I also use Nero but I use version 6.3.1.25 under both my WinME and my brother's WinXP machine. Try updating Nero 6.6 to version 6.6.0.18 here: http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php Also, try burning your CDs at lower speeds. Burning any CDs or DVDs at super high speeds are more likely to have problems. Install Adaptec's ASPI driver version 4.72 [NOT version 4.61]. if not, revert back to Nero 5.5 but use version 5.5.10.56 which is the latest Nero 5.5 release.

Gape, The Unofficial Win98 SE service pack version 2.1a is NOT posted at the Majorgeeks.com site. they still have the original version 2.1 file [sesp21en.exe] even though they say they have version 2.1a. The newer one [sesp21a-en.exe] was posted at the Softpedia.com, Rapidshare, Mytempdir.com and Freeware Files.com sites but not Majorgeeks.
-
I have also found a typo in the opening WinME service pack dialog box. --------------------- UNOFFICIAL WindowsME Service Pack 2.0.2 This update is only for *ENGLISH* version of Windows98 SECOND EDITION (4.90.3000). This update is NOT from Microsoft. It is a unofficial compilation of Microsoft's update files and more. --------------------- The next alpha or beta release of the winme SP should be corrected to say: "This update is only for *ENGLISH* version of Windows Millennium Edition (4.90.3000). This update is NOT from Microsoft. It is a unofficial compilation of Microsoft's update files and more." I first thought that I couldnt get the winme pack from the Rapidshare site but I did. I was lucky my dialup connection was a little faster and stable enough to get it, even though it took about an hour to fully download the pack.
-
I couldnt agree more with eidenk. post the WinME SP at a site other than just Rapidshare, the_guy. alpha versions shouldnt be posted at Majorgeeks & Softpedia yet. beta versions of the winme SP, maybe. see the "New 98 FE + 98 SE + ME patches available" topic for any new ME patches received by MDGx. I think the WinME pack should first show a dialog box to clearly warn users to disable WinME's SFP feature first, otherwise the SFP feature will reject many of the updated files from the ME pack and the pack will be worthless. alpha 1 of the unofficial WinME service pack did NOT prompt users to disable the winme system file protection feature before running the WinME pack. To disable SFP in ME, open the MSConfig tool and uncheck the *StateMgr entry and reboot. I would also disable the PCHealth [PchSchd.exe -s] entry for a little faster startup and less interruptions while using ME.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Many thanks for your offer.Petr sent me those patches too. [thanks Petr] Now I have these new patches that I need to post [unsorted, some may be posted already]: - Windows ME: ME268452.EXE ME272620.EXE ME289635.EXE ME300889.EXE ME301540.EXE ME304708.EXE ME307908.EXE ME309081.EXE ME311430.EXE ME314417.EXE ME321635.EXE - Windows NT 4.0 Workstation: KB823803.EXE KB824105.EXE KB840987.EXE KB841356.EXE KB841533.EXE KB873339.EXE KB873350.EXE KB885249.EXE KB885835.EXE KB885836.EXE KB891711.EXE KB896358.EXE ____________________________________ eidenk: About OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522: I've been using it for at least a year, and I've tried tons of programs, tools, games etc in 98 SE. Works ok so far. BTW: I just installed eMule 0.46c [newest version available at http://www.emule-project.net/]. Works ok. I'm using: ASYCFILT.DLL 2.40.4526 OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 OLEPRO32.DLL 5.0.4526 STDOLE2.TLB 2.40.4526 which are installed by running [newest versions from Win2000 Q886765 hotfix]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/OLEUP.EXE found here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE together with other older OLE Updates. Note: OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4526 is the only file that doesn't work properly with 98/98 SE/ME. Hope this helps. Before installing WinME Q321635 hotfix, install Q305826 hotfix first. When I installed the WinME Q305826 patch on my ME machine, it removed the hard drive "spin-down" feature when attempting to put the PC on either standby or hibernation. Installing Q321635 on top of Q305826 or Q302103 restored the HD spin-down feature. minor correction: version 2.40.4526 of the oleaut32.dll file will not work properly under Win95, 98, ME and NT4. see if Petr sent you the Q278368 patch for ME. -
The patch wiSHmaKeR made also worked with the Win98 FE version of Notepad.exe. heck, both Win98 1st and 2nd editions contain version 4.10.1998 of Notepad.exe. so the patch works for all versions of Win98. thanks miko for the link to the metapad program.
-
um, where is the link to the new version of MetaPad?? I use the plain ol' Notepad to open small .TXT files; many of them I work with. wiSHmaKeR, can you make a patch for the Windows ME version of Notepad.exe?
-
nah, I think those crypt files from Win2000 SPs and W2k updates can break WinME & probably any third party apps used under WinME. just use the crypt files from WinME's Q329115 patch for stability for now. since that link you gave is a Rapidshare site, I wont download it with my dialup connection. I'll hold off until a beta (rather than an alpha) is posted other than at the Rapidshare site.
-
Wintop? nah. too cumbersome. Timezone editor? ok but use the one included on the win98 cd. DOS mode config wizard? only if you use a lot of DOS programs, otherwise, leave it out of the pack? WRONG, bristols!!!! Q885836 is NOT an IE6 SP1 update. It's a Wordpad security update. See Microsoft Security bulletin MS04-041 and Microsoft KB article 885836: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms04-041.mspx http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885836 The 98se pack contains some IE 5.x updates; updates for the built-in IE 5.0 browser originally included in Win98 SE.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
heh-heh. I'm finished voicing out my frustration in trying to get the 98 standard edition service pack, to no avail. it was sure agonizing attempting to download it from Rapidshare with a dialup connection and failing each time. so let's ask Petr (let's all ask him nicely, people) to post a copy of fesp201 at a different site like winpack.org or the Megaupload or Yousendit sites. -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I have a HP pavilion machine with pre-installed ME, I used to have those GDI problems several years ago. I just got rid of the apps that have caused those GDI crashes; some apps I have upgraded to reduce the chances of the GDI problems from happening. I no longer have those GDI problems anymore, regardless whether I had the U891711 patch or not. it's usually those 3rd party apps that arent written well and more likely to cause those GDI crashes. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
you might also want to try upgrading emule to the latest release, eidenk. OLE automation files build 4518 were first included in the original release of IE 6. MDGx, Petr sent me the Q268452, Q301540 and Q304708 ME hotfixes. let me know if you need them. -
note that these "crypto" system files require IE 5.x/6.x as they BREAK earlier versions of IE (such as IE 4.x & earlier). The OLE components from Win2003 SP1 should be for Win2003 systems only. They're incompatible with Win9x/ME systems and can break 9xME OSes. NO PETR! OLE update 4526 (KB886765) is NOT OK under WinME. It broke the Help and Support Center program included in ME. Q240896 opengl32.dll NOT necessary under WinME. original opengl32.dll file in ME is fine and has copyright years from 1981-1997, while the copyright years from opengl32.dll file from Q240896 is from 1981-1996. WinME's opengl32.dll file does NOT have the problem in MS article Q240896. as for Q258680, Deskw95.cpl ver. 4.72.3717.300 can be used under WinME. Powercfg.cpl ver. 5.00.3103.1000 is NOT compatible under WinME. Original powercfg.cpl file in ME is 4.90.3000.1. Q245272 EnhTrig.dll ver. 4.10.2224 might be safe to use. WinME originally included v4.10.2223 of that file. Hi, the_guy, sorry to say this but the WinME pack is no longer available at the YouSendIt site [link or download has expired]. any other site you are aware of where I can download the ME service pack?

Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
and U891711 should also be included in the upcoming 98 Gold service pack 2 as well. -
how about including the U891711 patch Gape. seems stable enough to include it instead of Microsoft's KB891711 patch for Win98/ME. be sure to include Q240896 opengl32.dll fix. I might get the alpha release of 98 Gold SP2 to see what it looks like through my friend's DSL connection since I found it impossible to completely download it from my dialup connection at the Rapidshare.de site. W98 hotfixes Q265528 and Q329128 are no longer available from Microsoft support as I was told. one could try calling MS support instead of emailing them for those two fixes though the odds of getting them by phone are slim to none. anyone brave enough or have some spare time to make a windows millennium service pack? just asking.

rainyd makes a great point. either the geforce fx 5700 graphics card needs to be replaced with a different one (or with another fx 5700 card if yours is defective) or the motherboard needs to be replaced with a newer one that can accept newer types of AGP cards. the socket 7 motherboard using amd k6-2 cpu is kinda old.
-
i think your motherboard is old and incapable of properly handling the GeForce FX 5700 graphics card. you need to buy a newer mobo that supports newer AMD processors like the AMD Athlon 64 kind and newer memory modules. I bet the newer mobos should handle the geforce 5700 video card pretty well. it isn't a Windows issue. it's more of a hardware compatibility issue with the mobo and nothing to do with whether the mobo capacitors work ok or not. plus, shaddam, you did not specify what type of DFI motherboard (model no.) your computer is using.

IE 6.0 SP1 cannot open Https pages
erpdude8 replied to lilliccu's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
see if the W98se pack 2.01 Italian has the correct version of the shell32.dll file in Italian, not English. that might be why the Find problem is happening. ALL updated files in the pack should be in italian unless a system file is noted "Language Neutral" in the file's properties sheet. -
KB891711 Windows 98 Security Patch finally fixed!
erpdude8 replied to Tihiy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
to be fair and not be all negative about Tihiy's TI891711 patch, it did work okay under win98se systems as i've tested it on one 98se machine. when I installed it under other Windows 9x platforms like 98fe and ME, I got different results. TI891711 was useless under winme and it gave a few BSODs under win98fe. TI891711 was meant for 98 SE only and wasnt flexible enough to work under other win9x systems. it offered protection against rogue 32-bit apps but not 16-bit apps. -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
thanks MDGx. I think the un-install string from the U891711.INF file needs one minor tweak. change "Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE/ME Q891711 Patch (remove only)" to "Unofficial Windows98/98SE/ME Q891711 Patch (remove only)" so that the word "only" is fully displayed in the Add/Remove programs control panel dialog box. Gape might want to include U891711 instead of Microsoft KB891711 in his 98se service pack. -
USB/NTKERN Problem after update installation
erpdude8 replied to tcobb64's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
you may want to un-install the 98se pack, tcobb64. then un-install and re-install the canon i450 printer drivers to see if your printer will work properly again. found out at the Canon support site that the i450 printer only connects to usb port, not parallel port. might want to get a different printer that can connect to either a usb or a parallel port, just like my HP deskjet 630c printer which can connect to either port. -
USB/NTKERN Problem after update installation
erpdude8 replied to tcobb64's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Here's where you can find info and the latest drivers on the Canon i450 printer: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controlle...=13&Submit.y=17 and if you still have problems operating the Canon i450 printer on a USB port with the 98se pack installed, unplug it and connect the printer onto a parallel port. you will have to un-install the drivers first, then re-install them, then tell the printer driver that it is connected to an LPT port instead of a USB port. -
recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
So, just to get this straight, if someone were to request a patch (like this one) in such a way, would it be unlawful to redistribute it in patchers such as Gape's SE SP2? Does anyone know? Boy it has been a year since sybesma started this whole topic on requesting hotfixes by email. kudos bigtime for that guy. without him, guys like me and some others wouldnt be asking for these fixes. puting only the updated files from the 98se hotfixes in gape's SP, ok. posting the actual 98/me hotfixes (aka. the exe patches that are named for example: 237493usa8.exe, the Q237493 patch) may not be legal unless you have gotten actual permission by MS. I know with certain 98se hotfixes like the Q242937 WDM Audio patch, some sound card makers/vendors had to get permission from microsoft to redistribute Q242937 along with the sound card drivers. other words, yes and no. MS04-007/KB828028 is superseded by MS04-011/KB835732. The KB835732 security patches have newer msasn1.dll files than KB828028 plus some updated Windows specific system files into KB835732. -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I have uploaded the correct version of the patch with modified SED file [please see post # 31 above], which now allows to install directly on WinME, and even if official MS05-002 patch was already installed, it properly overwrites it.Same behavior if installed on Win98 FE or 98 SE: U891711 can be installed over official MS05-002, it will properly overwrite the MS files, which are older builds [even v2]. I have also replaced "hotfix" with "update" in the text file. U891711.EXE [110 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/U891711.EXE U891711.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/files/U891711.TXT Please try it out at your convenience. your welcome, bristols. sorry for overreacting about the winamp 2.81 thing. if you dont use it much, you may want to un-install it completely, anyway windows media player can play MP3 files. MDGx, you need to date the U891711.TXT file as 11/03/2005 instead of 10/04/2005 to reflect the change in the text file. it's good that you made the correction to the text file but you didnt make the changes I suggested with the U891711.INF file. top of the contents of the u891711.inf file still say "Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE Q891711 Patch" and the un-install string still says "Unofficial Q891711 Patch (remove only)". Make those changes to the U891711.INF file I mentioned in an earlier post. if you need the changes I made to the u891711.inf file here they are again: change ";Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE Q891711 Patch" section to ";Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE/ME Q891711 Security Patch" and change "Unofficial Q891711 Patch (remove only)" to "Unofficial Windows 98/ME Q891711 Patch (remove only)". and be sure to date it 11/03/2005 because that is when I modified the u891711.inf file. I know when microsoft make revisions to original patches being released, they put a different or newer date to reflect the changes made from the original to the revised patches. MDGx might want to follow suit with U891711. -
more about the "empty icon buttons on the taskbar" problem discussed earlier: as long as the Win98 Q891711 MS05-002 security patch [either by MS's KB891711 or by U891711 or even TI891711] is NOT installed AND you are using user.exe & user32.dll files versions 4.10.2226 or earlier, the empty icon buttons on taskbar problem wont happen. the bug doesn't bother me much at all as I can easily click on the empty icons on the taskbar to make them disappear. glad to hear from you again, CLASYS check this out Gape--- There is a hotfix for the ASN.1 Vulnerability for Windows 98. It was discussed here: http://www.webservertalk.com/archive93-2004-2-128285.html (though Q835732 has newer ASN.1 fix) Someone there called MS support and was sent the Q828028 [MS04-007] security hotfix for Windows 98. If you read MS security bulletin MS04-007, it does NOT even mention Win98/ME. so Win98 & ME systems ARE affected by the problem. This means that new but non-critical security patches for Win98/ME are available but you have to contact microsoft support to obtain them. I think I might ask MS for the Q835732 MS04-011 patch for Win98 before year 2005 ends.
