hopefully gape's SP v2.0 will be ready sometime in May. he should take some time to flush out all the bugs before 2.0 final. i don't mind. i will be busy beta testing Spybot S&D 1.4 RC which came out early last week. Spybot 1.3 was so buggy that I decided to trash it (aka. remove it) from my machines back in Dec. 2004. Spybot 1.4 beta 2 was OK but some parts of it didn't function well (hey it was a beta) but the RC version works great.

The Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack is obviously for Win98 SE [second edition] only and NOT for any other release of Win98 such as Win98 first edition. shawn604_3, the differences between Win98 1st ed. and Win98 2nd ed. are NOT so obvious. You actually have to "dig deep" in both of those versions of Win98 to see the differences. For example, Win98fe has embedded IE4 SP1 while Win98se has embedded IE5. Win98 SE has internet connection sharing (ICS) feature, Win98 FE does not. Win98se has improved ACPI [advanced configuration power interface] power management features than ones found in Win98fe. And Win98se supports more hardware because it has more built-in drivers for several devices than Win98fe. And note the versioning of the two editions of Win98: Win98 first edition is 4.10.1998. Win98 second edition is 4.10.2222.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
NO WAY! Win98 SE (2nd edition) is much improved over Win98 FE (1st edition). The unofficial Win98se SP does NOT work at all under Win98 FE because it's for Win98 SE ONLY! Win98 FE is version 4.10.1998. Win98 SE is version 4.10.2222. Differences between the two is that SE has FULL WDM [Windows Driver Model] support (meaning the driver files for WDM are only .SYS files, NOT .VXD files and that these WDM-based drivers can be used under W98/ME & NT5 systems), ALL Y2k fixes, and ICS [internet connection sharing]. ICS is not included in Win98fe. Plus W98 SE has numerous obscure big fixes to W98 fe and supports more hardware. I read one of soldier1st's post on another forum page that Win98fe is buggy and W98 users should upgrade to Win98se. I'm not kidding. Ask soldier1st yourself and you'll see. Better in the long run to use Win98se instead of Win98fe. Win98se can be used on older/slower AND newer/faster computers. Win98fe chokes on the newest computers and latest hardware and should be used under older machines. -
Hotfixes Remaining For Gape's Collection
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
CLASYS got some good points on UPNP. Hardly have any probs with it on my WinME and WinXP machines. btw, CLASYS, several months ago you were asking for Q290831 scsiport.pdr fix for WinME on another forum page. I have it. email me if you want it. I will work on obtaining Q329128 hotfixes for Win98 & WinME, HSI. Can any of you guys email MS for Q265528 vnetbios.vxd patch? Tried asking for it a few months ago and MS told me it wasn't available. -
Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
See this forum page on how to email Microsoft support for Win98 hotfixes: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=31579 I can help you out with some of the updates you need- Q189591 is NOT needed at all. Win98 Service Pack 1 includes this fix so get it here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/0...d349e/wucsp.exe Q189591 has v4.10.2018 of the fixes while Win98 SP1 has v4.10.2019 so install SP1. Q234697 is not neccesary as its only available in Japanese Win98 First edition, not English Win98 first edition. Read MS article Q234697 VERY carefully. Problem ONLY occurs in Japanese-language edition of Win98 and NOT any other language version. Q240896 is not needed. Use WinME version of opengl32.dll file to resolve problem. Q254660 NOT needed. Fix is included in Microsoft Intellipoint Software version 4.x. Q318307 is included in MS Intellipoint 4.12 Mouse software. download Intellipoint 4.12 at MS Download center. Q317796 not needed. Install DSClient for Win98 as noted in Microsoft support article Q323455 which includes Q317796. DSClient can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.catalyst.com/pub/cstools/support/dsclient.exe Q269239 vnbt.386 update is found at this web site (aka. Q264650): http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../264650usa8.exe Hope this helps you out. -
I totally agree with prathapml on this one. I have WinME pre-installed on my Hewlett-Packard Pavilion machine and it runs good. Though you need to install some updates AND some hotfixes that can be requested from Microsoft tech support to make WinME work right. WinME is basically Win98 TE (win98 third edition) and was designed for consumers & home users. ALL 9x versions of Windows were best suited for consumers/home users. WinNT, Win2000 on the other hand were designed for business & corporate users; Business/corporate users barely hate the 9X Windows versions because of their weak security features. ...and then came XP which came in Pro and Home editions. Maybe after Gape releases 2.0 SP final for Win98se, he might try to create an unofficial WinME SP. I have requested a bunch of WinME hotfixes from MS for several weeks now and have installed them on my HP computer.

Microsoft Admits Patch Ms05-002 Problem!
erpdude8 replied to Rhelic's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Microsoft has admitted to the problems the first release of the MS05-002 security updates for Windows 98 and Windows Millennium have caused. But recently they have posted new releases of these updates. Those using Windows ME click on the following link: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...9a9d05d2eed.EXE Those using Windows 98 click on the following link: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...443b0208e0e.EXE So far, nobody on the net has reported problems with the newly re-released MS05-002 Win98/WinME security updates. -
KB891711 Windows 98 Security Patch finally fixed!
erpdude8 replied to Tihiy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I NOW recommend AGAINST using any unofficial patch like Tihiy's as MDGx recently gave me the links to download the newly revised KB891711 updates from Microsoft. Link to get Windows 98 KB891711 Update V2: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...443b0208e0e.EXE Link to get Windows ME KB891711 Update V2: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...9a9d05d2eed.EXE Use these updates instead as the kb891711.exe and q891711.dll files are now version 4.10.2223 instead of 4.10.2222. -
Critical Updates Missing in SP 2.0 RC3
erpdude8 replied to *~*WiseWords's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
randiroo76073 is right on with KB891711; causes major BSOD problems at Windows startup, especially if using certain firewall or proxy software installed. See these web sites on the problems KB891711 causes for W98/ME systems: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12905229~mode=flat http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12875676~mode=flat Hopefully the KB891781 and KB888113 W98 patches will be included either in 2.0 RC4 or 2.0 final. Let's see if Gape will include them if he can respond to this topic. -
KB891711 Windows 98 Security Patch finally fixed!
erpdude8 replied to Tihiy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Too bad it's for W98SE only since you modified the user32.dll file to v4.10.2232. I will use this ONLY under a Win98se system. As for the W98fe and WME machines that I have, I'll just wait for revised KB891711 patches to be posted by Microsoft. The user32.dll file Tihiy modified is NOT compatible with Win98fe and WinME and can break those versions of Windows. -
I find that comment VERY INSULTING, Tihiy!!! It's MY CHOICE alone to continue OR discontinue use of your shutdown.exe app on some of the machines I've tested the shutdown dialog box on, so don't try to stop me. The powrprof.dll file is NOT the problem. It's there in the Windows\System folder on ALL my machines, including the older machines that I've tested. ACPI-based systems use acpi.sys file to control power management features. The acpi.sys file is not installed on machines using APM 1.x for power management. maybe if I extract the acpi.sys file from the Win98fe setup file and put it on the W98fe machine, the standby option from shutdown.exe might work. That's just a theory though. Still I prefer what jasinwa suggested in having ALL the options shown in the shutdown dialog box without having to use Shift to show the remaining options.

There are other download managers out there, Shamgar. Most of these are great. Read the Download Managers article written by Patrick Kolla [creator of Spybot S&D] here: http://www.spybot.info/en/articles/download-managers.html my favorite is Download Express from MetaProducts. It's a download accelerator AND it's freeware. Great for Windows users. Download accelerators are more than just average download managers because they use multiple connections to transfer a file, resulting in somewhat faster download speeds.
-
Too big, utomo? Maybe for you but I don't see it that way. I also use dialup but my dialup connections are a little faster and more stable. Get a third party download manager if your dialup connections are not reliable enough to stay online for a few straight hours and if you need to download a portion of the 98se service pack on part of the day and resume downloading the remainder of the SP the next. otherwise, get cable or DSL if the area which you live in offers those kind of broadband internet services. those are fast and reliable AND now affordable.
-
Shamgar, the reason why the MSXML Patch 2.6 does NOT work is because you do not have the full MSXML 2.6 addon installed or do not have the original msxml2.dll file stored in the Windows\System folder. MSXML 2.6 for Win9x is included in MDAC 2.6, not IE (make a note of this MDGx). IE6 and MDAC 2.7/2.8 have MSXML 3.0. If you really want the MSXML 2.6 patches to work, download and install MDAC 2.6 SP2 here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/MDA...US/MDAC_TYP.EXE

hopefully rc3 will be the last rc before final. any chance of 2.0 final coming out late this month, Gape? If you read Microsoft support article Q320798 carefully: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320798 MS says that the problem happens on "Korean-localized versions" of Win98fe and Win98se. And in the Resolution section of that article there is a part that says "The Korean version of this fix...". It did NOT say "The English version of this fix..." So the issue most likely occurs on Korean editions of Win98 and may or may not occur on other language editions of Win98. Just wanted to point that out. Good thing the person who sent Gape the Q320798 kernel32.dll patch requested the English version of the patch and not the Korean version.

Microsoft Admits Patch Ms05-002 Problem!
erpdude8 replied to Rhelic's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
40 BIL huh? mou-ha-ha-ha! well Bill and company better find a way to fix the problems the MS05-002 security updates for Windows 98/ME have caused for many 98 & ME users. And the MS05-002 security updates for Windows NT4, 2000, XP & Server 2003 do NOT have those problems the Windows 98/ME versions have. -
yea I agree. All the shutdown options should all appear on one screen for better convenience. The Standby option from Tihiy's shutdown dialog box did work correctly on my WinME ACPI-based machine [Pentium 3 (Celeron) CPU]. However that Standby option still did NOT work at all under the Win98fe and Win98se machines. Those two machines use APM 1.x, not ACPI (and are those dinosaur-aged Pentium one pcs). I'm removing shutdown.exe off those machines and revert to using the built-in W98 shutdown menu which the Standby option from the W98 shutdown menu work as expected. I'll keep shutdown.exe on my WinME machine though. I might test shutdown.exe on my aunt's Dell computer (which does use ACPI for power management) and does use Win98 SE. I'll have to ask my aunt if I can come to her house next week.
-
Nope Imran. The MS05-002 update should NOT be in Gape's SP 2.0 RC2 pack. If it is, I'll remind Gape to remove it as it did cause blue screen startup problems on some Win98SE machines. Also note to Gape: before final release of SP 2.0 please include HTML Help Files that are included in Windows Server 2003 SP1 Final which are version 5.20.3790.1830. Obtain MDGx's newer HHUPD.EXE pack now which includes the latest HH files.
-
KOOL! I give the modified regedit files made by Tihiy two thumbs way up! Highly recommend it to anyone using Win98 or WinME. I'll ask MDGx on what he thinks of the new regedit files.

Can't Restart After Uninstalling Sp2.0
erpdude8 replied to Fredledingue's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I think the removal of SP 2.0 may have corrupted your Win98se system so it looks like you do really need to re-install Windows 98 se. If the W98se setup files are stored on your hard drive boot from a Win98se boot disk and go to the directory where you stored your Win98se setup files and run setup.exe to re-install Windows. we may as well hold off and wait until the final release of SP 2.0 comes out. it'll be more stable then when un-installing SP 2.0. -
Is There A Direct Link To 98se Ie Sp1 Download?
erpdude8 replied to Shamgar's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I have those 3 non-IE browsers installed as long as they are up to date. I checked the Opera 'changelogs' page: http://www.opera.com/docs/changelogs/?platform=windows on the changes made to Opera web browsers. newer releases not only fix security bugs but also fix other oddities like memory leaks, javascript problems, UI [user interface] enhancements & other non-security related bugs and adds more stability. Anyone using less than Opera 7.0 is considered to be doing a VERY POOR job updating their Opera browser. Best to use Opera 7.54 with U2 (update 2) installed: http://www.opera.com/windows/changelogs/754u2/?session= Someone mentioned earlier about getting the IE6 SP1 full browser download at the Green Apple site. Avoid getting it from the greenapple.com site. It's not the same size as the ones posted at the Planetmirror.com and other sites. And when downloading the full IE web browser download use third party download managers to start, pause AND resume downloads. -
It isn't hidden jasinwa. Hold the SHIFT key to show the other shutdown options like the Exit to DOS mode and the Restart option. Hibernate works fine on my WinME system Tihiy. I even tested it from your shutdown menu and it worked as expected. Exit to DOS and Restart options do NOT work in WinME as those options do NOTHING in Windows ME. Those options do work correctly on Win98. The "restart Windows" tip of holding Shift and selecting Restart from the built-in shutdown dialog box in ME doesn't work in WinME but the tip isn't really needed because the PC is kinda fast. Only other bug I found in Tihiy's shutdown dialog box is when I click on the minimize, maximize, or close button on a program window, the shutdown dialog box will close. The shutdown dialog box in WinXP does NOT let you click on anything BUT any of the shutdown options or the cancel button to close the shutdown dialog box. I will give Tihiy's newer shutdown app a try.

recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
cool hp38guser. Be sure not to translate certain files that are not language dependent like the riched20.dll file. That file I know is "language neutral" as noted in its file properties. -
Is There A Direct Link To 98se Ie Sp1 Download?
erpdude8 replied to Shamgar's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Exactly MDGx. Eventually hackers will find out how Opera works and find ways to exploit its security flaws, prathapml. Using ANY web browser (whether it's Opera, Mozilla or Firefox) that is several years old is NEVER a good idea as web standards are changing almost constantly and it's best to use the latest releases of web browsers possible. I don't mind if I have to update the Opera web browser once every year. Anyway the browser download is relatively small; I download the Opera browser w/out Java. heck, I can have Opera, Mozilla and Firefox ALL installed on my machines and they can all co-exist just fine. Shamgar, the following sites to get full install of IE6 SP1 DO NOT WORK: (outdated or bad links that I have recently tested): http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win...XPL/ie60sp1.exe http://ftp.gentoo.skynet.be/pub/ftp.micros...sp1/ie60sp1.exe http://smokeping.planetmirror.com/pub/www/...sp1/ie60sp1.exe http://download.au.kde.org/pub/www/browser...sp1/ie60sp1.exe AVOID using any of these sites as you will get a 404 Not Found error message. The rest of the links you mentioned work as expected. -
OKAY, mister wise guy! I did test out your shutdown dialog applet [shutdown.exe] on three machines. One using Win98fe, one using Win98se and the other WinME. Almost all of the shutdown options from your shutdown applet worked EXCEPT for the Standby option. The Standby option did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on the Win98fe and Win98se computers. And selecting Standby from your shutdown applet put my WinME computer into hibernation mode instead of standby. WHOOPS! That's it! I'll just stick with the built-in shutdown dialog boxes provided in my Win98/ME systems since ALL of the options in the shutdown menu built-in Win98 & WinME work EXACTLY as expected, including the Standby option which works on machines using either the APM 1.1/1.2 or ACPI power management standard. But look on the bright side, Tihiy, at least the most of the shutdown options in your shutdown dialog box you made do work correctly.
