  2. Hello Windows Updaters, here are some news. THE NEWS WIndows Update v3: The Windows Update v3 website is still experiencing issues, and we're working to solve them. However, there's an url : http://windowsupdate.overrender.com/R1201/v31site/default.htm (the website is still work in progress). We also discovered the Windows Update Catalog v3 (for update from Windows 95 to Windows 2000 Service Pack 2). WIndows Update v4: Windows Update v4 is missing the results.asp page. Without this page, you simply can't install updates. The Windows Update Catalog is not working at all. If any of you find the good results.asp, send me a private message and I'll try it. This would save us a long time of coding the page. WIndows Update v5: Windows Update v5 is now available in 22 languages, all included in the same folder (v5consumer). Once the pictures will be done, the Windows Update v5 pack will be released. If anyone wants to help us with translating the pages in any other languages (like Japanese, Chinese), send me a private message or join the Discord server. Any of you can help us. Don't worry, this project is not for 3 people only! If you have updates stored on your computer for old Microsoft Operating Systems, you can also offer them. All is accepted ! Credits: Thanks to all the members of this project, especially @WinFX!

  3. Did you disable WD? Can is be completely removed from Win11? I don't use "real-time" but do use "on-demand" scans but they never come up with anything because I don't ever visit strange sites anymore.

  4. So, Windows 7 ESU and 8.1 died today? Just kidding, I will sideload official, non-paid Server 2012 R2 Updates to my 8.1 machine till October 2023. Windows 7 ESU might have ended, but Pos Ready 7 is still up till October 2024. Another very interesting thing I read today was that Microsoft implemented Secure Boot into Windows 7 with it‘s last Security Patch. I wonder why they did that but does this mean I can now install Windows 7 on newer devices that doesn‘t support Legacy BIOS? source: ghacks.net/2023/01/10/microsoft-sneaks-secure-boot-support-into-windows-7-shortly-before-support-ends/?amp

  5. Agreed! I actually see it as a POSITIVE. Makes my OS forever-fixed "static" instead of forever-changing "dynamic".

  6. The end of security updates for XP is not really a big deal. I am using the Atlantis Word Processor, OE Classic, and MyPal which are firmly committed to 32 bit XP compatibility for the time being, so the only thing that could force me to change to Linux is developments in codecs making media unplayable using DirectShow decoders. These do not appear to be in development anymore, so the latest DS decoder I have is the MPC-BE video decoder released in 2016. Also my VPN provider is gradually dropping support for L2TP, and I have not figured out how to make IKEV2 work under XP, which is a worrying development.

  7. Regarding the "likes" that seems to keep coming up. I would encourage my FRIENDS (they know who they are) to please please please not "focus" so heavily on "likes". Your life is NOT reduced to "likes" or "followers". The "psychology" behind thinking that way has been directly linked to teen suicides (and buried in inter-office board-room memos by very large social-media companies that live-and-die by "likes"). Please please please do not "focus" so heavily on "likes". Carry on, my FRIENDS. But I did want to throw that tidbit your way.

  10. WinNTSetup - a simple but powerful universal Windows Installer Features: Install (unattend) Windows 2k/XP/20??/Vista/7/8.x/10/11 x86/x64/arm64 Practically runs even on the most minimalistic WinPE selectable drive letter for the new Windows installation Fully automated with save/load setting in ini file and various command line options Install Windows also if nlite/vlite has remove winnt32.exe/setup.exe Integrate Drivers: normal PNP and Textmode Drivers Patch uxtheme to allow unsigned Themes Some common registry tweaks and *.reg file import DISM APPX removal, feature enable/disable Simple VHD creation and Installation Support "Windows to Go" for Windows 7 and later installs Supports WimBoot and CompactOS option for Windows 7 and later Supports all current WIM files: WIM/SWM/ESD and ISO files WinCapture - capture a Windows installation to WIM or ESD file MinWin - simple trimming WIM in memory before apply WinCopy - copy an existing Windows installation to another partition Offline Hotfix uninstall Offline password reset Not Supported: - No Windows embedded version (this includes WinFLP) - No upgrades of existing installations About driver installation: Every driver added in NT6.x windows will be added to the driver store. So it's not recommended to add countless driver, but rather more really required ones. NT5.x massstorage driver integration is possible thanks to Mr dUSHA powerful MSSTMake.exe tool To the Unattend option: It's possible to use an unattend.xml to run the Setup unattended. But as the actual WinPE Setup Phase isn't effective in that way of install, all Winpe related settings inside the unattend.xml won't be applied. Ini config file It's possible to save all GUI-settings to a ini file: push Ctrl + S to save all settings to an ini. push Ctrl + L to load all settings from an ini. A WinNTSetup.ini file in the same dir as the app itself will be loaded automatically at startup. It also can be selected via command line: WinNTSetup.exe /cfg:"C:\mysettings.ini" If you want to modify ini settings yourself, click-click has made a nice PDF for it. For advanced users there are also hidden settings described in the included WinNTSetup.ini.txt Command line: - Press F1 to get list of all options To install Windows in a VHD file: - requires Windows 7 as OS and Windows 7 Ultimate, Enterprise or Server 2008 R2 as Source - create a partitioned VHD and assign a drive letter (push Ctrl + Shift + V to use build in diskpart wrapper for this) - select the VHD drive as installation drive (make sure you boot drive ist a active primary partition on a physical disk) If you get an Antivirus warning from your AV software, please report it to them as a false positive and let them check it. 15. To compile the extender, you need another working PC running Windows 7, and then install the WDK 7.1.0 on that Windows 7 machine, and Notepad++ for editing the NTOSKRNL Emu_Extender source code files before compiling. And you also need Dependency Walker x64 to check for the missing dependency functions, and CFF Explorer to modify the PE-formatted files (e.g. .exe, .dll, .sys, etc.). First, open CFF Explorer, and load the driver file (.sys) you're going to install. Then, go to the Optional Header section, and change all the minor versions to 0000 (if the major versions are 000A, change every of them to 0006). And then in Import Directory section, rename ntoskrnl.exe to ntoskrn8.sys. Save and overwrite the file, recalc the checksum in Rebuilder section, and save again. Don't forget to make a backup copy before modifying in CFF Explorer (rename xxx (2).sys to xxx.sys.bak). To check for the missing functions, open Dependency Walker, and load the previously modified driver file. If there are no critical issues, your driver is now ready to be installed. Suggestions: If the driver file (.sys) is signed with certificate, you need to delete the certificate first using delcert.exe before modifying it to avoid corruptions or malfunctions. 17. dd (which is the shortening of copy and convert , don't ask [1]) is a traditional Unix/Linux command that simply copies bytes (or in the case of hard disks sectors/blocks) as they are. Of course there are several other programs that do the same, either command line or GUI. dd-like or "forensic sound" means that the output (be it an image or directly another device) is EXACTLY the same as the input, i.e. it is an EXACT, 1:1 copy. For whole disks, it means that the target image (or the cloned disk) is exactly the same size as the source, as it contains all sectors, unlike many (commercial) cloning/imaging tools that - in order to save time/space - either interpret the filesystem and only copy files indexed in it or (swiftly?) ignore already 00ed sectors in the source, usually adopting proprietary file formats for the images (an image taken with dd is usually called RAW as it contains nothing but the contents of the source, no headers, no footers, no checksums, etc.). About 1 or 0's it doesn't really matter, the 00 is a convention, new disks (usually) are all 00's, if you want to check at the bit level the values used are (normally) 55 and AA hex, i.e. 01010101 10101010 so that (in two passes) every bit is actually flipped. jaclaz [1] If you need to ask, and have some time, enjoy: http://reboot.pro/index.php?showtopic=15207

  19. Just where did these come from? Plucked out of thin air?
    1 point
  20. Well, it is useful in some cases of data recovery, in the sense that for some time after a 00 wipe, deleted/de-indexed data will be easier to rebuild, but the effect is only marginal (and temporary, once the disk has been used for some time intensively, and possibly filled up there won't be many 00ed sectors anymore). Another reason (not particularly relevant on modern disks) is that when wiping a disk you are write-touching (and verifying) each and every sector, so that possible "bad" sectors or areas that weren't detected as such by the controller will come up (and be replaced or excluded). It has to be considered that, exactly because each and every sector is touched (and it is done sequentially, at the fastest possible speed, in a single session) it is actually provoking stress to the disk (just like restoring a dd-like image), it is a good idea, when possible, to make sure that the disk is cooled adequately (and if needed add a fan to keep it cool), with today largish sizes, a 00 wipe or a dd-like copy restore often takes several hours and for that long period of time the disk is working continuously at the fastest speed possible, generating heat without the inactivity times that in normal operation would allow it to cool down. jaclaz

  21. [off-topic] For simple progressive videos, sure: xidel "https://url-to/video.mp4" --download . The Youtube-url you mention is a program-url and not a direct video-url. You have to recover that video-url first. As it just so happens, I've created my own Youtube extractor for my hobby-project Xivid (a function module for Xidel). The most basic usage would be: xidel -s --module=xivid.xqm -e "xivid:youtube('https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ')" This returns a JSON with the direct video-urls of all the different formats it can find. For the DASH-formats you'll need FFmpeg, so with Xidel you'll only be able to download the "pg-1", "pg-2" and "pg-3" formats directly. If you want to download the 720p variant, you could do for example: xidel -s --module=xivid.xqm -e "()" -f "xivid:youtube('dQw4w9WgXcQ')/(formats)()[id='pg-3']/url" --download "Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up (Official Music Video).mp4" [/off-topic]

  28. Perhaps... But I could list one by one "at least" a hundred web sites that WORK on this "no longer actively developed" 360Chrome but do NOT WORK on ANY of the roytam1 offerings. The last TWO PLUS YEARS of weekly updates have still YET to get any of the roytam1 offerings to "work" for any of those "hundred web sites". To each their own... I'm done for the night... I tap the mat and bow out...

  29. As you probably already suspected, I can't really agree with you there, either. The 360Chrome versions here are no longer being actiively developed, the modifications are rather cosmetic, except for the innovative rebasing. All versions of @roytam1 are actively modified in their code, week by week, for which I am extremely grateful to him. Therefore, this comparison also stands on shaky ground. But however, I appreciate all your efforts here.

  32. You're welcome! BTW, I already knew this thread. Unfortunately, there is no official forum, only this rather unofficial thread. As I wrote in my article, I do not regret the change. But you have to set many exclusions, because WiseVector StopX examines some programs very intensively, which leads to disturbances. Today, for example, I wanted to play some music videos in VLC, but unfortunately only with stuttering sound. I tried everything. I upgraded, downgraded and finally even completely reinstalled VLC. Nothing helped! Until I realised that WiseVector StopX was the culprit. I quickly made two exclusions and everything was ok again. Cheers, AstroSkipper

Of course it has been confirmed that the expired avast software will continue to work. If you are a bit fussy about it you'll have to do a clean install. It is the only solution that really works. 38. As far as I can tell, the only concern in the coming years is the gradual dropping of 32-bit support in new software, but I don't really know of anything people use for XP that still gest updates that isn't specifically built with legacy OSes in mind.

  43. Perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo found in China AFP/ UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM Researchers said the egg was probably preserved by a sudden mudslide that buried it, protecting it from scavengers Scientists have announced the discovery of a perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo that was preparing to hatch from its egg, just like a chicken. The embryo was discovered in Ganzhou in southern China and researchers estimate it is at least 66 million years old. It is believed to be a toothless theropod dinosaur, or oviraptorosaur, and has been named Baby Yingliang. Researcher Dr Fion Waisum Ma said it is "the best dinosaur embryo ever found in history". The discovery has also given researchers a greater understanding of the link between dinosaurs and modern birds. The fossil shows the embryo was in a curled position known as "tucking", which is a behaviour seen in birds shortly before they hatch. "This indicates that such behaviour in modern birds first evolved and originated among their dinosaur ancestors," Dr Ma told the AFP news agency. Oviraptorosaurs, which means "egg thief lizards," were feathered dinosaurs that lived in what is now Asia and North America during the Late Cretaceous period - between 100 million to 66 million years ago. Paleontologist Prof Steve Brusatte who was also part of the research team, tweeted that it was "one of the most stunning dinosaur fossils" he had ever seen, and that the embryo was on the brink of hatching.... ... 46. I ran into a problem compiling psutils under this custom build of 3.8.1350 for XP. I received the error message Does this mean that this Python interpreter was built using the --without-threads option in order to disable threads? Is there some way under Windows to see a list of the options used to build Python so as to see if the --without-threads option was included? Could cmalex provide a list of the options they used when compiling his custom Python 3.8.1350? The archive of Python binaries provided by cmalex is a mess, so I selected and reassembled the relevant files to make a standard Python distribution which you can obtain here. Pip is not included but it can be installed using the ensurepip module and this command: python -m ensurepip --upgrade I am attaching batch files to write the registry entries that might be required with Python 3.8. They are intended to work in conjunction with the mingw compiler. If you are using MSVC the %PYTHONHOME% variable cannot be used. Python 3.8 Add.bat Python 3.8 Delete.bat
