Hi I tested DcBrowser from "Humming Owl" and it works fine, but there's something I don't like at all that I've seen on some weird versions of 360chrome. This is the "chrome://plugins" function which does not work and prevents certain plug-ins from being disabled with this browser. This is intentional, as this function is not listed in "chrome://chrome-urls". of DcBrowser and it's an open door to possible problems. So, for me it's the direction of the trash can for this browser. And I continue to use the "Arcticfoxie" 360chrome13.5.1030 version which seems to me much more secure.

that update appears to be included in the July 2021 KB5004302 & KB5005389 updates for server 2012 / embedded win8 as I checked the contents of the KB5004302 & KB5005389 updates myself, which seems to have the flash removal files. also included in the KB5005094 security-only update for Aug. 2021 as well. the flash removal files don't seem to be included in the KB5005607 & KB5006732 security-only updates so Jody could just try to install those and avoid installing KB5005094 and KB5004302/KB5005389

I endorse (for what it is worth) RainyShadow suggestions. Making a "full" format may be not entirely a good idea, it depends on the specific "type" of bad sectors and the amount of them. BTW tools like Victoria or MHDD will tell you not only which sectors are actually "bad" but also those that are "weak". Now, there are two most common cases: 1) all (hopefully few) bad sectors are spread here and there on the hard disk then the full format is the way to go. 2) but if bad sectors are concentrated in a given area (which is typical of a head crash) it makes more sense to "isolate" the area, partitioning the disk in such a way that no partition extends over the "bad" area, as the number of "spare" (please read as re-mappable) sectors is limited, so if you have more than a few of them, you shouldn't "waste" them for a largish contiguous area jaclaz

Forced protections like automatic updates without ability to opt out, blocking addons, safebrowsing are false security/privacy features. I do not want browser treat me like baby and recist what I can do with it. If I want will load all possible adware and spyware plugins and only visit phishing sites I should be allowed do so. It is not browser vendor problem if user that stupid. For me privacy and security are hand to hand. If privacy is lost so is security. Lets say you enable feature than pings to company all the time to protect you from "bad sites" (sure they wont harm you with that data) and company gets breached and all of your browsing data with IP address and mac address they have collected is leaked there goes security.... I wish browsers would be as recistive limiting developers from doing whatever they want with browser. That would actually help for security. "Hey lets make program language that allow web browser do stuff without user consect since I can see zero abuse risk on that". Most of web browser security issues are self caused by adding stuff that DOES NOT BELONG to be web browser. For me problem on those protections is someone else decides what is safe and what is not safe for me and caused biased opinions many times. For example Palememe blocks Noscript because Moonchildish devs got mad to noscript devs for no good reason. And reason to be blocked is it breaks sites. It sure breaks sites but that is because sites got too much js and noscript like name suggest is script blocker

Thank you both for testing and confirming ... Consistent with the digital SHA-2 signature date (2021-05-01) of the revised 4.6.2 setup; the page must've been edited soon after May 6th... Bingo! It's all clear now... The ESU plan for WS2008SP2 ends in Jan 2023, however security updates support for officially sanctioned .NET FW 4.6 will end, as said, in late Apr 2022; that would've created a period of ca. 9 months, during which installed 4.6 would have stayed unpatched... Possibly due to technical reasons, M$ deemed it easier to patch 4.6.2 (still supported past Apr 2022) to also install under WS2008SP2, rather than modify and offer 4.7.x (or higher) to existing WS2008SP2 ESU customers... And the omission of 4.6.1 from the linked article isn't an error; we already know that 4.6.1 installs successfully under NT 6.0, but it was never officially supported (as in via MU) there ; M$'s plan is to migrate WS2008SP2 ESU paying customers from 4.6 directly to 4.6.2 before/soon after Apr 2022 (till Jan 2023, when ESU ends); since 4.6.1 EOLs at the same time as 4.6, no reason for M$ to even mention it in that scenario... But another thing bugs me now: How is the revised (2021) 4.6.2 setup different internally to the first (2016) release? Does it embed ALL security updates issued for 4.6.2 from Jul 2016 to May 2021? File sizes are almost identical, so this fact isn't revealing anything ... Of course, MU would never work for 4.6.2 under Vista SP2, still, one has to know what updates to download manually from MUC; and then there's the "problem"/grey area of installing from local files ESU .NET FW 4.6.x updates... In any case, I understand this is the Windows Vista Extended Kernel thread, so I'm party responsible for (slightly?) derailing it ; however, this is info important to the broader Vista Community, so if the mods decide it should be better placed elsewhere (info = series of recent posts about .NET FW 4.6.2/Vista | WS2008), feel free to do so...

Microsoft must have decided that ESU customers running 2008 SP2 deserve to have a supported .NET version after April 26, 2022. (Looks like I was formerly correct that 4.6.0 was the last officially supported version.) Thanks to all who have investigated this interesting development!

@XPerceniol , if you want these bad sectors to be marked as non-writable , you need to wipe out the HDD with the full format option , not just "quick" . This is the simpliest way , do not forget to backup your data first ! But I strongly suggest to replace the HDD , a huge chance that it will gain new bad sectors anyways .

Doesn't look that bad. The SMART values indicate a single bad sector (that the drive is aware of) pending for a remap. There may be more though. First do a full scan without any repairs. Take a note of the slow and bad sectors (i think there was a "save log" function in the bottom field). If there are a lot of bad sectors, just cut them out of the partitions as jaclaz suggested. If there are just a few, you can try to remap them. Set the scanning range to about +/- 100K sectors around the problem places, tick the "remap" option, then "start". If the bad sectors appear to be "moving", this may indicate a problem with the heads (not likely in your case) - then backup whatever you can and don't bother more, just use it as a paperweight, lol. Finish with a full chdsk scan (the /R option).

Sure, I do have some familiarity with them, but a common mistake is to believe that the make (as opposed to specific model and even firmware version) means anything, some Seagate models were better than - say - WD, and WD often (but not always) have been better than another make - still there have been some WD models that were crappy to say the least, and eben on a same exact make/model and firmware there have been reports of reliability differences depending on the actual factory in which they were made. But I was talking of something else, "weak sectors", these may develop in time on *any* disk and either remain "weak" "forever" or turn into bad sectors, even if - generally speaking - they are usually spread on the disk, if there is a certain number of such "weak" sectors near an area with a concentration of actually "bad" sectors it makes sense to exclude also the "weak" sectors, besides the "bad" ones from the partitioning. Running CPU-Z on Windows Vista Extended Kernel: Normally, if you have the extended kernel installed CPU-Z will stuck on 15% when loading. HD Sentinel, Victoria, MHDD No need to format the whole drive when you can just rewrite the sectors to trigger remapping. Repeat the scan to ensure all bad sectors have been remapped. If there are any left (your drive may be out of spare sectors), do a full chkdsk to mark them as bad.

I recommend what @Dixelrecommend. I have been cleared smart alert on some disks. Sometimes bad blocks are not remapped by controller when should be i recommend same too. I generally had bad experience with seagates. WD blue (7200rpm 1tb model with idle parking off) and wd black never let me down. Funny that my 20gb seagates from early 2000 got zero issues while had plenty of issues with newer ones

You're very welcome , yes , the full option will remap the sectors , I have a similar HDD (but bigger) and performed this procedure on it , it's also a Seagate one. I strongly suggest to get rid of Seagate , once and for all. They usually love to develop bad sectors. I use it only for non-important data since , even though the sectors were successfully remapped , all of them.

The one I really get a kick out of is SRWare Iron. Also promotes itself as "privacy oriented". FALSE ADVERTISING. They only remove "half" of Google Telemetry but REPLACE IT with SRWare Telemetry. Telemetry is Telemetry. We don't want any of it! I think Iridium is probably the best as far as little to no telemetry (though I personally have very little experience with Iridium as I do love my XP and Iridium does require Win7 or higher).

Boot the system using a WinPE, live cd or view the disk in another OS. Verify if the file it complains about is actually missing. If the file is actually missing, replace it and then try to boot the disk again. There are situations where a program (or OS) may complain about a file being missing when it is not actually missing. This can happen if the program or OS only knows the location of the required file by way of another file, such as an .ini, .xml, registry entry or environment variable. If that intermediary is missing, changed or corrupted such as to be pointing to the wrong place, then an error like this is possible. There are also situations where an intermediary points to a file, and the file isn't present, but the intermediary isn't active and the file is not supposed to be present. An example of this I've seen is bitlocker when scanning files for encryption will read the reagent.xml file and attempt to follow the paths inside to any files that are present. This fails on systems with WinRE disabled, since the files in the XML are not present and the reagent.xml is not used by anything.
