... This isn't always a definitive test - many a times, lowering the subsystem string (to < 6.0) in the main executable will get it to launch, despite this initial warning; the only definitive test is to use dependency walker x64 on the 64-bit program executable (and, possibly, on the program DLLs it depends on) and look out for API calls to missing functions in the XP x64 kernel... ;)

There isnt any missing APIs, but some DLLs are missing. Ill list them later.

It seems that PotPlayer is now only 64 bit, there are no new builds of 32 bits, the last is 1.7.20538. There are two errors in it, the first: the installer in XP does not start, but if you unpack it like an archive, the program works. Second: the h265 codec error, if the video card does not support its hardware acceleration, this is manifested on all OSs. It is fixed by replacing the PotPlayer.dll file from older versions.

FTR, 1.7.20538 is the latest STABLE release, has been out since Sept 19th, 2019; if you head to vendor's (official) download page,

https://potplayer.daum.net/

both links (32-bit DOWNLOAD + 64-bit DOWNLOAD) yield version 1.7.20538 installers...

This change has been documented in the latest Release Notes:

Version History of the PotPlayer

[1.7.20538]                        2019/09/19
----------------------------------------------------------
* Changed default HEVC decoder to Built-in FFmpeg HEVC H/W Decoder

As you, I don't see the reasoning behind this change  ; only fairly recent CPU+GPU combinations support hardware decoding of h265/HEVC (and only on Vista SP2 +) :realmad:.

This, in essence, means downgrading PotPlayer :( ; another way to tackle this is to install (if not already) the Open Codec bundle and then, via the player's GUI, change h265/HEVC decoder to the one from ffmpeg.dll:

That's not an accurate description of what was actually changed. More accurate description would be "Only use whatever system-wide decoder you can find when user has explicitly selected Builtin-in FFMpeg Decoder".

If you get an error with that option selected, you may find that after installing K-Lite Codec Pack, LAV Video Decoder will be used to decode HEVC encoded files. Whether the graphics hardware supports hardware decoding of the format is irrelevant.

Definitely not sure, but the new 1.7.20570 Beta is only 64 bit: http://t1.daumcdn.net/potplayer/beta/PotPlayerSetup64.exe It is possible that the stable version will be 32 bit, but without any tests.

The x64 beta seems to completely support XP x64, so there may be a slight possibility of a x86 build coming.

I'm lurking 'cause I use PotPlayer on a daily basis; as a matter of fact, I'm using it in this very moment as well 'cause my stereo only gets FM and not DAB so I listen to radio using my computer. (FYI DAB in UK airs at ridiculous bitrates, so do online radio, but we don't have any alternatives and they sound better than FM despite the very low bitrate, so...)

Anyway, I'm concerned about another program as well: Telegram. I stopped receiving updates with my version (1.2.6) and if I click "search updates" it doesn't show any updates, however if I go to the website I can see that newer version have been released (without my knowledge). When I tried to install the very latest version (1.8.7 beta), it let me install it and it works, however it shows a big fat red bar at the very top saying that I should update my OS, so I think that telegram may stop working "soon".

... It looks as though the BETA channel has lagged behind the stable release one... ;)

https://desktop.telegram.org/changelog#beta-version

By visiting their official GitHub repository,

https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop/releases

the latest stable release posted there is at version 1.8.11 (updated a mere two hours ago...)

That same version can be obtained by visiting the main site:

At least on their GitHub repo,

https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop#supported-systems

suggests Windows XP as being still supported :cheerleader:

Though not a Telegram user, I decided to conduct some tests here, on Vista SP2 32-bit; I fetched the "portable" 1.8.10 package from GitHub, it had no issues launching:

As you see, I, too, was greeted by the red header with the

PLEASE UPDATE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM.
So that Telegram Desktop can update to newer versions.

warning, but the behaviour of the app itself contradicts that warning, as it's automatically downloading (in the background) the update to the newer version; once I click UPDATE TELEGRAM,

xzBdqHk.jpg

the app is restarted to latest version 1.8.11:

Are you saying this is no longer possible under XP?

In any case, if I choose to hide the red header here (by clicking the white X), this option is honoured and it isn't displayed anymore in future relaunches of the app... :)

Generally speaking, when still running XP or Vista, it's a dead certainty that currently working software will cease to function sometime in the near (or, hopefully, not so near) future; this will soon-ish become also true for Windows 7, though I suspect the deprecation of this very popular Win OS will come much slower compared to Vista :( and, to a lesser extent, XP...

I have British and Greek friends in the UK with whom I communicate frequently :D; I was under the impression DAB broadcasts used as high a bitrate as 192kbps, but employing the less efficient audio codec MP2... Anyhow, FM analog broadcast in the UK is slated for the ax... :(

WRT Capital London: On occasion, I also like to listen to this commercial radio station (although I shouldn't really be listening from overseas... ;) ); their public online stream is indeed abysmal, only HE-AACv1@48kbps (adequate, I guess, for mobile devices and poor laptop speakers); there's a higher quality - non public - stream of theirs at

http://media-ice.musicradio.com:80/CapitalMP3

This is in high contrast to BBC Radio streams which, if inside the UK, are offered as AAC LC@320kbps :thumbup

Cheers :)

Better to go to VideoHelp for downloads of PotPlayer. The latest version for Windows XP is marked there and it is 1.7.17508 which works flawlessly with WinXP including X265:
https://www.videohelp.com/software/PotPlayer
Find: Download PotPlayer 1.7.17508 for Windows XP Adfree
Find Download PotPlayer 1.7.17508 for Windows XP 64-bit Adfree

Do not use versions after this because it breaks X265 compatability because of "1.7.20538 Changed default HEVC decoder to Built-in FFmpeg HEVC H/W Decoder". Windows XP cant do HEVC H/W decoder.

Skype is now forcing version 8, which doesnt work in xp anymore.  The only way around is webskype on browser (I use roytam1's New Moon basilisk52), adding to about:config a new string with:

general.useragent.override.skype.com; Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/73.0.3683.103 Safari/537.36

For more info (and browser alternatives) check http://www.skaip.org/skype-for-web-on-windows-xp-and-windows-vista
