@NoelC I am just having fun with it. The picture in my previous post with the kinda classic environment on Windows 10 was me messing around with Visual Studio in an attempt to make explorer what it once was (mostly has a joke). I am surprised I got as far as I did in around an hour of messing around. Ultimately with Windows 10 its not worth using on a real/production machine (at this point maybe at no point at all). I will be sticking with Windows 8.1 and 7 for the time being only moving when the time comes and trying to make aging systems preform a modern task is worthless, however, I will all ways experiment with new and old versions of operating systems; I find it enjoyable. @Microsoft quit trying to be your completion it doesn't work. be something new and exciting!

Cario shell had a good littel run, but I have not found anything since that project shutdown.

Classic (Win 98 style with search bar enabled) it simple and straight to the point.

hopefully classic shell lives on for a long time I have tried using the W10 start menu and I just can't do it. in fact I have trouble using xp/vista/7 style start menus now!

I plan on customizing some more the folder thing was just me messing around with some icons I had from my fedora setup. I will have to check out your Windows10ReTweaker script @NoelC . If I get some time tonight I am going to lock my W10 VM down and play with it some more. I will also have to figure out how to make snapshots in VM Ware Play I just started using it. Prepare your tinfoil hats: on a random note: NSA or should we be looking at some other government entity I just feel like the NSA is the "fall guy" the mystery entity wants us to be looking at as they do the things that they do. Eh?

I think this is the best customization I have found to date! It kinda works however depending on the folder view you get a mix of classic and modern folder icons.

Will do. Im going to let this one install and later I will roll back to my Windows 7 snapshot and I will try let it sit too long. Once it starts the upgrade process the "Cancel Upgrade" option goes away.

Just doing my mandatory upgrade and noticed something: Don't worry I am running this in a VM purely for testing purposes.

now I know this is way out there, but I think if MS went a different direction with this "upgrade" and rather than do an upgrade allow you to install W10 on a separate partition allowing you to keep your older installation while still giving you the upgrade for free I think that would have been better. Note: I know that comes with its own set of problems and would probably never happen, but I can dream lol.

Once busy season at work it over and we are past Microsoft's end date for the free downgrade to Windows 10 I want to start getting updates again (I have had no issues since disabling them). Obviously they will still need vetted and any known updates that have any connection to the Windows 10 upgrade will be avoided. We will see what happens though they could end up extending the date for the free upgrade just to get a few more unsuspecting victims.

always be suspicious, never trust, and even when the read looks clear look again at least when it comes to Microsoft updates and crossing the road. :-)

nope! proud to say none of my systems have purposely or accidentally upgraded migrated to Windows 10. On a random note this week I have talked to several friends that got migrated via Windows update and they don't like W10, however, they just don't care enough to down grade even when I offer to do it for them for free. I find it odd they are willing to just put up with something that they do not like and find harder to use.

I can see it being both good and bad, but trying to focus on the positives for now :-) . @NoelC what about cygwin? read about it a while back some how allowing Linux software to run in some shape or form on Windows. edit: I did a quick google search and found it provides simular functionality using GNU and Open source tools Link: cygwin

I just liked the gadgets more as a quick view I had cpu monitor /ram monitor I am not into customizing Windows as I used to be mostly due to a lack of time so I find something that works and I keep with it for the time being.

I remember the Gadgets from Vista did not know they are still in 7. Are they still restricted to the Windows Side bar? I liked them mostly because they looked clean and crisp and felt like they matched the UI of the system.

I will have to try it when I get home. Is there a version for Linux? Currently I use FF 90% (normal web browsing) and Chrome 10% (Video playback issues with Hulu/Amazon chrome usually works). I am glad to here most FF plugins work that will make the transition easier.

looks good! I have the default Windows 10 desktop the only modification (at this point) I have running is Classic Shell I am waiting on any other mods until I have upgraded to the latest build. Are you using Classic Shell or Start is Back or something else?

I just shut off updates so far nothing bad has happened yet... How much longer do we have until the one year of free Windows 10 is up? July-ish?

I have had mixed experiences with 10, but I am running them all in VMs on a computer that can kinda handle it lol. For some odd reason virtual or physical I have trouble opening the start menu (unless I install an alternate menu) and when I do get it to open the the task bar dies. Anyway now that I know someone successfully installed it on a Mac I will attempt it after making proper backups I have to find something for Mac OS the only thing I have done with it is setup boot camp. This should be a fun project.
