  1. Slightly O/T, but I have several older MoBo's (HP's) that boot with 256MB RAM (SDRAM limited supply) sticks but one stick is only recognized as 128MB. They are not the same brand, BTW. Seems that the RAM chips aren't correctly recognized (the MBIT problem and how many chips on the stick). IOW, are you *certain* that they're a matched set? May be the problem. edit - above is a "generic" description, so please don't slam me for using less-than-desirable terms and phrase.
  2. Sorry, but we have no clue what your current MoBo is. You have a thread about an AM2 Mobo but never finalized what you got. Therefore, we can't "recommend" anything "better" than what you now (unknown) have.
  3. There must be some kind of "hook" to another (preexisting) file then. You might try ProcessExplorer to see what's "missing". Seems to have a whole mess of other dependencies (e.g. on OPEN "browseUI") as shown on an XP-type OS. How do you mean "fails to open or save"? You mean by the (e.g.) "whatever.bmp" names? Older "PBRUSH" appears to have a ".PCX". The suffix. The Paint95 one does not allow for opening (older) "PC Paintbrush". I really don't know if Process Explorer would run on that OS. It's kind of hard to test on my PC since I did it in VPC. Doubt if the Add-Ons would work on it (maybe?) since the only other than MSI Install is for DOS (i.e. Win 3.x?). It runs REALLY slowly otherwise. edit - something became "missing" in my test bed. No time to mess with right now. I did, however, find this (Win3.11). ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/misc1/PEROPSYS/WINDOWS/KB/Q82/6/50.TXT...listing REG entries.
  4. 1 - Not really sure. I'd have to try it (I own all three). I give that a big *MAYBE*. 2 - McAfee stinks. Unsure of another suitable free version except... 2a - SpyBot v1.62 (scroll down to that older version - only for Spyware) http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/ 2b - Maybe http://www.oldapps.com/avg_antivirus.php?system=Windows_98 2c - Clamwin - http://www.clamwin.com/ If you *do* have a virus, an Upgrade 98->98SE won't help a bit. HTH and good luck.
  5. They all appear to be "Word Breaker" files. Maybe part of IE?
  6. I have absolutely no clue if your Upgrade Product Key will work with one of these (they're Retail). Indications are you can. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/172809-capturingdeploying-standard-windows-7-image-or-why-microsoft-is-yet-again-driving-me-to-drink/#entry1086643 It would have to be the Home Premium (not x64, rather x86 I assume?). If possible, I would recommend cloning you current XP Install to "something". Also be aware that you should get (from MS) the Upgrade Advisor to ensure that your hardware is "Windows 7 Ready". Additionally, any third-party software on your XP may not work on Windows 7. Note: Burn that downloaded ISO *Image* to a DVD. There *was* a free add-on from MS (AFAICR) to XP to burn an ISO image but I can't seem to find it right now. IMGBURN should work fine (also free). This is in case you don't have software to burn an ISO Image. HTH and good luck.
  7. In that case, maybe you'd better post in the Windows7 Subforum. Your question initally asked about Unattended Driver Installs. The method remains the same (as I said). This "somewhat" goes along with Post#217 above. <settings pass="windowsPE"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Setup" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <RunSynchronous> <RunSynchronousCommand wcm:action="add"> <Order>1</Order> <Path>cmd /q /c "FOR %i IN (C D E F G H I J K L N M O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z) DO IF EXIST %i:\FOLDER\RUNME.CMD cmd /k %i:\FOLDER\RUNME.cmd"</Path> <Description>Detecting Root drive</Description> </RunSynchronousCommand> </RunSynchronous>In the case above, this causes a CMD (during PE phase) to find the ROOT of the Driver where the Command you want to run and then runs it. Sounds like you're trying to make a "general purpose" Unattended DVD (including 3d Party Software?).
  8. You're referring to this: http://web.archive.org/web/20140103015408/http://support.microsoft.com/kb/148494 PBRUSH.EXE "calls" MSPAINT.EXE in 95/NT4. Here's a link to Win95/NT MSPAINT (Paint95). http://www.computerhope.com/download/window95.htm Whether it will run or how to go about installing is another matter, since I haven't researched farther that that. HTH edit - Tested extracted files from Win95 on an NT3.51. Here's the file list necessary. mfc30.dll mfcans32.dll mfco30.dll mfcuia32.dll mspaint.cnt mspaint.exe mspaint.hlp msvcrt20.dll pbrush.exe <-not really needed. I put the above on a floppy and ran MSPAINT from File Manager. Seems to work on -any- 32-bit OS. I have -not tested the PAINT95.EXE one yet. ***edit2 - Yep, it also works. I put it on a DMF (1024 cluster size) and ran MSPAINT (same way).
  9. What about searching? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/143008-how-do-you-include-drivers/ Several links to tried-and-true methods. The method for Win7 is (nearly) the same as XP. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/139572-ask-your-seven-xml-here/#entry892782 For drivers needed during PE phase: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/139572-ask-your-seven-xml-here/#entry913017 I added USB3 drivers for an add-in card using the above for a MoBo that the USB2 ports failed on and had no PS2 ports. HTH
  10. You have gotten a virus, obviously. It "kills" registry entries upon Startup. Your other Topic - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173327-what-is-the-best-way-to-upgrade-from-win-98-to-win-98-se/
  11. Like this - http://www.ebay.com/itm/MICROSOFT-WINDOWS-98-SECOND-EDITION-UPGRADE-CDROM-and-MANUAL-/301038602089 Retail or Upgrade will work. OEM will not. edit - a cheaper one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsoft-Windows-98-Second-Edition-SE-Upgrade-Retail-CD-w-key-/261738909003?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cf0dacd4b HTH
  12. ...which automatically uses RegEdit. Now, just for grins, look inside the $OEM$. Perhaps you neglected to read this? http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/14/ IOW, I didn't give you that link to explain "everything", just a starting point. Do browse the *whole* Unattended Guide. Yep, you did *exactly* what I had explained (but a variation) using a BAT/CMD file. I don't really have time to run through nLite scenarios to explain it all in detail ATM. Here's the nLite screenshots (the one you reference is there) - http://xdot.tk/nliteimages.html HTH edit - Correlate what the $OEM$ structure is to this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environment_variable Remember, the $OEM$ folder is copied to the %SystemDrive% (generally, C-drive) to the definition of the Subfolders (as stated in the previous links). You would probably have had to use a Variable in your BAT/CMD to indicate *where* a given File is located.
  13. @LithiumKid1976 - Yes, you have missed a (several) step(s) - 1 - Go here to get MS Link (read that post!) Note: 7-Zip can extract it. Run the file indicated. 2 - Physically -replace- the "xxx.DLL" that's in "Windows\System32" with the one(s) inside the "xxx.CAB(s)" Step 1 installs v2.56. Install it via Command Line with additional parameter(s) using program "WUA-Downlevel.exe". https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/aca02d86-0fd9-48cd-96cc-040aea84126f/windows-update-agent There is -no- "install" of the Cabs indicated. They simply "replace" v2.56 with v2.57. You -only- need the MUWEB one if you had opted for Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update. Please do read the whole thread. You might also be interested in this thread, which will "build" a "Windows Update Agent" for v2.57 for you. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/157027-windows-update-agent-which-version-do-you-have/ Again. please note "WU" is Windows Update (Windows-oriented Components only) and "MU" Is Microsoft Update (other than, e.g. MS-Office) HTH
  14. "$1" represents the Root of the target System Drive, not the "Windows" Folder. Look again at this - http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/18/ The "COMMAND.TXT' is where you place a series of Coomands to run, including any executions of a BAT/CMD file.that may need to be used. These would be where you might place (e.g.) "REG ADD" instructions inside of a BAT/CMD files. "Runonce" done at "User First Logon". Here's an article on installing Office (as well as further unattended info) - http://www.svrops.com/svrops/documents/xpunattend.htm Don't confuse the Office Customize adding of REG entries with the explanation I gave above. Those have to do with Office and become part of the Office Install Process, not a Generic Registry Alteration (which can apply to anything). HTH
  15. Look this over - http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ You *really* want to use "REG.EXE" and not "RegEdit". Why on earth do you want a GUI program used in an nLite Unattended?
  16. Are you overclocking? 17. SSD's making grinding noise? Sounds like you have an entirely different hardware component causing problems.
  18. Network card? Do you mean Modem? http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1073769671 I don't think your "labtop" has a Network Card (NIC). UNLESS it has a Card stuck into the PCMCIA slot. http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Networking-Wi-Fi/2065cds-pcmcia/td-p/38407

    FDV fileset for XP

Run nLite and compare output to HFSLIP+FileSet output. Or not...
  21. ??? Wonder what could be in that TEMP folder? Usually nothing you need - BUT! 1 - In Safe Mode, Run 7-Zip, navigate to it (HILITE it), and click "Add" at the top, i.e. Create "TEMP.7z" file (note - just in case there's something "important". 2 - Delete the CONTENTS of TEMP, not the whole folder. 2a - In Windows Explorer, navigate to it, select all files WITHIN it and DELETE them (you have a backup) 3 - In Control Panel, selet "Internet Options" (or just run Internet Explorer->Tools->Internet Options) and click on 3a - Delete Cookies 3b - Delete Files 4 - Just for fun, "Empty Recyle Bin" Try again Windows Update. I assume "<user name>" is your Profile/Signon name (PLEASE tell me you edited those lines for your post)? This shouldn't be relevant nor should such a small amount in your TEMP folder with 10gb available. The "Package" should create a Temporary FolderName (generated) on the largest available free-space partition. It almost sounds like a permissions problem, judging by the screenshot. edit - Googled on the Error Message - few references - one of which is a Trojan/Virus/Malware. You may want to get MalwareBytes downloaded and run it. Also SpyBot. It seems *very* odd that you can't install the WU file. Try going to the "Windows\System32" folder, right-click on CMD.EXE and "Run As... -> Administrator" to get a "DOS" Box to run the WU.... (VERY odd...)
  22. You said So, you have both On-Board -and- the Add-In showing in XP? YES, I realize you got -different- Motherboard and CPU. Thanks for finally giving a link to what you -originally- ordered. Now, I've downloaded the Manual for the Gigabyte. Have you read yours yet? SURELY they gave you one. If not, go get it from the link I gave! It has a setting in BIOS for the VGA. As I said, those "screws" can NOT be an "interference, as -again- (if you look in that manual) they -belong- there - STUDS, not SCREWS! The USB3.0 -should- be usable (I think) with the correct drivers. "Renesas" is probably what you want -but- we won't know unless you -look at the Device Manager- for those that fail and let us know -1 - WHAT they say for a Description 2 - WHAT the "Ven/Dev" values are that show for them I have an NEC Add-In USB-3 that -does- have XP support. If one of the "failing" is the Network, Realtek -surely- has drivers for it. Please report back with -all- information (including the CPU-Z -and- maybe GPU-Z output) so we can get on with it. At your next opportunity, please. Side note: The Manual doesn't quite give -all- specifics, thus the need for the above information.
  23. Yep! http://xdot.tk/ and make a slipstream -or- http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171171-introducing-unofficial-windows-xp-sp4/ and make a slipstream. In any case, for a running XP, install IE8 and run Windows/Microsoft Update. There's a direct link to MS for IE8 in the first link above. You may need to also install this ( ) - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/157027-windows-update-agent-which-version-do-you-have/ (note: read through the topic to find the attached "build" script and instructions) You -may- not need it.
  24. Those two "screws" 1 - On-Board Motherboard VGA (has "two screws") 2 - "connected the monitor via 210 gxc graphis card" In both cases those "screws" are the Offset Studs that should REMAIN ON THE ON-BOARD AND THE CARD! The monitor should have NO SCREWS. I'm betting that when you disconnect the Monitor from the Card that you're unscrewing the STUDS along with the Monitor Connector. Take them OFF the Monitor Connector and put them BACK INTO the Card and snug/tightne them. This sometimes happens when the Monitor Connector is attached too tightly (more than the studs screwed into the device). SNUG MONITOR ON, NOT TIGHTEN! Now, I've encountered a Motherboard (inside a tower) having the On-Board VGA Connector "covered" on the back side of the Tower and an Add-In Video Card used instead. AFAICR, this "disabled" the On-Board -but- there COULD be a setting in the BIOS to disable On-Board -or- a Jumper on the Motherboard. After setting the Jumper/BIOS to Enable On-Board, removing the Cover (back of tower) -and- the Add-In, then the On-Board was functional. HOWEVER, this was -specifically- done because the On-Board uses ("steals") Computer RAM to be used by Video and -usually- is much less (usually about 4MB->32MB, maybe more) than the REAL RAM installed onto a REAL Add-In Card. BE FORWARNED! Note: I haven't looked at your MoBo BIOS/Specs to determine if this is, indeed, your case. (Checking now... GA-H81M-H - be right back...) Edit: So... why the Monitor is on an Add-In Graphics Card? That's a LOT of "stolen RAM" you could use, depending on what you already have in the two RAM slots. This is what you said: So, is it already in a Tower? (looking now...) EDIT2 - found this only (what you originally ordered?): http://www.amazon.com/MSI-MicroATX-Motherboard-H61M-P31-W8/dp/B0097WLXW6 (what you got?): http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4737#ov
