How to avoid being "upgraded to Win 10" against your will:
helpdesk98 replied to dencorso's topic in Windows 8
I have been running 8.1 without updates since the beginning of August no trouble yet. I have been running Windows 7 with out updates since last year when I reinstalled it (mostly out of laziness I kept getting updates that broke certain drivers & did not feel like vetting each update) No major issues with that system, but I have very stagnate systems once I get them setup the way I want them (software/Settings) and everything is working as expected I usually create an image. If something happens to come up and I have to change anything I create an image prior and then preceded to make the change and test it dose not happen very often. -
Microsoft = The Borg Assimilate NOW! It as easy as upgrading to Windows 10 and signing in with your Microsoft Account. out of curiosity dose disabling UAC in W8/8.1 kill metro? that might be quick (temporary until I can get to the clients workstation) way to kill it.

I like my Mac I hardly ever boot into Mac OS mostly just into Win 7. I have had very few problems running Windows on it mostly just Apple drivers not be installed quite right. It is a little beast!

I'm not an expert in this area, but 2 thoughts cross my mind 1 the .wim contains more than one version of Windows and you need to select an index 2 your reading from a DVD or mounted image and the program you are using needs it to be writable (so copy it to a folder on your desktop) Check out the VLite section of the forum http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/177-ntlite/ and the Windows Automate Installation Kit i'm not sure if they have one for 10 or not

the Settings Panel looks similar to the one on Mac OS

don't worry too much I came to my senses not too long after Vista SP1 I downgraded my system to XP. It was better at the time, however, this is a Windows 10 thread so I should get back on topic. I am sure I will find something in W10 that I like it will just take some more experimenting.

viva la Vista! for some odd resion I liked Vista's UI, however, I when from 98 straight to Vista

I got a chance to really play with W10 today, I did not do anything major mostly just explore the system and install & configure classic shell (I have no use/interest for the new menu). I have got to say it gave me a headache. I think just the attempt at over simplification ie: control panel & settings having to go between the two to check or change various settings. It just gets confusing/frustrating when you go to place that used to have solution and realize you have to search a slew of menus to find a simple answer. The least they could do is put a shortcut in Control Panel.

This just a terrible reason to move to Windows 10 Source: http://www.theverge.com/2015/11/25/9799098/microsoft-windows-pc-computer-help-tips-tricks-clean-up/in/9564949

So when we agreed to the Windows 10 EULA, did we also agree to play Monopoly?

I will hang on to my W7/8 no updates as long as possible. I guess for me its good news that my systems are relatively static and don't change often.

Just to see I setup a Windows Server 2008 as a Windows Deployment Server just to see if there was any change. I only noticed the white rounded edges when certain dialog were opened. -

I created the boot image using Windows Server 08 R2. Could that have anything to do with it? -
Deeper impression: Windows 10 suposibly out preforms Steam OS. So that's a good thing for MS? Source: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/11/ars-benchmarks-show-significant-performance-hit-for-steamos-gaming/

Well I found my first piece of good news: it looks like you can do a clean install after and upgrade! -
@ BudwS Any thoughts on Windows 10 Telemetry or pushy default programs?

Windows 10 10240 to 10586 upgrade change reports
helpdesk98 replied to Tripredacus's topic in Windows 10
Well I managed to upgrade from an older build (really old) last night to 10586, however, the only thing good I can say is the upgrade worked smoothly using the ISO. I can not say the same for the one I attempted to get via Windows Update. I hate upgrades I prefer to do clean installs. -
I agree they are moving over to Linux. In my last year of school (end of 2012 near the time XP official support ended) my school replaced most machines with thin clients running Linux that support Citrix. I think we will see more of that kind of network in the future schools/businesses will not have to worry about buying licences for Windows Clients or have to worry about vetting every single update that come down the pipeline pushing to upgrade to W10. They will only have to manages their servers and remote applications.

That sounds almost like a textbook definition of spyware. Another reason to keep your smart TV off the Internet and your smartphone turned off except for when you're expecting or making a call. --JorgeA I read an article a good while back were a company was giving out Android Phones for free the users just had to allow the phone to recored everything it heard and sent the info back! (i don't think it record phone calls ect, but who really knows) I wounder how many people got that service? lol

bit off topic, but are there any alternative UIs that don't rely heavily the ever changing/degenerating defult Windows UI?
-
It is not quite the true classic theme, but it is as close as I have got on Windows 8.1 without using hacks or other mods.
-
I don't use XP much, however, I don't see a problem with using it, I used 98 for a great long time with no issues so why not XP. As long as you are careful aka "common sense" you should be alright. Long Live Windows XP!

I am still running build 10130 lol. I attempted to update it using the the "store" method, however, it opens for a few seconds and then crashes. Hopefully this weekend I can grab the latest available build and play with it some more.

I wounder if it will have any shinny new features or just ads and spyware? Also are you still able to run experimental builds of W10 I let my insider preview expire a long while back. I haven't had a whole lot of time to play with any new builds.
