  1. unfortunately some English files can't be used for the translation to Asian Languages (like Korean, Japanese and so on...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> that's too bad. then you'll just have to ask for the hotfixes for the specific language, such as Korean, Japanese, Chinese, etc. don't be surprised if MS tells you that a hotfix you requested isn't available in certain languages. I'll try to ask as many Win98/WinME hotfixes I can request, hp38guser. Perhaps you and others should try emailing Microsoft support so I don't have to feel like I'm the only one doing this and getting results. Instead of emailing MS support at: wrhelp@microsoft.com send your hotfix request here to this MS support email address: support@microsoft.com You may have to wait a few days (or maybe up to a week) for Microsoft to respond to your emails. The "wrhelp" address now takes too long.
  2. Speaking of Spybot S&D, version 1.4 has now been officially released. I've been beta testing the beta & RC releases of Spybot 1.4 for several weeks and commented on them at their forums. This new version is a major improvement over the previous one [v1.3]. Download Spybot S&D 1.4 final here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html Also newly released is Ad-Aware SE version 1.06: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
  3. is 98 SE installed on the C drive of your dual-boot machine? then the SP should work w/out any problems. if 98se is installed other than C drive, then the pack might cause trouble.
  4. nah. not comfortable putting UPDATE.SYS from 98se/ME under 98fe. might ruin a 98 FE system. oh well, thanks for responding.
  5. yea Win95 was something back in the late 90s. there were also addons/tools to make Win3.x look almost like Win95. best star wars episode to me is ep 6 - return of the jedi ; luke does bring his father out of the 'dark' side in the end.
  6. nope. you can safely install SP 2.01 regardless of DirectX version. DirectX 9.0c didn't hamper my neighbor's Win98 PC much but DX 9.0c DOES fix the DirectPlay security problem mentioned in security bulletin MS04-016. There's NO MS04-016 security patch for DX 8.1b for W98/ME. Only for Win2k/XP/2k3. DX 9.0c is preferable because it works best with 3d graphics cards with 8 megs of video memory or higher and resolves newer security flaws found in DX 8.1.
  7. well guys I'm back from beta testing Spybot 1.4 RC releases. They have NOW posted the final release of Spybot S&D 1.4. For those using Spybot under W98se, download and install Spybot S&D 1.4 NOW!!! If you had a beta or an RC release of Spybot 1.4, uninstall it and install the final version. MDGx, I will send you the Q262232 patch later in the day. Let me know if you need anymore patches. -erpdude8
  8. I also had the problem of black areas on the taskbar (but NOT on the desktop) when removing gape's SP 2.0 pack. that's because the pack restored the original comctl32.dll from the Win98 SE setup files. I found out about this a week ago. The problem occurs if IE 5.01, 5.5 or IE 6 is installed. Simply restore the comctl32.dll file from the C:\windows\sysbckup folder or restore the comctl32.dll file from the setupw95.cab file of IE6 SP1 by using SFC [system file checker] and reboot. Be sure to also store a copy of the comctl32.dll file from IE6 SP1 unto the Windows\sysbckup folder. That should fix the black area problems on the taskbar. Win98 se came with comctl32.dll v5.80.2614.3500. IE 5.01 & higher have comctl32.dll v5.81. perhaps in next release of the SP, it should NOT restore the comctl32.dll file from the Win98se setup files, especially if IE 5.01 or higher is installed under 98se.
  9. shawn604_3, are you really using Win98 FE [1st edition v4.10.1998] or Win98 SE [2nd edition v4.10.2222]. please describe what you did when the problem occured.
  10. I've been thinking Petr, how 'bout modifying or updating the update.sys file from Win98 first edition-gold to support or recognize Pentium 3 and Pentium 4 processors.
  11. Q230766 and Q243174 are also near-worthless patches that won't make it into the SP. The problems have been completely fixed by installing DirectX 8 or better. DX8 and higher work best with 3-D accelerator cards with at least 8 megs of video memory. see the New 98 FE + 98 SE + ME patches available topic on the patches MDGx have: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=46581
  12. EDITED ON AUGUST 25, 2006: ok mdgx. Still wondering if an unofficial Win95 Q249824 VOLTRACK.VXD patch will be made. MS KB article 249824 DOES mention Windows 95. The Win98/ME JSCRIPT.DLL MS06-023 fix for Win98 REQUIRES WSH 5.6 (build 8825) installed first. It wont work with other versions of WSH such as WSH 5.1 & 5.5.
  13. I've asked for Q254087 earlier this May and MS support told me it is not currently available. As for Q329128, I requested the WinME version of Q329128 and was told that wasn't available too. For Q265528 I've asked about this in late Feb. 2005; I was going in circles on that one 'til an intelligent MS support rep. told me that it was not available. let's try to ask Microsoft for those missing W98fe hotfixes in July or August. or even ask again in the fall 2005 season. maybe they'll have it then.
  14. I have iprop.dll version 4.0.1381.326 from NT4 SP6a which is dated 11/18/1999 and this version worked fine under my Win98 & WinME machines. I extracted the iprop.dll file from the full NT4 SP6 pack and put it on my W9x computers. It's newer than the iprop.dll file found in dcom95/dcom98. iprop.dll file in dcom packages is version 4.0.1381.6 dated 8/20/1997. i believe is the same version included in NT4 SP3. btw - Q282949 and Q285895 will NOT show up in QFECheck. These patches uses WISE Installer to install the updated WMI components. attempting to install Q282949 or Q285895 with the built-in Win98 version of WMI/WBEM (v1.0 or v1.1) will result in error message "The WMI Components that are installed on this system are incompatible with this setup or too old. Setup cannot continue." The Q282949 and Q285895 patches are for WMI 1.5 only and not older versions of WMI. atl.dll v3.0.8449.0 is included in IE6 SP1.
  15. you mean 98fe or 98se or all versions of 98. my aunt has an old laptop PC with 98fe and it still works well with most of the appropriate patches installed. an unofficial 98fe sp? i might want to try it out someday Petr if it ever comes out. -erpdude8
  16. Tihiy, I wonder if you can modify your regedit.exe file to bypass the need of loading setver.exe. If I run your regedit.exe file under Win95 original release which has DOS 7.0, it may give me an incorrect DOS version message. See this site: http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~flibble/regsmall.html The guy at that site modified a Win98 version of regedit.exe so that it will not require setver.exe.
  17. let's see if Gape can respond to this thread about a Windows ME SP. any chance of making an unofficial WinME SP in 2005 or 2006?
  18. I have a better idea, Gape! Why not include the whole XP ICS Client for Win98 addon onto your next release of your SP instead of including Q314941? Why I ask? Because when I copied the netsetup.exe file (CLASYS was telling me about in his email to me on how to create an install disk that installs upnp under Win98) from the Windows\System32 folder of my bro's XP SP2 machine onto a floppy disk, insert disk onto my neighbor's Win98se PC and ran the netsetup.exe file, it not only installed the XP ICS Client but also the updated ssdpapi.dll, ssdpsrv.exe & upnp.dll files. The XP ICS Client does have that required icsdclt.dll file that was needed in order for the Win98 Q314941 patch to work. ssdpapi.dll was version 4.90.3003.0 dated 8/4/2004 ssdpsrv.exe was version 4.90.3003.0 dated 7/17/2004 upnp.dll was version 4.90.3003.0 dated 8/4/2004 The XP SP2 version of netsetup.exe contained those files. ...or if you use the original XP release version of netsetup.exe on a Win98 machine, it'll install the XP ICS Client with the security flawed files and will require the Win98 Q314941 patch. Microsoft updated the netsetup.exe file for XP to include the Q314941 fix. The fix is already included in the XP SP1 & SP2 editions of netsetup.exe. If you want, Petr and Gape, email me and I can send you the netsetup.exe file that contains the XP SP2 version of the xp-ics client for Win98/ME [YAY! WOO-HOO! WHOOPEEEE!]
  19. MDAC is not only used in networking in transferring/receiving certain files, but also used in the Microsoft Access program in creating/editing MS Access database files, which I have with Office 2000 Pro. BTW - MDAC 2.8 SP1 is out. Has msxml3.dll file dated 2/18/2005. Viewed its properties and says XML 3.0 SP7. Get MDAC 2.8 SP1 here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/a...ff/MDAC_TYP.EXE personally, I'd install MDAC 2.5 SP3 first, then install MDAC 2.8 and then install Office 2k but I totally disable Zonealarm (or any other firewall sw) and the antivirus software. after I install the MDAC, Office 2k and 98se SP, then I'd re-enable the firewall & antivirus software. Also, use Zonealarm version 4 or higher. and if you still have troubles with MDAC & zonealarm Eck, i'd uninstall the zonealarm software first. then install MDAC and then re-install Zonealarm. i think there's some software conflict with zonealarm & MDAC, that's why I suggest removing or disabling zonealarm before installing MDAC.
  20. No joke. Q282949 and the Q285895 Cimwin32.dll fixes for WMI 1.5 will have to be excluded from Gape's SP. W98se contains an old version of WMI and these patches do NOT work with the old version of WMI. Both of these patches will check if WMI 1.5 is installed. If it detects WMI 1.5, the patches will install the updated files. If it's an older version of WMI or if WMI is not installed, the patches will not install the updated files.
  21. Petr, Q314941 is NOT a hotfix, it's a security update. Like I said on another thread, do NOT confuse hotfixes with updates from now on. Hotfixes are hardly posted on the web and usually obtainable by contacting MS support while updates are available online. Read MS article 824684 on the terminology used to described Microsoft software updates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824684/ might have been a little harsh on whether to include Q314941 or not, Gape. just go right on ahead. who am I to stop you? just got confused on the WinME version file thingy. I recently viewed the Q314941 Win98 patch in Wordpad and it mentions the icsdclt.dll file. This patch HAS to detect the presence of the icsdclt.dll file in the Windows\System folder or the patch will not work. I bet that file is from the XP-based ICS Client. only way you can install that is to network your W98 PC with an XP computer. meaning connect your Win98 PC to an XP PC, then set Win98 as the "host" computer and XP as the "client" computer and enable ICS on the XP machine. so for Q314941 Win98 update to actually install the updated files, the icsdclt.dll file must already be installed on a Win98 computer. BTW, I downloaded the revised root certificates update here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/rootsupd.exe and view its contents in Winzip, and the files inside are dated 1/26/2005. So this patch is newer than the one included in Gape's W98se SP 2.0. This newly revised patch should also be featured in the next release of the SP.
  22. There is no difference between OEM and Retail version in executable files, the only difference is in the license file and a few INF files. There is a possibility of semi-slipstreaming and then the updated Dblbuff.sys will be used during the installation - or not? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You CAN slimstream the updated dblbuff.sys file. though you must include it in the Win98 folder or wherever your Win98fe setup files are stored in (except on CD, unless you create your own W98fe setup cd & including the dblbuff.sys file). I did that and W98 setup did use that dblbuff.sys file. and you can keep it after Win98fe is installed. Another difference between OEM and retail versions of Windows setup is the setup order. Setup prompts you to enter a cd-key (the 25-alphanumeric product key) near the beginning of setup in retail editions. In OEM editions, it prompts you for cd-key near the end of setup. It has been like that with Win98, 2000, ME and XP. Petr, be sure to get others involved in trying out sybesma's thread on requesting hotfixes from Microsoft. I should not be the only one that has been taking action for several months now and getting good results in getting those hotfixes. I may be busy in the upcoming months and I may not be able to get those remaining W98/WME hotfixes.
  23. mdac 2.8 sp1 won't be in the 98se sp. KB890923, KB837009 & KB833989 require IE6 SP1 & OE6 SP1 so those will also not make it into the SP. KB870669, definitely add that onto the next version of the SP as it is just some registry fix. The revised "Root Certificates Update" which was re-released early Feb. 2005 should also be added. The root certificates patch can be found here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/rootsupd.exe Microsoft revises this patch at least twice a year. So Gape might want to include this newly revised patch into the next release of the 98se SP.
  24. no exceptions Gape!! Q314941 has the VERY SAME EXACT versions of the ssdpapi.dll, ssdpsrv.exe and upnp.dll files as that of the WinME Q314757 patch. again, it'll have to be left out of the SP. ...and UPNP was never included in 98. UPNP was first introduced in WinME and improved in WinXP.
  25. SPOOLSS.DLL is indeed installed by 98SE2ME, but u need a WinME setup CD to extract it from. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> bummer! Q209321 Dblbuff.sys patch for Win98fe can be left on after installing Win98, Petr. The issue mostly occurs with installing OEM [non-retail] editions of Win98fe on fast computers. some IBM machines that have OEM 98fe have Q209321 pre-installed. Q265528 CAN be installed under BOTH 98 FE and SE. Microsoft article 265528 is wrong! The Win95 version of Q265528 is included in the DUN 1.4 update for W95. The Win98 version of DUN 1.4, on the other hand, doesn't include Q265528. Q243048 Apmbatt.sys is only needed if you run 98fe on a laptop computer. useless on desktop computers. Q230791 is only needed if you actually use Firewire devices and that you have an IEEE 1394/Firewire expansion card installed to your computer and you use a firewire cable to connect your devices. I know for sure Sony computers have built-in Firewire/1394 ports. Even with Q230791 installed, Firewire support in 98fe is still weak and most 1394 devices really require at least 98 SE with Q242975 patch installed. Q196527 Dvdplay.exe - only needed if you have a DVD player installed to your 98 machine.
