98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Because of different CRYPT32.DLL builds:- Q329115 = 5.131.2133.6 = newer [but older date 9-12-2002] - Q835732 = 5.131.1880.14 = older [but newer date 1-23-2004] I have used the newer build. P.S.: Have you tested this new CRYPT9X.EXE on your 9x computer(s)? Please let me know if it doesn't work ok. Thanks. I think that 5.131.1880.xx are for Windows 98 and WinNT and 5.131.2133.xx version is for Windows ME. 5.131.1880.14 is much newer build with fixes not implemented in 5.131.2133.6 and therefore I'd recommend this newer fix for Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE, and older 5.131.2133.6 for Windows ME because according to erpdude8 posts there is no Q835732 crypt32.dll file that would work on Windows Me. Sometimes the file date is modified and does not reflect the real date when it was built, but for PE executables you can find the build date/time in the PE header and for these files it is the same as file date- Petr I've made a CRYPT9X patch of my own that has the latest crypt32 files for Win98, plus the latest msasn1.dll file from NT4 835732 patch. The CRYPT9X.EXE file should only be used under Win95/98 and NOT under ME. Petr, I wonder if you would mind emailing Czech MS support for Hotfix 828028 for Windows ME. Looks like they seem to be more intelligent than the ones from the english MS email support address and know more of the 828028 hotfixes for win98/me. thanks for the email you sent me. -
ok. I recently updated the Nero software I had [version 6.3.1.25] to version 6.6.1.4 (released on Jan. 31, 2006) and this new release of Nero 6.6 has Nero CD-DVD Speed v4.11, DriveSpeed v3.06 and Nero InfoTool v3.07. these newer versions of the Nero Toolkit programs are not available at the CD Speed 2000 web site. I will email Erik Deppe to see if he can make these newer versions of these tools available as standalone downloads at the CD Speed 2000 site.

maybe. we'll have to wait and see. Microsoft will end support of Win98, 98se and ME on june 30, 2006 as noted at this page: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean1 do you use Windows 98 SE, PROBLEMCHYLD?

Unofficial update - new version - crashed system!
erpdude8 replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Follow-up on my last post on Intel Application Accelerator and Nero 6.x software: I even updated the Nero software from v6.3.1.25 to v6.6.1.4 (latest release of Nero 6.6 posted 1-31-2006) and testing it with IAA v2.3. Still getting those "Unspecified target error" messages (this time under Nero 6.6) after reformatting a cd-rw disc and/or sometimes while burning a cd-r/cd-rw disc. Good thing I've tested IAA & Nero 6.x software with the previous version of IAA [v2.22]. Version 2.22 seems to get along with Nero 6.x software and does NOT cause Unspecified Target Error messages. Looks like IAA 2.3 does not get along with Nero 6 [versions 6.0 to 6.6] and IAA 2.22 is the last version supported under laptop/notebook computers. IAA 2.22 may seem a little less buggy than IAA 2.3. Wonder if version 2.22 of Intel Application Accelerator drivers can support 48-bit LBA extensions and support 137Gb+ hard drives. So I dumped the IAA 2.3 drivers and will use IAA 2.22 drivers on my WinME system instead since it does not give Nero 6.x fits. Version 2.2.0.2126 of the intelata.mpd & intelvsd.vxd driver files can be used on both desktop and laptop PCs with barely no problems. Version 2.3.0.2160 of the intelata.mpd & intelvsd.vxd driver files should only be used on desktop PCs w/out Nero 6.x software and should NOT be used on any laptop/notebook computers as they can cause undesirable side effects on laptops. If you're going to use IAA on laptop PCs, use version 2.22 and avoid v2.3. BTW/FYI: Intel Application Accelerator replaces/supersedes the Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver Software. -

emarkay, you mus DISABLE your firewall software before installing any Windows Updates and the Win98se SP. the firewall software may interfere with the update process and screw things up. Turn off ALL antivirus and firewall software before installing the Win98 update or Win98se service pack. Side effects of using the IAA drivers Intelata.mpd and Intelvsd.vxd and having Nero 6.x installed is that Nero 6.x causes "Unspecified target error" messages on my WinME computer when reformatting a CD-Rewritable disc. After that error message appeared, the formatting process was botched. I kept on pressing the Eject button on my CD-burner but to no avail. Had to restart the computer to make the CD-RW drive work properly again. I did not have this problem with Nero 5.5.10.56. I even took out the cd-burner drive and put in a different one (an HP cd-writer kind) and using IAA and Nero 6 and I STILL got the "Unspecified target error" message when reformatting a cd-rw disc. So it is NOT the CD-burner that is the problem. It could a bug in Nero 6.x or a bug with the IAA driver. I will remove the IAA drivers and revert back to the generic Microsoft WinME ATA drivers. The MS ata drivers work just fine with Nero 6.x. Or maybe I should remove the Nero 6.x software I have on my computer [v6.3.1.25] and revert back to Nero 5.5.10.56 which worked fine with the IAA drivers. Maybe this problem has been resolved in Nero 7. -

Good find. The hidden INF files inside the IAA 2.3 pack are named W98_PIIX [for Win98 systems], WME_PIIX [for WinME systems] and W2K_PIIX [for Win2k/XP systems]. Use Snoopy81's WinPack tool to open the data1.cab or data2.cab files inside the IAA 2.3 pack (you'll need to extract those .cab files first by viewing iaa23_enu.exe in Winzip). You can get the Winpack utility here: http://snoopy81.ifrance.com/snoopy81/en/winpack.htm then you can extract the W98_PIIX, WME_PIIX or W2K_PIIX file and then rename any one of them as the intelata.inf file. Also bundled in the IAA 2.3 package are the Q274370 Cdvsd.vxd hotfixes for Win98 & WinME. Drawbacks? yes. Installing IAA 2.3 on supported or unsupported systems will rename and disable the SMARTVSD.VXD driver (on Win98/ME PCs) as this file causes conflicts with IAA. Thanks MDGx. Too bad Intel Application Accelerator does not work at all under Win95. It will work under NT4 BUT with SP6a installed. -
your welcome, timeless I have sent an email to wiSHmaKeR several days ago and have not gotten a response from him. maybe not yet. I'll try sending him a personal IM.

Unofficial update - new version - crashed system!

Prime95 having errors usually means that the processor (not RAM) is unstable. The motherboard may not be giving the processor chip enough Vcore. where can I get the Prime95 program, azagahl & RJARRRPCGP? of course, service packs of any kind whether official or unofficial aren't perfect. when I first installed XP SP2 on my brother's xp laptop, it hosed the Smart Link modem drivers and the modem didnt work properly. Smart Link had to post up a newer modem driver a few months after SP2 was released to fix the problem. even the Win2000 SP4 pack can cause some problems on certain Win2k machines. I even installed the unofficial Win98se SP on an old Pentium 1 PC and on a Pentium 3 PC and the SP worked fine on both computers I've tested. Maybe the pack is incompatible with emarkay's laptop computer. I strongly agree with PsycoUnc about Norton software. DUMP IT ASAP! Norton is a major resource hog and should NOT be used on slow machines. even on fast PCs, Norton can drag performance down unless you have installed the fastest CPU available and you have at least a gig of RAM installed. use an alternative program for norton. -

AND I am NOT going to change my opinion on this until the WinME kb828028 msasn1.dll hotfix has been obtained (either by Petr, me or someone else) from MS. so far, Petr has not responded to this yet. ...getting even MORE suspicious on how Petr got the Win98 KB828028 patch. I no longer believe him when he emailed me a few weeks ago saying he got this patch with "no problems" from MS. I can only speculate he got it by other means. -
Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Since it has been more than 6 months since last alpha release of unofficial Win98 Gold SP2, this project should be put on hold as nobody so far wants to update it [plus there were a lot of new updates that were made since last alpha that are not included]. right now the focus is more on the unofficial Win98 SE SP and unofficial WinME SP. however, this thread will still be open for comments, questions & suggestions. -
you way want to take a few more days off and get well before posting up the ME pack. be sure to add the Start.exe and Nircmd.exe files into the pack as these are required for shutting down system restore, sfp & vxdmon before the installation of files from the ME pack. And when removing/un-installing the ME pack, the Nircmd file must ALSO be used to shutdown sys-restore/SFP before removal of the ME pack so that SFP wont interfere with un-install. MDGx has posted a newer ME912919 patch that I've downloaded and tested. This one worked to perfection as previous revisions to ME912919 had problems.

Add functions to Windows 95 shell32.dll
erpdude8 replied to lleoliveira's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
RJARRRPCGP is right on. Programs like Win98 Wordpad and the Spider Solitaire game (from Plus!98 and the newer one listed here: http://www.3feetunder.com/files/winme_spider_setup.exe These programs are not compatible with Win95 shell32.dll and generate those "Linked to missing export SHELL32.DLL" error messages. -

You might be interested in installing the Active Desktop Update. It gives you the whole Windows 98 style shell... Installing Active Desktop Update on Windows 95 http://www.oldfiles.org.uk/lightspeed/Active_Desktop.html Also, this page has lots of notes on the whole thing including all the ways you should (and shouldn't) install it... http://wymette.home.att.net/programs/IEDeskUp.txt I have an even better way of installing the IE Active Desktop Update under Windows 95 listed at my Computer Tips for Windows page: http://erpman1.tripod.com/comptips.html (scroll down to near the bottom of the page; I've even included a tip of creating a [.BAT] batch file that will install the desktop update when IE 5.x is already installed) Note that after installing the IE Desktop Update with IE 5.x setup you will NOT see the "Show File Attributes In Detail View" option in the Folder Options {View} tab dialog box. You must add the necessary registry entries to add the File Attributes setting after you install the IE Desktop Update. -

erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
ok MDGx. I have obtained the newer ME912919.EXE patch. It properly shut down SFP, system restore and Vxdmon and installed the updated GDI files after waiting for Nircmd to finish shutting down SFP/system restore. It no longer prompted the "Windows has found and repaired inconsistencies..." message after restarting the ME machine BUT the "You must restart the computer..." message popped up after reboot. And when I restarted the computer the second, third, fourth times, the Restart Computer message kept on popping up. And I noticed the wininit.ini file was still there in the Windows folder. I had to delete the wininit.ini file manually after the second or third time I rebooted when I ran ME912919.EXE again. Hopefully this will be fixed in V4 of ME912919. Also, you may want to create a separate Unofficial HTML Help 5.20.3790.2453 patch just for WinME that will include the NIRCMD file (and call it HHUPDME.EXE). Ditto for Unofficial OLE Automation 2.40.4526 Update for WinME with the inclusion of NIRCMD file (and call that one OLEUPME.EXE). -
I've conducted even more further testing with the 95NP_181205.exe & 95osrNP_181205.exe notepad patches for all versions of Win95. BOTH of them requiring version 4.72.xxxx of the comdlg32.dll and shell32.dll files from Win98 in order for them to really work. Tested each one on a Win95 original and Win95 OSR2 systems. 95osrNP_181205.exe worked as expected in patching original Notepad.exe file dated 8/24/1996 in Win95 OSR2. 95NP_181205.exe did NOT work at all even though original Notepad.exe file dated 7/11/1995 in Win95 original/osr1 was installed AND was using v4.72 of comdlg32.dll file and v4.72 of shell32.dll file after installing IE4.01 SP1 w/ IE Desktop Update. Kept on saying "Sorry this file cannot be patched!" message. Looks like 95NP_181205.exe will need to be re-worked to patch the original Notepad file under Win95 original.

mou-haha. buttercup. good one, timeless. time to get back to the topic about the ME service pack. note to the_guy: be sure to add the Dcom Config tools CISCNFG.EXE & DCOMCNFG.EXE onto the ME pack as well.
-
understandable Kiki (even though we're going a little off topic from WinME SP). First of all there are several versions of Win95; the original, OSR1 [Win95 orig. + SP1], OSR2, OSR2.1 [win95 sr2 + usb supplement], and OSR2.5. There is an official service pack for the original release of Win95 posted at this Microsoft site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloa...ck1/Default.asp so there is no need to make an unofficial win95 SP for the original & osr1 versions. And there are NO win95 OSR2 SPs of any kind since nobody is willing to make one and all support for all editions of Win95 have been ceased several years ago.
-
Another thing to add is the newer U891711 patch revised 1/5/2006 which fixes a "GlobalMemory" problem that caused performance drops in some computers. please post up the link to the latest ME pack when you are ready, the_guy. latest release of ME pack isnt quite ready yet. contact the_guy, send him an email and ask him when it will be ready. Uh, which power puff girl are you, suta? do you even watch that show?

what exact kind of USB Printer are you installing almawardi. please mention what type of printer you use under Win98 SE. also, read the instruction manual carefully on how to install the USB Printer. usually you have to install the usb printer drivers first before connecting the printer to a USB port. VERY IMPORTANT to read the printer manual before operating with the printer.

Unofficial update - new version - crashed system!
erpdude8 replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
maybe not. No, this is not correct. The 137GB limit relates tho the physical disk size, not to partition size. The problem is with physical disk addressing, the ESDI_506.PDR uses 28-bit addressing of sectors (512 bytes each), so the maximum addressable sector number is 2^28-1 = 268435455 . If you try to address sector number 268435456, you will read or write sector 0 instead. Maximum partition size in Windows 98 SE is 2048GiB (2,2TB), just Windows Scandisk and Defrag will not work with partition size bigger than 137 GB because of the memory allocation problem. Petr since your system uses intel 810 chipsets, emarkay, try installing the Intel Application Accelerator v2.3 [iAA] driver from Intel download site: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...18&submit=Go%21 The IAA driver can read 137 Gb and bigger hard drives under Win98se/ME and is compatible with intel 810 chipsets. -
Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
The erpdude says a resounding YES to Registration Wizard Update. link to directly download the Windows 98 Registration Wizard Update from the Windows Update site: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...05E3D70F389.cab The Registration Wizard Update fix is already included in Win98 SE and WinME as I looked in the following Registry Key and Registry Values in REGEDIT: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{b59c7da0-daea-11d2-83c7-0000f8051539} @="Registration wizard update" "IsInstalled"=dword:00000001 "Locale"="EN" "Version"="4,10,2150" The Euro Conversion tool should be left out. wasnt included in Gape's 98se pack and the_guy's ME pack and should also not be included in 98FE Gold SP2. Critical Update Notification v4.0 tool should also be excluded as it always loads at startup and checks for critical win98 updates frequently; very annoying for dial-up users but may be useful for broadband users. The Registration Wizard Update [crwid.exe] removes a hardware ID registry entry that might have gotten transmitted to Microsoft when registering Windows 98 Gold. -

The Personal MS Email addresses sybesma mentioned (such as Corey's, Kathy's and Erik's email address) are no longer working anymore. I either get no response from them at all or get my message bounced right back to me with a failure notice. So do NOT use them anymore as they may no longer be around. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
unfortunately, the WinME install instructions ARE STILL NEEDED as the revised ME912919.EXE file that included the Nircmd.exe file to kill SFP, System restore, Vxdmon etc., DID NOT WORK properly under my WinME computer SAD! it still generated that "Windows detected and repaired inconsistencies..." error message after reloading WinME & after installing ME912919 w/ Nircmd.exe file. I think the patch installed the updated GDI files to soon (or should I say "too quickly") before Nircmd had a chance to finish. The patch should WAIT until Nircmd finishes shutting down, SFP, system restore & Vxdmon and THEN install the updated files. AND note that the WININIT.LOG file is created AFTER rebooting & reloading WinME desktop, NOT right after installing the ME912919 patch. MDGx told me it worked on a clean ME OS on his test machine. But it's a completely different story on my WinME computer and on my relative's WinME computer, both of which are slower than the one MDGx has. Looks like ME912919 doesnt work well on slow computers. I have created .INF files that fix the "T2EMBED.DLL Fix Installer Error" problems under Win98 & ME. I have also created an .INF file that fix the "NWNP32.DLL Fix Installer Error" problem after installing the IPF Error Nwnp32.dll fix under Win95 osr2 and Win98 FE/Gold. I have sent these .INF files to MDGx and should post up these fixes as soon as possible. MDGx should also mention that the Nwnp32.dll FIX requires either MS Client for Netware Networks or Novell Netware v3.x/4.x Client to be installed in order for the Nwnp32.dll patch to really work & install the updated file. -
I have done even more further testing of the win95 patches and they BOTH need version 4.72 of both the comdlg32.dll AND shell32.dll file. To install v4.72 of shell32.dll file, install IE 4.01 SP1 or higher and install the IE Desktop Update for Win95. The win95 notepad patches will still NOT work when using 4.72 of comdlg32.dll file but using v4.00 of shell32.dll file. Update the shell32.dll file first, then replace the comdlg32.dll file on Win95. so far, wiSHmaKeR has not responded to my latest posts about needing v4.72 of the comdlg32.dll and shell32.dll files under win95 to make the win95 notepad patches work. I will try to contact him personally.
