  1. before putting any computer [desktop or laptop] computer into Standby or Hibernate mode, remove any CDs or DVDs from the CD/DVD drives. CDs & DVDs that are in the drives keep on spinning and prevent the use of the Standby and Hibernate power management features. also, disable the Auto Insert Notification feature for ALL CD/DVD drives as this feature (when enabled) may also interfere with Standby or Hibernate.
  2. thanX! I was able to downoad A3 of the ME service pack. it was ok. yet it's far from foolproof. the ME pack again did NOT prompt a WinME user to first disable System File Protection before proceeding with the installation of updated files from the ME pack. Not all WinME users are smart enough to know that SFP (and also the System Restore utility) have to be disabled first before installing the ME pack. When running the ME pack and SFP is enabled many of the updated files from ME SP will be rejected by SFP. and after installing the ME pack with SFP disabled, WinME users MUST delete the wininit.log (NOT wininit.ini) file from the Windows folder. the wininit.log file is created after WinME reloads [when replacing files that are in use] and contains a list of files that WinME's SFP feature will restore from the WinME setup files. SFP will restore older versions of files listed in the wininit.log file when SFP is active. another reason to shut off WinME's SFP feature. So in the next alpha release of the ME service pack, I like to see it display a dialog box telling WinME users to disable system file protection and system restore before selecting the installation options for the ME pack. we want to make ME SP as foolproof as possible. Petr, perhaps you should try to request the 835732 security hotfixes specifically for Win98 & WinME if they are available. who knows? there might be a chance that MS has 'em. note that MS is only offering non-critical security hotfixes for 98/ME until 6-30-2006 through "typical assisted-support channels" as noted in the Extended Support for Windows 98/ME page: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean1 also, see if MS has the Q282949 wbemprox.dll hotfix for WinME. MS article 282949 does mention ME.
  3. the "crypto" files [cryp32.dll, cryptdlg.dll, cryptui.dll, schannel.dll, wintrust.dll, etc.] from the NT4 KB835732 update are incompatible with WinME and ME has higher versions of those files. Question to the_guy: Did you exclude the opkfix.cat file from alpha 3 of ME service pack? I asked this earlier and I will keep on asking & nagging this question until you respond to it. -erpdude8
  4. good choice to post the ME pack at the RapidUpload.com site. too bad the server does not support resuming interrupted downloads. oh well. I'll try to get the pack through my friend's DSL connection at his place instead of using the dialup connection at my place. or perhaps I can use my relative's Netzero dialup connection at her place since Netzero internet is faster than what I have. I have confirmed that Q281921 is no longer available for English language editions of WinME and only available for Japanese language edition of WinME.
  5. can you upload a copy of FE SP v2.01 alpha 2 at the RapidUpload.com site? it's better than the Rapidshare site. i konw the latest alpha of the ME service pack is posted at the RapidUpload.com site.
  6. You can request some ME hotfixes either by sending email to the MS support email address or by phoning them at 1-800-936-4900 (and then press 3) and request the specified hotfix. I know when I sent an email request for Q281921 for ME several months ago, it is only available for Japanese version of ME and no longer available for English editions of ME. Q329128 is no longer available as I was told via a email [you could try asking MS support for Q329128 by phone method instead of the email method].
  7. NO, NO NO! Do NOT include files from 835732. may cause instabilities & crashes under ME. most of the files from the Win2k & NT4 versions of 835732 [except for msasn1.dll file] are not compatible with WinME. and did you exclude opkfix.cat file from a3 of ME service pack?
  8. a belated happy new year 2006, MDGx. can you package the Win95/IE HTML Help v1.33 build 4.74.9273 addon into IExpress/Wextract? the current HHUPD95.EXE file will NOT work when running it directly from a write-protected floppy disk or a CD disc; the HHUPD.EXE and HHUPDNT.EXE files, on the other hand, do work on write-protected floppies and CD discs because those two HTML Help EXE installers extract files to a temp folder while HHUPD95.EXE does NOT; HHUPD95.EXE extract files on the current folder where HHUPD95.EXE is stored. I'll check back in a few days if HTML Help v4.74.9273 (hhupd95.exe) is created from IExpress/Wextract. I'll also send you my unofficial DCOM95 Update pack for Win95 & unofficial DCOM98 Update pack for Win98 which includes the imagehlp.dll file from WinME and iprop.dll file from NT4 SP6a. Both of the imagehlp.dll and iprop.dll files I mentioned work under Win9xME. Please post up the unofficial DCOM update packs on your site ASAP. also, take note that installing WMI 1.5 under Win95 requires DCOM 95. If DCOM95 is not installed under Win95, the WMI 1.5 installer will refuse to install the WMI files.
  9. Follow up on KB828028 for Win98: this security hotfix is available but not through Windows Update. One would have to phone Microsoft at 1-866-PCSAFETY {1-866-727-2338} and request hotfix 828028 for Win98. Dont bother emailing MS support because I've tried that several times but with no success. it seems like most MS support reps dont even know that a Win98 kb828028 hotfix exists or were never told the secret location to get the patch. so this patch seems to be only obtainable by calling MS support (with that specific 866 number) for it and few Win98 users were able to get the kb828028 hotfix. Here's another forum site that talks about the ASN.1 vulnerability and the Win98 patch for ASN.1: http://www.otwa.com/community/showthread.php?t=10612
  10. Check out the TweakHomePC pages on tweaking Win9x systems w/ 512 Mb of RAM or more: http://www.thpc.info/memory.html http://www.thpc.info/ram/vcache98.html http://www.thpc.info/ram/rammisc.html http://www.thpc.info/ram/ramother.html
  11. ...and i'm still waiting for alpha 3 of ME service pack. guess it will take even more time to flush out the crucial problems found in previous alpha releases.
  12. not really. I checked and tested the win95, 98 & ME versions of the original, unmodified Notepad.exe files. Note that only the Win98 and WinME versions of Notepad had a feature of changing the Font; the Win95 versions of Notepad did NOT have this feature. so adding the Font command in Win95 notepad wont do anything. it'll be useless to add the Font command in the 95 versions of notepad. that's because the Win98/ME versions of Notepad have the "ChooseFontA" function (the Win95 versions of notepad does not have "ChooseFontA" function; view Notepad.exe with the Quick View tool and you'll see whether or not ChooseFontA is listed. one would need a VB [visual basic] editor to add that function onto the 95 versions of notepad. so if the 95 & 95 sr2 patches for notepad add the Font command, they will need to be revised to exclude the Font command as clicking on the Font command will do nothing as I've tested the modified 95 notepad.exe files for myself.
  13. Latest version of Nero InfoTool I know of is version 3.01 posted here: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html I currently have v3.01 of Nero InfoTool on my WinME machine and I first could not find the feature of InfoTool listing any OS patches for WinME, even though QFECheck lists the ME patches that I've installed. ok. I did eventually found the part where Infotool lists the OS patches. it's just that Petr didn't show where or how to use the feature. Click on the Save icon [the "disk" icon] to display the 'InfoTool: Save/Print' dialog box and then scroll to the bottom of the list. now there will be a list of some OS patches installed.
  14. hmm, strange. I can force the KB905915 XP patch to install the QFE set of files. I ran the WindowsXP-KB905915-x86-ENU.exe file with the /B:SP2QFE switch to install the QFE edition of the updated files instead of the normal GDR edition. one could try that on an XP machine. the kb905915 patch might have changed some registry settings and that could be the reason why some people had problems. so open Registry Editor and check the registry for the entry Coolsights2000 mentioned in his latest post, delete it and re-apply the KB905915 update.
  15. furthermore, the opkfix.cat file actually requires WinME's SFP feature to be loaded at startup and left on. simply registering the opkfix.cat file with the SUCATREG.EXE file w/out SFP enabled wont properly register the .cat file. a good reason to leave out the Q271434 opkfix.cat fix. a choice between the inclusion of either Q276602 pci.vxd 4.90.3004 fix or Q285882 pci.vxd 4.90.3003 fix. It's safe to include Q285882, which has no side effects. Q276602 for ME has a known problem documented in MS article 810447. so far, the MESP has been a disappointment. it has long ways to go before an actual beta can be produced.
  16. MDGx: your revised first post on the first page of this thread still mentions about the Win98 Vip.386 fix as the following: "* Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE HP Omnibook Portable Computer Docking Error VIP.386 (build 4.10.2002 for Win98/98 SP1 + build 4.10.2227 for Win98 SE) Fix" correct this to read: "* Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE HP Omnibook Portable Computer Docking Error VIP.386 (build 4.10.2003 for Win98/98 SP1 + build 4.10.2227 for Win98 SE) Fix" I'm going to take a nice break from the MSFN site. I'll be back after new year's 2006.
  17. What do you mean by "extra usb support"? USB is supported since Windows 95 OSR2. Petr Win95 OSR2 did not support USB at first. One had to install an update to add some USB support to Win95 OSR2 (which updated OSR2 to OSR2.1) but USB support for osr2.x was barely wimpy. some usb devices made in the late 90s require Win98 (or work better in Win98). maybe. just be sure to install ALL Win98 FE USB hotfixes/updates first to clear up some of the usb bugs before installing any third party usb devices & drivers.
  18. According to the Extended Support page on Windows 98 & ME posted here: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean1 any existing updates posted at Windows Update [WU] will be available through June 30, 2006. so the WU site (including WU catalog) should work indefinitely for Win98 & ME, even past 6-30-2006.
  19. then why are the Q282949 wbemprox.dll and Q285895 cimwin32.dll updates for WMI 1.5 are in the 98se SP, bristols? can you answer that, huh? HUH! maybe we'll let Gape or Petr answer this question and explain to you why those two WMI 1.5 updates are included, which they should be included in the SP and they are.
  20. yes, it should be optional and not forced upon. besides, some third party apps require WMI 1.5 to be installed and may not work correctly without WMI. WMI buggy? yeah right!!! I know for sure Windows ME has WMI 1.5 installed and removing it may break ME, especially it's Help & Support Center feature. Win2000/XP/2003/Vista also have embedded WMI and it worked well. The Win2k, XP & later versions of WMI seem to be more stable than the ones for W9x/NT4. But at least I know how to setup WMI 1.5 under 9x systems and configure it to work with little or no problems. Also an inclusion for next release of 98SE SP - MDGx's unofficial OLE Automation build 4526 update that includes these specific files: ASYCFILT.DLL version 2.40.4526 OLEAUT32.DLL version 2.40.4522 (we all know build 4526 doesnt work well on 9xME systems) OLEPRO32.DLL version 5.0.4526 STDOLE2.TLB version 2.40.4526
  21. almost forgot to thank wiSHmaKeR for making the notepad patches for win98fe and winme. they both worked great! maybe I'll try modifying the win95 version of Notepad manually.
  22. maybe the browseui.dll file was corrupted or the IE update KB905915 was corrupted and not downloaded properly. un-install the patch and download & install a clean copy of the update. you can get the KB905915 update for XP here instead from Windows Update: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/d...915-x86-ENU.exe for those using NIS 2006, disable it before installing the IE KB905915 update. ditto when installing any kind of XP update. NIS2006 might have interfered with the update install process. I have not found any problems with the IE KB905915 patches I have installed on both my Windows ME and my brother's XP machines.
  23. perhaps. but you will have to ask for Q285882 from Microsoft support. It's important to note that the Win98 SE version of Q276602 (pci.vxd 4.10.2227) is safe to use while the WinME version of Q276602 (pci.vxd 4.90.3004) may cause problems. that goes to show you that one version of a patch is not always equal to the other version of the patch; bottom line, one version of a patch causes problems while the other version does not. Added on 12-15-2005 = please see top of topic.________________________________________ UPDATED 12-15-2005 Please see top of topic for newest updates: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 UH-OH! speaking of IE Update KB905915, a Windows XP user has found problems with KB905915. see here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=62879
  24. surprisingly, when I installed FE SP v2.01 alpha under a clean install of Win98 w/ IE4.01 SP1, things were pretty stable. additions I like to see in FESP 2.01 beta [another reminder that Gape will post a beta and RC for FESP]: files from the oepatsp1.exe file- inetcomm.dll v4.72.3155.0 msimnui.dll v4.72.3120.0 wab32.dll v4.72.3155.0 use the info from the oepatsp1.inf file to install the files. Q244356 urlmon.dll v4.72.3710.2500 Q246094 shdocvw.dll v4.72.3711.2900 Q265258 asctrls.ocx v4.72.3718.1400 these IE4 updates should also work with IE 4.01 SP1 under Win98. and the iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll files should be removed from FESP for the greater good [and better reliability] of the 98 service pack.
  25. NT & Win2k has been pulled out of retail channel already (even before stopping MSDN access)! oh well. too bad for NT4 & W2k users. I believe Win2000 is now in extended support mode but Win2000 should also support hyperthreading.
