  1. in a way you are right. I believe you can add shortcuts to the start screen. you can also access the desktop from the metro start screen and you can put shortcuts to different programs and files there. has for the device manager/control panel hit the windows key + r and type control into the run prompt and hit ok control panel will open. on my home computer I live on the desktop all my files and folders are there so my desktop is a bit messy too lol.
  2. I'd never heard of it! Just came back from visiting their website. The idea sure is intriguing, although it looks like the most recent version is more than two years old. Maybe the release of Windows 8 with the Metro UI will give 'em a boost. --JorgeA Its has been a while since I have used cairo I have been out of the computer seen for a while lol.
  3. MS making poor user interface decisions would allow other shell interfaces (ex: cairo shell) to gain some extra momentum.
  4. I can not stand metro. For a home user it is fine however for bussinuss it is a waste of my time. I did run into issues with joining domains that I created with early versions of Windows Server. I have not explored server 2012 too much yet lol.
  5. I found a way to do it with the old query builder from MS Access. The way I was trying to do it was way to complex for me lol. Thanks for the help
  6. I am working on a small vb project I have a small one table MS Access database connected to my vb project. Everything load properly and responds the way I want it to. Now I want to add querys based on variables. In the screen shot below I have a input box for the drawing id and a submit button when I click the submit button I want it to run this sql query: select drawingID from tblshapes where drawingID = [varable from the input box] any ideas I tried to use the query builder, but I can not insert variables from my inputbox
  7. I ask this because I have a few clients running systems with XP and Internet Explorer just cant keep up. I wanted to findout what browsers I good on XP it has been quite some time since I have used the old system to search the web.
  8. I the book I was using missed a step when editing the configuration files. To compile the latest netcat for fedora you have to run make linux, but it will not work without being configured properly. Thanks for the help!
  9. I am taking a security class and we are playing with the netcat tool. I was reading online that the version that comes with the OS dose not have full features. So I looked for the tar ball on the Cd that came with my book (nc110.tgz) I extracted it to my PWD and I made the appropriate changes to the make file. The last command I am supposed to run is make (unix flavor). This is were I fail I tried to enter "make fedora" it errors out. I looked through the make file for other flavors thinking that fedora might go by a different name, but I have not found anything that works. Any ideas? thanks helpdesk98
  10. I am not nuts about the start screen, but I do strongly agree with your last two statements I like the idea of having hyper v! and I really like the fact that you can mount vhds and iso. I like to move back and forth between the real system and the VMs. Another thing I like is how at times explorer is like MS Office I use office a lot so it feels familiar.
  11. One of the reason XP is still around is because corporations have not may the move to 7 yet. There thoughts are if it is not broke don't fix it. I talked to my former boss he said he was going to begin introducing 7 ready PCs into the network over the next few years and has the needs change he was going to start rolling out 7 images to fully take advantage of the hardware.
  12. I played with all the authentication settings for Thunderbird, but I could not get it to work. Eventually I got Windows Live Mail and Outlook to work I was just using the wrong email. I was trying to use the domain log in has the email (tbarnes@domain.com) instead of (timbarnes@domain.com). I will have to play with it some more this time I was mostly exploring just trying to get a feel of how it works. Thanks for the help!
  13. I opened services and set IMAP & POP to start automatically that seemed to fix most of my problems thanks cluberti! When I enter some account information into the Windows Live Mail Client it excepted my account and downloaded all folders and messages. I seem to be able to receive all messages, but I can not send messages from the client I got an authentication error saying "The account cbarnes@mshome.com can not be authenticated" (something close to that the VM is at the school so I can not access it from home) edit: I am going to download virtual box & the required iso from msdn aa and build a box at home
  14. I just created a practice server 2008 r2 virtual machine and I have been playing with various things that I know I will be learning in class this fall. I decided to play with exchange server 2010 the install went fine I did defaults for all questions asked. Once I restarted my server I found the web addition for the server that runs via IIS7 the local url is https://mailserver.mshome.com/owa that worked fine I was able to send and receive mail between my domain users. now I want connect to my server using thunderbird and windows live essentials mail client. I have tried set it manualy useing these settings for IMAP mailserver.mshome.com port 993 (not sure on port number) thanks in advance helpdesk98
  15. I have seen it done before. My boss showed me his Windows Deployment server it looked like vista installation. I think he had to run sysprep to generalize the system. Then he he loaded it to the image server. I imagen if you make a win pe 2.0 disk and then deploy the xppro.wim manualy it will work. Look up: Windows automated Deployment Kit it has basic instructions
  16. thanks im going to give it a try\ Update: making the unattended.xml file kinda worked, but I had to enter the name of a specific wim image I want to be able to see all the different images in the folder. I may just be tweaking the wrong settings not sure I will try to upload some screen pics later!
  17. I am trying to make a PE environment for PXE boot. I am a completely new to this idea, but I wan't to try. So far I have downloaded a Win7 ENT ISO and WIndows AIK. I want to use the install evniornment from Windows setup, but one problem I am running into is the install CD looks for install.wim in "CDDRIVE:\Sources\Install.wim" I want it to look "J:\Windows_Images" is there any way I can change were it is looking for the files?
  18. I have been working with Windows AIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit) for 7 and I was wondering if it was possible to make a custom wim and then be able to access if durring Windows Installation? I have made a custome .wim file from my computer named install2.wim I have Generalized it using sysprep.exe I have been looking at this guide for an all in one boot cd but it dosent tell me how to add a custom wim file: http://www.windowsvalley.com/blog/create-windows-7-aio-all-in-one-dvd-or-merge-all-editions-of-windows-7-in-single-dvd/
  19. ok well that saved me some time I gess ill just make a backup of my windows 7 install and burn it to a disk and go back to Vista that way I have 7 if i decide to go back.
  20. I have a question: I received the windows 7 upgrade DVD I did a clean install (rather then installing it over my vista installation), but what I for got was my blue ray drives codac was p reinstalled on the vista installation. Now what I want to do is make an Image of my Win7 install create a .VHD and put the image on that and save it to a flash disk then I want to run the HP vista restore disk (so I get all my stuff back) then I want to mount the VHD so I can boot off of it. Will it work (I have 64bit 7 Home Premium)
  21. I like the idea I have used the Mini 98 off of Hiren's Boot cd it works but it is 16bit and its capabilities are slim at best. I think a live installer were you can preconfigure your setting before install would be nice.
  22. I like this idea vary much! I think it would be cool it would be a new way to configure Windows 98 and if you could format within the live cd rather then using the windows 98 boot floppy to start setup that would be convenient.
  23. Hello I am relativity new windows image deployment, but a network infostructure I was working in at one point used this technique I ran the image everything worked perfect but when I tried to boot the PC I just imaged boot failed I when in and found a hidden partion that was not on the original machine I made the image of I deleted the partion and windows booted normally. Hope this helps.
  24. I am a Linux & Win9x enthusest and I was wondering if it was possible to create a mesh of the two operating systems? My Idea is that you take and open source Linux distribution make it the base OS then create a filter for windows9x then put the 9x system right on top of the filter. My resining for this is Linux has support for many more drivers ect. & you could run your older OS on more powerful machines. Were the 9x OS can not go Linux can. This is just an idea at this point. I was just wondering if it was possible to do this. I will add more to this topic later I didn't realize what time it was got to go.
  25. I have several computers and I wan't to back them up. I normally use Drive Image XML, but I am not crazy about it. I am looking for a free backup program that will back up the following: Vista 64bit Vista 32bit XP 32bit and create a bootable DVD that will restore my Hard drives image (Note: I want to backup both partions) I know Norton Ghost has that option, but I want to look for a free option first. thanks helpesk98
