  1. Actually Rhelic, the MS05-002 security updates for Win98 & ME were released on March 8, 2005. Microsoft security bulletin MS05-002 was posted in mid January 2005 but back then the Win98/ME MS05-002 updates were NOT available at Windows Update. The Win98/ME MS05-002 KB891711 updates also conflict with certain proxy and firewall software AND can cause BSOD errors when trying to startup Win98/ME. Please see these DSLReports.com forum pages on the problems the MS05-002 updates cause for Windows 98 & ME systems: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12905229~mode=flat http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12875676~mode=flat
  2. I wonder if Tihiy can implement the Background Intelligent Transfer Service [bITS] feature that is included in Windows 2000, XP & Server 2003 onto a Windows 98 & Millennium system. BITS is what makes Internet Explorer resume interrupted downloads. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) FAQ page: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community...s/bits_faq.mspx BITS can also resume downloads at the V5 Windows Update site: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ The V5 Windows Update site only works with Windows 2000, XP & Server 2003. Windows 98 & ME users attempting to go there will be redirected to the V4 Windows Update site. when I downloaded a file in IE6SP2 on my WinXP SP2 system then I stop it halfway, then I selected the file that I had stopped downloading, it picked up where it left off. Tried that on my old Win98se system with IE6SP1 and it did NOT resume downloading the file.
  3. yeah, Fredledingue has got a good point. I don't care about style points. The shutdown menu in Win98 is good enough for me so why bother changing it.
  4. You are absolutely right - that's why i'm not developing it. There can be no compromise now. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Bummer. well you guys can try out the Coolkill tool MDGx suggested to me a few months ago. found it here: http://www.prowebsitemanagement.com/cooltools/coolkill.html I use this tool to close some unnecessary apps.
  5. Well said azagahl! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well DONT TELL THAT TO MICROSOFT! Sheesh! When MS makes the final release of IE7 they will only make it xp-compatible. I got confused on the main topic in this thread titled "Possible Additions For The Next Major Version" Uh yeah like next major version of WHAT? Whoever started this topic needs to be more specific on the title. next major version of IE? next major version of the Win98se SP? Be clear on what the subject will be here.
  6. nah. I prefer the older shutdown menu that is built in Win98se so I can do the restart Windows trick. The trick is to hold the Shift key (the left Shift key) while selecting the Restart option in Win98's shutdown menu and it will restart Windows instead of restarting the computer and going through the whole boot process. The restart Windows tip saves some time.
  7. I used the following way. 1. Go to the following address. http://support.microsoft.com/select/?target=assistance 2. Click on "Microsoft Windows Update" link. http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?Gprid=6527 I could obtain the hotfix from manager. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> hmm that method might work HSI but it's better to do what Sybesma said back when he started this topic in emailing MS. BTW, MDGx was sent the English version of the Q320798 kernel32.dll Win98 patch. Guess you can request a patch in almost any language if MS has it in the language that is specified.
  8. integrated in the next version of the 98se SP? NEVER going to happen Tihiy! Besides, IE 7 is XP SP2 compatible only. forget it! IE7 is for XP and Longhorn systems. Read this article by Paul Thurrott on IE7 Preview 1: http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/ie7_preview_1.asp IE7 isn't going to be Win2000 compatible either. what a darn shame for them too.
  9. That's the example of downloading the first IE6 SP1 setup file for Windows ME. If you want to download the corresponding setup file for Win98 go here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6...-US/IE_S1.CAB Open the ie6setup.exe file in Winzip, extract the iesetup.cif file and view the iesetup.cif file in Notepad to see what setup files you need for your version of Windows. The only good reason to use IE is if your third party program requires it. The other advantage is that IE loads much faster than the latest non-IE browsers on slow computers. Other than these two reasons, dump IE if you can & if you find no use for it.
  10. Good call prathapml. Best way to get rid of IE is to use IEradicator. It safely removes IE under Win9x systems. I'm currently beta testing Opera 8.0 beta 3. looks good. should be something when it reaches the final release. Firefox is also a good alternative to IE. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> um, sorry prathapml. Disagree with the part that Opera has almost no security problems. The thing is that ALL web browsers whether it is Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Mozilla or Firefox are prone to security problems. When security flaws for Mozilla, Firefox and Opera browsers are found the makers of these browsers offer patches or newer releases to fix them. AND it is always imperative to use the latest version of Opera, Mozilla or whatever non-IE browser being used. I know the version of Opera I'm testing has a feature of checking for newer releases of Opera that are available.
  11. I agree with MDGx. The Compressed Folders feature is kinda lame compared to using tools like WinRAR, ARJFolder, Power Archiver and Winzip. Best to get Winzip 9.0 because it can handle ZIP files that use 128-bit and 256-bit high encryption. ZIP files that use 128-bit/256-bit encryption cannot be opened by the Compressed Folders addon. so let's scrap the ideas on installing the Compressed Features addon and stick to using archiving utilities like Power Archiver and Winzip.
  12. should the regedit.exe and regedit+.exe files be placed in the Windows folder? that's where I had the Win98se version of regedit.exe.
  13. Good call prathapml. Best way to get rid of IE is to use IEradicator. It safely removes IE under Win9x systems. I'm currently beta testing Opera 8.0 beta 3. looks good. should be something when it reaches the final release. Firefox is also a good alternative to IE.
  14. I have a BETTER idea, Jaymo and Shamgar on installing the Compressed Folders feature from the Plus!98 pack. Get the following files: dunzip.dll, dunzip32.dll, dzip.dll, dzip32.dll and zipfldr.dll then place ALL these files in the Windows\System folder and 'register' each dll file by typing the following: regsvr32 /s dunzip.dll regsvr32 /s dunzip32.dll regsvr32 /s dzip.dll regsvr32 /s dzip32.dll regsvr32 /s zipfldr.dll Registering these DLL files will enable Win98se to have the Compressed Folders feature. I won't bother downloading those batch files because you need to login with an MSN Passport account to obtain the batch files. You have to register with the MSN Groups site to get an MSN Passport account. ONLY MSN Groups members can actually download those batch files.
  15. Well...we are here to try... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You can try extracting the files from the Sis IDE driver package with Winzip since the package IS a zip file. Unfortunately, unless you are using Win2000 or XP, the .inf files aren't included in it for 9x/ME. Since you're using W98se you can only install the SIS IDE controller drivers through its setup program. So you're kinda stuck, Fredledingue. BTW I get the Sis IDE drivers here: http://www.sis.com/download/ since my system uses built-in Sis 630 graphics, Sis 7018 audio and Sis 5513 IDE hardware.
  16. U can d/l it here. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks MDGx. However, the Q240664/Q243220 Win98 rpcltccm.dll patch will need to be re-installed if you install the Q269874 rpcrt4.dll or the Q315575 rpcltscm.dll patch. Ask Gape again if someone sent him the Q270063 ndis.vxd patch for Win98se. The newer ndis.vxd file is included in 2.0 RC1 & RC2 of the W98se SP.
  17. Thanks, Gape! The install worked flawlessly, and the reboot thing didn't even happen until after the installation was complete. I just defragmented my machine and am wondering if RC2 has the same version of disk defragmenter as 1.62 had - it seems a lot slower. Thanks for all your work on this. I really love 98SE and am glad to have it working so well. ivman <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ivman, there was NO disk defragmenter tool included in SP v1.62 nor it was included in the 2.0 betas & RCs. If you need to replace the defrag.exe file with the WinME version download scanfrag.zip from MDGx's addons page. http://www.mdgx.com/files/SCANFRAG.ZIP The WinME defrag.exe file was included in v1.2 of Gape's Win98se SP but was removed in version 1.5 & higher of the SP due to "licensing" restrictions.
  18. according to this short article at this Bink.nu site: http://bink.nu/Article3605.bink Win2003 SP1 RTM, Win2003 x64 edition and WinXP x64 edition will come out next Monday, March 28, 2005. I'll check back with the Bink.nu site next Monday to see if Win2003 SP1 is in final stage. If you're going to release a 98SE2XP pack and an updated 98SE2ME pack with the newer font files, be sure to include the fontinst.exe & fontinst.inf files. This is what the fontinst.inf file should look like: (example only) [fonts] ARIAL.TTF ARIALBD.TTF ARIALBI.TTF ARIALI.TTF COUR.TTF COURBD.TTF COURBI.TTF COURI.TTF GEORGIA.TTF GEORGIAB.TTF GEORGIAI.TTF GEORGIAZ.TTF MICROSS.TTF TAHOMA.TTF TAHOMABD.TTF TIMES.TTF TIMESBD.TTF TIMESBI.TTF TIMESI.TTF VERDANA.TTF VERDANAB.TTF VERDANAI.TTF VERDANAZ.TTF COMIC.TTF KARTIKA.TTF LSANS.TTF LSANSD.TTF LSANSDI.TTF LSANSI.TTF TREBUC.TTF VRINDA.TTF When running the fontinst.exe file, it installs the fonts listed in the fontinst.inf file. A reboot is required in order to use the updated font files after installing them this way.
  19. Gape, do you have the Win98se Q270063 ndis.vxd patch? If so, can you send it to me? thanks.
  20. Absolutely NOT, hp38guser! Vmm.vxd should STAY vmm.vxd! Otherwise, things will get messed up and Windows will crash at startup when it tries to load the desktop. The vmm32.vxd file gets customized at Windows setup to work specifically for your computer. Vmm.vxd file gets installed onto the 'Windows\System\Vmm32' folder. I'll bypass 2.0 rc2 and wait for 2.0 final to come out.
  21. Noxious Ninja, can you send me the Q243220 patch for Win98? thanks.
  22. yea Niresoft's W9xME Task Manager app was ok but as Tihiy said it was coded in Visual Basic and requires some VB runtime files in order for Task Manager to work. It does have a few bugs but it did work fine on my WinME system. The niresoft.com web site (the author who created Task Manager) is history as it expired in mid-Feb. 2005. Good thing I downloaded the Task Manager tool back in late November of 2004 as it was working back then. Still, I prefer Coolkill (recommended by MDGx) to close or 'kill' some unnecessary programs that load at startup.
  23. The latest version of fonts Arial, Comic Sans MS, Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Times New Roman and Microsoft Sans Serif are included in XP SP2. I installed those on my old W98se and my HP computer with WinME and they work ok. The Microsoft Sans Serif font file (micross.ttf) is featured in XP only but that font works under any 32-bit version of Windows. I have an unofficial font pack I made myself which has those updated font files from XP that can install under W9x systems but I'm not going to release it. i'm not allowed to distribute it anyway.
  24. also Tihiy, can you make your Task Manager app display an icon on the System try just like the one from W2k/XP? Win2k/XP's version of Task Manager can also be minimized and can track CPU & memory usage.
  25. How 'bout tryin' Tihiy's Task Manager app mentioned here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=41515 wonder if this will be included in W98se SP v2.0.
