  1. No Gape. Q314941 will STILL have to be left out. Look inside the Q314941 Win98 patch! The files inside are WINME versions. WinME versions I tell you!! You include these files in your SP, you are going AGAINST your policy of not including WinME version files. I thought you need a WinME license if you're going to put WinME versioned files into your 98se SP. Q314941 has ssdpapi.dll version 4.90.3003, ssdpsrv.exe version 4.90.3003 and upnp.dll version 4.90.3003.0. They are NOT v4.10!!! Got that Gape. So it'll have to be left out.
  2. um, can you list the steps on how to create an install disk to put UPnP on a Win98 fe/se system? I think this requires connecting a Win98 computer to a WinXP computer.
  3. that's right. parts of WinME such as the WinME spoolss.dll file can't be included in a Win98 fe/se SP (unless Gape has a license to legally put some WinME files in his 98se SP). however, the WinME spoolss.dll file should be included in MDGx's 98se2me pack. ask MDGx if that file is in his pack.
  4. WRONG!!!! Q282949 and Q314941 can be installed on BOTH Windows 98 first AND second editions. As long as Q282949 sees that you have installed WMI/WBEM 1.5 from MS article 322363 under any version of Win98, the patch will work. I'm not kidding. I've installed WMI 1.5 under Win98fe and Q282949 worked. When I try to run Q282949 w/out installing WMI 1.5, the patch refused to install the updated file. Q314147 snmp.exe & snmpapi.dll patch you CAN install with or without the SNMP network protocol installed from the Win98 CD. Run 314147usa8.exe file for yourself Petr and you will see! The snmp.exe file isn't installed on a normal Win98 setup. If you want, you can install the SNMP Protocol from the Win98 CD (look for the SNMP folder on the Win98 CD; there's an .INF file that will install the SNMP Protocol and the snmp.exe file should be there). Q314941 is a little tough. If you do NOT have the Universal Plug & Play service from an WinXP-ICS client installed on a Win98 system [read Microsoft support article 314941 VERY carefully, Petr; pay attention to details there], the Q314941 will NOT work. Email CLASYS on how to install the "security-flawed" UPnP service on a Win98 system.
  5. To fix the spoolss.dll problems in 98fe, Petr just overwrite that file with the WinME version [4.90.3000]. that's all. You can also do this for Win98se and not bother using Q250514. in fact using WinME spoolss.dll file under Win98 fixes more problems than what Q250514 does. MDGx's spoolss.dll fix for 98fe/se IS 4.90.3000, but do NOT use this under ANY version of W95 as it wont fix the spoolss problems under 95 and can mess things up. btw- Q196527 has dvdplay.exe v4.10.1999; for 98fe only.
  6. Arrow, since you mentioned Office 97 Pro, you should install the Office 97 SR2b update to fix numerous problems with Office 97. SR2b requires SR1, so if you are using the original release of Office 97, install SR1, then install SR2b and then apply ALL of the post-SR2 security patches for Office 97. good idea to not let parts of your antivirus software and changing disk cache size to improve performance.
  7. This fix is only intended for WMI (WBEM) installs. WMI is not installed as part of original 98 + 98SE. Only ME installs WMI as mandatory component.Available here: Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE WBEMPROX.DLL Fix [194 KB]: http://www.autourdupc.com/Logiciel/WIN98/S...82949_win98.exe WMI/WBEM for 9x is available here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#WMI <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The Wbemprox.dll Q282949 fix requires WMI 1.5 because the wbemprox.dll file included in the patch is version 1.50.1085.45. WMI version included in Win98 SE is v1.1. Install WMI 1.5 from MS article 322363 first, then install Q282949. Forget about Q230766 and Q243174, Petr. Better to install DirectX 8 or higher because the problems in those two patches are already fixed in more recent versions of DirectX. better yet, install DirectX 9.0c which fixes a security flaw in security bulletin MS04-016. There's NO individual MS04-016 security patch for DirectX addon for Win98/ME because the security flaw is non-critical. Microsoft no longer releases new security patches for Win98/ME unless the vulnerability is "Critical" as they say.
  8. Q318307 does not have updated msmouse.vxd file Gape. Q318307 only has updated vmouse.vxd file. I said in another thread that Q318307 is included in Microsoft Intellipoint 4.12 mouse software. The msmouse.vxd file version(s) that cause mouse lockups might be the ones that are included in Intellipoint mouse software. It can NOT be used without Intellipoint. You may want to consider getting the Q254660 msmouse.vxd 4.10.2223 patch as this one is Win98se specific, not Intellipoint specific. Q282949 wbemprox.dll requires WMI 1.5 which is NOT included in Win98 SE; you won't be able to add it on to your pack. Win98se has an older version of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) which is version 1.1. MS forgot to mention in support article 282949 the version number of wbemprox.dll file and the WMI version the patch requires. Q282949 has wbemprox.dll file v1.50.1085.45. Original version of that file that came with Win98se is 1.10.698.0000. Using Q282949 under the bundled WMI in Win98se (v1.1) might mess things up and that's why you need to install WMI 1.5 first. Q329128 was not available when I asked MS support more than a week ago. will try again on this one in late May or early June. Q314941 will also have to be left out because it requires UPnP which is NOT included in Win98se. CLASYS mentioned how to get Q314941 to work under Win98se here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=40226&st=10 The links to old Ben Waleehm's web site no longer works, MDGx. The web.archive.org site is also dead. I get no response when going there.
  9. nope. I take this back. tried asking for three different Win95 hotfixes from microsoft support and have been told that they've ceased ALL support for Win95. guess they don't have any existing Win95 hotfixes anymore. so, this thread can NOT be used to request any Win95 hotfix nowadays. it's way too late for this. if anyone is still using Win95 (hopefully not), it would be best to upgrade to Win98 or higher. however, the tips described earlier on obtaining hotfixes might still work when asking for NT4 hotfixes.
  10. EXACTLY! YOU SAID IT, Fredledingue! The files are modified, NOT hacked! Sometimes Microsoft doesn't do a good job modifying or fixing those files and may require those non-MS specialists to clean up the mess MS caused. I did get a chance to test out Tihiy's 891711 patch. It turned out to be a double-edged sword. had it's pros & cons. worked perfectly on my old Win98 SE computer my aunt now has but it caused a few blue screen crashes on my neighbor's Win98 FE computer. And it refused to install under WinME. oh i nearly forgot, Tihiy's patch is a Win98-only patch. Reason why I like the official Microsoft patches better is because they cover ALL 98/ME systems. so MS has the 891711 updates for Win98 FE, Win98 SE and WinME. hopefully Tihiy can make a WinME version of his 891711 fix so I can test it out on my HP computer that has WinME on it. As for some remaining 98 se hotfixes like Q265528 & Q329128, lets save those for version 2.01 or 2.10 of Gape's SP as those aren't offered by MS right now. may have to try again in late May or early June to get those.
  11. sorry. Gape has just about all the hotfixes from Windows Update for Win98 SE. he just needs a few that are not obtainable from any MS web site and that they require contacting Microsoft support to get them. nice try though, Bethrezen. Note that Windows Update does NOT offer hotfixes, they offer updates. Do not confuse hotfixes with updates. Hotfixes are patches that are usually obtainable by asking Microsoft support for them. Updates are patches that are available for download at either Windows Update or Microsoft Download Center. See MS article 824684 on the standard terminology used to describe Microsoft Software Updates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824684/
  12. Sadly, Microsoft just emailed me saying the Q329128 hotfixes are not available at this time (at least I got a straightforward answer, so I'll have to take their word for it). So Petr and Gape, lets forget about Q329128 for now and let's wait for about a month to see if MS will offer it. Q252187 esdi_506.pdr v4.10.2226 was included in SP v1.2 but was removed in future releases of Gape's 98se SP (starting v1.5) due to causing lockups before Windows 98se loaded on some systems. instead of fixing the lockups on some machines, it actually did the reverse in causing lockups in other PCs. So the Q252187 fix is for certain computers only [install Q252187 on IBM Thinkpad 600x machines only and do NOT install on other name brand computers].
  13. Uh, yeah there's always the email method of asking for Microsoft hotfixes. I got some of the Win98 & ME hotfixes by MS for free by emailing them. Search this forum on how to request hotfixes by email. As for MDAC, you can find different versions of MDAC here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/mdac/downloads/default.aspx I would install MDAC 2.5 SP3 first on a Win98 system, then install MDAC 2.8. You can download MDAC 2.5 SP3 here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/e...cf/mdac_typ.exe As for MS Jet, MDAC 2.5 & higher have Jet 4.0. Install Jet 4.0 KB837001 security update here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2...B837001-ENU.exe MS says its for NT4 but it can also work under Win98.
  14. UH, what was it you're trying to say to me??? you're pathetic, hp38guser! ...and Tihiy's 891711 patch is missing an uninstall feature while Microsoft has the uninstall feature of their KB891711 patches for W98/WME & they DO show up in the Add/Remove programs control panel app. dont give up Tihiy! your 891711 patch needs improvement. it took Microsoft to get things right the second time around with KB891711 for W98/WME.
  15. For Q277628 vfat.vxd patches, see MDGx's software essentials page: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm I sent him the vfat.vxd hotfixes for W98/WME more than a month ago. search for vfat.vxd on his page and you should find them. so I don't have to send you Q277628. As for msmouse.vxd v11.x, you need the complete Intellipoint software. having msmouse.vxd v11 by itself w/out intellipoint installed may lockup the system as Gape said. But if you install the whole Intellpoint mouse software (either version 4.01 or 4.12), it should work fine. My younger brother bought a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical device several years ago but it came with Intellipoint 3.2 software, which was buggy and caused a lot of random mouse movements in random directions. Updated it to at least v4.01 and things were stable. Intellipoint 4.01 is the last version to support Win95 and v4.12 is the last to support Win98, ME & NT4. Versions 5 and higher will only support Win2k/XP. Let me handle obtaining Q329128 patch for you Petr. if you can't get it from MS, let me do it instead as I have a very good success rate in asking them. You can only request one hotfix at a time. It won't work if you try to request multiple hotfixes at once. And it also depends on the MS support rep answering the hotfix request. Most reps are smart but there some that are just UNintelligent & could lead you in circles. Read the whole forum thread on requesting hotfixes from Microsoft: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=31579
  16. The only problem I have with Tihiy's UNofficial 891711 patch is that it has user32.dll file version 4.10.2232. This is for Win98 SE ONLY. darn it! Using this one on Win98 FE is a BIG MISTAKE and can corrupt Win98 FE systems. Tihiy's patch should have TWO versions of user32.dll files. One specifically for Win98 FE [Gold] and one for Win98 SE. back to the drawing board! HEY! The Q291362 patch for Win98 has TWO versions of user.exe & user32.dll files. Read MS support article 291362: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291362 Q291362 has v4.10.2001 of user.exe & user32.dll files for Win98 FE Gold and v4.10.2231 of user.exe & user32.dll files for Win98 SE. Tihiy should modify the Win98 FE version of user32.dll from Q291362 so that it'll be v4.10.2002 when implementing KB891711. AVOID Tihiy's patch if using WinME [unless he can make a specific ME version]. The user.exe/user32.dll files in WinME are 4.90.300x.
  17. you said almost every hot fix for WinME, theuuknown. hah! i have some WinME hotfixes (such as Q296883, Q305826 & Q316795) that can only be obtained by contacting MS support. least you can do it by email. it'll be nice if there would be a WinME SP but don't expect one in the immediate future.
  18. thanks for the short info, lleoliveira. My Win98 & WinME systems have never reached those registry limits. In fact, the bigger the registry files get, the greater the chance you will have registry problems. these registry problems can make Windows 9xME systems less stable. if you are near the limit I would suggest running Registry Checker (DOS) version with the /opt switch. Type scanreg /opt at the DOS prompt outside of Windows to compress the registry files. Small registry files mean better performance and less problems with the registry.
  19. Sorry for acting up last time. But let's get one thing straight. I do NOT hate Tihiy's solution to the 891711 security problems (in fact I like it). And it was a nice idea to modify the user.exe/user32.dll files 'til MS posted the newer security patches. I did not expect Microsoft to release V2 of the 891711 updates for Win98/ME so soon. But like I said before, Tihiy's way is unofficial while Microsoft's way is official and I prefer to stick with using official solutions to resolving ALL the security issues of Win98/ME. I will give Tihiy's solution a try sometime this week on an older PC with Win98. perhaps we should ask the Microsoft QFE [quick fix engineering] team why they chose to use the kb891711.exe & q891711.dll files instead of patching the user.exe & user32.dll files for Win98 & WinME to fix the 891711 security bugs. Hoping for big things in May such as Spybot S&D 1.4 (which is currently in RC2) and the final release of SP 2.0 for Win98 SE. I'll be occupied with beta testing Spybot 1.4 RC for a few weeks until it reaches the final stage.
  20. And Q254660 is piece of crap silly hotfix for W98. It only added support for the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer mouse and not newer Microsoft mice. As for the hotfixes I have, you should receive them sometime this Friday. I'm kinda busy working on more important stuff and I have to find the cd where I stored the W98 hotfixes on. I requested them from MS back in late March. I do a great job asking them and MS does give me what I want, most of the time.
  21. Found version 5.6 of Intel Processor Frequency ID Utility here: ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/3084/eng/fidenu25.exe Last version to work under Win98 Gold [1st edition]. Version 6 & higher require Win98 SE. And for those using the very obsolete Win95 OS, one could try version 4.0 found here: ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/3084/eng/fidenu18.exe The next release after 4.0 is 4.5 which dropped Win95 support. It's just that intel doesn't seem to mention the old versions anymore at their site.
  22. Intel ONLY offers the LATEST release of the Intel® Processor Frequency ID Utility which is version 7.2. So you won't be able to find any previous versions of the utility there. If you need version 7.1 of that tool go to this page: http://www.msfn.org/comments.php?shownews=9020 As for Win95 support, versions of Intel® Processor Frequency ID Utility starting from version 4.5 (not 5.6) no longer support Win95 as stated in Intel's support page: http://support.intel.com/support/processor...b/CS-007636.htm Also no longer available from Intel. If you want to use much older versions of Intel® Processor Frequency ID Utility in Win95/98 you'll have to do a search on them at some search sites if you're lucky enough to find them. At least the bootable version of the tool is available at the Intel web site.
  23. whups, almost forgot. I sent a copy of Q290831 scsiport.pdr WinME patch to MDGx a month ago. so now it is listed at his web site. don't know why Gibson said to ban UNNP. I totally agree with CLASYS. best to patch the UPNP security problems and keep up to date.
  24. You wrote for opengl32.dll: "Is this file freely available so it could be added to the service pack?" Ask MDGx on how to obtain the opengl32.dll file and glu32.dll file from Windows ME. If that doesn't work, email me so I can send you these files. Q192845 vmouse.vxd is NOT needed Petr. Install Q318307 vmouse.vxd patch which is included in Intellipoint 4.12 software. When you install MS Intellipoint 4.12 mouse software [which requires Windows Installer 2.0 for Win9xME], the Q318307 patch for Win98 gets installed automatically which has vmouse.vxd version 4.10.2225. Q318307 CAN be installed under both Win98 FE and Win98 SE. Q190715, Q193473, Q195564, Q196008, Q242939 & Q277628 hotfixes; I HAVE these, Petr. Click on my username and send me email. Q233017 pci.vxd 4.10.2018 patch for Win98 is listed at MDGx's web site: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm Scroll down his page and find the patch titled "Microsoft Windows 98 CardBus TI 14xx or 44xx Card Controllers PCI.VXD build 4.10.2018 Fix". As for msmouse.vxd v11.40.852, ask Gape why it was left out of 2.0 RC. Better to install the whole Intellipoint software and not get Q254660, even if you're using a non-MS Intellipoint mouse. I'm working on getting Q329128 patches for Win98 and WinME. Note for Win98's Q329128, you need the DUN 1.4 Q285189 update for Win98. Turn down once by MS but will try again.
  25. BUT DO NOT INCLUDE TIHIY'S VERSION IN YOUR SP, GAPE!!! Besides, Tihiy's solution to me is just a temporary solution until Microsoft finally posted a revision to the 891711 fixes. Installing both 891711 fixes (both Tihiy's and MS's) is a VERY BAD IDEA! Microsoft had posted an updated version of their 891711 security patches at Windows Update earlier this month. So before installing the revised 891711 update for Win98, UNINSTALL Tihiy's unofficial 891711 fix first. Then apply the newly revised 891711 fix from MS. Hey, maybe MS could not implement the 891711 fixes in the user.exe/user32.dll files for Win98/ME and that's why the fixes require additional files. BTW, note to MDGx, if you have not received the Q270063 ndis.vxd from Gape yet, forget it. I will ask MS for the Q329128 hotfixes for Win98 and WinME which have newer ndis.vxd, pppmac.vxd & vip.386 files and will send you & gape Q329128 when I get them.
