...and if problems continue after restoring the vcomm.vxd file, remove the SP2 pack for Win98se. or upgrade to Win2000 or XP. I think Win2k or WinXP handles 5699 modems a little better than Win9xME systems.
-
have you tried restoring the VCOMM.VXD file to the original version after installing the 98se SP2 pack? there are 3 kinds of 5699 modems, one is 5699, one is 5699A, the other is 5699B; I use the third one. also, RedwingTech can you specify what resources your 5699 modems are using (like IRQs, memory addresses and I/O settings). Run System Information or Device Manager to get the resource settings of your modem. See any of the following USR Support pages on the 5699 modems--- 005699-00 support page: http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=5699 3CP5699A support page: http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=5699a USR5699B support page: http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=5699b

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Your OLE Automation Update needs to be revised again, MDGx. WinME users should revert back to OLE Automation v2.40.4522 files, ALL of them as v2.40.4526 of the files break ME's Help & Support Center feature. Helpctr in WinME will display a "cannot display page" error message when using v2.40.4526 of asycfilt.dll, oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll & stdole2.tlb files as I've recently used those files and tested them on my ME machine. Perhaps you may want to create a separate WinME OLE package (2.40.4522) that installs under ME only (like OLEUPWME.EXE). ALL of the OLE Automation files from the KB886765 patch should work properly under Win2k with SP4 installed; Microsoft forgot to mention in support KB article 886765 that the OLE patch requires SP4 to be installed first. however, when I installed the OLE Automation v2.40.4526 fix (including v2.40.4526 of the oleaut32.dll file) under my neighbor's Win98 SE system, things seem to run fine [everything loaded ok]. what was the problem with the oleaut32.dll file? and can you create an OLE automation v2.40.4526 pack that installs under Win95/98/NT4 only? it's just that the OLE Automation 2.40.4526 files loaded ok under WinME but the Help & Support feature stopped working correctly, so I had to switch back to v2.40.4522 of all the OLE Automation files for WinME Help & Support Center to function correctly again. -
Windows 98 PowerPack v3.0 released [details itt]
erpdude8 replied to jimmsta's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
that wont be a huge problem for users who have broadband internet connections using cable modems or DSL modems AND have installed any download manager/accelerator like FlashGet, Download Accelerator Plus, Lightning Download [derivative of Getright], or Mass Downloader (shareware) or even Download Express (freeware). sometimes I wish I were using my friend's PC who has SBC Yahoo DSL, where I can download very large files at 10 Mb per second. someday I should get DSL and kiss dialup goodbye. if any of you people are downloading this 300-Meg something package, use any of the download managers/accelerators that I've mentioned so you can start downloading part of it a day, then pause it and resume it the next day and so on until the whole download has been completed. I'll assume jimmsta's server does support resuming interrupted downloads and it is wise to use download managers & accelerators. It wont matter much if you have a slow connection or a fast connection just as long as you have a download manager/accelerator tool installed on your computer and you are comfortable using that download utility to download and resume your downloads. -
reason why this registry entry is required is because the Q329048 Win98/Plus98 patch detects this. If the registry entry doesn't exist or has a different value the patch will not work. If it is there then the patch will install the updated files. plus if you already have a ZIPping/UNZIPping utility (freeware or shareware) like Winzip or InfoZip, you do not need the ZIP-compression feature from MS [in Microsoft-speak, MS calls it the Compressed Folders feature].

You're only half right MDGx. If you want to install the latest IE 5.5 SP2 patch under 98/98se, 2000 or NT4, you have to extract the files manually to that TEMP folder and then run ieupdate.exe Qnnnnnn, where Qnnnnnn is the hotfix no. matching the corresponding MS article number of the patch. Running the "RUNDLL32 %windir%\SYSTEM\ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection C:\TEMP\KBxxxxxx.INF,DefaultInstall" with newly released IE patches will NOT WORK AT ALL!!! IT WILL DO NOTHING!! That's because the .INF file inside an IE patch in the DefaultInstall section says "Setupapi", NOT "Advpack". AND if you view an .INF file from most recent IE patches made from mid-2003 to now it begins like this: [Version] Signature = "$Windows NT$" instead of: [version] signature="$CHICAGO$" Also, copying the updated IE files manually in native DOS mode and overwriting them is a very bad idea, especially if you want to restore the older files at a later time if the updated files cause problems. ex. let's say you want to install the KB883939 IE 5.5 SP2 patch under Win98. normally the patch refuses to install under any version of Windows besides ME. In order to get it to install properly (my way), you extract the files from that patch to a TEMP folder, and then you run the command "ieupdate.exe Q883939" from the Run dialog box. If the IE files are stored in C:\TEMP I type in the Run box "C:\TEMP\IEUPDATE.EXE Q883939", wait for several seconds and the patch will start updating the IE files. You will have to restart the computer as the patch will not ask you to restart the computer. How did I know about running ieupdate.exe Qnnnnnn? Run ieupdate.exe without specifying anything.

Another thing you may want to do is after installing the Win98se SP2 pack, try using the original 98SE released version of the VCOMM.VXD file. This file is stored in the Windows\System\Vmm32 folder. open System File Checker [sfc.exe] and click on the button to extract a system file from the Win98se setup .cab files, specify the vcomm.vxd file and save it into the 'Windows\System\Vmm32' folder. btw - about the 630 error problem I had with my USR 5699B modem. I was using WinME, not Win98se. sorry for not specifying what version of Windows I was using. the USR modem I have uses IRQ 10 and it's on COM3. I had to make sure that serial port 2 is disabled from BIOS setup so that Windows can properly detect and operate the modem on COM3.

Windows Millenium Hotfixes problems
erpdude8 replied to eidenk's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
NOT a good idea, eidenk to post large downloads at the RapidShare.de site. I HATE downloading large files at Rapidshare, especially when using slow dialup connections. if users want to download large files at Rapidshare site, they should get a Premium account [which is not free] from there so that they'll be able to download and resume interrupted file transfers; or better yet, use a broadband connection like cable or DSL to grab very large files at Rapidshare.de site. A free account at Rapidshare wont support download accelerators and interrupted downloads will not resume. I gave Q316638 & Q252185 earlier than expected because there will be new Windows security updates that are coming out in the middle of October and I'll be getting those new security patches. -
Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
unfortunately, jimmsta, Petr's 98FE pack hasn't gotten too far so there is very little progress. ... jimmsta, if you need the 98fe SP you can get it here: http://rapidshare.de/files/2723154/fesp201en-a2.exe.html It's still in alpha 2 stage so is has NOT reached beta. I'll pass on the alpha and wait for beta 1 of Petr's 98FE pack to come out and hopefully the beta version WILL be posted at sites like Softpedia.com and Majorgeeks.com. If you really want to get v2.0 alpha 2 of the 98FE service pack from rapidshare.de use a broadband connection like cable or DSL to download the 19Mb file from there; dialup connections take too long and are too slow & more likely to botch your downloads, especially with this 19mb size 98fe pack. Unless you buy a premium account from Rapishare site, you wont be able to download, accelerate & resume your download with any download managers. Free accounts from Rapidshare will only provide slow downloads which is why I am AGAINST downloading ANY files from there if they are greater than 1 meg. -
a matter of convenience, pila2. why bother downloading and installing hotfixes and updates individually when you can apply the 98 se pack that installs them all in one package. besides, those hotfixes that do not appear in Windows update only resolve very minor problems and are only obtainable by requesting them from Microsoft support which may be a pain for some Windows 98se users. time to cease this thread and move on. hope that answers your question, pila2.

DirectX & IE6 updates are most likely NOT going to be included in Gape's SP. That'll make the pack very large and some people dont like to download gigantic multi-megabyte size files. Some MDAC updates are already included in the 98se SP, lightninglord2000. you need to specify which MDAC updates you would like to be included in Gape's pack. Note to BulStar: get Gape's 98se SP 2.02 and install it over SP 2.0 RC1 without removing/un-installing the older 98se pack. Then your MS05-002 Win98 security patch problems will go away. Like I said before, Microsoft fixed the blue screen problems by issuing a revised Q891711 patch for Win98/ME.
-
I believe you can also use those OLE Automation files under NT4 with SP6a installed. Wonder if there's a newer build of the oleaut32.dll file higher than v2.40.4522 that can work properly under Win9x/ME/NT4 systems.
-
Also, RedwingTech try testing out the modems with different versions of Windows such as Windows 2000, Millennium or XP even. the problem may be Windows related and may just occur with Win98se only w/ the SP. You may also want to run SFC.EXE (system file checker) from the Windows\System folder to check if some of the Win98se system files may be corrupted.

Before you actually move the modem to another slot, un-install the USR modem drivers first. then shut down your PC and move the modem to a different PCI slot, turn on PC, and re-install drivers. you might also try un-installing Win98se's Dialup Networking software and re-installing it. I read somewhere in the USR modem manual that the modem may not work properly if it is sharing an IRQ with another device and thus may require transferring the modem into another available slot. and if you still have problems after trying the suggestions above, you might as well have to live without Gape's 98se pack or use another modem. try asking a friend who also owns a US robotics modem to see if yours could be defective. it is quite possible that the USR modem you have might be defective. You can also try testing your modem on a different computer with either 98se or a different version of Windows to see if the problem is specific to your computer. You may want to post here ALL the system resource settings that your USR modem uses. Look in Device Manager or the MS System Information tool to see what resources your devices are using.

I have a question for maupec (if he decides to post again in the near future). Do you frequently use programs that really require pure DOS mode instead of using Win98? Suggestions by Rhelic and MDGx to get more DOS memory are wonderful.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
unfortunately, jimmsta, Petr's 98FE pack hasn't gotten too far so there is very little progress. Having the 98fe pack posted on only 1 site is nearly deplorable (and barely appalling, IMHO). Gape's 98se pack and Tihiy's Win9x Revolutions pack are posted at several sites including Majorgeeks.com and Softpedia.com. So Petr needs to find a way to post his 98fe pack to other sites. that way, more people will test out his SP. so I'm not sure how many people have actually downloaded AND tested the 98fe pack. my gut feeling tells me that few to none have really gotten the 98FE SP. in other words, the 98fe pack is almost a bust. -
Oh I can believe this, imho Win2000 BSOD on me a few times back in the day, but far less than my experiences with 95 or 98. Of course I also believe you have great drivers on your ME box and so-so drivers on your other setups. As I stated in a previous post, BSODs are often the result of your drivers not playing nicely with your system (and being triggered by something you or an app did). Despite your experience with WinME, 2000 and newer are far more stable than the 9x kernel can ever be because of memory protection and such. I can say from my experience it took well over a year of heavy usage before I ever got a BSOD on XP. I've found XP to be MS's most stable OS to date (ignoring DOS). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> WinXP is definitely stable with few or no crashes though it works best if you use it on new computers (whether laptop, desktop or server). Use XP on an old PC that is made from late last century and it'll be crappy. If your computer is made in 2001 or later, put W2k or WXP on it AND install the latest service pack for the OS (for Win2k it's SP4, for WinXP get SP2). If you have driver-related problems with ANY version of Windows, check the manufacturers' web sites for updated drivers (VERY important to install the latest drivers for ALL your hardware). Also check for BIOS updates for your specific kind of computer you are using. Some BIOSes in older machines may need to be flashed (aka. updated via a software) for full XP compatibility. Otherwise if your computer was made in Y2K or earlier, stick with 98se and install v2.02 of the 98SE pack. if you installed earlier versions of Gape's 98se pack, install the latest one over the previous version without having to remove the earlier one.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I can give you direct download link if you want. But the latest version is two months old already. Petr <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, can you give me the direct download URL to it? I would also suggest posting your 98fe SP onto a BUNCH of mirror sites, like with what Gape did to his 98se pack. Gape's pack is posted on at least 4 different sites, just in case one or some of them dont work or are too slow. -
gee, Rhelic. eidenk isnt the only one that likes WinME. I like it too. I still am using an HP Pavilion computer I got back in early 2001 that handles ME nicely, even up to now. note to siim04 about Firefox browser, upgrade to the LATEST version! I dont have any memory leaks with Firefox anymore with FF 1.07 when I use it on my WinME machine and on my brother's XP computer. If you still have memory leak problems, read this Windows Secrets article on how to fix the memory problems with Firefox: http://windowssecrets.com/comp/041202/ Superlevel, does your computer support a true Pentium 3 or Pentium 4 CPU instead of the Intel Celeron CPU? my brother's XP machine (1.2 Ghz Intel P3 w/ 384 Mb of RAM, uses XP SP2 home ed.) runs pretty well. try installing a Intel Pentium 4 processor if your computer can support it. Fredledingue has got a good point. Stick to the OS that you are most comfortable with, whether it is 98se, 2000, ME, XP or 2003.

Windows Millenium Hotfixes problems
erpdude8 replied to eidenk's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Q252183 [NOT Q252185] and Q316638 I'll send to MDGx sometime in middle of October. WinME users should install Q252185 patch first before installing Q252183 [drat, the Q252183 patch for Win98se users is available for download at Microsoft support while the WinME version isn't; had to request WinME Q252183 patch from them]. Q252183 & Q252185 resolve some crucial problems with WinME's Firewire support. -
or perhaps the USR 5699 modem driver needs to be un-installed and then re-installed and you dont have to move the modem into a different slot. DON'T put in any Extra Settings for the USR modem, especially if you are using Netzero as your internet service. redwingtech, try removing the USR modem driver from Add/Remove programs or from Device Manager. Then re-install the modem driver using the correct .INF file that came with the driver pack.

note to Gape: can you include Q240896 opengl32.dll fix in your SP? I read an old post that you may include Q265528 & Q329128 in a future release of the 98se SP. You can forget about that. MS told me (and Petr) that those two patches are no longer available as those hotfixes have been scrapped. I wont bother asking MS again for those as I will be told again they are not available. BulStar, SP20RC1.EXE had KB891711.EXE version 4.10.2222, which caused those blue screen problems. Try installing the latest version of Gape's SP [sP v2.02], which has KB891711.EXE version 4.10.2223. Realize that the MS05-002 Win98 security patch was revised to fix the problems caused by the original Q891711 patch. When I applied the revised Q891711 Win98 patch or Gape's v2.02 98SE pack [NOT SP 2.0 RC1], I no longer had the blue screen problems at startup.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Good thing I AVOIDED buying Win98 FE and waited for a bug fixed version of 98 such as SE because I knew 98fe would have some y2k bugs & other compatibility problems. Heck, my brother bought a used IBM laptop with pre-installed Win98 SE several years ago. 98 FE has anemic firewire support, 98 SE has better firewire support but requires the Q242975 update to fix crucial problems with SE's firewire support. First off KerguelanAvon, copy the SE files from the Win98 folder from the CD to the hard drive. Then run SE setup from the HD, and if it asks for a qualifying product, insert your Win98 FE (not SE) CD, and you should be able to complete the setup AND you should be able to use Win98 SE instead of FE because SE supports more hardware. Well Petr if MS recently told you that hotfixes Q254087, Q265528 & Q329128 are not available, then they are probably not available anymore. So we should give up on asking for those as MS may have already sent them into oblivion. -
Windows Millenium Hotfixes problems
erpdude8 replied to eidenk's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
sure MDGx. though right now I'll give you Q272719 & Q308236. I have to test out the other ME hotfixes I got. -
I also use a USR Winmodem (but model no. 5699B), and encountered a 630 error message a few times. What I did was remove the modem driver, shut down the PC, take out the USR modem and insert it into another PCI expansion slot, turn on the PC and re-installed the drivers. the modem worked flawlessly and I can reconnect after disconnecting. maybe the modem might be inserted into an unreliable slot. try removing the modem and put it into a different slot. Good thing I've been reading my brother's computer repair book on how to change computer parts.
