Windows Millenium Hotfixes problems
erpdude8 replied to eidenk's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Oh eidenk I have some WinME hotfixes than those you've mentioned. These are the ones I have: Q252183, Q272719, Q296883, Q274594, Q296883, Q308236 & Q316638 let me know if you need them as I will ask Microsoft support for more WinME hotfixes. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Note that the IE Cumulative Update [896727] for IE 5.5 SP2 will normally REFUSE to install under non-WinME systems. If you are using other versions of Windows such as 98, NT4 w/ SP6, or even 2000 w/ SP4 AND have IE 5.5 SP2 installed, you'll have to manually extract the files inside the patch, then run the command "ieupdate.exe Q896727" to install the files AND you MUST reboot after the files are installed, even if the patch doesn't tell you to reboot. note to MDGx: while I was away, I have asked for and obtained the msconfig.exe 4.90.3001 Q272719 WinME patch from Microsoft support. let me know if you need it and I'll be glad to send it to you after I test out the patch. I really dont mind if W98/ME users use either IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6.0 SP1. I install IE5.5 SP2 on my relative's old (and ancient) pentium 1 pc (75mhz cpu w/ 32mb RAM) 'cause it can't handle IE6.0 SP1 effectively. I do, however, use IE 6.0 SP1 on my WinME machine, a pentium 3 (800 mhz) with 256mb RAM. -

hey Petr. I'm back from my long break. Have you tried asking Microsoft for these 3 patches for Win98: Q254087 vmm.vxd 4.10.2000 Q265528 vnetbios.vxd 4.10.2223 Q329128 ndis.vxd 4.10.2001 Q329128 pppmac.vxd 4.10.2003 Q329128 vip.386 4.10.2004 Also, can your 98FE SP be posted at Softpedia.com, Petr? i don't like getting it at that rapidshare.de site. -erpdude8 -
Long time no see, guys! The TSHOOT.OCX registry fix is not necessary. It's only required if you apply IE update 824145 or higher AND you are using IE 5.01 SP2, IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6.0 SP1 under Win98. And since Gape's SP doesn't include IE updates from none of the IE versions I mentioned, the tshoot.ocx registry fix is useless. The HTML Help v1.4 applet requires IE 5.x or IE 6.x. Since the Win98 KB896358 HTML Help patch normally installs under IE 6 SP1, ask me how you can force the KB896358 patch to install under IE 5.5 SP2 or even under IE 5.01 SP2.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
No, as I already mentioned, this patch test the IE version and will install for IE 5.01 SP3 too. This is Microsoft engineer's intention. Petr <{POST_SNAPBACK}> my bad. I stand corrected. You & MDGx were right on. The 3 patches MDGx mentioned ARE exactly the same; thus it can work with IE 5.01 SP3. Though in the future new IE patches made after July 2005 will no longer install under IE 5.01 SP3 and WILL require SP4. btw- MDGx, where did u modify the voltrack.vxd file to make it 4.10.2000? if you edited it in a hex editor it isnt enough. The voltrack.vxd file from your unofficial Win98 voltrack.vxd fix will be 4.10.2000 in Win9x/NT4 Explorer shell only BUT QFECheck will still report it as v4.10.0.1999!! And when I viewed the voltrack.vxd file in WinME's Explorer it says 4.10.0.1999 & when I clicked on the File Version Description item in the Version tab of the file's properties, it says 4.10.2000. You really need to use a Visual Basic Editor [VBE] or a special editor that can read and properly modify VXD files instead of using a hex editor. and Petr, I have the Q192117 mstcp.dll Win98 patch. -
The ghost icon buttons on taskbar is similar to the "screen saver" icon on taskbar problem mentioned in Microsoft support article 280722: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/280722 If you have user.exe & user32.dll version 4.10.2227 or higher (latest is Q291362 which has 4.10.2231) OR if you install the KB891711 security update for Win98, you may encounter those ghost icons on the taskbar. This is NOT, I repeat, NOT a major problem with Win98se as I just click on those phantom icons to elliminate them and Win98se will work fine. the phantom icons are just a minor bug, so dont worry about them. A permanent solution (and I DONT recommend it) is to uninstall the KB891711 security patch and use version 4.10.2226 or earlier of the user.exe and user32.dll files.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
The IE 5.01/Win2000 KB903235 patch should be listed as MS IE 5.01 SP4/Windows 2000 SP4 patch, MDGx. Microsoft noted in MS security bulletin MS05-037 that Microsoft ended extended security support for IE 5.01 SP3/Win2000 SP3 on June 30, 2005 in the FAQ section. The IE 903235 patch and future IE patches will no longer be supported under Win2000 SP3/IE5.01 SP3 systems after 6/30/2005. The patches only install from IE 5.01 SP4 (not SP3) to IE 6 SP1. -
And I thought I was the only one who never reformats or installs anew. My original Win95 [gradually upgraded 1 OS at a time all the way up to ME and then "downgraded" back to 98SE] partition will be 10 years old this August [happy birthday!]. That is because [if any of you know or recall] Windows 95 retail first edition was released August 15 1995, and I was in line at the store when it opened that AM. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I thought Windows 95 was released to the public in retail boxes on August 24, 1995 as noted in some of my old PC Computing magazines I've been keeping over the years. i hardly had to do any re-install of Windows whether it's Win95, 98 or ME since I usually run Scandisk & Defrag to fix/optimize my machines. Also when performing backups of any kind be sure to backup your important computer files to reliable backup media like Iomega Jaz disks or even cd-rewritable discs (CDRWs) if anyone uses a cd burner.

My bad then. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It is incorrectly written in MS05-037. Petr <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually, IE 5.01 SP3 from Win2k SP3 is no longer supported. Microsoft ended extended security support for IE 5.01 SP3/Win2000 SP3 on june 30, 2005. expand the Frequently Asked Questions related to this security update section in security bulletin MS05-037. miko is right on about this critical patch being available for 98se; search for 903235 at the Windows Update Catalog site & select either Win98 or WinME as the operating system and you should find it there.

erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I have just gotten the Q192117 mstcp.dll hotfix from Microsoft though it took 2 tries. First time I tried asking, I got a less than intelligent response from a support rep. that Win98 support has been retired. So I asked again and then a different support rep gave me the patch. Email me Petr and I'll be able to give it to you later today. -
man, I thought this issue was answered already a long time ago. See this topic about NTFS support under Win98se & WinME: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=39573 just use any third party tool to access NTFS volumes under Win9xME systems, that's all. don't ask for any "integrated" ntfs support for 9x systems as that will never happen since 98/me are barely on life support & 95 is totally dead.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Actually that is the English VOLTRACK.VXD from 98SE [original 4.10.1998] patched to ver 4.10.1999 and probably fixed the same way the Japanese one is. [?]These are only speculations, I'm waiting for this person to send more details. What's important is that the way it is VOLTRACK.VXD locked up 3 computers I tried it on with a "Windows protection error". BTW: I've tested further VOLTRACK.VXD 4.90.3000 from WinME CD, but it doesn't work correctly, it doesn't read most of the CDs or DVDs I've tested in the 2 drives [1 CD-RW + 1 DVD-RW] installed in my PC. Bummer. ;-( <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The unofficial Voltrack.vxd fix for English Win98/98se is NOT the same fix as the Q234697 patch, which contains v4.10.1999 of diskvsd.vxd & voltrack.vxd files for Japanese-language version of Windows 98 Standard edition. I would suggest revising the unofficial Win98 voltrack.vxd fix to become Unofficial voltrack.vxd 4.10.2000 English Win98 fix to avoid file version confusion with the japanese Q234697 Win98 voltrack.vxd v4.10.1999 fix. The voltrack.vxd fix from Q234697 is far different from the unofficial Q249824 voltrack.vxd Win98 fix, meaning Q234697 does NOT contain Q249824 fix AND vice-versa. -
137GB limit - ESDI_506.PDR and other limits
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
come on guys. cut Rudolph Loew some slack. I havent seen anything wrong for what he did or what he was trying to do. hey if Mr. Loew's software solution to the 137gb+ problems requires paying for his software so be it. seriously, BIOS is both the hardware (the chip mounted on the motherboard) and the software (the programs stored on the chip). You need a BIOS that is dated September 2002 or later to use 137Gb & bigger hard drives, as noted at the LancsIT.com site I bookmarked. This applies to any computer, whether it's a desktop, workstation, server or even a laptop. Version 2.30 of Intel Application Accelerator is not compatible with laptop/notebook computers. Obtain version 2.22 of IAA if using a laptop computer here: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...*%20Me〈=eng -

This is the file from http://ftp.mdgx.com/files/Q242941.EXE . Do you have any other? Petr <{POST_SNAPBACK}> nope. I'm not going to try to ask MS for the Win98 version of Q242941. sybesma and I were "led in circles" by MS support earlier this year when getting Q242941 but it was for Win95 systems and not for Win98. weird that MS article Q242941 mentions v4.10.2222 of serenum.vxd fix for ALL Win95/98 systems (the date mentioned there is 9/08/1999 which is wrong). Actual patch has date of 4/23/1999. not really, I said if in my previous post. you could try asking again. I might try asking MS as well later in the year. -
well if a vast majority of 98se machines can't handle WinME's ndis.vxd file because of the problems it can cause, then dont use it. W98se users are better off using the ndis.vxd file from the Q270063 patch and should avoid using the ndis.vxd file from ME.

Here are some other sites with some info on 137Gb HDs I've found by searching from Yahoo: FAQ on Western Digital Hard Drives: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/directron/faqwd.html LancIT.com Laptop Guide page on hard drives: http://www.lancsit.com/laptop/ch09lev1sec5.html Also, check out the 48bitLBA.com FAQ page: http://www.48bitlba.com/faq.htm and PCWorld.com's Hardware Tips : Plan Ahead to Keep Your Big Hard Drive Purring http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,120355,00.asp there are both hardware and software solutions on overcoming the 137GB barrier. -

Here's a nice FAQ page from the Hitachi Global Storage Technologies web site on 137Gb hard drives: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/hddfaqs.htm The faq does mention Intel Application Accelerator [iAA]. IAA can only work with Intel Pentium 3 or Pentium 4 CPUs with Intel 82801AA, 82801AB, 82801BA or 82801DB Controllers as noted in its Readme.txt file. If your system is not using any ONE of the four Intel controllers, then IAA will not work, nor will it get installed. Latest version is 2.3. Hasn't been updated for a few years. The only hotfixes I'll be requesting from this point on will be WinME hotfixes since I mostly use WinME. btw, Petr, can you include Q242941 serenum.vxd fix in your 98 standard ed. SP? believe it or not it has serenum.vxd 4.10.2222 dated 4/23/1999, the same file included in 98 SE. -

BIOS is BOTH hardware & software. Realize that there are BIOS chips that CANT be upgraded via a flash software, especially in computers made before 1995. Only way to "update" the BIOS in non-flash BIOS chips is to replace the BIOS chip. Yes, the ESDI_506.PDR patch is needed by itself if using PCs made in 2001 and later. BUT what about PCs made in 2000 and earlier? HA! that's what I'm driving at! You just cant use those 137Gb drives under very old PCs because both the BIOS & IDE controllers in pre-2001 era can't properly handle very large hard drives. see it IS both a hardware & software problem. ok enough of that. Try asking for the Q230791, Q254087, Q265528 & Q329128 hotfixes sometime in July, Petr. if they're not available then, try again in August or September. And if MS tells you they are not available by the end of 2005 then there's a chance they're likely gone. -

Q896358, Q888113, Q835732 patches require IE 5 or better. Those patches break IE 4.x. I know for sure if you run the Win98 Q896358 & Q888113 updates, they may still not work unless you are using Win98 + IE6 SP1. If using Win98, but using IE6, IE 5.5 SP2 or less, those patches refuse to install. like to see ie4.01 sp2 or even ie5.x or 6.x integrated in Petr's 98 FE SP and Gape's 98 SE SP someday. sure the WinXP SP2 pack is massive (full sp2 pack is 280 Mb in size) but contains IE6 SP2, DX9.0c, MSI 3.0, WMP9, MDAC 2.8 SP1 & other addons included in one gigantic pack. DSClient Q323455 Win98 update addresses many or even all the issues mentioned in MS article 283261. The older version of DSClient (included in Win2000 CDs) have the problems mentioned in article 283261. -

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME, MONEY & ENERGY TRYING TO ACTUALLY SUE MICROSOFT! ...OR YOU'LL END UP WITH EVEN MORE MISERY!!! -------- The problem with Win9xME systems not supporting very large HDs beyond 137Gb is both a SOFTWARE AND A HARDWARE PROBLEM! In order for the 400Gb HD to work on a PC, you'll need a PC made in 2004 or later, and a BIOS from 2004 or later and most likely a more recent version of Windows. So just patching the HD problem with a hotfix is just isn't good enough. -
oh yeah you've said it Rhelic! XP SP2 worked fine on my brother's desktop and laptop machines; both using XP home edition. the laptop ran better with sp2. plus, I've updated all the apps on both PCs that are xp sp2 compatible. forget it! i'm not going to bother using the freakin' WindizUpdate site. better off downloading & saving updates from Microsoft download center. The V5 & V6 Windows Update sites do support resuming downloads though the V5/V6 Windows Update pages only work with Win2000, XP & 2003. done posting on this thread.

absolutely, Petr. The desk.cpl file from the Q258680 patch works fine under 98fe. I even put it on my WinME system and it worked w/out any problems. -
Old Western Digital Caviar HD? how big is the hard drive? If it is really compressed, use DriveSpace to UNcompress it first. You might have to remove the SP before uncompressing the drive. >"the CD is a CDRW smart and friendly" I dont understand this. do you mean CD drive or CDRW drive? what kind of CDRW drive do you have? I'd rather suggest using Device Manager from the System control panel applet to view problematic devices in Windows.

this isn't enough info to help you, mwg. What kind of IBM machine are u using? try visiting the IBM support site and try to find some solutions to your problems there first.
