". I am quite positive that ECMA International did not set out to create a standard that Google could comply with but that Mozilla could not. Market share is determined by who can best comply with web standards more then by brand loyalty. Mozilla does have this for them, they're like "pirates" - the ship may be sinking, but they will go down with that ship and stand proud while gasping in that last breath.

  27. You're right if you refer to these Googlized websites! However, this is not @roytam1's problem, but due to the browser architecture he supports. Even he cannot work magic and Moonchild, either. I give all these Google-infested sites to 360Chrome v13.5 build 1030 or my Android tablet to eat. But, my mainly used browsers are New Moon and Serpent, and maybe, Mypal 68 in the future. That's how it will stay for now, and hopefully for a long time.

  32. XP is a great OS. Specially the 64-bit version. But recently I realized something. My motherboard got busted. And in my search for motherboards for am3+ socket I don't know why but I was still expecting to find a new one in box at a good price. So finding the the hardware that supports it is the most difficult part. I guess you can run it virtually if you really want to but it's not the same.

But that perspective is an illusion; in reality, there are millions of world-shattering events happening every instant across the cosmos. This short film explores just how much is going on every moment in our ridiculously enormous universe. In the fraction of a second it takes to blink your eyes, thousands of stars will be born, hundreds will explode and die, millions of planets will form, and our universe will expand by half a million kilometers in diameter. And these numbers only account for the observable universe -- not for what could be happening beyond, where some scientists believe there could be an infinite expanse of space. Archaeologists Hunting For Cleopatra's Tomb Uncover a "Geometric Miracle" Tunnel Michelle Starr 11/18/2022 Image - © Provided by ScienceAlert - but we read here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/intellectualproperty/copyright/permissions "In your advertising, Microsoft does not permit you to: Use Microsoft-owned content, including but not limited to icons, product sounds, product animations, logos, and images without Microsoft’s prior permission." - so I've deleted this cool image... Underneath a temple in the ancient ruined city of Taposiris Magna on the Egyptian coast, archaeologists have uncovered a vast, spectacular tunnel that experts are referring to as a "geometric miracle". During ongoing excavations and exploration of the temple, Kathleen Martinez of the University of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and colleagues uncovered the structure 13 meters (43 feet) below the ground. The 2-meter tall tunnel had been hewn through an incredible 1,305 meters (4,281 feet) of sandstone. Its design, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, is remarkably similar to the 1,036-meter Tunnel of Eupalinos – a 6th century BCE aqueduct on the Greek island of Samos. Often referred to as a marvel of engineering, the conduit was unprecedented in design and construction in its day. While the Taposiris Magna tunnel isn't without equal, its engineering is nonetheless just as impressive. Parts of the Taposiris Magna tunnel are submerged in water, though putting aside its resemblance to the Eupalinos Tunnel, its purpose is currently unknown. Martinez, who has been working in Taposiris Magna since 2004 in search of the lost tomb of Cleopatra VII, believes that the tunnel could be a promising lead. Previously, the excavations have yielded clues that seem to point to the famous queen and the last of the Ptolemies. ... 43. Explore - From Space to Sound Ever wondered what the music of the spheres would sound like? Hubble brings us cosmic sights, but these astronomical marvels can be experienced with other senses as well. Through data sonification, the same digital data that gets translated into images is transformed into sound. Elements of the image, like brightness and position, are assigned pitches and volumes. Each translation below begins on the left side of the image and moves to the right. No sound can travel in space, but sonifications provide a new way of experiencing and conceptualizing data. Sonifications allow the audience, including blind and visually impaired communities, to “listen” to astronomical images and explore their data. 44. Perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo found in China AFP/ UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM Researchers said the egg was probably preserved by a sudden mudslide that buried it, protecting it from scavengers Scientists have announced the discovery of a perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo that was preparing to hatch from its egg, just like a chicken. The embryo was discovered in Ganzhou in southern China and researchers estimate it is at least 66 million years old. It is believed to be a toothless theropod dinosaur, or oviraptorosaur, and has been named Baby Yingliang. Researcher Dr Fion Waisum Ma said it is "the best dinosaur embryo ever found in history". The discovery has also given researchers a greater understanding of the link between dinosaurs and modern birds. The fossil shows the embryo was in a curled position known as "tucking", which is a behaviour seen in birds shortly before they hatch. "This indicates that such behaviour in modern birds first evolved and originated among their dinosaur ancestors," Dr Ma told the AFP news agency. Oviraptorosaurs, which means "egg thief lizards," were feathered dinosaurs that lived in what is now Asia and North America during the Late Cretaceous period - between 100 million to 66 million years ago. Paleontologist Prof Steve Brusatte who was also part of the research team, tweeted that it was "one of the most stunning dinosaur fossils" he had ever seen, and that the embryo was on the brink of hatching.... ... 45. In this short article I quoted above, I recommended the AV program WiseVector StopX. As mentioned in a previous post, you should configure it very carefully though to avoid problems if using it. Some programs have to be excluded from monitoring, otherwise they won't work. WiseVector StopX seems to examine many executed programs much deeper than other AV programs. If you trust these executed programs which WiseVector StopX doesn't seem to like, you have to exclude them from monitoring in two different locations: in the main program window under Exclusions and additionally in the Settings under Advanced Protection Settings if necessary. After one week of using, exclusions in boths lists are definitely necessary for all editions of 360Chrome browsers, Serpent, and some others. For some programs, however, the entry of the program or program folder in the main exclusion list is sufficient. Cheers, AstroSkipper
