  1. Rather than include the Q199886 smartvsd.vxd fix in the 98 Standard SP: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=199886 Include v4.10.2222 of the smartvsd.vxd file from 98 SE. Win98 FE does NOT include smartvsd.vxd BUT Win98 SE does. Ver. 4.10.2222 of smartvsd.vxd should work ok under Win98 FE.
  2. Um, MGDX. Can you try implementing the Q249824 fix in Win95's version of VOLTRACK.VXD? If you read Microsoft support article 249824 carefully, the problem also occurs on Windows 95 systems as well.
  3. better the 4.10.2228 of secur32.dll file, Petr. DCOM 98 has secur32.dll file v4.10.2177 and using 4.10.2000 may break v4.71.3328 of dcom98 and the W9x DSClient. powercfg.cpl 5.0.3103.1000 does NOT work under Win98 FE, Petr. Tried using that and loading the Power Management control panel app in Win98 FE did NOTHING! So Powercfg.cpl v5.0.3103.1000 is for Win98 SE only AND the Q258680 patch is really meant only for Win98 SE (NOT FE).
  4. I don't think that you would ruin your system. It is easy to put any microcode to UPDATE.SYS - if you know what you need, let me know. Petr <{POST_SNAPBACK}> yeah I take back what I said earlier; one might use update.sys v4.10.2223 under a Win98 FE system. however, Win98 FE can't properly identify Intel pentium 3 & higher cpus & higher intel chipsets on newer mobos. Win9x users using non-intel motherboards should download & install the latest motherboard drivers. Win95 & 98 fe users who have Intel MBs or MBs with intel 430Tx, 440xx, 800 or 8xx series chipsets MUST download & install v3.20.1008 of the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility here: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...&OSFullName=All Operating Systems〈=eng those using Win98 SE or WinME w/ Intel MBs or MBs with the intel chipsets mentioned earlier should get v6.30.1007 of the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility here: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...ystems〈=eng For those Win98se/WinME users looking for the update.sys updates, see MDGx's web page: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm or use the download links from MDGx's recent post.
  5. Note carefully, MGDx, that KB896358 does NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT completely replace the 811630 updates, which have the hhctrlui.dll file. The KB896358 security updates do NOT have the hhctrlui.dll file. The KB811630 updates for Win98 & ME have the hhctrlui.dll file; I know for sure.
  6. Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1 is the last one to work under Win95, 98 FE & NT4. Acrobat 6.x requires Win98 SE (NOT FE), 2000, Millennium or XP/2003. I'm not going to get Acrobat 7. more bloated than versions 5.1 & 6.x. Currently I have Acrobat Reader v6.02 and have installed the 6.03 Update. Recently released today or late yesterday--- New version of Opera browser available: 8.01 http://www.opera.com/download/ fixes a bunch of security problems and some display & javascript problems. New version of Netscape browser available: 8.02 http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/default.jsp this one should fix most of the crashing problems found in 8.0 & 8.01. btw - Winamp 5.09 lite loaded less than a second on my WinME & WinXP machines [both using pentium 3 cpus]. updated release mentioned at the majorgeeks.com site which should fix some recent security problems.
  7. The Windows Server 2003 SP1 version of KB896358/MS05-026 security update contains version 5.20.3790.2427 of HH.EXE, HHCTRL.OCX, ITIRCL.DLL, ITSS.DLL & HHSETUP.DLL files. The Windows XP SP2 version of KB896358 has version 5.20.3790.2453 of those five files. And the Windows 2000 SP3/SP4 version has 5.20.3790.309 of those files. See bulletin MS05-026 and expand the "Security Update Information" section and expand ALL branches of that section. perhaps, MDGx should include the XP SP2 version of those five HTML Help files in his unofficial HTML Help pack since they are the latest version [but include the GDR version, not the QFE version]. just a suggestion. For those using IE 5.5 SP 2 instead of IE6 SP 1, you can try installing the KB883939 WinME patch for IE 5.5 under Win98. download the patch here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...b7db183dec4.exe view its contents in Winzip, extract all files onto a temporary folder and run the command, ieupdate.exe Q883939. This will make the IE 5.5 Sp2 kb883939 patch install on Win98/NT4 SP6 system with IE 5.5 SP2.
  8. I think MDGx means that Q242161 vmm.vxd patch should be used under Win98 FE because Q242161 has v4.10.1999 of vmm.vxd file for 98fe and v4.10.2223 for 98se. Q288430 has vmm.vxd file v4.10.2226 for 98se only.
  10. does this site work with netscape 8 browsers?
  11. The scoop about the fixed VOLTRACK.VXD [sent by patch author]: Fixed VOLTRACK.VXD 4.10.1999 [patched by the same person who sent KRNL386.EXE] works on the 2 PCs I've tested, with both 98 FE + 98 SE.Note that VOLTRACK.VXD patch is English, NOT Japanese. I made 1 installer for 98 FE and 1 for 98 SE [total of 4 = see links above] because the "TargetWin9xVersion=" directive in the SED file [i used IEXPRESS.EXE from XP SP2] allows to install only on 1 specific OS build. This line: TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.2222 allows to install only on 98 SE. This line: TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.1998 allows to install only on 98 FE. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> MDGx, have you tried using "TargetWin9xVersion=4.10"? maybe that will get your Win98 patches you created to install on any Win98 version. azagahl, Q329048 is NOT a new security update. It's an old one mentioned in security bulletin MS02-054. it may have newer posted date at Windows Update, but it still an old patch. Using BROWSELC.DLL & BROWSEUI.DLL from WXP/W2003 can make W9xME systems unstable or even unbootable. dont do it. Before installing HTML Help KB896358 update under Win98/ME, remove MDGx's Unofficial HTML Help 5.20.3790.1830 patch first by deleting hh.exe from Windows folder and by deleting the hhctrl.ocx, hhsetup.dll, itircl.dll and itss.dll files from the Windows\System folder; then apply the 896358 Win98 patch. BTW - KB896358 Win98 patch is created from v4.72.2811.0 of Iexpress/wextract.
  12. when you say you restart in MS-dos mode, you mean you selected the Restart in MS-DOS option from the Win98 shutdown menu. check your autoexec.bat and config.sys files from the c:\ folder to see what is loaded from those files. also, check the dosstart.bat file from the c:\windows folder to see what is being loaded from that file. The dosstart.bat file is used when restarting to MS-DOS. something from either of those three files I mentioned might be causing scandisk to not work properly.
  13. it's more likely gsjunker must have installed the full edition of winamp 5, which might take a little longer to load than the lite edition of winamp 5. i even installed winamp 5.09 lite on my neighbor's win98 pc (pentium 75mhz with 64 megs of ram), and it loaded for about 3 seconds. the lite edition of winamp 5.09 mostly has the basic winamp player and nothing else. azagahl, Opera 8.0b3 is no longer available as it reached the final release in late April. Go to the Opera web site and download the final version of Opera 8.0.
  14. How about combining the Q243450 esdi_506.pdr and VOLTRACK.VXD Q249824 fixes, MDGx? I mean, put those two updated win98 files into one patch. also, see my post edited on June 10, 2005 on the first page of this thread.
  15. sure thing, MDGx. But be sure to revise your "Unofficial Windows 98 KRNL386.EXE build 4.10.1999 Fix" and post it as 98KRNLUP.EXE & make sure it installs on both Win98 FE & SE. that will elliminate the need to release it for separate editions of Win98. I will sent Q242161 to MDGx first, Petr. Once he has it, you will be able to obtain it from his web site. -erpdude8
  16. ok I have now obtained the Q242161 vmm.vxd hotfix for Win98.
  17. so far, I've tested Tihiy's modified regedit.exe file and it only works under Win95 sr2, Win98fe & Win98se; ran it in both Windows & DOS environments. I have not tested it under the original & SR1 versions of Win95 which have MS-DOS 7.0. Win95b & Win98 have DOS 7.1. so right now I recommend Win95b & 98 users to use Tihiy's regedit.exe file while those using Win95 orig./Win95a to get the other modified regedit.exe file from that web site I mentioned earlier and avoid using Tihiy's regedit.exe file.
  18. There's a patch for this problem but it only resolves the Mprexe page fault problem only if your Win98 FE or Win95 computer is connected to a Novell network. See MS kb article 192249 for the patch: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=192249 this problem doesn't affect Win98 SE & WinME users. If the patch doesn't fix the problem then look at MS kb article 178084 for other solutions.
  19. ...and if Win98 hotfixes Q192117, Q254087 , Q265528 & Q329128 are not available by this fall or winter they may not be available anymore and MS may have been silently pulled them off their hotfix servers due to problems we are unaware of. Q242056 might be available as Q242161 hotfix. will try to ask MS for Q242161 instead of Q242056 as Q242161 has the same version of vmm.vxd file as Q242056. I'll keep you posted on this one, Petr -erpdude8
  20. Winamp 3 & Winamp 5 slow??? yeah right? are u using a slow computer, gsjunker? I have Winamp 5.09 on my P3 766 mhz machine and my bro's P3 1.2 Ghz machine and it loaded fast & ran ok. I downloaded the lite version (uh yeah, Winamp comes in different editions so if you want to use the version of Winamp without the unnecessary features, get the Lite version of Winamp 5 instead of downloading the basic or full edition of Winamp 5). The latest release of Winamp fixes recent security flaws found in previous releases. The creator of Spybot has written some articles & reviews on certain types of programs. Go here to see a list of download managers: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/article...d-managers.html the one I use is Download Express from Metaproducts; freeware Go here to see a list of file sharing apps: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/article...aring-apps.html ones I recommend are WinMX & Shareaza; both are free
  21. FORGET IT, eidenk! There's NO esdi_506.pdr fix that wil support very large HDs for Win9xME systems beyond 137 gigs. so get over it! Read topic on 137 Gb limit - esdi_506.pdr and other limits: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=46752 If you want to use a 400 Gb HD, use Win2000 or XP and use NTFS file system as NTFS handles 100Gb & higher capacity HDs very well, unlike FAT32 which is crappy for drives bigger than 100 gigs. Note that some existing hotfixes (such as Q230791,Q265528 & Q329128) may no longer be available due to unforseen problems these hotfixes cause.
  22. Four megabyte video cards whether built into the MB or standalone are crap to DX 8.1 & higher. replace graphics card with eight megs of video RAM or higher. otherwise, stick with DX 8.0a if you don't want to use a video card with more video memory. The Microsoft American Flag Screen Saver which I downloaded here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/Win...mericanFlag.EXE will NOT work unless you have a 3D graphics card with at least 8 [NOT 4] megabytes of video RAM and at least DirectX 8.0. You will not be able to view MS's American Flag screensaver with video cards that have 4 megs or less.
  23. hmm, since you have not responded for a few weeks from your post, shawn604_3, looks like you resolved your problem. So this thread is now closed.
  24. Q217189 Tapisrv.exe is included in the Win98 SP1 Q232972 update; Q277623 does not exist.
  25. MDGx, I have NO problems whatsoever using iprop.dll from NT4 SP6a under my WinME computer and my neighbor's Win98 machine. so to me, it's pretty much safe to use it. No, newest IS the one from NT4 SP6a. I interpret iprop.dll from NT4 SP6 as version 4.00.1381.0326 and iprop.dll from dcom95/dcom98 as version 4.00.1381.0004.
