the missing 2mb ram problem is barely insignificant. I also booted my WinME machine into safe mode & WinME reported the full 256Mb of memory. that's because in Safe mode, WinME doesnt load my usual Intel 810 video drivers, it loads the Standard VGA driver. when I rebooted to normal mode, WinME reports 255Mb of RAM and I am using the latest Intel 810 video drivers available. this missing ram doesnt bother me as my ME system runs well and there is NO definite fix for it. I like to see the QFECheck.exe and QFECheck.hlp files added onto Gape's 98se service pack; both of those files are included in the_guy's ME service pack.

I meant not using and IE & non-IE browser simultaneously, Petr. as for all web browsers on your machine remembering your login, if you clicked on the checkbox to remember your login then there is no problem. I dont have that option on (checkbox UNchecked) to remember logins on my machine for security reasons. I use Mozilla SeaMonkey 1.0 B which came out late December 2005. A final release of Seamonkey 1.0 is scheduled to be due sometime this late January. I think the ME service pack is progressing more quickly that I expected; too bad the service pack for Win98 Gold isnt like that as the win98 gold service pack 2.01 alpha hasnt been updated for at least 6 months & needs a bunch of new updates/fixes.

I have already answered this question, Kiki. updating win95b to win95c is easy. install osr2 usb supplement patch on top of win95b and make a registry change (you have to run Registry Editor to do that) from B to C. In Registry Editor, go to following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion Change "SubVersionNumber" entry from " B" to " C". that is it. now it will be Win95C. as for unofficial Win95 service pack, it's barely impossible to create one since Win95 is ancient history and barely nobody uses Win95 anymore; plus win95 needs several addons that may not even fit in the pack. Win95 is no longer suitable for today's world and has way too many flaws and so many third party software nowadays require at least Win98 or Win2000.

I have also found out why the notepad patches for Win95 original & Win95 osr2 do not work and how to solve this problem. All versions of Win95 use comdlg32.dll version 4.00.950 or 4.00.951. Lucersoft patchers dont work at all with those versions of the comdlg32.dll file. Win95 users will need to replace the COMDLG32.DLL file with either version 4.72.3110.2 (from Win98 gold) or version 4.72.3510.2300 (from Win98 SE) to make the Win95 notepad patches work as I've tested for myself. The comdlg32.dll file must be overwritten in DOS mode outside Win95 because the comdlg32.dll file is always in use. search for COMDLG32.DLL version 4.72 at some search sites, download & save the file, exit Win95 into msdos mode and move the newer comdlg32.dll file into the Windows\system folder. then reload Win95 and run the Win95 notepad patches again.
-
I have found out that the notepad patches were created from Lucersoft patcher AND looking at the Lucersoft web site, Lucersoft patcher requires Win98, 2000, ME or XP. Lucersoft's patcher does NOT work under Win95 & NT4. so, wiSHmaKeR, you will have to use something else to patch the notepad files under Win95.

btw Petr, what exact version of Nero Infotool [infotool.exe] do you have installed on your computer? right-click on the InfoTool.exe file on the 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero Toolkit' folder and select Properties. The Infotool.exe file I have is version 3.0.1.0.
-
The 95NP_181205.exe & 95osrNP_181205.exe notepad patches for all versions of Win95 did NOT work at all, wiSHmaKeR. Double-clicking on them did absolutely nothing. Looks like the Win95 patches DO need to be revised immediately.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes

OH boooooo! BOOOOOOOO! booooo! BOOOOOOO! <the crowd in my mind is BOOing at Petr for not attempting to ask microsoft support for thw winme Q828028 hotfix> Then the way you requested for the Win98 Q828028 hotfix from microsoft support by email with "no problems" was a FLUKE! A stroke of LUCK! Then how do I really know that it was easy to ask for the Q828028 patches from MS support. what is your secret? I know I had a hard time asking for Win98 Q828028 patch by email several times and I just kept getting convoluted, circuitous responses. i'm getting a little suspicious... some Win9xME users prefer the Microsoft patches instead of "unofficial" patches because they are uncomfortable with unofficial solutions. And I get that. -
I haven't actually opened the box up to look, but there are no such jumpers or switches mentioned in the motherboard manual............ I dont think it's a hardware problem at all. As I said before try updating your video drivers to resolve the missing 2Mb RAM problem. if the updated drivers dont fix the missing memory prob, then dont worry about it. note to Gape. The unofficial U891711 patch has been revised on 1-5-2006. It's almost the same as the original U891711 patch but a memory problem has been fixed. this revised one should be included in the next release of the 98se service pack.

try using IE 5.5 SP2 eidenk. also avoid using both an IE and a non-IE browser to view MSFN.org forum sites. I did something like that (use IE6 SP1 and Opera 8.51) and either browser cant remember my login user name. stick to using either IE or Opera. sorry eidenk but not every ME user is like you. I hardly disable sytem file protection on my WinME system unless I have to install certain unofficial patches under WinME (and then re-enable SFP after installing those patches). disabling SFP prevents the un-install of IE and many official MS IE updates. that I know for sure. note to the_guy: creating an un-installation confirmation dialog box for the ME service pack is somewhat easy. view the contents of Gape's Win98se service pack in Winzip, extract the spuninst.inf file and open that file in Notepad. The [DefaultUninstall] section starts off with the following: BeginPrompt = Uninst.BeginPrompt Then go to the "Uninst.BeginPrompt" section of spuninst.inf file: [uninst.BeginPrompt] Prompt=%Begin_Uninstall_Prompt% ButtonType=YESNO Title=%Begin_Uninstall_Title% then go to the bottom of the spuninst.inf file and you will see these lines: Begin_Uninstall_Prompt = "Do you really want to remove Windows98 SE Service Pack?" Begin_Uninstall_Title = "Windows98 SE Service Pack" You may want to modify the spuninst.inf file in your WinME service pack and make the adjustments accordingly to add an uninstall confirmation box.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
nope. there's no final release of the unofficial WinME SP, yet Kiki. it will be a while before that since it is in alpha 3 stage and hasnt reached beta. come back in a couple of months for the unofficial WinME SP. maybe by middle of March of this year (or in early Spring) there might be at least an RC (release candidate) version of WinME service pack. Win95 C isnt much different from Win95B; win95c = win95b + osr2.1 usb supplement update w/ some registry changes. -
yes Petr but only in Nero InfoTool's Save/Print dialog box after clicking on the Save icon. I use Nero version 6.3.1.25 on both my WinME and my brother's WinXP computer. that version had an older release of Nero Infotool so I downloaded & installed the newer one at the Cdspeed2000.com site. Nero CD/DVD Speed, Nero DriveSpeed and Nero InfoTool are created by Erik Deppe. you may want to contact him from this page about the problem you are having with Nero Infotool not showing all OS patches installed on your computer: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=email.html personally, I'd rather use QFECheck to display a list of all OS updates installed on my ME computer.

98SE + ME MS06-002 Security Fix = T2EMBED.DLL
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
MDGx, can you create an unofficial T2EMBED.DLL v5.00.2195.7073 patch for NT4 SP6a? I believe that file should also work under NT4. unfortunately, when installing the Win98 or WinME version of the T2EMBED.DLL v5.00.2195.7073 patch, QFECheck cant find the updated t2embed.dll file. MS screwed up somewhere in the kb905819.inf file. I mentioned about it on my latest post at the New 98FE + 98SE + ME patches available thread. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I've gotten the KB905819 T2EMBED.DLL updates for Win98/ME. however, Microsoft made one minor boo-boo in the KB905819.inf file. Here's where MS messed up in the INF file: --------- ;qfecheck HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%\,,,"%UpdName%" HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%\,,,"%UpdName%" HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%10%\t2embed.dll,,"5.0.2195.7073" --------- It should be: HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%11%\t2embed.dll,,"5.0.2195.7073" %10% points to Windows folder while %11% points to Windows\System folder. So if you view the Q905819 update in QFEcheck it will say: "Tmembed.dll 5.0.2195.7073 NOT FOUND" I opened Regedit and go to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Updates\WinME\UPD908519 it says: C:\WINDOWS\t2embed.dll 5.0.2195.7073 change C:\WINDOWS\t2embed.dll to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\t2embed.dll and QFECheck will find the "missing" t2embed.dll file. --- and I'm still waiting for Petr to obtain the WinME version of the KB828028 patch. I thought it would be easy for him to ask for ME kb828028 from MS, just like it was easy for him to ask for the W98 kb828028 patch. what's the hold up? -
wintrust.dll v5.131.2195.6824 (from Win2k KB835732) breaks WinME, I know for sure crypt32.dll 5.131.2195.6824 (from Win2k KB835732) also broke WinME; sorry Petr. those two files are specifically for Win2k SP4 only and dont work properly under other Windows versions. Version 5.00.3103.1000 of powercfg.cpl also does not work properly under WinME as it messed up the Hibernate power management option on my ME machine. also DO NOT USE! Use dispex.dll version 5.6.0.6626 dated 8/29/2002 from the Iemil_1.cab file of IE6 SP1 setup.

Service Pack problem (kb 891711)
erpdude8 replied to Bethrezen's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
MS kb891711 for Win98/ME [version 1] had Kb891711.exe ver. 4.10.2222 dated 2/22/2005 Q891711.dll ver. 4.10.2222 dated 2/18/2005 <this one was known to cause problems on some W98/ME machines> MS kb891711 for Win98/ME [version 2] had Kb891711.exe ver. 4.10.2223 dated 3/23/2005 Q891711.dll ver. 4.10.2222 dated 3/18/2005 <this one resolved many of the problems caused by the previous release> Unofficial KB891711 had Kb891711.exe ver. 4.10.2224 dated 10/4/2005 Q891711.dll ver. 4.10.2223 dated 10/4/2005 Gape should include newer unofficial KB891711 fix in the 98se SP that was modified on 1-5-2006. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
MDGx: The unofficial WinME Gdi.exe/Gdi32.dll v4.90.3002 patch did not work. Even though I shut down Stmgr.exe with either Coolkill or Winkill and ran the WinME patch & rebooted, I got message "Windows detected and repaired inconsistencies in some of your system files. Before these repairs can take effect, Windows must be restarted. Do you want to restart Windows now?" Looks like WinME's SFP feature ran at startup and saw the wininit.log file (NOT wininit.ini file) referencing the gdi.exe and gdi32.dll files and restored the older GDI files after a Windows restart. You have to prevent Stmgr.exe from loading at startup (from Msconfig) and then run the unofficial WinME GDI patch for it to work just right. In order for the unofficial WinME Gdi.exe/Gdi32.dll 4.90.3002 patch to really work, you MUST disable System Restore, shut down Stmgr.exe AND disable the SFP [statemgr] Startup entry by running System Configuration Utility [msconfig.exe], click on Startup tab and uncheck Statemgr and click on OK; dont reboot yet. Now run the unofficial WinME kb912919 patch, and after WinME loads, delete the wininit.log (NOT the wininit.ini) file from the Windows folder. If you dont delete the wininit.log file and you re-enable SFP [or run Statemgr.exe or Stmgr.exe], the dialog box saying "Windows detected and repaired inconsistencies..." will appear and restore the older Gdi.exe and Gdi32.dll files. So before re-enabling WinME's SFP feature, delete the wininit.log file first. Please post up these instructions on how to really get the unofficial WinME Gdi.exe/Gdi32.dll 4.90.3002 patch to work. Also the two GDI files from unofficial Win98se 4.10.2226 Gdi.exe/Gdi32.dll fix have the wrong version dates. They should be dated 1/6/2006 instead of 10/4/2005. Good that you posted both the WinME pci.vxd 4.90.3003 and 4.90.3004 fixes and that you listed the problem the pci.vxd 4.90.3004 fix causes. I was a little ticked off that you first posted the pci.vxd v4.90.3004 Q276602 fix w/out listing the problem that it causes. You know better not to prematurely post up patches that have problems and not list the problems. Hopefully you won't commit any kind of mental blunder like that again. PsycoUnc, The 1/9 MSASN1.DLL 5.00.2195.6824 fix is NOT exactly MDGx's even though it is listed at the MDGx site. That patch was from Microsoft. Microsoft created the MSASN1.DLL 5.00.2195.6824 fix for Win98, NOT MDGx. -
nice that MDGx has a broadband cable modem connection to the net. someday when my brother and I move to another city, we'll be dumping dial-up and getting DSL for good. satellite net connection users might also want to stick with using the 98se version of ndis.vxd instead of using the ME version.

Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I'll try out the newly released U891711 patch as soon as I can get it. I'll let you know how well it did on the computers that I've tested. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
hopefully the author should patch the ones from Win98 Gold ASAP. so Petr, have you worked on getting the KB828028 hotfix for Windows ME? please respond as soon as you obtain the WinME kb828028 patch. note to MDGx about D3DIM700.DLL build 4.7.0.723 Fix for ME; this fix is included in DirectX 8 and higher. May want to put "DirectX 8 and higher include D3DIM700.DLL fix". Or put "DirectX 9.0c installs newer D3DIM700.DLL file build 4.09.00.0902." -
It does NOT matter why MS removed the cpu identification feature in build 2224 of of sysdm.cpl. who cares anyway? I agree with Petr in using a utility to identify CPU info since the 98se versions of sysdm.cpl [builds 2222, 2223 or 2224] cant properly identify new types of CPUs like Pentium 4s or Pentium M [M for mobile cpus]. I use Microsoft's System Information tool [msinfo32.exe] to view the kind of processor I have on my machines. It wasnt the AGP Aperture Size that you have to adjust unless you had used a large value. Try looking for the Shared Video Memory or the System Share Memory Size option in the BIOS and making changes to that. Also try updating your video drivers. older drivers might have also caused the missing 2Mb RAM problem. Win2000/XP systems may not have the problem because they use a different type of video drivers.
-
it looks like version 4.10.2224 of the sysdm.cpl file for win98se was not modified correctly unlike version 4.90.3001 of sysdm.cpl for winme. anyone want to try to make an unofficial sysdm.cpl 4.10.2225 fix for 98se that would contain the fix from build 2224 but will also display the cpu info. just asking. Dave-H, the missing 2Mb of RAM problem is due to the integrated video [VGA] feature on the motherboard sharing some memory with the RAM chips. I also have that problem on my ME system and it is NOT a big deal; the system properties of my WinME machine show 255 Mb of RAM when it really has 256 megs. The built-in Intel 810 video graphics feature on my computer used some portion of the system memory for video. This inaccuracy does NOT cause major problems on anything as my ME computer runs perfectly fine. It is even like that on most new computers where video RAM is shared with some system RAM like with my brother's XP computer where I can specify in BIOS setup how much shared system RAM can be used (or shared) for video RAM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gape, can you add an "un-installation prompt" in the next release of the 98se service pack? I mean a dialog box asking whether or not to go on with the uninstallation of the pack. I know when I double-click on the Unofficial 98se service pack entry in Add/Remove programs, it performs an immediate uninstall. And when I double-click on the XP service pack 2 entry from Add/Remove programs on my brother's XP computer, I get a dialog box asking me whether to uninstall xp sp2 or not. also you might want to add the Update Information Tool files qfecheck.exe and qfecheck.hlp in the 98se sercice pack. Those two files were included in the_guy's ME service pack.

I notice in a3 of the me service pack, the spupdate.inf file mentions the wdmaud.sys file from Q316795. this file was neither included in the sp2.cab file nor the supp.cab file. looks like the latest wdmaud.sys file needs to be included in the next release of the ME SP. also, I would like to see a dialog box that asks a WinME user whether to proceed with un-installing the ME service pack or not. Like with Gape's 98se Service pack, double-clicking on the un-install ME service pack entry from Add/Remove programs control panel applet performs an immediate uninstall w/out prompting the user to go on with the uninstallation of the pack or not. I know with Win2k, XP & 2003 service packs, they ask whether to uninstall the SP or not when double-clicking on the uninstall SP entry from Add/Remove programs.
-
Dave-H, you mean version 4.10.2223 of sysdm.cpl file. it was never released because of an unforseen problem only Microsoft knows (dont ask what the type of problem was and dont ask why 2223 of sysdm.cpl file wasnt released). the "negative value" bug is the value of virtual memory hard disk space in the Virtual Memory dialog box. to access the Virtual Memory box, open the System control panel app, click on the Performance tab and click on the Virtual Memory button. that is where the "negative value" bug would occur if you have 32Gb+ or more free HD space. see MS kb article 272620 on the "negative value" problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272620 the sysdm.cpl file in the .zip file is version 4.10.2222!

recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
here's the eWeek.com article that mentions the ASN.1 Vulnerability: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,4149,1533215,00.asp it also mentions win98/me Petr had just told me he received the kb828028 win98 security hotfix by sending an email request. what great luck for him!!! maybe it was the way he sent his kb828028 win98 hotfix request that someone was able to provide him with the patch. the reps that responded to my kb828028 win98 hotfix request were either dumb or didn't know the win98 kb828028 patch exists. let's see if he can request the kb828028 security hotfix for winme.
