recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
check this out guys. I came across this page from a search site that talks about the ASN.1 Vulnerability under Windows 98: http://www.webservertalk.com/archive93-2004-2-128285.html On that page somebody there received an email containing a link to obtain the Win98 KB828028 ASN.1 MS04-007 security hotfix. It's NO joke! If you read Microsoft security bulletin MS04-007: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS04-007.mspx the bulletin does NOT even mention Windows 98. nor Windows ME. So you CAN request a non-critical security hotfix for Windows 98/ME from Microsoft support either by email or by phone. wonderful! -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix

Ok. i've downloaded and tested the U891711 patch under Win98se and WinME. Installed OK under Win98se but didn't install under WinME. I get error message when trying to install U891711 under ME so I had to extract the files manually. notified MDGx about it so he should fix that problem easily. Before I installed U891711 I made some changes and corrections to the u891711.inf & u891711.txt files and then installed the files. I've submitted the corrected u891711.inf & u891711.txt files to MDGx. changed the line "Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE Q891711 Patch to "Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE/ME Q891711 Security Patch" in the top section of the u891711.inf file for further clarification. another change I made to the u891711.inf file is the uninstall string from "Unofficial Q891711 Patch (remove only)" to "Unofficial Windows 98/ME Q891711 Patch (remove only)". you really have to specify which version of Windows the U891711 patch will be installed to and uninstalled from. made a minor correction to the u891711.txt file in the "NOTE #2" section, replacing the word "hotfix" with the word "update". Hotfix and update are NOT the same thing. they're different and Microsoft KB891711 is NOT a hotfix; KB891711 is an update, a security update. About the ctpci9x.vxd file, try downloading and installing the Sound Blaster PCI 128 drivers for Windows 9x; get the latest ones from this site: http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/ select Sound Blaster in 1st box, select Others in 2nd box, then select Sound Blaster PCI 128 in 3rd box and click on the Next button. select English as the Language, choose Windows 98 SE as the operating system and choose Driver as the File Type and click the Go button. if you really use Win98 SE or WinME you can even try installing the Sound Blaster PCI 128 WDM drivers [titled " Sound Blaster PCI cards Web Update"]. WDM drivers dont use VXD files, they use SYS driver files. select either "Sound Blaster PCI cards Web Update for users running Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP" or "Sound Blaster PCI128 (Drivers Only - Windows 9x)". These drivers worked good on my relative's Dell PC that has the Creative Ensoniq 1371 Audio card. be sure to remove/un-install either TI891711 or Microsoft KB891711 before installing U891711. looks like U891711 could be a smash hit! -
KB891711 Windows 98 Security Patch finally fixed!
erpdude8 replied to Tihiy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
a newer but unofficial 891711 patch has been created by an anonymous user that is mentioned here: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=58780 it's called U891711. If successful, U891711 can put Microsoft's KB891711 security update for Win98/ME AND Tihiy's TI891711 patch out to pasture. author of U891711 says that TI891711 is "no real replacement since it offers only limited protection" and that 16-bit programs [like the ones from the Windows 3.x days] can "bypass TI891711.DLL completely." so this means that 16bit programs can circumvent the TI891711 fix. another black eye for TI891711. Tihiy might want to visit the above site and test out the U891711 patch. -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
This U891711 patch needs to be revised, MDGx. It will NOT install under WinME (a black eye for ME users). The U891711.TXT file says "Unofficial Windows 98 (FE)/98 SE/ME Q891711 Patch" at the top of the text file but the EXE patch says "Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE Q891711 Patch". Make it install under Win98 FE, SE AND WinME! And edit the title of the U891711.EXE patch to correctly say "Unofficial Windows 98 (FE)/98 SE/ME Q891711 Patch". -

Winamp lite 2.81 is NOT available anymore at the Winamp.com site, eidenk. GET WINAMP LITE 5.11, NOT WINAMP 2.81!!!! Come on, dude! Winamp 2.81 is so old that it is prone to new security threats and v5.11 fixes these new security holes in Winamp. I dont understand why bristols and eidenk want to use a very outdated release of Winamp as I, on the other hand, have no problems with the latest release of Winamp [5.11], with U891711 installed. note to MDGx, you havent mentioned the U891711 patch on your software essentials page, yet as I have checked this noon time. will you list it there? also can you remove Tihiy's TI891711 fix off your page. as the author of the U891711 patch said, TI891711 offers "limited protection" and it is very weak and incompatible with 98fe & ME. -erpdude8 -
Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Get rid of Winamp 2.81 lite, bristols. it's too old. upgrade to the latest version of Winamp lite which is v5.11. Winamp Lite 5.11 fixes a ton of bugs, including security problems found in previous versions of Winamp. I have Winamp v5.11 lite on my 98se & ME machines. I might give the unofficial 891711 win98/me fix a try. do I have to remove microsoft's 891711 patch first before installing the unofficial one, MDGx? -
The reason of this problem is updated USER.EXE and USER32.DLL files. If you want, you can revert back to original version (4.10.2222), but don't forget that newer version (4.10.2231) of these files contain at least 9 different bug-fixes. empty icon buttons on the taskbar also happen when closing a screen saver. Microsoft support article # 280722 discusses about the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/280722 if you install hotfix Q260067 or the latest one [Q291362] or even install the KB891711 security update for Win98 regardless if you have original 98se user.exe/user32.dll files or not, you will have the bug mentioned in MS KB article 280722. you should NOT worry about that bug because microsoft isnt going to fix it and it doesnt cause major problems and doesnt cause crashes. I can live with the bug.

USB/NTKERN Problem after update installation
erpdude8 replied to tcobb64's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I would also delete the canon printer registry entries from Registry editor as well after uninstalling the Canon USB printer drivers 'cause there might be some entries left over that didnt get removed. from now on, I recommend installing any USB devices and its drivers AFTER installing the Win98se service pack. -
latest version of MDAC is 2.8 SP1. latest version of NETFX is 2.0 which came out a few days ago. will these be included in your next release of your USP? btw - is Win2k hotfix KB886765 included in your USPs? i've been wondering if the files from the KB886765 hotfix are safe to use under Win2000 or if that hotfix cause problems under Win2000. KB886765 hotfix mentioned in support article 886765: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886765

recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
not really, I said if in my previous post. you could try asking again. I might try asking MS as well later in the year. yeah, I take it back. when certain Win98/ME hotfixes are not available, MS means they are not available anymore. So you can crosss hotfixes Q254087, Q265528 and Q329128 off your list as these hotfixes have been tossed into the abyss. if you try to ask for these hotfixes now, MS will either give you a cryptic response or tell you they're not available. you could try calling MS tech support by phone, then give you email address to them & request those three hotfixes; though it's a major longshot now. I have bookmarked this Microsoft support page on a list of hotfixes for "desktop" operating systems: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...ic_Existing.asp this page takes a while to load using dialup because the list is very long. -
like with the unofficial windows 98se service pack I commented on a different part of the MSFN.org forum site, the USP 5.0 for Win2k isnt for every Win2000 user out there. but it is sure a big help for many home users who still use Win2000. business users may want to steer clear of USP 5.0 if they feel that way.

Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 (KB891861)
erpdude8 replied to Gurgelmeyer's topic in Hotstream
ok. thanks. the_guy is right. Media Player 10 doesnt run under non-XP versions of Windows, especially Win2000. however, you could try using the WMP 9 files that are included in XP SP2. almost all of them should work under W2K. XP SP2 has WMP9 build 3250, while the WMP9 player offered at the Microsoft web site is WMP9 build 2980. -
Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 (KB891861)
erpdude8 replied to Gurgelmeyer's topic in Hotstream
in case you guys haven't noticed, the Windows 2000 SP4 Update Rollup 1 [KB891861] was revised on Sept. 13, 2005 to fix major problems with the original release. see microsoft KB article 891861 about the revised UR1 for Win2k SP4: http://support.microsoft.com/KB/891861/ which version of MS Win2k URP1 did you include in your USPs, Gurgelmeyer? the original one that was released on June 28, 2005 or the one that was revised on Sept. 13, 2005. Win2000 users who have applied the original Win2k SP4 URP1 should download and install "V2" (the revised version) of the URP1. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
all right i found it. I wonder MDGx, if you want to include the HTML Help files from the XP SP2 KB896358 patch and create an unofficial HTML Help 5.20.3790.2453 patch for Win98/ME/NT4. I've extracted the "SP2QFE" versions of the HTML Help files from the XP SP2 KB896358 patch, then installed them on the Win98 & WinME computers. they worked fine. they're actually a little newer than the HTML Help files found in the Win98, ME & 2000 versions of the KB896358 patches. -
NO MDGX!! OLE update 2.40.4526 does NOT BREAK HTML Help Engine!!!! It breaks WinME Help and Support Center, NOT HTML Help. In fact, HTML Help [hh.exe] in ME ran fine with the ole 2.40.4526 update. It's Help and Support [helpctr.exe] that chokes when launched if OLE automation v2.40.4526 update is installed under WinME. try not to confuse the two.

USB/NTKERN Problem after update installation
erpdude8 replied to tcobb64's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
what specific model of the Canon USB printer are u using? try checking the Canon support site to see if they have a solution when dealing with ntkern.vxd problem. also, where exactly do you see the yellow exclamation marker in device manager. and what version of the unofficial 98se service pack did you install on your computer. I am currently using unofficial 98se SP v2.02. -
what kind of computer are u using, yoram? and what options did you select when you installed the 98se SP2 pack. also, state what version of SP2 did you install. latest is v2.02.

IE 6.0 SP1 cannot open Https pages
erpdude8 replied to lilliccu's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
go job, lilliccu. I think the Unofficial Win98SE pack v2.0.1 Italian edition needs to be revised to include the newer Crypt32.dll file. btw - version 5.131.1880.14 of the crypt32.dll file [uS English] is included in the english WinNT4 KB835732 [MS04-011] security patch. if you need to obtain that specific version of that file but in Italian, download the Italian version of the NT4 KB835732 patch from the Microsoft site. then extract the crypt32.dll file from the NT4 KB835732 italian patch. -
when I installed version 2.40.4526 of the asycfilt.dll, oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll and stdole2.tlb files under my neighbor's Win98se computer (which is NOT connected to the internet and with few programs), things seem to be ok. nothing was wrong with it. but since I see some people suffering from version 2.40.4526 of the OLE Automation files and have made posts here in this forum, I've decided to revert back to the previous version which is v2.40.4522. I may have to ask MDGx to revise his OLE automation pack again to revert back to version 2.40.4522 of ALL those OLE automation files for Windows 95, 98, ME & NT4. no more using any of the files from KB886765 as they should be used under Win2000 only.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Hi MDGX, I suppose it is too soon to sent this alpha version to the general public. I need more test results before this. Too many files are updated, not the same as in SE package. Petr Roger that. Yes AND No! Yes in the sense that the alpha version of your pack shouldnt be widely available but to post your 98fe pack at the Rapishare.de site was a POOR choice. A TERRIBLE MISTAKE! It is barely impossible to obtain your 98fe pack with a free Rapidshare account with a dialup connection and I and some other people have had a very difficult time downloading the whole pack several times because of the size of the download. I could never complete the download of the 98fe pack which is super frustrating! very infuriating!!! THAT'S IT! I now recommend 98fe users to avoid getting the alpha version of the 98fe pack from Rapidshare until an actual BETA [NOT an ALPHA] of the Windows 98 Standard Edition pack comes out AND the pack is posted at a different site OTHER than Rapidshare. NEVER post large downloads at Rapidshare unless users are using a fast broadband connection, not a slow dialup connection!!! -
We will let the creator of the 98se2me.exe pack, MDGx, answer your questions. I will say that installing file manually is not a good idea since some .DLL, .EXE and some system files are in use by Windows and you will not be able to overwrite them and you must go into MS-DOS mode to overwrite some of the system files that are in use by the operating system. wait for a response from MDGx.

your welcome, RedwingTech. I can assume you are really using the 5699 [model # 005699-00] and neither 5699A nor 5699B. The 5699 modem drivers are more than 5 1/2 years old and the modem I think may not be compatible with Win98 and higher versions of Windows as I've checked the 5699 modem downloads page. The 5699 drivers are only for Win95 & NT4. I think you should dump that 5699 modem (since it is too old & maybe past its prime) and get the one I have [5699B] which should be fully compatible with the 98SE SP2 pack and the latest drivers are more than a year old. My longtime friend has a US Robotics 56k modem [model no, 5660] which is fully compatible with Win98se, 2000, ME & XP and the 5660 modem drivers are WHQL logo'ed (aka. digitially signed) by Microsoft. I bought the US Robotics 5699b modem at a computer electronics store in the summer of 2004. you should buy a newer USR modem than the one you have since newer 56k modems may be fully V.92 compliant. -erpdude8

NOT under Windows ME. Even with those specific versions of those four files mentioned, there were problems with the Help and Support Center feature not working correctly as I get a "Cannot Display Page" error and the Help & Support Center buttons wont work. Had to use version 2.40.4522 of ALL the four files mentioned to get Help & Support Center in WinME to function correctly. revert back to version 2.40.4522 of those four OLE Automation files if using Win95, 98, ME or NT4 and forget about using 2.40.4526 of those files as the files from Q886765 are meant only for Win2000 and work properly under Win2000 only.
-
about the OLE Automation 2.40.4526 files from the Win2000 KB886765 hotfix. DONT include them in the 98se SP as they can break IE scripts & activeX controls. stick with version 2.40.4522 of the asycfilt.dll, oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll and stdole2.tlb files.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
these updates were posted late Wednesday morning at Windows Update [for those living on the West Coast in the Pacific Time region]; so I got these security updates at WU close to noontime Wednesday. there's also a Cumulative Security update for IE 5.5 SP2 [KB896688] for Windows ME. the KB904706 DirectX updates can install under Windows 98 & ME. there are only 2 versions, one specifc for DirectX 8.x and the other for DirectX 9.0/9.0a/9.0b/9.0c. I believe you can also install them under Win98 FE as long as either DirectX 8 or 9 is installed. ok PsycoUnc I'll try to look for the info about oleaut32.dll 2.40.4526 breaking IE scripts.
